Title: New Model Daleks
Post by: Steve F on 07 June 2010, 09:21:13 PM
It seems that these will be pacakaged with the next issue of Doctor Who Adventures, No 170, due out on Thursday 10 June:

Fingers crossed that they'll be of a useable size!

That has to be worth a look doesn't it.  Like you said hope its a usable size, though i might buy them anyway :D

Certainly worth a punt if they're the right size.

Those Daleks have definitely got the hump!

Still not 100% on the new redesign but as you say worth a go...

The old ones released with the magazine were a little larger than the micro-universe ones, less detailed but passable, these look ok, off to the Mark VI golf paint shop then for their hot hatch colours!

:D

Think I prefer the dayglo orange they come in already!  ;D

Wonder if Black Tree have the Peter Cushing Dr Who mini in stock...?

So what would be the ideal size for these. 30mm to the top? They look to contain enought detail for a good paint job.

The last free DALEKS from that mag were pretty good but a bit soft on details...I did this with them:

I just couldn't face painting all those little blobs  :o .

The old ones released with the magazine were a little larger than the micro-universe ones ...

They were also used in a boardgame, and I see from Forbidden Planet International's list of upcoming Doctor Who merch that there are a couple of new boardgames due out soon - maybe they'll have these new economy hatchback Daleks as playing pieces?

Well the new designs are taller than the old:

Probably end up buying them, and will resist the urge to jump up and down on them.

I don't mind the new design, although the back does seem a bit odd. I really disliked the Power Ranger like set-up of the new ones though! I've never really felt the need to game Dr Who....... but cheap Daleks......

hardly free, certainly not cheap... the magazine is £2.99... so would you pay £3 for that or take your chance with a BTD order... :?

It does say squad, so you would hope that the mag comes with at least 3. lets just hope that they are about 32mm high.

I'm hoping for 5 as the advert suggests- can't really justify buying the magazine for less.

Fair do's, but you know what I mean. If they are of reasonable quality, and a decent size they'd be worth the price to me. Certainly worth popping into the newsagents for a recce.

Also this.

ok... so I bought an issue...

right... they look crap, but that's because they look exactly like the iDalek and that looks crap... there are 5... but of the 5 only 1 had the two halves aligned correctly, and it's taken me 20 minutes to pop the other 4 apart so I can try and glue them straight...

they are big, obviously... but eyeline wise match the Heresy Nerdlord... I have taken photos but for some reason my ftp client is buggering about...

Anyone that can come up with a spare issue and figures (and can take paypal) lemme know, I'm one of the few that can abide the new designs!
I'm in the U.S.

Edit: Thanks for the tremendous outpouring of generosity! Our man Blackstone got me the new style Dalek hookup!!!

I got a set as well  - at 44p per figure, that's not bad, and mine are luckily not as misaligned as feared. Also, I don't feel bad trashing the magazine instantly. God, for BBC tie-in merchandise, that is really horribly poor.

Still strugling if I shall paint them as iDaleks (which would be interesting since it would make each one instantly identifiable), or a more "classic" metallic scheme to make them more generic.

To be fair the mag is aimed at kids! The odd useful pic in there I thought, for the reference file. i'm tempted to paint the iDaleks in actual Power Ranger colours.  >:D

Haha that sounds familiar - my dear old mum used to dread storytime as I'd always point to a large dusty old tome full of sauropods, therapods and mammal like reptiles...

Ramphoryncus was my fave but I still have trouble with pachycephalosaurus! Now in the process of brainwashing my 2 year old lad with both Who and dinos!  >:D

On the topic of the Daleks - got the wife to keep her eyes peeled as she's bobbed out to the shops...

Minimal alignment problems over here. Not exactly high art but before today I didn't have any Dalek miniatures and now I do, for the price of a pint. That's a win in my book.

Yeah, fair cop, guv.  lol

I've gotta agree with Chris though, I know the mag is aimed at kids, but by god its rubbish. Do kids who are presumably already fans of the show need it pointed out to them that the Silurians have "green scaly skin like a lizard"? Really? Really? Why not tell us how the general got her scar, or if the different size crests denote different ages or castes, something a fairly bright child wouldn't have already worked out for themselves.

Lazy, tie-in rubbish, BBC, hang your heads in shame.  :-[

Then do some more useful free gifts, please.   :D

At the risk of incurring the wrath of Who fan-dom, I actually don't mind the new Daleks.   ::)

They're not the best Daleks ever but they're fine. My main beef with the Victory of the Daleks story was that there was just too much to fit into 45 minutes - it was bursting with ideas, but just horribly compressed. I reckon that next season we won't even notice the different design...

