To give myself a bit of an incentive to get some hobby stuff done, I have recently toyed with the idea to do some zombie gaming. I came upon the Osprey rule set Last Days and bought that and the expansion Last Days: Seasons and I have an interested member at my gaming club.
With that in place, there was no turning back now. I procured some Mantic All Out War Walking Dead minis, some TT Combat MDF scenery and have a couple of 1/43 diecast cars ordered. We plan to start playing in April, when other games I'm involved in are coming to a natural end.
The rules look nice, a few minor typos but still nice books.
Most of the miniatures were already painted, but I wasn't happy with them so stripped them and am in the process of repainting.
TT Combat has been my "go-to" provider of MDF terrain for years. They look very nice, especially with the Heroic 28mm (32mm) scale and when you put some paint on them they shine. IMHO, best bang for your buck.
-
First painted miniatures. Andrea and two zombies.
I like the Mantic AOW WD miniatures, they have decent detail and paint up very quickly. I use Armypainter Speedpaint 2.0 almost exclusively and I am not a great painter, but I can finish a hero model in 20 minutes so that gets things done.
I think I'll leave the zombies with light grey/ white base and keep the hero miniatures with the Murder Scene base colour to differentiate between them.
Some Armypainter Glistening Blood effect paint was watered down and flicked at the zombies with a cheap brush, looks ok to me.
I tried to give Andrea a blouse and cardigan paintjob.
The miniatures will all be painted up first and then I'll varnish them all in one go, so that's still to do.
-
Nice start, hope to see some battle pictures in 2025.
-
Two more miniatures finished this morning, Rick Grimes and Mr Greene. I only watched the first few episodes and kind of lost interest after that and have never read the comic but that shouldn't be a problem should it :D.
I will probably end up ordering some bits and bobs from Anvil Industries to "pimp" the minis. Rucksacks, extra weapons (the Dragunov kit for my designated marksperson...)
-
Nice start, hope to see some battle pictures in 2025.
Thank you Spinal Tap!
I have given myself the timeframe of until April to get the project done, or at least game ready. Lacking a proper facility to spray paint in and the weather doesn't really help, but I have a club member who's kindly offered the use of his shed :D.
-
A good start.
How about the buildings?

How about the buildings?
Thank you sir.
I will doodle with the collection when I have time and energy, and when work is not interfering. It will probably be bursts of activity followed by times of inactivity, due to long term health issues. But I have good hopes that April will be an achievable target!
I have decided I will start with the easier smaller kits, like the playground and the bus stops. Possibly before the end of the year.
-
Great start! Very gory zombies…
The one thing I was ambivalent about with TT combat MDF buildings was not all have individual floors so you can game inside of them. Look forward to seeing more…!

Thank you sir!
To my knowledge, at least the kits I have bought and owned, all those came with detachable roofs so you could game internally.
I have several kits assembled in my Wild West thread: https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=144836.0
But happy to show what they look like when I build and paint them.
-
Had a quick dryfit and assembly of the TT Combat Playground kit. Very easy and straight forward, no instructions needed :).
Rick Grimes from Mantic Games' The Walking Dead supplied for scale.
Hope to get this painted up before the end of the year.
-
It's a dangerous route I've taken! I've now also bought County Roads Z rules as they seem to be exactly what i was looking for lol.
Christmas Eve and the first painted and varnished models for the genre. Mantic games Walking Dead minis. I will most likely buy some extra bits, like weapons, backpacks, tools etc from various manufacturers and "pimp" my figures :D.
-
County Road Z is very cool. I ended up not going with it because it is more focused on the “between the games” campaign aspects. With my regular Sunday night gaming group, that would be problematic to hammer out all the details.
Have fun!

As others have mentioned, you're off to a good start! Keep it up! :D

I really enjoyed the Five Parsecs From Home rules and am going to play it solo, so I'm very much looking forward to that.
The Last Days that started all this is for the club game. Not sure if we can manage a whole season campaign. We meet once a week but sometimes my work commitments stop me from coming and we all want some variety in gaming, rarely playing the same game twice. But maybe, maybe there's a campaign in store for us.
-
As others have mentioned, you're off to a good start! Keep it up! :D
Thank you CapnJim! I seem to have found some motivation and energy so I have hopes to have this project game ready by April, fingers crossed.
-
With some newfound motivation and energy, I have made some progress on the project.
Today, I tried out my own little home made spray booth (cardboard box) and finished off the TT Combat MDF Playground. Worked a treat and with windows open to ventilate and facemask on, I had no problems whatsoever :). Living in a flat provides its challenges...
Started cleaning and dry fitting the TT Combat MDF Bus Shelter.
-
That playground looks great! Great addition to any modern battlefield...I have 3-D printed one I've used from time to time in my Mean Streets gang warfare scenarios.

