Was in two minds about posting this project on LAF (too busy prepping minis and painting!) but here goes……
War of the Roses, my second time around. Having been persuaded by Captain Blood to try out NMTB, I quite quickly assembled a few units. The ‘Blood Collection’ was also available for me to build an army from and so my efforts weren’t strictly necessary, but I wanted to get my head into the game and organising units can be great for that.
My first 44 minis were fielded as part of a 150 point force. Though I lost to the good Captain I really enjoyed NMTB and so have set out to complete my full army. Another 60 odd minis have now been assembled and I’m building up to painting them.
The army contains a lot of conversions as it’s been almost entirely cobbled together from my Bitz Box of scrap and half-finished minis from my long since sold on WotR (first time around) and Game of Thrones projects. The minis are almost entirely Perry, though I have used some Steel Fist and Athena, plus there’s my own sculpting contribution. Captain Blood kindly donated a sprue each of Perry Agincourt crossbows and knights (plus horses) which significantly increased the variety of assemblies, while I purchased two sprues of Perry Billhooks, as I was short a unit. Everything else is from the aforementioned Bitz Box.
In the meantime, here’s some snapshots of some of the completed 44:

Lovely work 8)

Thanks Daryl :)
In case of wider interest, here’s how the Army list is drawn up:
PS: I’m also making counters/tokens to match the army colours

Looking like a great new project. :-* NMtB got me inspired to start a WotR army (starting to talk in acronyms, scary!).
-
Huzzah!
-
Great looking troops! Well done sir!
-
Back in the saddle Steve ;) :-*
Even better second time round!
-
Thanks all. Am really enjoying painting these.
-
It's always a pleasure to see you start a new project. :-*
-
Good Luck Sir on this journey
-
Thanks chaps
It's always a pleasure to see you start a new project. :-*
Starting is easy, finishing is harder :D
-
Return of the spreadsheet! Huzzah! :)
Looking good so far. :)
-
Excellent start!

Thanks chaps. :D
I know that unpainted minis aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but I find them quite motivating as the stage I most dislike is now behind me (I love assembling/converting/sculpting, I abhor cleaning/prepping, I love painting). Prepped minis rarely hang around waiting to be painted whereas unprepped ones can be sold off before they come out of their box.
Anyways here’s where I’m presently at, with a few quick photos of shelves in one of my cabinets (all are described from left to right as viewed):

Mounted/Dismounted Alternates, Counters/Tokens/Markers
Since assembling this lot, I’ve decided I need more banners so have a couple of knight sprues coming. Also, as the Army Commander is on foot but has a mounted alternate, for completeness he’ll also need mounted alternates for his banner and musician.
-
A splendid collection taking shape :-*
-
Thank you Richard - much inspired by your good self :D
-
WotR imagery is often awash with flags, and as I had just the one bannerman I decided I needed a few more.
The full army has the commander (HERO), two foot leaders, and a mounted leader (DOLT, who won’t have a banner). Thus, 3 bannermen on foot:
I’ve also assembled the mounted alternates for the commander, his bannerman and his trumpeter, and it was a lot of fun finding the parts to match up the minis.
I also matched the styles of the other two bannermen to the leaders they’d be accompanying.
Finally, each of the leaders is a son of the commander, so their banners will be similar (perhaps one with 2 red feathers and the other with 3), though the hierarchical status will be identified by cadency devices.
None of the foregoing will make much of a difference as to how the army plays on the battlefield, but they’ll certainly be prettier :D.

Great thread !
-
Good stuff :)
Nice to see the carrot tops get another outing lol
-
Thanks chaps and my apologies for not replying sooner. Somehow I missed your replies.
Anyways, painting has started on the next batch of minis while I’ve also started to create a town. I already have a village, which looks like this:
….. but I’m really taken by Graham Turner’s paintings of St Albans and Bishopsgate, and so would like a medieval town. My existing village doesn’t lend itself to expansion so I’ve settled on a town that is derived from a part of medieval St Albans. My imaginary town of Hawfield will be constructed on A4 sheets of 4mm MDF, with 3 buildings to a sheet, with the sheets laid out to represent/create the streets. I will need 9 such sheets for the bulk of the town layout, which suggests completion will be some time off.
To start me off, the bulk of the buildings are resin casts by Oshiro Models, with levels and other parts mixed about for variation. With two Oshiro models per tile, the third (in the middle) will be scratch built by me. I’ve laid out the first tile and started on the second, with more buildings on order to complete the first three tiles.
When laid out on the gaming table, the rear gardens of the building plots will be further delineated by hedges.
-
Awesomesauce :)