Anyway, I just picked up a couple of sets of these. Better than expected, and Auton has shown they're much improved with a little paint. £4.40 for 10 Daleks - can't say fairer than that!

I bought 5 as well (I wanted to jump on the band wagon ;) )...to be honest, I'm really not that pleased with them myself.  They have really big bodies and not very big heads and they look bottom heavy :( .  I suppose these will get painted the same as the last lot of comic-freebies (they'll end up as security robots).  I suppose that the minis are good if you like the new shape though (only one of mine was mis-aligned).

Definitely worth the £2-20 I paid for the mag.

So after failing to find them in Cambridge I checked my local Tescos and lo and behold - tons of the buggers. I figure 10 daleks should be enough to have a pretty decent game using them (and if needs be I have a shedload of slightly older ones I could bulk the force out with).

Pretty impressed with them and if your struggling to find them, check out your local Tescos.

I was hoping to be the first to get a set of these painted and on the forum. One of our kids has a subscription to the mag, and this is probabbly the first frre gift worth stealing - did anybody see the cybermen last year? Shocking!
I didn't have any issue with miss-alignment. All the figures were really good and paint up fine. Only reason they're not finished was a lack of orange paint and going blind from painting Dalek "bumps". I'll post up soon with a finished set and comparison pics with the Harlequin/Black Tree daleks.
Title: Re: New Model Daleks

So I had vowed not to bother with these, but then I saw auton's paintjob...  We were shopping in the village Co-op yesterday morning and I happened to see three copies of the mag and what do you know, they all slipped into the shopping basket  ;D

Didn't think they were too bad - lacking in detail, and a bit of flash, but they cleaned up easily.  In fact, all mine were misaligned, but with a new blade in the craft knife I popped them open, cleaned up the flash and had them back together again within an hour.  They seem to be styrene, so plastic cement works fine on them.

Two were missing eye stalks - Space Marine bolter scopes did the job nicely.

And only two big gashes in my fingertips, which isn't too bad for me...  :'(

Fifteen figures for £6.60 - can't complain.

Of course, that's on top of 20 Micro-Universe Daleks, and 12 of the M&S keychain minis from a few years back  :D

Here's my "free" Daleks so far. Still to do the highlights and bumps on the blue Dalek and finish off the bases and some final tidying (why do my figures always look okay until i take a photo!?!). Although these look bigger than the 28mm Daleks I have they look better when mounted on 2p coins rather than a slotta base. They are supposed to be a lot bigger anyway...

tesco's have loads still... just popped into the one on Newmarket Road in Cambridge, and easily 10 issues sitting there... well I say 10... at that point... was a bit lower after that point... around 7 issues maybe... I blame you lot personally...

I have never known a child make so much noise as the one from whose hand I prized my third copy...  My 14-year-old son said he was glad he wasn't with me when I went to the till in Smiths, then went back to painting his Tyranids.

WH Smiths for a start, that's where I got mine. £2.20 is the cover price.

Nice work with the paint jobs!

Just got 3 set of these in the mail today.  Debating what the color ratios should be.  I was planning on one Supreme, but not sure about the Strategists, Scientists and Eternals.  Having multiples of some of those may make sense.  Just not sure how unique some of these roles are because we don't have much to go on from the show yet.

How are you all dividing up your new Dalek armies?

Cheers Carrma, it's a shame the drones are red. Bronze would have been appealing. I guess I'll go for a white, blue, yellow, orange and shedloads of red then.

Double shame, as white with bronze/gold details would have been nostalgic.

Red as the drone color is a bit of a shame because in the films and the last series, red was reserved for the higher ranks.  So there is no consistent color coding.  That said, a squad of red Daleks led by a white one could look pretty cool on the game board.

I think TheMightyFlip is right--as it is a weekly mag, back issues disappear quickly.  I'm in the states and ordered mine through www.galaxy4.co.uk.  It was a little pricy due to shipping, but it is one of the few online retail places I could find that sells individual issues.  I didn't see issue 170 listed on the site, but you might try emailing them, if no one on the board here has extras.  Otherwise you might have luck on ebay.

Risking accusations of threadomancy....

Here's my yellow Dalek.  Mostly just to say a massive thanks to Twrchtrwyth for sending them to me in the first place!

Hoping to finish off the other four in the next few days (with another five in reserve, ready to make up the numbers when we know more about the way they will operate).... also hoping that they don't make loads of yellow Daleks in the next series! ( I find yellow a pain to paint :) )

Cheers!