Thanks Mike! I also think that's a great addition to a zombie apocalypse setting. I am slowly building up a collection and painting figures and scenery as my mood takes me. The TT Combat scenery scales very well with Heroic 28mm figures and the playground was nice and simple to assemble, lick of spray paint and some PVA glue application, done. Didn't take me very long :).
-
I seem to have gotten some motivation and energy to keep at this project, which is a very good thing. Had a little extra time over the Christmas period so put that to good use. I think one of the main things is that with the Armypainter Speedpaints 2.0, I can paint up a figure in 15-20 minutes, so if I have an hour spare I can get a couple of figures done :).
I tried to do some lettering for the first time :o! With a 3.5 magnifier and a 10/o brush I gave it a go, it's supposed to say HEAVY METAL on the back of the denim jacket. Did go light as I didn't want to risk messing it up too badly...
Also did a very simple conversion bit, blu tack and a cocktail stick cut to size. Hey, presto, our unarmed metal head is now dual wielding some Escrima sticks :D.
The bus stop came together very nicely, but putting it together, I had an "accident" (heavy clumsy hands >:()! I decided to go with that, because when was the last time you saw a bus shelter that wasn't vandalised to some degree ;).
I like that little "time table" detailing. Very nice, simple easy kit and very reasonably priced.
-
Coming together nicely. The park and bus stops will go together thematically very nicely.
-
Coming together nicely. The park and bus stops will go together thematically very nicely.
Thank you Easy E! That's a bonus, as I primarily bought the kits so I had some nice scenery on the table :).
-
Taking full advantage of less health problems these past days and less work, I have gotten more bits done for my zombie gaming needs.
The ambulance and response car are 1/43 diecasts that I bought off Ebay. I think those'll do the trick :).
The TT Combat MDF Mini Mart took me roughly 5hrs to paint and assemble. I printed off some wall and floor patterns and glued on, alongside some zombie apocalypse 28mm posters I had nearly forgotten about. I find myself enjoying putting extra little bits on, not too much mind, to enhance a model.
-
Your tabletop is definitely coming together! Look forward to seeing some game reports.
As for lettering, micron pens (available at craft store or art supply) are your friend for that. Much easier to control a pen than a brush, for some reason...at least for me!

Thanks for the advice and encouragement Mike!
It's very satisfying to see I get things done and progress is being made. It's so disenheartening to have all your initial excitement and plans about a project and see it falling through for whatever reason that may be. I think for me, the key is to keep at it when I'm able to and have a clear plan. I.e. this or that building next or those three minis next.
I started with the simplest, easiest MDF buildings and make my way to the bigger more complex ones. I also find painting three minis at a time is a magic number and time I can find more easily.
As for game reports, the Last Days will have to wait until April at the earliest, as I'm currently participating/ running other games at my club.
However, depending on when it's done, I might give County Roads Z a go with accompanying batrep. Possibly in January/ February :D.
-
Managed to finish one more building before the end of the year :).
This time, it's the TT Combat City Scenic MDF Coffee Shop. I like the added details of advertisements and tables, chairs and cups. I have a few things I'm not sure what they're actually for, as the instructions could be a bit better and more detailed, but I suspect they might be wall lighting fixtures ???
I will most likely go back over all the kits and "rough" them up a bit, add blood spatter etc, but only when they've been built and painted in the first place. I don't want to risk grinding to a halt because I'm fiddling with the kits and not finishing the collection for the upcoming game. I'd rather have them table ready first.
Next up, I'm going to take a little break from MDF kits and get a few miniatures painted up to do something different for a bit.
-
That looks quite good! I’ve got a similar zombie project in mind and have been considering some of the same kits, so it’s great to see how yours turned out.

Thank you sir!
I think the TT Combat MDF kits scale very well with Heroic 28mm (32mm) figures. I used to play with them "bareboned" but since I've started putting some paint and effort in, I think that makes a LOT of difference.
The biggest draw for me with this company's kits, is that I think they are very reasonably priced and very good quality and standard for that.
-
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Starting 2025 with taking a stock and progress check on the project. I'm quite pleased to see I've gotten more done than I expected :).
I still have three TT Combat MDF kits to assemble and paint, hope to have those done by the end of the month.
I also have 22 minis to paint up, with a very likely 23rd to add to that. But then I'm pretty sorted for numbers.
On order is a job lot of 8 1/43 diecast cars I got for a tenner off Ebay, so with that my vehicle needs are pretty much sorted. Although, if anyone can point me in the direction of a couple of motorcycles/ ATV's and maybe an articulated lorry in 1/43 scale I'd be happy to have a look.
First picture is simply a group shot with all I have assembled and painted up for the game so far. Plenty of time until April ;).
The second picture is just to show what I have left to put together in terms of buildings. The Lone Pines Residence will be next on my list. After I've made a dent in the miniatures needing painting.

A filling station is a must-have for zombie scenarios...! Look forward to seeing it all put together. Mine was the Sarissa Precision one...

Well, blowing up gas pumps can be a way to get rid of many zombies. I don't know if there's a rule for that... :D

Those were exactly my thoughts! :D
Your station looks very good, nicely done! :-*
I hope mine will come out nicely too. I'm going to go with a green/ red colour scheme. Undecided whether I want to make the dinosaur red or green ;).

