After the historical topics, I make one for my fantasy armies too. Multiple small armies, their purpose is mostly to serve as punching bag against my historical armies (Roman and XVth century Hungarian for now). This might sound weird, but Kings of War has compatible rules for fantasy and for historical armies, and, in general, the ruleset lacks the over-the-top fantasy stuff, so it makes sense. Their set of units is kinda ripoff of WHF, so most of the GW units have their suitable rules released. To make the system better, I also introduced the support and command system from Hail Caesar.
So, first of all, Skaven. I have some clanrats:

Some heavy weapons. The flamethrower is used very rarely, not too historical-y :)

Confrontation Dirz Alchemists. The sad story of a company doing great models shooting itself to the head with bad business decisions. but I managed to save some of their figures. I have an older collection:

...my favourite of them being this one:

But just recently I decided to finish all my unpainted Dirz models, but this time with artist oils. painting NMM with these is really simple, so the progress is pretty fast.
This was the test piece:

We will see, I will make some mixed units of them.
I also have some fantasy characters. They are meant for skirmishes, and as antagonists for a WIP dungeon building boardgame project of mine.
Old GW Dark Elf sorceress:

A really ugly old wizard, I used for testing colour schemes.

A female warrior, 3d print too. I used her for colour testing, but I did not manage to paint a proper red i wanted, just that brick red thing. Anyways, girls with nice tits are always welcome.

So, this is it for now, I will post the new additions here.
-
The dark scheme you use for your Skaven looks really good, fits them really well.
-
That’s a great collection, lots of excellent work there. Definitely looking forward to seeing more as you add them!

Thank you!
This one is a slower project since the mentioned historical armies have now a serious handicap, they need more units before their opponents have more. The next big task will be to add some light cavalry, in the battles against the Romans now I can mimic footslogging hoplite/phalanx armies, but even those did not completely lack the light horse element.
On the other hand I always slip into the schedule some characters or Dirz figures.

Thank you! The main colours are (base+wash+drybrush)
Armor. Tamiya Field Grey+Nuln Oil+[Tamiya field Grey with some white]
Clothes: Tamiya NATO Green+Athonian Camoshade+GW death World Forest
Fur: GW Eshin Grey+Nuln Oil+White

Very nice - ! I especially like the undead banners! :)

I just looked through again and wanted to mention the figures you sculpted, they’re really good! It always impressive to see the WIP and the painted examples folks have put together completely from scratch. I find the chaos sorcerer in the blue helmet especially appealing!

Thank you! The base idea came from and old Vampire Counts army book. I did not want to paint "normal" heraldry, with this stlye it resembles more like the metal band Tshirts and logos. I think it goes well with the undead theme.

Thank you! The sorcerer was cast in resin, and I painted one for each of the Chaos gods (except Khorne, who hates sorcery). With minimal conversion (a new head and maybe a gun) it also fits 40k.
-
I love everything you've done here, most especially the banners for the Undead, the Rat Ogres that you've managed to make look non-cartoony and to top it off, your own sculpts fit perfectly into the whole look.
Awesome.
-
Lots of great work here! I particularly like your very Grimdark looking Skaven. They look less comical than they often look in official GW artwork.
-
Thanks, guys!
For the Skaven, as sculpts I prefer them as cute little angry rodents rather than scary monsters, but for their paint scheme I chose a darker one to reflect their underground dwelling nature.
-
Skyrim guy got a girlfriend. Also from Brother Vinni.

Hey there,
I like the "girlfriend" a lot! What's the salad you planted onto the base made of? lol
Cheers

Absolutely LOVING all of the Dirz... they look as fantastic as ever!

Thanks! Rackham had a lot of interesting designs, most of them were too artistic for my taste, but Dirz was a perfect spot on. Too bad they are over, I would have liked to see some more of it, artillery or cavalry clones for example.
-
Slowly eliminating the Rackham pile of shame, two new Belisarius clones painted.