An impressive start 8)
-
Totesamazeballs. That town project looks ambitious.
-
Fantastic collection! I love tour conversions!
-
Gawd! I was hesitant on buying one of those lovely structures on account of the CDN vs GBP and the shipping but now I see I am going to need at least 3. :-[ :'(
lol

Thanks folks

For those not familiar with Graham Turner’s work, his late medieval paintings can be seen (and purchased in various forms) from here:
https://www.studio88.co.uk/acatalog/The_Medieval_Art_of_Graham_Turner.html (https://www.studio88.co.uk/acatalog/The_Medieval_Art_of_Graham_Turner.html)
His urban scenes are a motivator/influence for my town project, such as:

-
They’re very good :)
-
He’s a marvellous artist with an amazing feel for the period - I have a few prints of his paintings on my walls :)
-
Really looking forward to this, the village was superb, the town’s going to be magnificent.
-
Thanks all. Obvs the town will have multi use, from Fantasy to say 17thC, even 19thC if I ignore the absence of glazing. I have plenty of photos from a recent trip to Lavenham in Suffolk (the best preserved medieval village in England?) from which to derive the builds that will squeeze between and connect the OSHIROmodels resins.
-
A little bit more WIP progress.
I’ve assembled another 3 of the OSHIROmodels houses onto the A4 4mm mdf boards. I now have to build the ‘width ways’ house to connect each pair, hopefully repeating the OSHIROmodels building style.
Obviously the 3 tiles can be laid out in a number of ways, though I’m probably going to aim for 6 of them for two sides of a long and dense street.
Obvs it’s a bit odd that adjacent tiles both have wattle fencing but that’s unavoidable if thd tiles are to shift around. I have matched the building heights so they can be pushed as close as possible.
The 6 buildings are made from 2 models, each of which has accessible/removable levels. I don’t want interior access but because the buildings are cast with separate levels, I’ve been able to mix them up for 6 different versions. I’ve only needed to drill out one new window, which for the time being is backed with card.
I’ve also finished painting the various counters and markers, which will next be flocked .

-
Fine progress, this is going to be epic 8)
-
Most impressive 8)
-
Great stuff :)
-
That’s going to be some range of buildings :-*
Amazing Steve. Can’t wait to see the finished set.
-
Thanks all. Mucho work to do!
-
This looks amazing. I have one of those Oshiro buildings and really should get some more, they're excellent.
-
A belated thanks Steve; somehow I missed your post.
So 2 weeks have passed and what have I done?
All the NMBH markers are finished, which are quite boring to look at and so I won’t post images, except for these:
Painting of minis has taken a back seat due to the high heat and so I’ve made progress within the buildings instead.

The next jobs are
-brackets etc for the projections
-filler to walls
-roofs
-tiling
-chimneys
-gap filling and detailing
-
Tremendous, this is going to look ace :)
-
Really impressive, it’s looking superb so far. :)
-
Thanks chaps. It’s a lot of fun.
-
Spectacular!
-
Those “width ways” look fantastic 8)
-
The scratch built parts are brilliant.
-
That’s already looking spectacular and most instructive.
-
I can't wait to see the buildings finished & painted.
-
The village is looking fantastic, already. :-* :-*
-
Great work mate!
-
Thanks very much for all the comments; most appreciated :)
-
I continue to be distracted by the buildings, so still no more finished minis to post.
As far as the village street is concerned, I’ve commenced roofing and tiling.
Here’s an example of a tiled tile:
As soon as I’ve tiled the other two roofs, I will cut out and fit the platforms for the chimneys (coming from OSHIRO Model Terrain) and then add the ridge tiles. After that it will be detailing and tidying.
-
That works well
-
That’s awesome, a huge improvement on the original. ;)
lol
-
Great work Steve, and a top job 👍.
-
Thanks chaps
That’s awesome, a huge improvement on the original. ;)
But you are a terrible stirrer!!!
-
He certainly is. I'm sure Steve will agree that without the availability of the excellent Oshiro houses, it'd be a ridiculously difficult project.
-

