Today I received a very exciting parcel from the postie. Warlord Games have very kindly sent me a preview set of there new epic Punic Wars set to paint, demo and blog about. Anybody who knows, me will know that I am very excited about Roman history in general and miniatures gaming set in Ancient Rome in particular.
The miniatures are approx. 13.5mm high, in the bizarre (to an outsider) wargames system of measurement from toe to eyeball of an average adult male. This scale gives a pleasing 10 miniatures to a 60mm frontage base. Units consist of three bases, so a units frontage is typically 180mm, similar to the frontage of a 28mm unit, but with lots and lots more figures on the base. Light troops tend to have 5 figures to a base, medium / heavy infantry have 20 figures in two ranks and the well dressed, close order Romans have 30 figures to a base in three ranks.

The rulebook is really nice. The rules are basically 'Hail Caesar' but the book also includes a handy introduction to the armies of Rome & Carthage, a background to the campaign and scenarios for all of the major battles.
My aim is to paint two 300 point starter armies over the next 4-6 weeks, to be able to play some demo games before the rules and miniatures are actually released at the end of July. This will involve painting and basing around 30 units of between 15 and 90 miniatures per unit.... so lets see how we go!
I'm planning to use Army Painter Speedpaints, and hopefully the small size and strip design will make them easy to paint. I will update both my hobby blog and this thread every couple of days, as new units get completed.
Additional photos and information in my hobby blog @ https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/warlord-games-epic-punic-wars-the-adventure-begins/ (https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/warlord-games-epic-punic-wars-the-adventure-begins/)

Will follow with great interest.
-
Looking forward to these posts, although I am only interested in the rule book as I have thousands of Punic Wars 15mm minis covering most nationalities (NOT BLOODY FACTIONS lol)
-
I agree completely, when did 'Factions' every come into wargaming? nationalities all the way.
I don't think this release (other than the rulebook / campaign guide), is going to be of any interest to gamers who already do Punic Wars in 6mm / 10mm / 12mm or 15mm. I already have 28mm armies and I'm interested to see the spectacle of having a unit with the same frontage of 180mm with 180 miniatures in 3 ranks with only a 20mm depth rather than the same unit in 28mm with 12 miniatures in 2 ranks with a 50mm depth.
As I progress I will be able to share some photos of same units in 28mm and 13.5mm!
-
Hi Chris
Gotta say that does look good, thanks for the preview.
Anything on the Punic Wars is always welcome!!
That Campaign rulebook does look excellent I will most certainly buy that , the Casualty tokens ive seen look good , but seem way to overpriced & expensive, :o :osame for the rest of the range . :o lol :o lol
Problem is and will be .. another scale .. again ??? o_o o_o o_o o_o o_o
Sorry but they wont mix with anything most people have , figures other armies terrain etc .. nothing . lol lol lol
I already have a Double Roman Consular Army ( 4 Legions ) in 15mm at 1/20 scale, using the Wonderful Battle Honours Romans by Anthony Barton,.
Add in my Beloved Carthaginians and I have 2 Armies of 700 point s each already ,that look better than anything Epic will ever be . lol lol
However it will fit for some people and thats Great to Introduce them into Ancients .
Cheers

Acceptable for a civil war situation, but otherwise just say no :D

I agree completely, when did 'Factions' every come into wargaming? nationalities all the way.
I've heard Bolt Action players call them "teams" :-X
I've got Punic Wars in 28mm, but looking forward to the free sprue on the next issue of WI.