I sculpted this zombie standard bearer. It was cast in resin, I will need 5 pieces. I have quite a zombie horde :P

Zombie painting WIP, artist oil on Tamiya Dark Yellow base. This makes a nice base for all kinds of zombie skin tones painted with the (to some degree) translucent artist oils, I consider this as a positive outcome for the experiment.

Thank you! Now I am doing their bases. I do not really need more zombies, but these new GW ones look super cool.

The finished zombies, I am really pleased with this new painting technique with oils. The bright green one might be a bit too much, but the rest of the skin tones came out really well.

I quite like the green one myself.
The mix of colours has made what is often a drab, bland unit a lot more colourful.
Good job.

Thank you! She could be any kinda magician, but she came with a base with zombie hands, thats how she became a necromancer :) I do not know where she is from, in the local club there are monthly bitz markets, and some 3d printer guys also come to sell their stuff- who knows whart is what range, I just buy it if I like it.
Purple is one of my favourite colours regarding oil paints, oils in general are more vibrant than acrylics and for purple it really stands out.

Clearly! The practice shows :D - do you have a particular technique you follow, or do you just wing it as you go?

I base the banner white acryl then paint it black, leaving only a white spot where the image will be (painting dark onto white is far easier than the other way around). Then I paint the picture with artist oil- there is no clear recipe here, you have to be careful blending together the bright and the black parts, but if anything, artist oil is ideal for blending. Otherwise it is just painting in the classical 2D meaning of the word. The inspirations come from the 8th ed Vampire Counts army book, also sometimes from heavy metal album cover/artworks.

Thanks so much!

Also, five more standards, this time for my zombie units. Why do zombies need standards when they are mindless creatures no concept for the morale and heraldry? Good question. My guess: while in battle they are driven by their hunger towards the enemy, in marching time a magical banner might help to hold the horde together and lead them where their masters intend them to be at.

Terrific work on those banners!
-
Beautiful work!
I think you’re on the right track with the idea that the banners provide a mystical focal point to coordinate the horde. The necromancer or greater undead leading the army has to devote attention to lots of things in battle and can’t direct each individual zombie, but they can direct the five zombies that carry the banners…
-
Blooming heck- those are absolutely marvellous! I love how the bright colours pop against the dark of the rest of the banner- and that’s quite apart from the skill to freehand all those. Very, very impressive :-*
-
Your stuff is very impressive overall but those banners are astounding.
Eddie is easily recognised but the fact that you can actually read the text on all of them is amazing.
'Death is only the beginning' if I'm reading it right,?
Are the other images inspired by album covers too? The one second from right has a Blue Oyster Cult vibe.

I wanted something focal yet tried to avoid simply pushing skeletons into traditional heraldry as it is too Empire/40k-y. So my main inspiration came from band T-shirts and the 8th ed VC Army book, where these "something bright on a black base"-stlye heraldry are a main theme. I did not try to replicate a concrete album cover (save Eddie, who, as him being the most iconic zombie character and me being a great Iron Maiden fan, I wanted to include), I save that for another project, these imagery of graves and skeletons might match some of them but they are basically generic horror clichés some depressive artist painted in 1720 and the rest just keep stealing from each other :) The second banner from the right, together with the text ("When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth") comes from the Dawn of the Dead movie posters, call me a heretic but the 2004 Dawn of the Dead is the best zombie movie of all.
'Death is only the beginning' if I'm reading it right,?
Yes :)

Knowing the style of Brother Vinni, I am sure that they sculpted this figure after the very persuasive priest from Age of Empires 2. But even if it is just a random cleric, I painted him for ,,team Blue priest" colours I used a lot :)

Once upon a time I bought a skaven collection from a guy here. He clearly wanted to grab some extra cash from a lucky ebay find, but it was still well worth it, I got loads of infantry and a set of great conversions: some kinda Skaven dog unit made from various bitz (I Identified Scibor Chaos snails, a Cold One, and, ofc, lots of Skaven bitz and green stuff). There were 10 of them, I kept 7 (two I will use as characters, one was basically just a giant spider with an Epic Skaven, I cut the little Skaven and will use that one as simple giant spider), and repainted them with my colour scheme.