And the ensuing explosion is also a sure fire way of attracting even more lol.

With newfound energy and motivation in the zombie apocalypse genre, I give you, the first painted miniature for 2025! :o
Mantic games The Walking Dead Rick Grimes on horseback. My usual Armypainter Speedpaint 2.0 paint and some slapped on basing material, calling it done.
-
Nice.
-
They (rider and horse) look good!

Nice.
Cheers!

Thank you Sir! I think the Walking Dead sculpts are quite good, not too overly detailed but looks nice painted up. Quite happy with the result, dynamic figure :).
-
The latest building in my zombie apocalypse gaming project. Lone Pine Residence from TT Combat's MDF line. Came together quite nicely and I like the little extra bit in the form of a barbecue lol. I printed off some textures on bog standard A4 white paper and stuck on the interior walls and some floor texture in the same manner.
This time around I experimented with some Armypainter Glistening Blood, in an attempt to give a splattering effect and watered it down, probably too much, and it didn't run as I had expected :(, but I literally can't be bothered to rectify that so I'll keep it.
-
Looks great -- love the blood effects. I'm too cheap to do that because I want my buildings to be able to be used for a variety of periods... lol
I like the flooring inside - good job with it! :-*
Mike Demana
-
Excellent job! I have something similar planned for this spring, just need to find the time. I’ll be watching this thread for inspiration.

I am getting better at putting some extra efforts into a kit and enjoying the process of adding some simple things to make a big difference, but I have to watch myself so I "don't bite off more than I can chew". The key is to finish a building and move on to the next bit, NOT stopping to fiddle with umpteen little details and then come to a dreaded halt :o. When I've finished building the terrain and painted the minis, I MIGHT go back and add little bits, unless I'm onto a different project. My buildings will most likely only see two/ three different eras of gaming: the wild west, the zombie apocalypse or other disastrous circumstances, so a little blood spatter/ warning signs will feel right at home lol.
-

Thank you Pattus Magnus!
I would be very pleased if you got some inspiration out of this :), I'm enjoying the collecting and creating. For once I think I've "done it right". I've assembled some bits, but not gone overboard and I have a generous time frame. The game is not really due until April at the earliest.
The recommendation I would like to give, but that's my opinion of course, is that: if you plan to game in 28mm, Sarissa Precision is probably a better option and if you play in Heroic 28mm/32mm I would go with TT Combat. I think the TT Combat kits are a little bit larger so looks better at the table with the Heroic sizes, although both are very viable options.
-
Thanks for that suggestion, Legionnaire, I’ve wondered about that. Most of my survivors are 28mm and the zeds are a mix of 28mm and Zombicide (32mm ?) figures. I have one TT Combat house (Coyote Manor), but haven’t assembled it yet. TT Combat is great for price and will match the house I have, but Sarissa models also look great… decisions, decisions!
-
Keeping at it with my Last Days project. Day off so spent roughly 2 hours painting up these 6 zombies. I experimented a bit with Armypainter Glistening Blood effect paint.
"Flicking" it off the brush proved unsatisfactory, as the paint is fairly thick and sticks well to the brush.
I had previously watered it down, hoping it would run, but it didn't perform as expected, and being watered down it took on a more pink hue.
This time I tried blowing the paint off the brush to create a spatter pattern. That proved to work ok, but I really had to use my lung power lol. Having a cardboard box behind to catch the spatter is a VERY good idea :o.
I also received my Anvil Industries delivery. Man, those bits are nice :-*. Just a few things to try my hand at modifying a model for the upcoming games, to give them a WYSIWYG. The backpacks will be painted up in bright civilian colours lol and the Dragunov will be added to my "designated sharpshooter".
I have no bits box of my own, but a gentleman at my club has kindly offered to have a rummage and see what he has that can fit. I expect that some survivors will be kitted out with some WWII surplus gear/ weapons lol.
-
More good progress.
And don't sweat the blood on the house not running down. Unless there's a lot, it tends to just smear or spot. Don't ask how I know..... :o

Thank you for your kind words CapnJim, always appreciated.
I work in a place where there's frequent "blood letting", and agree with your ;), but I thought it'd be a nice little effect to have that trickle.
-
Looking forward to seeing what you do with the Anvil components.
-
Looking forward to seeing what you do with the Anvil components.
Nothing too exciting. Just a splash of paint and a glob of blu tack so I can stick it on a model and also take it off them as necessary. I'm having some other bits coming my way, and they will have the same "El Chepo modular" function lol.
-
I've varnished the zombies and painted up the backpacks and Dragunov and varnished those.
Pretty pleased with the zed's if I may say so lol.
I've used Andrea from Mantic's Walking Dead range to illustrate, how I easily can attach the weapon and backpack, with only a simple glob of blue tack.
-
That works very nicely! I have based all of my backpack, briefcase, etc. scatter on tiny round bases. I will typically set it next to them to show they have found supplies, or whatever. I like the way you did that, though. Looks great!