‘Ackshually’, we should be referring to many of the factions as ‘non-state agrarian societies’ rather than tribes or nations according to the wonderful A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry blog (https://acoup.blog/). Bit of a mouthful though, isn’t it?
On a serious note, the author’s running a series of articles on raising tribal armies which are well worth a read. As are the posts on legion vs phalanx. I recommend delving into the blog archives.
-
I did wonder about the costs, and will be investigating in more detail in my blog how they cost compares to other alternatives.
Epic miniatures are about 7p per figure. 28mm plastic figures £1.10
A three base unit will therefore cost £4.40 with 60 epic miniatures on it or £13.20 with 12 x 28mm miniatures.
This is based on buying the Allied Contingent box which is £26.35 on pre-order from Sally 4th and contains 360 miniatures (330 infantry and 30 cavalry). The £28mm cost is based on a box of Warlord Games plastic Romans @ £22 for 20 miniatures.
To me, £4.40 per unit does not seem bad, and even although I have Punic War armies in 28mm metal, I'm looking to do epic armies because I think that 60 figure units will have a different look and feel to 12 figure units.
-
At the weekend, I undercoated first box of Punic War minis, the Allied Troops Division and made a start painting first couple of units.

Very nicely done. I have visited your blog piece and found all of that very useful, especially, the masking tape, the side on horses and the inking before paint, rather than after paint.
With other Epic, I find the gap between bases (result of a 55mm strip on a 60mm base) distracting to the eye, but these, with their offset shields look like that as an issue is reduced.
Also good to see what a division looks like from a painting perspective. I am following this with interest. Thank you.
Miniature Realms (YouTube) did a flip through of the rulebook and I tried to stop the vid on the page of each scenario and was surprised to see that a goodly number of scenarios are designed specifically for a 6x4 …. Hoorah!

Glad you found it helpful, Norm.
I have just put another Epic Punic War article up on my hobby blog.
This time it is a step by step painting guide for painting Republican Romans using Army Painter Speed Paints.

lots of lovely painting. Looking forward to getting mine next month
-
Looks great!
-
Thanks for sharing this stuff, it is very helpful. I just noticed that the thread has been visited 1552 times yet you only have 13 replies, 4 of which are your own! That is disappointing
Not much that can be done about that it seems, it is increasingly the way. I note from the blogging world, in the last three months there has been a significant drop off from bloggers creating posts - likely because of the lack of visible support versus the effort put in to writing posts.
As an aside, I picked up the latest wargames Illustrated mag (in the UK) and it is carrying a free Epic sprue. Apparently all 5 sprues are in circulation, but at my local Sainsbury’s, they only had two copies left and both carried the Roman sprue, so that is what I have and the mechanics of those 3 rank roman units are very inventive, especially in the way that painting time is significantly reduced.
All the models I saw were crisp and well detailed. I can see this being a big seller for Warlord Games.
-
Yeah, let’s swing the pendulum and give more feedback to the posts here at LAF!
As someone really tempted to buy into this set, this is really interesting for me! I’m still a bit hesitant about the very narrow battle lines, but your painting looks really great and I’m excited how the first full legion will look like!
-
Your troops like absolutely magnificoolo! :-*
So far, of all the Romans I have seen painted by other folks and yourself, nobody used the decals provided.
Could you give us some feedback concerning the decals?
-
This is the epic period i'm most tempted by (well 30yw was and is fairly interesting as well I have to admit). I just can't get another project of this scale right now. So I just watch and enjoy projects like yours.
In regards of this being a different scale, I've seen quite a few youtubers suggesting the jump to 15mm proper is miniscule and not noticeable at all. My issue with mixing would be more the issue that the closed formations look different than anything else but it should work with cavalry and skirmishers.
-
Thanks everyone for your comments, it is great to get some feedback and comments.
It really motivate you to do share some more rather than thinking no one is really interested.
I have painted (actually drawn) shield designs. The reason for that was because there were not any decals in my preview / demo set. I have found a couple of good products that I will photograph in next hobby blog that I know use all the time for stripes on 28mm clothing and shields designs. These are acrylic paint pens. They make small details very quick and easy.
Two of the factors that really drew me to the epic 13.5mm range were the relative depth vs frontage which I feel is far more realistic. The footprint of our 28mm armies are normally distorted by a factor of 10 at least. It's especially a problem with 28mm cavalry where one horse needs a 50mm deep base to accommodate it. The second factor that for me wins over traditionally 15mm individual figures is that they are a lot, lot quicker and easier to paint as strips of figures, especially the Romans where you only paint the bits you can see. I know you could glue your 15mm figures on to strips to paint, but if you wanted a 120 strong Roman unit like the one in my last article you'd need to glue 120 miniatures individually onto painting bases, paint them, take them off painting bases and glue individually onto final unit bases rather than just painting 12 strips that can be handled and painted as they come.
-