As I mentioned, there are only 7 of them, so I buffed up the unit with 3 Chaos hounds. 2 of these are very old (among the first WH minis in the family- bought by my brother back when these were the current edition), with an old paintjob; one is a more recent purchase, but came without a tail which I sculpted for it.
(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAa4VAIAuh4TNHFFxNCtLBPa7pymkhUfCeM_Dcxv9iR1xQuYBcVUNN3GxeWk6E1EI7i_Tj3KYXiFgTRvE47o6GMx61Dd-DUGmQq47sBTfOHhrpiuF9ugUM2Ct99ydmamzhBye36VZHcMGuZumEe4Gq5YzJuBRsUG2BeF9ZuJ-WViq69eZswFtcv5i40rM/w719-h719/Kaoszkutyak2_1.JPG)
This way the unit is playable with 10 figures: no idea yet what will I use it in KoW as, they shall have some Chaos hound-equivalent unit I am sure, worst case simple Cavalry. But the Chaos hounds are a temporary solution, I will make a proper rat hound unit (I also have some conversion/sculpting ideas...) and the Chaos hounds also deserve their own unit, I used them as unit fillers for too long (they served among the zombie hordes before).

That red one is my favourite, it's very well done

Oh, no, being a leggy one in this unit is the best thing ever, you can take your time and there is always someone to blame for being late.

Oh wow that's so funny, might need to look it up just to check the comments thread haha.
Furious the monkey boy was so good as well lol
Oh perfect, glad the leggy ones aren't going to face the punishment of khorne then for being a tad late to the blood supper. But they may still miss some of the Hors D'oeuvres.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Wololo
Violets are now red
Furious the monkey boy was so good as well lol
We used the laser trooper.... good old times.
Oh perfect, glad the leggy ones aren't going to face the punishment of khorne then for being a tad late to the blood supper. But they may still miss some of the Hors D'oeuvres.
You made me think about converting some more to be able to make a leggy and a slow unit...

Freddy that's so funny, he even changes himself haha.
Thanks for sharing.
They don't make games like they used to, pure classics

Confrontation project.
The Belisarius clones are all done, I managed to collect 9 of them. So for now a skirmishing unit of 10, I will make a filler base for them :)

The Keratis warriors got rebased for 40mm bases, and they also get proper movement trays. So now they make two Regiments (in KoW these ogre-type units make 3-model units for Regiment size) plus one character guy.

Thank you! Around 30-40% of my collection were painted when Confrontation was a thing, so some 15 years ago, you can see most of them on pg1. Later, not long after Rackham kicked the bucket, I bought the rest- I do not have the complete Dirz range, but a good part of it. Now I am painting those with artist oils, looks much better then what I could achieve with acrylics. The current goal, as no one is playing Confrontation any more (wasnt't much a good game anyways, I tried it once) is to use them in army games- so they need some reorganizing :)
The Keratis are also from the old times, I just put them onto 40mm bases recently. On the picture you can see them on their original 25mm bases- as I said the current goal is to use them in army games, so 40mm fits better this type/size of figures.

Thank you very much for the pictures! I also possess most of the Dirz range, and I'm still hesitating about the color scheme :D
I always thought the Keratis figures were cramped on their bases, bigger bases are a natural and good idea.

Thank you! She is a pretty universal character, from medieval times to 40k I can use the base figure with minor conversions.

A third Brother Vinni sorceress, she is my favourite, it is rare that I can use a modern military colour scheme on a fantasy figure.

Necromancer and his girlfriend. Scibor figures, painted with oils, that is when I decided to make them a pair. Guess they hooked up in the undead army office party. ("Lets crack open a cold one!").

Mine have always been OK the bigger they are. My only issue with them is there is so much flash on the human sized stuff. But gorgeous sculpts.

Nice work! Do you think they planned on matching outfits or did they just see each other across the graveyard and realize they shared the same taste (or tailor)?