Thank you very much Mike!
It's the kind encouragement from the members here that keeps me going and keeping the enthusiasm and creativity for the project :). I enjoy putting a little bit of "extras" on both buildings and minis, but still "a little bit goes a long way".
I am most likely just going to use the card supply/ item tokens from Mantic's AOWTWD, because they will work nice and easy with both Last Days and County Road Z.
-
Painted up 3 more survivors and some weapons from Max Mini. Used a couple of paints I don't use a lot, but when your options are limited, you take that purple hoodie and suck it up, better clothed than dead lol.

One would think that would be the case, but more than a few of the young lads and ladies around here seem willing to risk losing appendages to frostbite in the winter, as long as they’re wearing the right “influencer approved” clothes. I’m not sure that a zombie apocalypse would be enough to shift their attitudes, as -40 C doesn’t have an impact! I completely agree that it’s good to get some mileage out of those less-used colours, though. Maybe it fits, too, as I have trouble imagining the fashion kids surviving much. ;)

That attitude might change very quickly when it's proven that "influencer approved" kit isn't particularly zombie resistant ;). Might...

That’s a good idea - using under-used colours. My painting is mainly of figures from the thirties so less chance to use the purples, bright reds etc. but next time I venture into a different era - let the vivid colours roll….!
Those last three you’ve painted are my favourite so far - the jeans on the one on the left are excellent. Looking forward to more.

Thank you very much Sir for your input! :)
I am very happy with my Armypainter Speed Paints 2.0, I use almost exclusively those (except when painting terrain/ buildings). Mainly because I can get things done reasonably quickly (20 minutes/ mini or so) when I have time and my health allows it. A gentleman at my gaming club, when we were talking about "how many shades of colour X do you need" said, "I have 22 bottles of different shades of green alone" :o.
And those miniatures you paint are so full of character and the vignettes and the stories tied to the pictures are very well executed! Many thanks for your postings sir :D!
I have to agree, those jeans turned out very well if I may say so myself ;), but I think I like how the lady on the right turned out. Still, very satisfied with how the collection comes along. There might be more things done over the next couple of days, fingers crossed.
-
Nice job there. And I agree about the less-often-used colors. Modern civilian0y figures are a good excuse to use them...

Indeed!
-
A gentleman at my club was kind enough to have a look in his bit box and I now have these delightful little bits that I can add to my survivors. The sprue says "Bolt Action U.S. Airborne" and the axes will be shortened (hand bits cut off).
-
Petrol station/ gas station/ filling station/ bensinmack/ Tankstelle... different words for the same thing, depending on where you are in the world lol.
TT Combat's Dinogas Deluxe MDF scenery. Nice to work with and lovely details, BUT... a PITA to paint ALL the letterings and lines, especially when your hands aren't that steady anymore >:(. I got there in the end but it took me several hours to do the letters and lines alone.
Hasslefree's Not-Sam and Not-Dean Winchester and a 1/43 scale 1967 Chevy Impala model for size comparison.
-
You did a top job on that one :)
-
Nice👍 So the signs are etched in the mdf? And you have to paint them in? I can see that would be quite a faff. Came out well, though. Reminds me that I need a 1930s garage/petrol station.
Doug

Thank you very much Gunbird!
It was worth the effort, let's say that ;).

Thank you very much Sir!
Well, the green background bits are grey card, so separate bits. At least I could spray the green and the red bits separately, but all the lettering and the lines I painted in by hand. Slow and steady was the way forward and I nearly mounted a sign upside-down :o. Luckily I realised that mistake before my "Strong as an Ox" PVA glue had set properly lol. But for £19 for the kit, I have no reason to complain!
-
Very nice.
-
Congrats to you on persevering through on that lettering. I would have been tempted to just print it out and glue it over the etched lettering... :D

I think it contributes to the "rustic, slightly worse off than brand new" look in the post apocalypse landscape lol.

Finished painting up the 4 plastic vehicles that comes in the Mantic Walking Dead Scenery Pack. Very good value for the money, as the pack also contains 6 barricades and 10 Supply Markers. Those I'll do another day.
I first sprayed the vehicles in the designated colour and painted in tyres, hub caps, lights and windshields. I found a simple tutorial for windshields online (black, dark blue and streaks with lighter blue/ white), which turned out ok. I finished off with splashing some watered down Armypainted Rust effect paint on them.
As the Brits say: "that'll do!"
-
I have that same set - I agree, it is definitely worth getting. Yours look great, as do the windshields. Nicely done!
Mike Demana
-
Thank you for your kind words sir! The collection is coming together nicely and I have a few things en route (Hasslefree minis, a helicopter + motorcycle model kit and Bachmann O scale trailer park).
I aim to buy a couple of Eureka minis bicycles and an ATV or two, but after that, I have pretty much everything I need for the collection. Just need to assemble and paint the bits I have left to do. April still holds as "deadline" (personally imposed to get things done).
-
The rest of the Mantic Walking Dead Scenery Pack painted and varnished. 6 barricades and 10 Resource Markers. Andrea from Mantic AOWTWD, who's becoming a bit of a poster girl for my stuff to show how it all scales.
-
Great progress on this thread. Love the cars. I will need to take a look for that kit.
-