Okay, thanks!
I don't understand why Warlord Games splashes out by sending a bunch of folks a big box of minis but doesn't include the decals. I mean, shit, shield designs are, IMHO, really important during this time period.
Makes me wonder about the quality of the decals.
-
I am interested.
The plan is to use DBA 28mm bases but replace the 28mm figures with these Epic figure.
The Wargames Illustrated copy I got had Romans. I think I can make five DBA bases from
that one sprue. Only need seven more bases for an army. :D
-
That's a good idea.
I am planning to use the Epic Armies for other games as well as Hail Caesar, including Mortem et Gloriam and To the Strongest. My initial calculation is that a single Roman Division Box https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/product/hail-caesar-epic-battles-punic-wars-republican-roman-division/ (https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/product/hail-caesar-epic-battles-punic-wars-republican-roman-division/) has enough miniatures for a 2,500 point Pacto army for MeG.
-
Just added an entry on my hobby blog for this weeks painting.
One of the units I've painted is the Spanish cavalry from the Allied Troops Division box.
This is a photo of what I've painted so far over the last two weeks.
I like the feel of it, when a 6 x 4 is filled with these bases, I think it will give a good impression of a Punic Wars battle.
Link to my Epic Punic Wars Hobby Blog : https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/warlord-games-epic-punic-wars-week-2-painting/ (https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/warlord-games-epic-punic-wars-week-2-painting/)
-
Certainly nice once you get a momentum going.
I am quite leased how the cavalry rank up, I had always though that 20mm bases were a bit shallow for the Epic horses, but those look fine.
I noticed in Smiths (UK store) this morning, that four out of the 5 sprues were represented ……. But no elephants!
Everything I saw looked really crisp and I like that the weapons (sword and spear) though finely cast are robust.
I was surprised to see any mags still left of the shelves.
-
It is looking interesting. but oh no, not another project ;D
I have a month left to resist the temptation but it does look, interesting.
-
Wow, they all look great! If I had a buyer for my painted 28s I think I'd make the switch myself. You are right, a table full of those is going to look like a proper battle!
-
Having already done them in a different scale is a problem.... I also have a Republican Army in 28mm.
When I've finished painting the Roman Division Box I will take some photos of both for comparison.
Sally 4th are taking pre-orders for all the Epic Punic War range at big pre-order discounts at the moment. https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/product-category/epic-battles-the-punic-wars// (https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/product-category/epic-battles-the-punic-wars//)

Bought 4 copies of WI in the end (2 Roman, 1 Celt and 1 Carthage) planning on starting painting this weekend. Decide at the weekend wether to purchase Roman box set or the full Hannibal set
Steve
-
Is it free postage on the site Chris for thr Hanninal set
Steve
-
Steve, I have ordered and there is postage. there are quite a few postage options, including overseas.
I had pre-ordered elsewhere, but I thought the prices here were too good to ignore, so I cancelled the other order and have gone with Chris instead.
-
Hi Steve,
Unfortunately we are not able to offer free postage as well as more than 20% discount.
Postage is calculated at cost via the Royal Mail API taking into account weight, size and destination.
Cheers,
Chris

Thanks Chris
Undecided between the hannibal set or 2 x Roman Scipio Africanus sets. Do you stock the Roman command set
-
I will check with Warlord Games on Monday.
At the moment stock has not been sent out, just preview packs etc.
Release date is 27th July.
-
Hi Chris
Any update on the command packs, I am planning to place order tonight
Steve
-
less than 3 weeks to launch day!
-
With more pictures coming out over time I'm finding the individual models much more appealing than the block formations, which makes me sad considering that is part of the appeal of the era and scale to me.
Your painted samples with some nice color variation on the clothing and the like does make them much more appealing to me as well I have to say!
-
Steve,
I have emailed my Warlord trade manager about Command Sets, will let you know when I get a reply.
I am very excited about the range, and have really enjoyed painting the solid blocks of infantry, and 30 to a base does look impressive, as well as the less dense individual models. They all look great.
We still have the range on pre-order discount of just over 20% discount until they are available for shipping on 27th.

