This project was originally posted on the Danish forum Powerfist, but by request I am putting it here and translating to English, so more people can follow what I am up to.
The project is for the Horisont III (http://sites.google.com/site/horisontesbjerg/) convention in November.
Tusk is a fun simulation of mammoth hunting during the late Stone Age.
Each player represents the leader of a hunting faction within a tribe, and as such will control spear- and bow-armed hunters, hunting dogs, and those mysterious individuals who have harnessed flame - the Firemakers.
The game game will be set up for 2-4 players.
-
The first thing I did is markers for burned earth:
Cardboard with gravel.
Basdecoated with Gesso.
base colours.
Done.
With caveman for scale.
I will probably glue some grass turf onto the unburned ground on the markers, but as they are now they are easy to package and transport.
Coming up next is the fire markers.
-
The fire:
Washers for bases.
Aquarium cotton wool.
With caveman for scale.
Sprayed black.
And left to dry the night over.
-
(http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae132/jonasfrickmann/Tusk/Tusk-015.jpg)
Firemarkers with some filler on.
Again left to dry over night.
-
(http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae132/jonasfrickmann/Tusk/Tusk-018.jpg)
Painted yellow.
A little darker yellow/orange added.
Dark orange added.
With a caveman for scale.
Done. There will need to be a bit of gravel added here and there where the washers are visible.
Maybe the fire is a bit over the top, but I think it will work ok.
-
(http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae132/jonasfrickmann/Tusk/Tusk-022.jpg)
When a caveman sets the groun on fire a cardboard marker and a fire marker is placed and if the fire goes out, the fire marker is removed and the cardboard marker is left, to show that the same place can't be burned again.
-
Working on the models:
Copplestone cavemen.
Fenryll mammoth.
A bit of base colours.
More to come.
-
Very cool! :-*

Sorry thats immediately what I thought when I heard TUSK!
And yes a good cup of unobtainium works wonders for one's nerves.
-
Very Nice!
Copplestone had a sale on their cavemen last month, so I picked them up, have some toy mammoths and planning to build up a set.
Very nice ground fire tokens. I'll have to try something similar!
I also converted a couple of the cavemen to hold burning brands, similar to what's shown here, so there would be some fire-makers.
-
Yeah, I also took advantage of the Caveman sale, I think the models are great, I look forward to painting them up.
-
Fire markers look great.. :)
-
I have not been able to make much progress. Because my wife and I have just moved to a new place, there has not been so much time and money that I would have liked to use on the project.
But I have been painting on my cavemen, when time permitted, but I don't have any pictures right now.
Here is a picture of a couple more mammoths.
Four DeeZee mammoths, which I was able to buy from Spirit Games.
-
Looking good! I MUST get there this year - I hope we'll not get snowstorms in November this year, again!
-
Even though there was a snowstorm, people had been driving from Copenhagen and still made it, so snowstorm is no excuse ;)
-
Even though there was a snowstorm, people had been driving from Copenhagen and still made it, so snowstorm is no excuse ;)
As far as I remember, the snow wasn't quite so bad on the north of Funen, so the motorway across the island up there may have been fairly passable. Not so the roads where I live.
I didn't want to risk the family dropship, although it bothered me to stay home, and the trains are hopeless around here when we have just a heavy dew...
-
Very interesting period to game. Like what you have done so far. Really like your fire markers. Thanks for sharing.
-
Really like your fire markers. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, the Aquarium Cotton is new to me - nicer material to work with than steel wool, I'd say? :)
-
Jonas, I'll have you down as one of the most original and creative game makers on this board. There are others, to be sure, but combining off-beat ideas with skilful execution and actual deploy is special. I say this because I feel I am lacking in some of these aspects.
-
Brilliant stuff, loving the fire markers, they look terrific. Can't wait to see this finished and some photos of the game in progress ;D

I second this. I wish I could be as innovative and, especially, productive as some of the honoured members are. Maybe when I retire in some 20 years, or so... lol

Thank you very much. I did not invent the fire markers though, I stole the idea from Thorbjørn, who stole the idea from this guy: http://elladan.de/021%20Fire%20and%20Smoke/021.htm (http://elladan.de/021%20Fire%20and%20Smoke/021.htm).
Then I used some wrong materials along the way, but basically I used that guide and gave them my own touch.
What I have coming up next is of course the miniatures and I am also going to do some measuring sticks.
Later I will be making the actual board and some terrain, but I don't have the material for that at the moment and no money to buy them, so that will have to wait a bit.
-
This is, by far, one of the more impressive game efforts I have seen for a while. Thank you for sharing!
-
Thanks. I will hopefully update very soon... I have recieved the last Cavemen I need (some Copplestone barbarians from Em4), they just need to be modified a bit, metal knives removed and some belt buckles greenstuffed with fur.
So next update should include either some painted models or my work on cavemanify the barbarians :D
-
I have a little bit of progress. I recieved some Em4 Copplestone barbarians, which fit in size and looks with the Copplestone cavemen I have.
They need to have a few changes made, some knives, belt buckles and a chain needed removal. It is not so easy to see the changes on the pictures, but I think the result ended up ok.
Before: Copplestone caveman and 4 Em4 Copplestone barbarians.

After from the front.

After from the back.