I most certainly would!
Without the two OSHIROmodels buildings I wouldn’t even be contemplating it. And even with them being available, it’s that they are cast as individual storeys rather than as one-piece blocks, which has meant that I can use them for their component parts to create the necessary variation.
-
Great work 8)
-
Excellent, once it's painted it will all blend in perfectly :-*
-
Su-poib :-*
-
Thank you chaps.
Have now finished roofing all 3 tiles, while I’ve also added the structure for the chimney platforms and doorsteps (both of which will be skinned with GS).

Obvs the layouts of these 3 tiles are quite similar. I do plan another 3 tiles, of which 2 will have the roof midlines running front to back rather than across the width.
-
Marvellous. Just the other side of the street to do now!
-
That's one long street. :o
-
That's one long street. :o
Classic ribbon development!
-
Fantastic :)
-
WOW! This is going to look grand. Those buildings are just beautiful! :-*
-
It’s fantastic. ;D
-
Thanks chaps for the interest :D
Just the other side of the street to do now!
Yes, that makes it more exciting as having now familiarised myself with the basics, I can try some more interesting variations.
I’ve drafted out 3 more tiles, each with a different layout, but before I start on them I must finish these and paint some more minis and play sone more games (otherwise this will end up like my East End project, with a whole table of buildings hardly any of which are painted).
-
Absolutely fantastic! I can't wait to see them completed!
-
Beautiful :-*
and it's got me thinking.
-
:) Thanks chaps.
The builds should be ready for painting sometime this week.
-
I’ve now completed the builds of the first 3 tiles, for which painting will be the next step.

I’ve also settled on the compositions for the next 3 tiles (I suppose they could be called ‘the other side of the street’ but in reality all the tiles can be mixed up). Very rough sketches are as follows:
These will leave me with a street of 16 abodes and 1 inn.
-
Looking very nice.
These will leave me with a street of 16 abodes and 1 inn.
You need a Church in front of the Inn, in case they thirst after righteousness lol
-
This is incredibly impressive.
-
Love it 8)
-
Thanks chaps.
A church will follow at some point. I have one partly made but I think I need something more ‘impressive’.
-
Stunning work mate :)
-
Cheers Matt.
-
It’s a triumph. It’s going to look stunning when painted. ;D
-
Thank you Nick, though I momentarily digressed to finish another 21 minis.
The force is now half-finished albeit its presently lacking fighters. That said, it’s already at 86 points with units of MAA and Billhooks next in the painting queue.
The force (completed elements only):
I’ve now completed all of the command elements comprising:
Hero Commander with bannerman and trumpeteer
Leader with bannerman (1st son)
Leader with bannerman (2nd son)
Dolt Leader (3rd son)
Each of the leaders is denoted by a red plume:

Positioned behind the command elements is Sir John’s pride and joy, his artillery piece:

Also new is the unit of Skirmisher Crossbows:
And finally, the other new pieces are 6 minis added to what had previously been a Skirmisher Bows unit, to turn it into a Company:
I haven’t loaded more images of the other 3 units (as they made an appearance on page 1 of this thread).
In terms of what’s next, I’ve started painting the 3x Street Tiles, after which I’ll paint more ‘fisticuff’ units.
-
Looking good! 👍

A splendid sight ! Nicely coloured in. :)

Update on The Street.
Painting is now ½ way there, with washes, highlights, detailing and corrections just to do.

Thanks chaps :)
-
lovely work, delightful.
-
Looking fantastic, and imagine it next to that gorgeous village :o :-*
-
Magnificent!! :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks all. Painting is proceeding apace. 8)
-
Painting is now done, though still drying in places. When fully dry I’ll add the grasses then a waft of Matt sealer to the roof tiles.
Edit: the chimneys aren’t quite so mono-colour in real life, as after taking the photos I wiped away some of the smoke stain to expose more of the brick
Though this is parked with my 15thC WotR project, I will use it for other periods and so have positioned a Bloody Miniatures 17thC Scot for the obligatory size comparison.