Ordered and starting to get increasingly excited. has.been and I are splitting a box between us which should give us a large number of DBA armies. I will be bouncing off the walls by the 27th. ;D

Me too! ;D

I've just started painting the Roman cavalry this morning.

I have just heard back from Warlord Games, that the resin commander sets will also be available for shipping on 27th July.

Hey ho I have measured the epic Romans and they are 16mm to top of helmet (not including the plume). In other words, pretty normal 15mm "scale". So I am wondering now about what other (metal) manufacturers will fit with them.
For now, I am just thinking about mounted officers and standard bearers, perhaps metal Hannibal and Scipio?
-
James, the respective Roman / cargthage base sets have a Scipio Africanus or Hannibal Barca mounted figure as appropriate. The battle box has both. They are done in SioCast resin.
They also do two commander packs, some have felt a tad dear at £20 each, but the models look nice and there are more in them than previous Epic commander packs encouraging two figure basing. I have been pleased with their commander packs in other Epic periods.
If Chris can get hold of them discounted on pre-order, it would be worth pouncing on.
For metal, Peter Pig are on the ‘truer’ side of 15mm.
-
Thanks Norm. The whole project was has.been's idea so I was going to let him have both the personality figures in the box while I looked around for some others .
As you say the commander sets are a bit pricey although I have no doubt they will be top quality.
So you recommend Peter Pig? I will check them out.
-
Sally 4th does have the commander sets at a pre-order discount.
https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/product-category/epic-battles-the-punic-wars/ (https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/product-category/epic-battles-the-punic-wars/)
The resin command figures, for me are very much 'nice to have' rather than essential. There are plenty enough mounted generals in plastic on the basic sprues. For example, The Republican Roman Division box (which I'm painting up at the moment), is £31 RRP, £24.75 at pre-order discount from Sally 4th. It has enough models for a complete army for Mortem et Gloriam (Pacto) at around 2500 points. There are 4 mounted generals. I have placed two on a base for overall general and two one to a base as sub general.
I will double check when I get home, but I am pretty certain that when I measured the miniatures at the start of the project they came in at 13.5mm from foot to eye. Small 15mm figures may mix in OK, especially for generals and light troops, where you only need a few models on a base.
For me, what makes it different (and more attractive) than traditional 15mm is the ease of painting strips of models and the look of dense dense blocks of heavy infantry, 30 to a 60mm x 20mm base. I would be interested to see how many 15mm figures you could squeeze on to that sized base, and what they look like compared to these blocks?
This is a unit of 120 Hastati that I finished a few days ago.

The 8 bases of Hastati & Principes painted up with some Allied Italian Infantry to there rear.
I am hoping that by the end of the weekend, I will have completed the Triari, Cavalry and the Velites and Generals so I can do a photo shoot showing everything you get in a Roman Division box.
-
The Hastati look exceptional, very nice.

Hi Chris, they may well be, but I don't measure to the eyes! They are 16mm to the top of the head.
-
Nicely done stuff! The hastati most especially look great.
-
This morning I completed the Republican Roman Division box set.
The last units to be completed were the cavalry and the generals.

In my hobby blog I have also taken some photographs of the same army, with same units and same number of bases using 28 mm metal Wargames Foundry miniatures.
My rough estimate is that an army built using epic scale miniatures is going to be about a third of the cost of one using 28mm plastic figures. This is another subject I look at a bit closer in my blog. At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference, however I do like the look of 120 figure units!