Cheers Easy E!
That Mantic scenery kit is very well worth the money. You get 2 trucks, 2 sedans, 6 barricades and 10 resource markers. Here in the UK they are in the region of £25-30.
-
Nice work.
-
Yeah - nice gas station. A gas station is on my "To Do" list...
-
Thank you very much CapnJim!
Yes, a petrol station is a MUST! lol
I now also have a trailer park to put together and my eye on a plasticville diner kit...
-
With a rare Saturday at mostly my disposal, I spent most of the day finishing off a few things for the project.
I bought the Bachmann O scale Trailer Park plastic kit. Works very well with 28mm and once repainted, a very nice addition to the gaming table. Reasonably priced at £21. The first picture is what the kit looks like right out of the box, later on my repsprayed kit.
I received some pouches, knives, grenades, rifles, sword, axes (had to cut the hands off those) and even a carrier pigeon lol, mostly Bolt Action US Paratrooper bits, from the bits box of one of the members at my gaming club. I gave them some quick paints and with a glob of blu tack, I now have a very easy way of achieving "modular" gaming lol. It looks like the sling to the rifle is broken, but I think it's just funny camera angles.
-
Wow, that was fast! Everything's looking good... :-*

Indeed! Because I have limited time for the hobby, I try to make the most of it when I can. Which means, I actually "plan" ahead in the manner that, "next time I will get X done" and the importance is that I stick to that. Better getting a productive hour or two, or as in this case, a very rare half a day than willy-nilly bits here and there without actually nothing being done :(.
It also helped that both dispatch and delivery were done within 2 days of ordering :).
And having found that these Bachmann O gauge kits looks nice with my miniatures, I now have an eye on one or two others...
-
Interesting. But progress is progress. Good job!
-
Interesting. But progress is progress. Good job!
Indeed Sir!
I take a personal pleasure out of my progress. Stuff is being done, with a clear gaming purpose in sight and the time frame is holding! Probably as good as I have ever done in the hobby! On more occasions than I care to remember, I have been biting off more than I can chew, gaming plans coming to nought, projects stalling because of lack of enthusiasm etc. This time I aim to see it all through!
Many thanks for your comment CapnJim!
-
So, I needed some more diverse vehicles besides cars. A gentleman gave me a tip on a very reasonably priced 1/48 plastic kit containing a police helicopter and a police motorcycle.
I have put the motorcycle together and will do the helicopter soon. I aim to put them together, spray and paint the parts and putting the glass parts on last before final assembly. This is actually my first attempt in 40 years to put a proper model kit together :o. Fingers crossed.

Are you gonna use the bike alone, or the cop too?

Are you gonna use the bike alone, or the cop too?
In the first place, I was looking for a motorcycle, as different vehicles can be procured by the survivors and used in the games. I will most likely paint it all up, motorcycle, cop, helicopter and the crew and use them as "casualties" on the table. It would seem daft to get all this stuff in the kit and only use the motorcycle :). :)

That's very kind of you sir!
We are having a fantastic time, lovely weather and my teenage daughter had declared that this is where she will be retiring, bless lol.

Oi - you’re supposed to be on holiday - less of the LAF already :D
Take a step back ;)
Glad you and your daughter are having a good time.

Had a good read through and really enjoyed seeing your project develop. Scenery and minis look great, some very useful inspiration there. Like you, I've just bought the Plasticville trailer park, which looks to be ideal for these games.

I'm now back safely in the UK, had a lovely holiday :).
Unfortunately, currently, ALL motorcycle figures are sold out so I'm waiting for a restock. But I'm not in a particular hurry as I have April as kind of my deadline.

Thank you very much sir! I use almost exclusively Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0, so this is Warrior Skin, over a light grey with white zenithal undercoat. Being of Indian (Asian) descent, I aimed for a darker one and I think this worked out well. I have to say, after all that, the miniature was worth waiting for :). It's a cracking model. And she didn't disappoint in the game either, performed above all expectations lol.

This model is from Hasslefree miniatures in the UK, sir. Sculpted and casted, all to a very high quality, crisp, clean and nary a mold line. I believe the owners are having some serious health issues to battle with, so orders may take a little while to being sorted, but I have had excellent service from them in the past. The Elvis impersonator with a handgun is also a very cool figure.

I have high hopes that I will be able to finish all the stuff in time for our premier gaming of Last Days in about a month's time.
Yesterday, having a rare Sunday to myself, I finished painting the remaining 10 zombies. They are literally "bodies on the floor" so quick very quick pj's. No significant "screen time" so that'll do ;).
I also finished off the plastic kit 1/48 police motorcycle I have. I found the water transfers a VERY challenging affair >:(. If they didn't stick, they stuck to anything but the intended bit! Only through sheer bulldogged determination did I manage to see it through. This did put me off so much in fact, that I doubt I will finish the helicopter that also comes with this kit, and have even MORE transfers to fit :o! Did not enjoy that at all!
It's done now anyways.
(EDIT: The bloody water transfers on the clear plastic come off!!! Sod that!)
-
Well...at least it looks nice! :D I am hopeless when it comes to decals and water transfers, too. lol

It looks great - would you mind reminding me who makes it?

