On 19th september 1827 James Bowie, became embroiled in a duel which became known as the Sandbar incident. On a riverbank outside Natchez, Mississippi he was shot twice, (through the lung and thigh) sustained seven stab wounds including a sword thrust through the hand and received a heavy blow to the head from the butt of a dueling pistol. He defended himself with a large knife reportedly given to him by his brother, killing one of his opponents with a thrust through the heart.
This episode sealed his notoriety and gave birth to a legend.

I keep resisting but you make it harder everyday ,damn it o_o (ive only ever said that to women before :o)
-
:-*
Beatiful!
-
Malamute;
Great looking figures. Finally a figure worthy of depicting my long deceased relative... Colonel William B. Travis. Well done!!
Regards,
Hitman

-
They are full of character. Some lovely detailing going on there - well done Mr Bickley.
Really like the chap in spectacles.
-
Outstanding! :-* They are all excellent but Travis is a work of art 8)
-
Indeed, stunning work. Definitely will be ordering some of these. :D
-
Woah! Superb character in those. Lovely work (and good choice of sculptor there, Nick ;))
There's something in those Bickley genes, obviously...
-
Great stuff.
-
Excellent miniatures. They capture the spirit of that time. Very realistic look.
Have you read Larry Mc Murtrys Dead Mans Walk and Comanche Moon... ? You should would inspire you even more.
Cheers
Björn
-
Wow! Nice suprise after waking up and seeing these lovely sculpts.
Congrats to Matthew and yourself on these miniatures.

Yes I've read Dead mans Walk, a great book. Most inspiring for the early Texas Rangers with skirmishes against Apaches and Commanches.
Now Commanches - there's a thought.... ;)
-
Those are lovely sculpts and I'm very tempted by them.
But is it possible for you to sell the dismounted minis separately. These are very usefull to bulk up the ranks of my Texian army and I would need several Daniels, Amos, Mials .... . But I don't need the mounted ones (or at least not so many of them).
Also, how is the scale compared to the Artizan Texians?
-
Utterly, totally amazing :-* As soon as my wallet has recovered from the rigours of the festive season, you can definately expect an order.
-
Bloody class!
-
Great looking stuff! I'll be getting some of these at some point (not entirely sure whn tha'll be though Nick - I've still got most of the last lot to paint up o_o !)
-
Very nice. Lots of characterful sculpts. 8)
btw Happy Birthday Nick. :D
-
Absolutely beautiful stuff, Mal:)
-Doc
-
Very, very, very nice. They are a lesson in 'characterful' sculpting. 8)
-
I hate you, I hate you, I hate you… that is until my financial situation improve.... then I will buy some figures! ;)
Real nice figures. BTW, that’s a very smart move to provide both a mounted and dismounted version of the same figures. 8)
-
Wow. Great looking sculpts. I don't think I can resist this range any longer...
-

Well, they must be on his mom's side then... ;)
-
fantastic Nick, love Mial Scurlock sculpt!
-
Another set of wonderful releases for your miniature range Malamute! :-*
Darkoath
-
Well, they must be on his mom's side then... ;)
Yeah, that or they skipped a generation :D :D

Due to the way these are set up to be cast I can't sell the character figures separately.
There will however be some packs of rank and file Texians figures comprising just dismounted troops in a variety of poses and clothes, plus speciality sets like the New Orleans Greys and Alabama Red Rovers.
Work starts shortly on the bulk of the Mexian troops, so expect to see those within the next couple of months. The Texian infantry packs will be later in the year
They fit perfectly with the Artizan Alamo range. Here is a comparison shot:

Lovely sculpts again, Nick. I will certainly need a full set once they become available. :D
-
@Malamute
Thats great news
And they look indeed great next to Artizans
Thanks
-
Top notch.
-
Oh, that's gone and torn it. I've been wavering these last few months, but now I'm catching the distinctive scent of a New Project. Might as well just go and write a bloody cheque payable to the Malamute Mortgage Fund right now then... ;)
Beautiful figures Nick. :)