-
Thanks for comparing. I really like 28’s, but for me, the visual of the Epic is better, you have done a really nice job on them.
I have the Roman sprue from the Wargames Illustrated magazine and I quite like their robust and easy handling nature, now really looking forward to release day.
-
One of the games (other than Epic Hail Caesar) I am planning to use my new epic armies in is, Mortem et Gloriam which is one of my favourite Ancient Rulesets.
I have put together an initial army list.
One of the things that I like is that you can play at different levels, with different number of bases as your collection grows. This army list is for Pacto, that does not need so many bases, in fact the Republican Roman Divisin box gives a whole army for Pacto (for less than £25!)
https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/warlord-games-epic-punic-wars-week-4-republican-roman-division-complete/ (https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/warlord-games-epic-punic-wars-week-4-republican-roman-division-complete/)
-
This morning I completed the Republican Roman Division box set.
The minis turned out great! :-*
Just one thing... according to the Warlord website, the Roman Division has only one stand each of heavy and light Roman cavalry.

Yes... and no. They actually have 8 heavy and 8 light cavalry in set. I did cover this in my linked hobby blog article. You can build one base of each and have 3 left over, build two bases with 4 models on each base, or what I did which was to receive an extra sprue on cover of Wargames Illustrated and use the extra 2 light and heavy.
-
Thanks for the review/work in process reports and notes on painting in you blog.
I think these figures certainly have merit and are probably a great product for those who just want a quickly painted army. The middle rank of Roman heavy infantry is very clever.
I am surprised the Romans are in three ranks while the Carthaginian heavies are in two. It dose make the cavalry look a little sparse, but there is nothing stopping someone using them at double depth. I was also surprised that the triarii are treated the same as hastati/princepes. Surely there would have been an argument to have these in fewer ranks to represent the smaller number of these troops.
Your painting is effective and clearly used a quick paint approach. If someone was even more averse to painting it looks like these could just about be painted with a thick brush in a couple of broad strokes along all the shields in one go and then a smaller brush across all the faces and again with the helmets.
If they plan to bring out Hoplites I would be interested.

Indeed, and another option would be to use a can of coloured primer in majority colour and then quickly pick out a few pieces in different colours.
-
We must be getting really close :-)
I have just seen an unboxing video on YouTube. The Decals look really pleasing and the big battle box includes a board game of sorts, which is a paper map with the playing area divided into large squares, looks like a nice way to get a quick game going on the ordinary domestic table, with unpainted troops being fine to start with.
The boxed is FILLED with troops! I think I read somewhere that this is the biggest thing that they have put out in the Epic range.
Really looking forwards to this - good price, thanks Chris.
I have always been fascinated by the Trebbia battle and may years ago, did it in 2mm! I think my start with this set will be to collect together the forces for the Trebbia battle. this will give me a focus on a specific order of battle to paint. I might even bath-tub it down initially. I am okay with playing with unpainted stuff, while elements of it cycle across the painting table.
-
There is a very interesting video over on YouTube by 7th Son. He was sent some sprues by Warlord Games a few weeks ago and has been busily painting them up and has now put on a meeting engagement game, a scenario from the rulebook.
He does a lot of video action reports and their focus is gaming on the kitchen table, a sort of gaming for all approach.
If you are are on the fence about buying into this, I think his forces and table will tip you over the edge :-)

Hi Norm,
Thanks for sharing that link, that does look like a lot of fun.

Over the weekend I painted up a first base of Carthaginian War Elephants
(https://ik.imagekit.io/1qkndzqt9i/wp-content/uploads/IMG_3950-768x1024.jpg)
I did take a slightly different approach. The crew were painted on the sprue, and the paintwork touched up when they were cut free and glued in place. I temporarily glued (using UHU) the elephants on to standard 60mm x 20mm bases to make painting easier. Everything was sprayed with Halford’s Auto Primer, Matt White and then washed over with a brown / sepia ink wash. When the ink was completely dry, I drybrushed Matt White acrylic over the whole model using a make up brush. I find that the brown ink wash does a great job amplifying the shade when you apply Army Painter Speedpaint over the top. It also puts a nice neat brown line around each part that helps to deliver a tabletop ready job with minimum effort.