The bike does look good.
I generally have good luck with decals, but every now and then...

Thank you sir! It was nice to assemble and painted up well, it was just the decal debacle :-[. It's an Academy Police Helicopter 500D 1/48 plastic kit. Got mine off Ebay for about £11 with p&p. I might just skip the decal's for the helicopter.

Legionnaire.

I’m very tempted by that and the chopper would come in handy as well.
Thanks for the info.

Small update to the project. In December I decided that I wanted to do some zombie apocalypse gaming this year and I bought some MDF buildings, minis etc. I have given myself a deadline by April, as we plan to try out the Osprey Last Days rules then.
Bar a handful of survivors and one MDF building, I am pretty much there :D. I got some bonus spare guns (variety of assault rifles, handguns, shotguns) and some pouches/ packs, which are a great addition that I probably will put some paint on as well.
Today, I cut out the scenery from the last remaining MDF building. 15 sheets! :o It's the PCPD Main Building from TT Combat. A prison in other terms ;). I hope to have time to dry fit it, paint and assemble over the coming week.
Current state and what it (hopefully) will look like when finished. Rattle cans for the major part will be the way forwards with so many pieces.
-
What does PCPD stand for? Politically Correct Police Department? :D
Looks like you’ve got a few bits to sort out but it looks like it’ll be a valuable addition to your scenery - look forward to seeing it done.
Doug
ps: what does "rattle cans for the major part……."mean? That’s one I’ve not heard before ;)
-

i think PCPD is anyone's guess lol! I have tried to figure that out on the TT Combat page, but so far I've failed. Pig City Police Department maybe ;).
I look forward getting that "last piece" of terrain built, but have a blister on my finger from all that cutting :o. Many, many pieces, both large and small :o.
I am unsure whether it's a British or American term, but "rattle can" means a normal spray can. The ball inside, when you shake it to mix the paint makes a rattling noise, hence the term :).

Legionnaire.

Good luck with the build! I had an interesting experience with an MDF building recently. First off, I suck at jigsaw puzzles. After failing to put together another much smaller and simpler MDF kit by the same manufacturer (Dad's Armies -- who purchased the Impudent Mortals line), I gave up on the two bigger ones. I took them to a local convention where the same manufacturer was going to be a vendor.
I sheepishly put them on his vendor table and confessed there was no way I'd ever be able to put them together. He asked if I wanted him to put them together for me? I said, "Sure! How much?" He said no charge, but it might take awhile for him to get to them. I explained they were NEVER going to get done sitting in my closet, so any timeframe was better than never. Wouldn't you know it, but he had the largest one completed before the end of the convention? That's service! :-*

What a gentleman! :-*
I have found MDF buildings very pleasant to work with. I like the smell of MDF, I like the price and I like working with it.
Sure, my first tries were probably a very frustrating bish-bosh bash affair, get it assembled on the table and play as it is. That was fine back then. But we all get better as we work with new stuff.
These days, I always give the material a quick wipe with a damp cloth to get rid of residue from the laser cutting. I then cut everything out and most importantly, I dry fit the whole build before I do the next thing. That saves me a lot of headache and I can see if I make any mistakes etc.
Then, I "colour code" the pieces, I mainly just spray paint them. Then, only after that is done do I do the final assembly.
I sometimes add wall papers, carpets etc but I am very happy with my efforts, it's very satisfying to see the finished piece. I enjoy the quiet focus when working. I have no pod casts, no music no tele on to distract me.
Regards,
Legionnaire.
-
More progress! Stage 2.
I spent a couple of hours this afternoon to dryfit the building and glue some bits together. Those are going to be a uniform colour anyways.
Apart from one part when I at first couldn't figure out how it possibly would fit together and one part when I had to give some slots a little trim to fit, it went well together.
Tomorrow will probably see the spray painting of the building and assembly by the end of the week, hopefully.
-
So far, so good.
And I agree with you - I like doing up mdf stuff. I too like that smell. When I get back from visiting me brother in Florida at the end of March, I'm gonna give figures a break for a bit, and work on some vehicles and Terrain (including several mdf buildings...). Mind you, I'll post pics of the stuff as I finish it in my relevant threads here on the LAF.
-
That looks like it will be a very cool addition to your upcoming scenery 👍. Those cells will be very handy.
What are the bits in the final photo - are they the waste or are they something?
Nice work on the dry fit.