There were no big errors, on some of them the two halves of the negative did not match around the lower parts. I would not mind on a cheaper model, but in Scibors price category I expect flawless casting.

If you look at my other armies, might notice that most of them have a coherent colour scheme- the undead are one of the rare exemptions. The military green+sand combo is usually for Chaos, but most of my zombies also wear this because in 40k they serve in the Chaos army.
Now the two lovebirds discovered together that desecrating coffins is not just a great way to make new friends, but also a great way to fill ones gardrobe. Vampires, as it is known, like fancy dresses, but only care about each other, so there is no dress code for the middle management and the rank and file. But even their patience has limits, after the infamous Naked Zombie Regiment Scandal ("not only the guts are dangling here!") the larcenous duo had to give up their second hand clothes side business and, as a punishment, they have to wear their collection until the last piece of "recycled" clothes is got torn into rags. So they are stuck in sand+green for a while, the Naked Zombie Regiment is, well, a regiment...
-
Ha! Those shameless zombies! I applaud their rejection of the norms imposed upon them by the necromantic oppressors!

Freddy, loving your very fun and creative army building.
Just read the whole thread- love the undead and Rackham baddies.
What artists oils do you use for the bronze? And what for the steel? If you don’t mind sharing 🙂

Thank you!
Usually for the metals I use acrylics (GW, mostly, but I also like Silver from Revell), I only use oils for the weathering of the steel (various browns, even orange)
With the oils I only paint the NMM, which I only use on the Dirz figures. There is still room for experimenting, but generally:
The grey metals
-starts with a black wash (oil wash)
-grey drybrush- the grey I simply mix from black and white, sometimes a little Payne Gray, that pulls it towards blue. The drybrush here is a drybrush-y technique with nothing actually dry: the paint still wet, but not flowingly wet. With some practice the easiest way to paint nice colour transitions without the 100 layers of homeopatically diluted paint folks use for acryls
-and then white oil-drybrushes (see above) until I am pleased with the result. Sometimes I even wait to dry and add a final acrylic white (acrylics have a better coverage) on the very edges.
-rust, as I would do with the normal metals
The gold:
-starts with a dark brown, usually Burnt Umber oil wash
-oil-drybrush with Yellow Ochre, see above
-white, the same way.
There is a lot to experiment here with all the shades and little shade modifications, these are the basics, I am still at the entrance of the rabbit hole :)
I use Pannon Color, Winton Colour, Talens and Louvre oils, in the oil paint artist subculture the names of the colours and the palette itself is basically unchanged since the medieval times, so in 98% they all offer the same stuff, with some later inventions like ready-mixed skin tone. For the remaining 2%, I prefer the skin tone and the Prussian Blue from Pannon Color above the others (the skin tone is more pinkish, a little less pale, the Prussian Blue is really vibrant when diluted, great for painting plasma weapons and blue ink handwriting), and the Olive Green from Talens is just the right shade for ww2 Hungarian uniforms.
One last thing to consider is that oils in general have a bad coverage when used in the moderate layers needed for modeling (impasto technique just does not cut for 28mm :)), but oil paint manufacturers usually have a marking system for opaqueness, check it and choose the paint accordingly.
-
Molerats. I sculpted them for the 1/35 postapo project, but their bases are changeable (magnetized), for 28mm I use cavalry bases, they make a nice Skaven unit.

Thank you Freddy for sharing your oil recipe for m
NMM, much appreciated ?? I’m getting ready to paint Ancient and Medieval armies from the Lead Pile of Dreams and Opportunity! 😇
I must commit to sharing with the Lead Aventure legions.
I have enjoyed experiencing with oils, but for armies I’m thinking zenithal spray prime, contrasts and then an oil wash which I have seen on YouTube - search slap chop with oil wash.
Love your just mole rats Freddy, another creative sculpt. Are they oil painted too?
Keep sharing, I must get painting, creating and sharing too … promise 😉

These look wonderfully messed up! naked molerats as a skaven unit is a great idea, really cool stuff :)

Thank you, guys! Yes, the molerats were also painted with oils, I added a little variation in the colours as they are all the same two sculpts.