That was my take on it, and why I've gone all in for Epic Punic Wars but not any of the previous ones.

Very nice painting !!!
It can't be easy to paint at this scale.

Thanks, glad you like it, but it is in fact really very easy to paint figures that look great in this scale, probably easier than painting 28mm figures.

I've put a step by step painting guide showing how to I paint them on my hobby blog.
It's all down to good prep with white primer followed by a brown ink wash, and then Army Painter Speed Paints.
The step by step guide is @ https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/warlord-games-epic-punic-wars-roman-infantry-painting-guide/ (https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/warlord-games-epic-punic-wars-roman-infantry-painting-guide/)

That's great. What are you going to paint first?
Do share when you've got some painting or gaming done.

Vodkafan & I received our package today. :D :D :D
We were going to carefully work out what was needed for various DBA armies, BUT...
instead we just took half each (I got the generals, he got the Watch Tower).
NB
He has already started painting. lol

For no particular reason that I can fathom, Trebbia 218 BC has always been a favourite of mine, so I think I will start by specifically collecting and painting that order-of-battle.
I also do a lot of boardgaming and have a very nice take on Trebbia in GMT’s SPQR Deluxe module, so I will be running these together as a joint project.
The Battle Pack also has its own boardgame ‘Scipio’. So I am sure that will be woven in somewhere/
I have started a ‘project page’ on my Commanders site for anyone interested.

I simply love how a single battle in history can make a fellow hobbyist so focused on replaying it (and painting lots of cool toy soldiers). Very inspiring! Looking forward to seeing where this will end.

Just a quick update to anyone interested in Epic Punic Wars that did not pre-order.
We still have two each of the big £95 Starter Army Sets for Romans and Carthaginians left over from when we shipped all our pre-orders. These are still available reduced from £95 to £76, and we have a few rulebooks left at discounted pre-order prices as well.

I am back painting Epic Punic War miniatures.
At the weekend I painted two bases of Carthaginian Elephants.

I have made a short YouTube video with a step by step painting guide : https://youtu.be/HjnKX8roj9I?si=0AJueECa_2Aozcbr (https://youtu.be/HjnKX8roj9I?si=0AJueECa_2Aozcbr)

Liked the video. Well done!

Thanks, I'm loving this range.
I've just worked out the gaps I need in the two sides to kick of my Hannibal campaign with the crossing of the Rhone. This includes another 26 bases of Celt Infantry. I'm doing an unboxing video for the Celts tomorrow and then cracking on with the painting!
-
I've just put together a first look / unboxing video, taking a peek inside the Epic Scale Celt Army box!

Thanks Chris, I was going to ask whether the crew were glued in first and then painted or painted first and then glued …… the video answered that! They look great all based up.
The inboxing is interesting, that booklet is the best ‘in box’ support that I have seen for Epic - nice touch. They at least make sure that you know what is what on the sprue ….. something they have not always done in the past!
-
Thanks Norm, glad you like what I'm doing. The elephant crew figures are, I think the only figures ever that I have painted on the sprue, but it does make it a lot easier to pick them up and hold them while painting and a lot more accessible than if you glued them in first.
How is your epic project going? Have you painted your set up yet?
-
No - it is still in the queue … worse, Epic Revolution has since been bought. On the painting sticks today I have Epic Prussian musketeers, so the brush is busy, but Hannibal waits patiently …… however, I have cut enough figures from the sprues to do the Trebbia Scenario.
i am just working out how I want to base them and have temporarily attached to bases with a jelly type glue stuff (the sort of sticky putty that keeps freebies on the front of magazines). I am okay with gaming with the raw plastic while things get painted. I might take a break from napoleonics and do those elephants next - they do look lovely.
I am probably going to do my warband on a 60mm deep base, with a few chopped up, so that they are not in neat ranks. Two bases side by side can be the unit. I got a freebie sprue off one of the magazines recently and it had the chariot on it, so I am trying to work out how I can do a warband with the chariot embedded within the warband base, just for a visual difference.