Phenomenal build. ;D
It looks amazing :-*
Yep! 8)
-
Exceptional! Great achievement.
-
Love it 8)
-
Thanks all
Obvs none of this would’ve been possible without the Oshiro Models medieval buildings 8)
-
Superb
-
Brilliant work!
-
What a lovely backdrop for some ECW games.
I would like to see the 'units' staggered, as that
would create more areas of cover for a skirmish game.
-
Fantastic job! 8)
-
Thanks everyone. FYI the terrain isn’t intended as a backdrop; it will be integral to play (I just record which units are in which buildings/tiles).
Anyways, these first 3 tiles are now complete so herewith some images of their final forms:

The fictional town of Hawsley is derived from a small part of medieval St Albans, with the layout and various field/street names being real. When putting the project together I modified an old map of St Albans to create a plan as follows….
…. which with the A4 tile system it seems I’ll pretty much be able to replicate (NB 1, 2 and 3 are the finished tiles):

The A4 sheets are numbered to match the plan (7 being the exception) and give an idea of the work still required.

And finally, a variation of the above planned table that will use what I’ve got for a game:

Wow, that’s amazing! I expect it will be a lot of fun for the players. Very immersive!
-
That is going to be a beautiful battle field. Really wonderful work on the terrain so far.
-
The buildings are outstanding!
When you see them on the board with all the shrubbery... eyepopping. :-* o_o :o
-
Superb work and I love the overview/planning :)
-
That looks really good as is, but will be stunning when completed :-*

Superb 8)

Amazing table. It will be jaw-dropping when completed.
-
A fantastic looking table.
Great work and so quick.
Very, very impressive
-
What an amazing table! Looking forward to the next additions.

Wow, that's something else! Hugely impressive work so far and I can't help think that creating the whole town is going to be a work of art in its own right. It'll be useful for several of your favourite gaming periods too. I hope to have the pleasure of gaming on it one day!
-
Terrific job,they look fantastic! 8)

Thanks all for your very kind remarks.
The next lot of tiles won’t get the same blow-by-blow coverage, though I will share the key stages such as their initial layout and then, of course, the finished pieces. One of the reasons I posted so much on these builds, was so that I had a reference for the next lot, which means that next time I won’t have to faff around quite so much.
Obvs it’s a ‘big’ project albeit one with many different uses but a ‘town’ is something I’ve wanted for a long time. My original medieval village is now seeming somewhat superfluous and so I might well be selling that, partly because the planned 10 tiles will take up a lot of space.
On the subject of storage, I’m contemplating sone high level shelves around the gaming room, so that they can be seen rather than boxed away when not in use.

Superb 8)
Thanks James.
I have to say that I highly recommend the OSHIRO models range of cast medieval buildings, which are (quite literally) the cornerstone of this project.

That I’ve been able to use them as I have is a testament to their versatility. 8)

Thanks also to you Steve, as your vast subject knowledge fed into the design work and provided further useful pointers along the way. I very much hope that you are able to play on it. :)

Truly epic. It’s going to be one of the best LAF builds of all time. Outstanding work old chum.
Can’t wait to see it in the flesh ;D

Just packing up your next order o_o

Just picking up your next order o_o
Woo hoo!
Meanwhile I have to crack on with more miniatures. :)
-
Truly remarkable!
You're home-made ones blend in perfectly with the Oshiro ones, there's no way to tell them apart.
I'd like to do a similar sort of project myself sometime soon using the Oshiro houses, this is inspirational.
-
Thanks Charlie :)
I think they’re the best houses out there TBH. They can be accessible though personally I didn’t bother with that. 8)

Top job Steve 8)