Those ROUS (rodents of unusual size) look like they escaped from the fire swamp.

Once upon a time, probably 3rd edition or thereabouts, Skaven not only had warbeasts such as Rat-Ogres but also Wolf-Rats, I believe - big, rat-headed beasts of the size and disposition of dire wolves. Nice to see that tradition is still being carried on! lol

Yes, if you look at actual molerats, they have this weird skin texture reminiscent of burn scars or the skin of very old people. I tried to imitate this effect by the sculpting.

Indeed, they also had giant rat cavalry from FW. I look at my fantasy armies with kind of a historical eye, this means that my Skaven really lack some form of cavalry support. Beasts are good for this, they need some rules tweaking though as they fight ferociously, but hard to control and if you scare an animal it runs away for good, unable to regroup like a regular military unit.

They were actually three new brushes who sacrificed their brush hair for thatched roof house models. I did not want to waste the handles either. :)

Clever, and very nice work!!

As the skaven-dog unit has three Chaos hounds in it, I eventually have to replace them with three more rat-dogs. Two are from the molerats, the third one is sculpted individually.

Crom!
Great work there! And somehow I missed the dog-rat mutants from before- that's a great unit, nice job!

Thank you!
Scibor minis re a real pleasure to paint, they have really crisp details unlike the half-sucked lollipop feel of some other manufacturers.

Couldn't agree more with youFreddy.Might be the reliance on digitalsculptingby people who have not "pushed putty around".Saying that there are some painters on this forum (not mentioning any names for fear of leaving anyone out)who make even the flattest figures look incredible.Myself I prefer crisp detail.

It could be many things, sculpting material and style too. The two most common cases I met are
-cheap injection molding techniques where the negatives or the machinery do not allow crisp details
-those one-model-for-all-scales 3D prints where the model was made to fit larger scales too, this way the details in 28mm are simply too small. Common mistake for 3D modelers- the renders are impressive! Yes, in 3072*2304 on your computer screen, very cool, but in 28mm you need a microscope and a 80/0 brush.

Skeleton king.
You might notice that he is the second skeleton king- yep, this was the root case of the infamous Double Undead Civil War: the skeletons fought among themselves about who is the true king, and also the vampires fought among themselves about whose bright idea was to resurrect two powerful kings at once, causing all this mess. After many lives lost (2nd time) an agreement was made: Skeleton King I. is the Keeper King, overseeing all the skeletons, Skeleton King II. is the Liberator King, responsible for bringing new skeletons to the team. ("Liberator" as all human beings have an opressed captive skeleton inside them who just wants to break free ...according to the skeleton kings at least.)

Nice bit of background! And lovely miniature as always, still loving the dour colour palette you've gone with :D

Thank you! I'd like to keep my undead with this style of colour palette- even if they did have fancy clothes once, being in the grave for so long ruined it. Also I do not use dust on their lower parts, I add some green instead: as the clothing parts touching the ground, soak up water and get mossy instead of the dusty/muddy clothes of regular humans walking long distances.

Good thinking! It certainly adds a nice touch of realism to the army, might have to use that trick on my own minis :)

Thank you, I need more plague censer bearers now :)

I am a little late but the kings (I and II) are great.

Great work on the King and Death Priest!
I love old metal skaven, but all the nooks and crannies in the torn fabric makes it like painting an English muffin. Gotta thin your paint for those guys, I suppose!

Thank you, guys! I have a lot more undead to paint!

Nah, oil's gonna cover it pretty well :)

Interesting! I haven't used oil paints since I was a kid- didn't realize they flow or coat those tiny gaps better than water-based acrylics. Cheers!

I use several techniques, but the fastest one starts with an oil wash (white spirit is better for this than tupertine), this covers the recesses, the further layers are drier, those do not get into the deep parts, they remain the colour of the first layer.

I repainted the death priest with some lines added on his clothes, also painted his buddy.