:D
I thought the grizzled Sgt figure would fit in nicely with your Seminole project. ;)
-
Hmmm, I'm tempted, an alamo army for Black Powder.......
-
Now Commanches - there's a thought.... ;)
Commanches. Now there would be a range I'd happily dive straight into. I've been waiting forever and a day for the conquest mounted figures. ::)
-
:-*
Great figures.
Alas, :'( I have enough Gringos. But when the Mexican Army starts being available in the March-April Time line...
Oh, I need... okay, want... vaqueros.
Gracias,
Glenn
-
Lovely , lovely figures
dodge
-
These are great! :-* :-*
-
Really , really nice. I haven't seen Old West figs this good since the Foundry mounted and dismounted figs. The horses looks a little rough, but I'm sure they paint up well.
-
these are definitely on must have. I enjoy "Personality Sets" like this as it lets you have a role-playing adventurer and a mounted general. Thank you very much.
-
Some lovely looking figures there.
Luckily Glynis hasn't seen this thread yet - she has the Hudson & Allen Alamo model (full layout, chapel, walls, long barracks & other buildings, it's about 6' x 4') but no Alamo figures, so I get to use it for colonial (Indian Mutiny or Boxer) and Alasdair has used it for LoTR.
-
They look amazing. Great sculps.
I prefer the figures standing as the thought of painting horses terrifies me.
-
Must resist the temptation, and stay on 15mm Colonials, but your making it tough!
I love Gutshot in 28mm, with character heavy figs like these!
-
Lovely stuff Malamute, this is turning into the definitive Early Texas range. 8)
Excellent miniatures. They capture the spirit of that time. Very realistic look.
Have you read Larry Mc Murtrys Dead Mans Walk and Comanche Moon... ? You should would inspire you even more.

Björn
Hey chaps, in case any of you have missed them both the above McMurtry classics are available on DVD.
Re Comanches, if you don't have Fehrenbach's book on them (I read it about 1980, and recently bought a very reasonably priced paperback copy from Amazon), I'd highly recommend it. :)
-
:o
Now I am distracted again! I thought I had forgotten about the old west!
These figures are awesome.
Unique and well sculpted.
Do you have any plans to sell these in the US?
Matt

Matt I will ship these anywhere in the world :D
I am not using a US distributor, but you can order via the website and I will happily send them to you, I have sent quite a few to the States so far.

I love these figs and will probably end up getting them no matter what, but I am not really an "Alamo" gamer. What else could they be used for? I suppose the Flintlock pistols rule them out for The American Civil War. It's interesting cause the dress is definitely 19th century but the weapons seem more 18th century to me.

The Texas War of Independence is not just centred around the Alamo which does tend to over shadow other less well known parts of the war. There are skirmishes a plenty, between cavalry in woods, around creek crossings etc, several set piece battles, raids for livestock and plunder etc. It has much scope for small games with a few figures and hero type characters.
You have on one side a brightly coloured army based upon Napoleonic styles matched against a rag tag army dressed in a mixture of Dickensian town clothes and Backwoodsman buckskins - Davy Crockett coonskin caps or top hats!
You can alternatively use the Texians as early Texas rangers defending homesteads etc from marauding Commanche/Apaches or Mexican bandits. The 1830/40's saw the first percussion cap rifles and soon the six shooter. I would suspect though many older flintlocks were still used right up to and after the ACW, where people couldn't afford new guns and trusted old faithful weapons.
I think there are plenty of opportunities to play these along Old West style games, but with a difference - no six shooters, so you have to be a bit more careful how you play, no more blazing away thinking I have another five left in the gun ;)
-
good, I will not make too many comments. it's just full of little details I like. (but hey, if Mr. Malamute could stop reading my mind ... that he is telepathic, in addition to beautiful miniatures) lol
-
This is stunning stuff Mal! Must be strong, must be strong..........
-
I don't play Old West and I probably never will but I have to say that this range is up there with the very best. Congratulations, M!

I'm pretty sure you can buy sprues of western small-arms, so chopping away the flintlock and adding a colt etc would be an easy conversion.
After all, if I have to buy them, then so should everyone else ;)
Well, my next order was going to be mounted Presidiales, but looking at these, I really don't know which ones now :(
-
I'm sure that single-shot pistols were used in the ACW, especially by the confederates (lack of supply and all that) - so you could get away with a few. If you'd rather have them as single-shot caplock pistols, then it wouldn't be hard to cut away the striker for the flintlock.
And there are a couple of Old West weapons sprues available (Conquest do one, as do Iron wind Metals) so can always replace the 'easy to get to' ones with 6-shooters?
-

Have both ;) :D

Have both ;) :D
I had an eerie premonition you would say that lol

Arrgh, just when I thought to be save from buying those beauties comes this cunning marketing statement from you, Malamute, widening the historical possibilities right into my gaming area. Gosh, seems to be a must-have then ... ;D

Eerie is no surprise when you are dealing with the master (small m) of darkness (small d) ;)

Excellent news, have missed painting this era but at least im up to date with painting your stuff.