With the options of playing some Story Missions when characters progress from Tier 1 to 2 and from 2 to 3, I think I'll give one of those a spin in a cramped, claustrophobic indoors zombie infested prison at some point :o! Most likely it'll be tying into Billy-Ray's or Kelly-Ann's background fluff, but could also be used for Bernice. I like to have options :).
Oh, that's the pile of windows, signs, corner pieces and other small bits, ALL to be sprayed white :o. Fousands of the little b*ggers!
Edit: changed my mind. Some will be white, others grey and some black. This is a prison after all so nor many gaudy colours lol.
Regards,
Legionnaire.
-
More progress. Stage 2.5 (ish).
I spent some time today colour coding the bits and spray painting them. I'm honestly not too fussed if the paint doesn't cover completely, after all it's supposed to be a run down prison somewhere :).
I still have to spray the interior colour on the walls and do some of the detailing (the signs, the posters, the cell numbers etc), but just showing you how many pieces there are in this kit :o!
I aim to have this finished and assembled by Friday evening. If I don't give myself deadlines, things slide and procrastinate :?.
Regards,
Legionnaire.
-
I call the prison done now! Took me longer than expected, mostly due to all those window sills and corner bits that had to be stuck on, but it'll do :).
-
You?ve done a nice job there and that?s an excellent addition to your scenery - there?s so many possibilities with that building and it?s big enough to have complete scenarios using nothing else. Big thumbs up from me👍

You are too kind sir and very happy that you're liking it.
Indeed sir. I am, in a game turn or two, depending how events unfold, going to use it in maybe a Chatacter Story Special Mission or as an Origin Special Mission in trying to determine the Rot beginning, cure etc.
I have 3 survivors left to paint up before I call the jnitial zombie apocalypse collection complete. And I have until end of April to do that so shouldn't be a problem ;).

Because I was struggling to get the mini I needed, I bought a box of Warlord Games Project Z Female Survivors off Evilbay for about ?15.
I only assembled the needed mini out of 10, but there's lots of extra weapons and accessories on the sprues, so I'll be doing them up as well.
Here's the initial stock take. I hope to get these done by Tuesday.

Located in an unattractive, out of the way location. Plenty of room for many different kinds of criminals residents. Staff there for you around the clock and with sturdy secure fitments, it's in high demand. Once you get in you never leave lol lol.

A. Great little lock-up you did there. Well done!
B. Those sprues are quite handy, aren't they? The Special Operators sprues have some individual weapons too (of various types), some with optics...

Thank you very much CapnJim. I personally have no experience of such institutions, bar a school trip to the equivalent of the county police station many moons ago.
I think you seem to get lots of useful stuff on the sprue. Only thing I lacked was a spare revolver or two.
Thanks for the tip sir, but I think I have more than I really need at the moment. I try to finish up what I bought for the setting in the first place before adding more. Might do something in the future.
Regards,
Legionnaire.

The guns, backpacks and pouched have had some paint slapped on them today. Varnish tomorrow.
In hindsight, I probably would've been much better off painting most of them still on the sprue. Cutting them out and trying to keep those tiny bits in place with blue tack for painting was not the smoothest operation...
Anyways, they?ll do.

Yeah - painting those on the sprue is the way to go. You can just touch 'em up once you clip 'em from the sprue... ;)

DONE!
When I started my zombie apocalypse back in December, I bought some stuff. ALL that has now been assembled and painted :o. Below is my collection so far. There will be an add or two of course, but the important thing is I have now accomplished what I aimed to do before end of April, so all good! :)
My buildings. All are TT Combat MDF kits.
Assorted vehicles. Some are probably 1/35 but I'm not that bothered. They'll do for a start.
Trailer park. Plasticville USA kit.
Zombies! All are Mantic Games All Out War Walking Dead.
Survivors. The ones in the front are my community in my County Roads Z solo campaign. All but one are Mantic Games All Out War Walking Dead.
Probably THE scenery for modern 28mm gaming. A true must have :D.
Conversion bits. A plethora of guns, rifles, bags, pouches etc to add to a mini with simple blue tack modular system.
The final three survivors! Painted this morning. Also Mantic Games All Out War Walking Dead.

IF you haven't already seen it, my next project, blaming in equal parts yourself and Sakuragi miniatures for leading me astray, a dive into Pulp Alley. The first miniatures are ordered..

We all struggle with that "oh shiny!" problem. But for once, I set myself an achievable time frame and didn't buy too much stuff.
I have a few Renedra tents coming and maybe another bit or two, but those are extra bonus bits so not too worried if they don't get done in the next month.

I hope to get these bits done next week when I have a couple of days off actually. Even though I like to spray my bits individually, I'm sure it still will be fine.

Great progress here, in the few weeks I've been out of the net. Well done, lad! 8)
-
Just before you walk away from this project, can I suggest you get a few 20' containers as terrain items? They turn up quite often here and there, and a couple of containers on the table are good, instant blocking terrain as well as a player magnet - every time they're convinced there's great stuff hidden inside, even when they're full of zombies!
I'm a fan of them in modern wargames, got them in 28mm (5) and 20mm (17) sizes - put a whole load on the table, a road and a portakabin and suddenly you have a container park/storage facility.