With the first batch of houses finished, Captain Blood kindly drove to mine for a game of NMTB. It was my second game and being somewhat rules-phobic I still needed some hand-holding with Richard’s patience being greatly appreciated. :)
As I’ve yet to finish painting, about half of my army was subbed from Richard’s glorious collection. Richard’s army is, of course, all his own. The terrain is mine.
Richard has kindly written-up the battle, which has been posted to the NMTB group on Facebook. Link for those who desire social media…..
https://m.facebook.com/groups/897063627788855/ (https://m.facebook.com/groups/897063627788855/)
……but for those who’d like to see it here, well here it is……..
(Below the line is collated and written by Captain Blood)
1. The field of Mars. Lancastrians (Richard) to the left, Yorkists (Steve) to the right. On this occasion, William Neville, Lord Fauconberg is appearing for the Lancastrians. Very unhistorical I know.
2. The Yorkist left is held by a powerful line formation of 24 veteran longbowmen.
3. But watch those Lancastrian light cavalry bottom right…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/59/2031-140823110611-596541352.jpeg)
4. The Lancastrian gun fired to put an end to the manoeuvre phase – and promptly blew up. It’s incredible how often this happens. (Phone pics, sorry, a bit fuzzy)
5. Jeering from the Yorkist line as the Lancastrian gun blows apart. The Yorkist gun similarly exploded on its first shot shortly afterwards. I mean, what are the chances? But it happens all the time…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/59/2031-140823110612-59656860.jpeg)
6. Meanwhile, opposing parties of skirmishers set to it in the lane by the houses…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/59/2031-140823110724-59657374.jpeg)
7. But lo, here come those light cavalry wih their 24” charge move… The veteran longbowmen on the Yorkist left decide to stand and shoot down three of the attacking horsemen, but the remainder clatter into the bowmen’s flank (they do manage to turn the end files to face, but it’s still poor odds).
8. The longbowmen lose six figures to the cavalry’s one, are daunted, and the veteran longbow formation falls back and splits apart, with the cavalry following up. Meanwhile the Yorkist block of bills in the centre are advancing very single-mindedly and at a considerable lick towards the weak point in the Lancastrian line – a single company of longbowmen. The Yorkists are taking casualties but still coming on.
9. Somewhat uselessly meanwhile, the Mowbrays’ impressive block of bills and bows is stuck behind a hedge with nobody left facing them…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/59/2031-140823110724-596602069.jpeg)
10. That Yorkist block of bills takes a good few casualties from the longbows, but then charges. The bowmen evade, but don’t get far enough away and are caught in the rear.
11. Slaughter ensues. They lose eight figures, are daunted and fall back (routing shortly afterwards on the end of turn morale check).
12. In the next turn, in the continuing melee, the light cavalry further reduce, daunt and drive back the already daunted company of Yorkist longbowmen. Now there’s only one man left, double daunted, but somehow he fails to break.
13. Now the main event begins in the centre, with Yorkist bill and men at arms companies rolling right up to the line formation of Lancastrian veteran longbows facing them, and stopping a couple of inches short.
14. The Yorkist billmen take fearsome casualties from shooting and rout at the end of the turn before they can close. But the Yorkist men-at-arms are raring to go…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/59/2031-140823110902-596701268.jpeg)
15. Meanwhile the battered but victorious block of two Yorkist bill companies swings in the menace the flank of the Lancastrian centre, whilst the Lancastrians block of two men-at-arms companies are peppered with crossbow casualties from the Yorkist skirmishers who have worked their way right round behind them.
16. Now the Yorkist men-at-arms charge, the Lancastrian longbowmen evade back through their own men-at-arms behind them, and there is a serious clash of heavy metal.
17. Despite the Yorkists' inferior numbers (a single company versus a block) the dice go badly for the Lancastrians, both in hitting and saving. They lose 5 figures, the Yorkists lose only 4. The Lancastrians stand firm however, and the Yorkists then break (in the end of turn morale test they shouldn’t actually have taken because they had just won a melee and were in an ongoing melee – ah well… it’s hard to remember everything in the excitement. Truth be told, the Lancastrians would almost certainly have won the next round anyway, with 20 dice against 9).
18. Meanwhile, those pesky light cavalry now charge the rear of the second Yorkist veteran longbow company (who have only just managed to rid themselves of their daunted status). So they’ve almost certainly had it as well…
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/59/2031-140823111005-596742473.jpeg)
19. And that is that. The Yorkists have yielded all their army morale tokens, and even if they hadn’t, they have far fewer viable units left effective on the field compared to the Lancastrians, who still have a largely intact block of men-at-arms, an entirely unused block of bows and bills, and a more or less intact line formation of veteran longbows. One half of which, admittedly, is out of arrows.