Have you thought about trying to turn Phil Collins on to your range? This guy has wargamer potential written all over him! We should convert him to the dark side...

Yes I was aware he was an Alamo fan, having seen photos of him at the Alamo on another forum.
That thread on the TMP got me wondering how to get in touch with him about how he "needs" to buy some Boot Hill figures :)
-
Sure--we can convince him that he needs to do it at 1:1 scale!
-
has anybody compared these with the cannon fodder miniatures?
I'm just wondering how they would measure up.
-
I have - and they are a pretty good match (the same with Artizan). I'll get a couple of size-comparison shots up in a couple of hours...
-
Update...
I should have the new lead castings in the next 24 hours, and will have them on the webshop at the weekend. ;D
As Xander has suggested they are fine alongside Artizan and Cannon Fodder, although the Cannon Fodder Mexican infantry are quite short.
A Comparison shot will be much appreciated.

Right, I've got those comparison shots that I mentioned. Whilst I was at it, I also took some comparisons with Foundry & Artizan figures (Nick, feel free to steal any of these if you want to use them for the website). My appologies for the lack of scenic basing & the WiP figures, but I just grabbed what I had to hand on my desk...

Well done Xander, the comparison shots are great. Thanks for posting it. The figures are coming along nicely too. :)
-
Thanks for that very helpful.
I think I can safely buy all 3 manufacturers.
-
The figures are coming along nicely too. :)
Cheers Nick! I must admitt, your new releases really fired up my interest in the period again (I knew they would!) and I've only recently re-started painting them. The aim is to use the lure of new shineys to get most of my backlog finished before giving in to the urge to buy more!
-
My painting dont really do Nicks stuff justice but here is a couple of the range.

Great stuff Tim. :-*
Nice to see your Veramendi Palace seeing some action too :)
-
Tim, those figures look very nice, however....
.... not wanting to be critical here, but have you considered trying to use the natural light coming from behind or slightly to one side of the camera? The figures would look even better and all the detail would be clearer. Also, think of using a plain white or sky blue etc background to enhance the clarity. Setting the figures in front of the building is a good idea, but try and put them on a bit of sandy coloured terrain or piece of cloth and this combined with the right lighting source would turn that into a great pic.
The Presidiales and Texians are far more important than the mug and I bet they will look fantastic with better lighting ;)
Not trying to be critical, I just love seeing well painted pics in a well-lit pic :D
-
Quite agree Glutenous, im not good at taking pictures so a mate took them on her phone and it was a bit of a rush job too. Will try to get some proper ones taken somehow as i like to see decent ones myself. Thanks for the tips though, very usefull and much appreciated thanks.

Blimey! Those phone cameras are getting very good :o I never usually bother with mine, but I'll certainly try it at the next wargames show I go to.
Look forward to seeing your figures in all their glory :D
-
Ok,I now have the castings in stock and ready for shipping :D
All orders gratefully received ;)
-
Order placed :D
-
Same here Nick !
-
11 packs ordered. I have to say you're a bastard Nick as I was only planning on buying "1 or 2" sample packs, but I realized I couldn't decide on which ones and had to have all of the Texians. But then I realized there was no one for them to fight and had to buy all the Presidials and some Mexican Officers too. I wasn't planning on getting into this period, but can't resist 19th century "personalities."
I'm curious what draws a Brit to the Texas War of Independence? Phil Collins has basically devoted his life to The Alamo too. I guess it just surprises me a bit, that's all.
And what else has Matt sculpted? His style looks familiar to me? Did he do some of the Conquest minis stuff?
Looking forward to the Mexican Soldiers--please post greens soon!

You can thank Disney's Davy Crockett followed by John Wayne for my obsession with the period. :)
;)

He hasnt worked for Conquest, but has produced some stunning figures for Reaper Miniatures amongst others :)

Hopefully the end of feb/beginning of march

Same here Nick !
Muchas Gracias Amigos :D

Beers are on Malamute on the 27th! :)

One day, maybe.... ;)

Mexican Infantry in FEB/MAR time frame? Good. I am looking forward to that.
Gracias,

-
Nick, when you get to doing those resin buildings, don't forget to do some set in Spanish California - mission, presidio, etc. ;)
-
Figures came today, same excellent standard! Great sculpts and very animated with lots of character. Got to be my favourite range now. :-*
-

Sam Houston on a rearing horse, funnily enough I was discussing him the other day with Timg. You will be pleased to hear he is on the list to be done later this year.
As to positng photos you have two choices:
Either become a supporting memeber, then you will have your own gallery hear that you can post the photos in or sign up to an online photo gallery like Photobucket etc.
From where you can copy and paste the Imgae code of the photo into your thread here.
Alternatively email me the photos and I'll post them for you, I could also post them on the Boot Hill website. :)
-
This list intrigues me Nick. Houston will be good!