Reaper and Renedra both do 28mm shipping containers, there are several makers of mdf shipping containers (reasonably priced, too) but few card ones in 28mm.
It's funny really - 28mm is easier to find figures for but less easy to source good scenery/terrain, whilst in 20mm the terrain is plentiful (ho/oo railways) but you really need to search around for decent figures. Go figure!

Just realised I didn’t check the dimensions so I hope they’re the right size…! Not a big outlay even if they’re not.

Finished off some Renedra plastic tents, campfire and cots that I was given. Andrea from Mantic's Walking Dead for scale.
-
Nice job. Those tents are on my "To paint" list...

Thank you very much sir! They will come in handy.

Tents are an underappreciated resource, so many uses but so few makers.

Completely agree. I have a few of those Renedra pup tents in a bag on my 'when I get around to it' pile and I also have a couple of resin modern frame tents from Alternative Armies around somewhere - nominally 15mm but I might be able to use them for 20mm if I'm lucky. Modern looking tents are rare, almost unicorns, but the historical ones can be found occasionally.

Ainsty used to do a dome tent, and Crooked Dice do one https://crooked-dice.co.uk/products/dome-tent?_pos=2&_sid=16292220b&_ss=r (https://crooked-dice.co.uk/products/dome-tent?_pos=2&_sid=16292220b&_ss=r)

They also do an expedition tent (early design).
I used the Renedra ones for TWD:AOW:

The Debris of War Command Tent could be used for a Scouts/Guide/TA tent.

Anyscale Models do a very reasonably priced set of modern tents for a fiver.

Earlier this year, I bought some very reasonably priced MDF terrain from a member at the gaming club. He had assembled it but not painted it.
Today, I got around to painting up the TT Combat MDF RV. It's a huge vehicle and really looks the part. I am pretty happy with the result and that "camping roof" on the side can be pulled out :).
Andrea, from Mantic Games AOWTWD is a fitting choice to model the scale of this vehicle.
-
That's a great RV! I passed on buying it as I was afraid it would look too "blocky" being MDF. It looks wonderful, though... :-*

Very nice.
I like the branding.

Thank you very much Mike!
I personally like MDF a lot. When I bought my first building it was enough to just stick it together. But with a little bit of work, you can make even "blocky" MDF models look nice enough that you're happy to put them on the gaming table :).
We are, most likely, starting out Last Days campaign properly in the next couple of weeks, so this will come in VERY handy then lol. Probably as an escape vehicle when my base is being overrun lol.

Yep - that’s turned out well; very well.

;)
Heh, 'camping roof' indeed - it's an awning!
Lovely job though - I had similar concerns about the blockiness too but it looks ok here.

Today, I did most of the work on the Project Z Compound I bought earlier this year. It was assembled but unpainted so I slapped some on. I probably won't bother painting the doors in the inside but will put up some barbed wire at the top, there are convenient holes to thread it through.
If I had built the model myself I would've done the painting in another way, yellow on black is NEVER turning out well :?! It'll do for my uses though.
-
Nice multi-level building!

Cheers Mike! Another very useful piece of terrain for the zombie apocalypse.
With that nearly done, I have only got that helicopter model left to do before ALL my PA terrain is done (for now ;).

As you implied, is it ever truly done? I was in a model train shop yesterday and saw they had a box of three Plasticville trailers on sale. I'm like, "I don't have any Plasticville trailers. And these would look different than my other ones..."
So, I bought them! lol

Nice secure compound.

Made an attempt at modelling some concertina wire on the compensation walls. I'm glad I bought 20 metres (60ft) of the jewellery wire because I only got a little bit left over! :o
It'll do.
-
Yeah - those thin, solid panels as fences just aren't really working for me - I can imagine solid concrete wall panels but they'd have to be thicker; I can imagine chain link/ metal mesh panels of that thickness but these as they are aren't what I'd use. I found some very useful printed plastic fences (they look like metal mesh panels) on ebay that I'm going to base up and use as perimeter fencing for my post apoc games (once I've damaged a few of them).
-
Thank you very much sir! It's the Warlord Project Z model I bought off another club member for £35. Well worth the money and I now aim to finally finish off that helicopter model I have in a box.

Legionnaire.

Exactly Mike! I'm very happy I managed to finish the bits I had planned ahead of time. But just as I sat back and relaxed, a fellow club member said: "I have these bits that would do you very well for that zombie apocalypse project. The value is about £80 but I'll let you have it for £35" how could I turn down that offer lol!
With the helipad done I now have an incentive to finally finish that helicopter model I have in a box, the crew will probably, if painted up, just be used as casualties...

Are those panels solid?
In my set (Sarissa branded) the panels are folded over grey board (so double thickness).

Looking at your blog, it looks like my set is the same. I bought it from a club member who had assembled it but I put some paint jn it and added my first ever attempt at making some concertina wire.

The concertina wire looks good, I was more replying to Rick about the thickness of the panels.
I assume the concrete panels are not fortress grade, but just a couple of inches thick so about a millimeter at this scale.