The list seems to be forever growing. lol
I've just replied to your comment on the Steve Dean Forum about different versions of Crockett and also my desire for a "Crocketts Tennesseans" pack based on the Beekeeper, Thimblerig, The Parson and the guy with bucked teeth and an eye patch from John Waynes Movie.
-
Anyone want to buy a kidney? :D Im not complaining, sounds good to me. Looking forward to a spot of painting again tonight, Bowies turn i think.

I have to say I'd like to see a version of Crockett in "gentleman's attire."
BTW: I have found a new use for the Texian figs--War of 1812 Militia! They are basically perfect for them and also for Kentucky Rifles officers and such.
-
Yeah when you think about it axabrax these figures can be used for so much more your quite right. Mountain men skirmishes, US/Mexican war, exploration games as well as the ones you mentioned. Glad you shifted my eyes away from Texas for a minute mate!
-
I got my figures from Nick this monring - excellent service once again (4 days from ordering to arival, and one of those was a Aunday!). I'm pleased to be able to say that the figures are absolutely smashing, maybe even better than the previous releases!
@timg & axabrax: I must admitt, the wide range of game types available was part of the appeal for me - there are also the late 1850's border skirmishes along the Missouri/Kansas border, especially so if you chuck a couple of the Foundry Bushackers & Jayhawkers.
-
Thats a good idea about the border wars.
-
I gotta get Sam Houston. He used to run around on some property I have on the Illinois River.
I always like to think he fished on the same spot that I do.
The Cherokees called him "Big Drunk". :D
GREAT figures! :)
-
Must be great to live there Smokey where he wandered around! I'm looking forward to Houston too, just know he will be awesome. :-*
-
Just received mine today and they are even better looking in person than on the pictures :-*
Great job, Nick :D

Received in the US this evening. The figs are gems and show a thoughtfulness, creativity, and attention to detail that rivals the best figure ranges out there. Very talented sculpting.
One small point of constructive criticism: after a quick dry run I am finding that many of the mounted figs do not easily sit on the horses without big spaces between their butts and the saddles.
Otherwise, Boothill has my vote for best figure range of the year so far!

Steve, I've had similar issues - I found that filing down the straps at the front of the saddle makes it much easier to get figures to 'sit' properly & removes the need to fill....

VERY nice! When are the Mexican Army figures due out?
-
Due out soon i believe, be worth the wait doubtless.

Hi,
Just wanted to know if Texas adventures packs 3,4,5,6 are ready yet ?I ordered them but they weren't in my order when I got it. My suggestion for the Mexican peon carring a piglet come from the idea that peons don't have a lot of cash so to pay taxes this one is paying with a pig.I hope you sell a lot so you can come out with a lot more.

I'd be careful about posting your vital stats straight to the forum. Web crawlers can find that kind of stuff and nab it for nefarious purposes.
-
yeah dude might want to take that down and repost it directly to him.

Hi.
I have PM'd you to discuss off the forum and replied to your email from the Boot Hill Website.
I have checked your order, it did not include the new codes Mex12 - Mex 15. Your order was for packs Mex 1- Mex 11 (except Mex4)
Lets discuss this off the board via email.

Are the Mexican Infantrymen still on track for March?
I have a payday tomorrow but unless the date has sped up to this week I have some "other" stuff to buy. I just wondered if you can give a "ball park" estimate of arrival so I can stop buying other stuff one or two paychecks in advance...
Gracias,
Glenn

Ok, Matt says they will be ready for collection on 6th march... (how Appropriate ;))
They will be sent straight to the casters after that weekend so should be available in the webstore about two weeks later around the 20th march.
But of course anything can happen between now and then and this is not set in stone. ;)

Roger that but it gives mea planning date to be ready if all goes as projected. If there are delays then I can decide about how to deal with purchases.

Any chance of a preview before then?