-
Yes, his groin is now much furrier... lol
-
Very old school LAF, this... I like it a lot.
-
Great work, something I hadnt thoguht of as a way to expand my cavemen. I used ancient germans in the past but this gives some good ideas too :-*
-
Em4 has 4 barbarians with bows which I used, there is pictures of 3 of them on their homepage. They also have a fifth barbarian with bow, but he is wearing a helmet, that was a bit too much work for my taste.
Also Mirliton has some of the same barbarians, they carry a package with 5 barbarians with bows og which 4 are the same as the Em4 ones, but the package include a fifth, which should be useable, and it is not available from Em4 at the moment.
They fit perfectly with the Copplestone cavemen as he did these barbarians too.
-
Now that I have aquired all the cavemen I need, I have taken some photos to document my progress.
They are all in different states of WIP, some only needs the bases done, others need almost everything done.
Now I only need to recieve the last 4 mammoths and 4 dogs before I have all the models I need.
Some Og (The Heroes).

Archers.
Some mixed cavemen which I will not need for this project.
-
Looks fantasic Jonas, I like the black war/hunting paint particularly.
-
Looking good.
Looks like everything is coming along nicely.
Can't wait to see everything together on the table.
-
Here is the documentation of my latest progress:

Side angle.
I hoped I would have the Primaeval design mammoths by now too, but even though I ordered almost two months ago from Magister Militum, I still have not recieved anything and very poor communication through email.
Hopefully the last four mammoths will arrive in time or else I am screwed.
-
I love this project.
Can't wait to see the mammoths painted. Still looking for some nice ones myself.
-
We are having a playtest this saturday, so hopefully I have them painted by then.
-
:o :o Somehow I missed this thread before...what a cool idea...as an archaeologist I have spent way too much time thinking about what its must have been like to hunt these animals...I'm very interested to here how the game goes.
Cheers,
Blue
-
How cool is this? :D More pictures please.
-
More pictures will follow, probably after the weekend. Maybe before if I get busy the next couple of days :)
-
Jonas: Awesome project. Very inspiring. I love the body painting on the hunters.
Looking good! I MUST get there this year - I hope we'll not get snowstorms in November this year, again!
Do you have snowstorms in Denmark? Really? ;)
-
Here is the documentation of my latest progress:
Player handouts and measuring sticks.
Your sticks are waaaaay too well cut. Branches rough cut to length would fit in with this project. tool marks on the wood would make them ping. Beautiful build and I cannot wait to see the Mammoths.
Snitchy sends.
-
Yes, you are right about the sticks, but I bought these with the idea that I had something to write on them, but as it turned out, that will not be needed.
I have painted them now though, with the lenghts of 2" and 5".
Maybe I will make some new at some point, but right now for playtesting these will do :)
Mammoths might get peint today, the first 5 are assembled, greenstuffed and basecoated last night.
I wanted to base them before painting, but since I have not recieved the Primaeval mammoths from Magister Militum, I can't base them yet, I want to be sure I can base them the same way all of them.
-

You have more free time than is good for you lol

Mammoths with painted fur.

Finished mammoths just missing the bases.
Cavemen bases wip.
I will do the bases for the mammoths after I have recieved the last 4, so I can be sure to make some bases which will fit all the mammoths.
Battle report will follow later today.
-
Excellent! :-*
-
What s great thread! I'm really enjoying watching this project progress.
-
Here is the result of our first playtest:
The peaceful mammoth herd walking along.
A dog gets trampled.
Another dog loses it's life.
The first hero throws himself into combat... and dies...
The mammoths decide to walk down to the other end of the table and we all agree that it had been a wrong decision to deploy both hunting parties in the same end of the table.
A spearman dies.
A bowman is impaled.
The other hero misjudges his abilities and dies horribly.
A cavewoman with a stoneaxe kills the first (and last) mammoth.
The other bowman dies.
A mammoth avenges his fallen comrade and tramples the cavewoman.
A fire maker starts a fire which scares off the last mammoths.
I think the playtest was ok. The rules are working ok, but they might get some house rule edits at a later point. For example dogs are almost useless and has more chance to get themselves killed than to scare a mammoth, but maybe that is just realistic.
But one thing can be concluded, if there is only two players they should not deploy both hunting parties ind the same end of the table. The mammoths got scared away from the players and ran to the other end of the table. Had there been a hunting party in each end, they could have scared them more back and forth instead.
I don't think there will be any problems with 4 players. Then the hunters will surround the mammoths and scare them into the middle of the table and make them trample the cavemen and such fun.
-
Looks great!
-
Epic! I wish I could join in!
-
First off, greatly themed and well executed project. Stone/Ice Age is a "period" close to my heart.
However, anyone who's engaged a modern elephant in fisty cuffs would tell you that it's not the best of ideas - if such person had survived it. So I think, if your scenario is not about killing the mammoth hunters, they would fare better, when they had some kind of trap at hand. Different parties could try to drive the beasts into their pitfall or whatever, while at the same time preventing the mammoths from trampling into another tribe's ones. Just a thought. Wish you success anyway!
-
Yes, pits traps are actually part of the rules, so I might make some.
My guinea pigs.. eh I mean friends who playtested, suggested for me to make the players control the mammoths and hunt cavemen, hahaha
-
It's great when a project comes together.
Maybe more terrain to drive the mammoths into.
That's were pits could come in to play.
-
At first I was somewhat sceptic to the the whole idea as a gaming concept, even though I really appreciated your effort and the commendable way of executing the whole idea, from concept to finished game with miniatures, rules and terrain. However, after having read the last pages (since my last comment) I am now really impressed and would have loved to test it out! :)
-
While I still wait for the mammoths from Magister Militum I am trying out alternative ideas, in case they never show up.
-
Your last photo.
Big laugh at that,
so funny. lol
-
What a fantastic project for further inspiration one should perhaps read and for that matter watch Quest for Fire by JH Rosny. I have been thinking of taking the toy Mammoth made by the German company Schleich and using it for a fantasy Dwarven snow army with the a scratch built attached Howdah - see http://www.schleich-s.com/en/action_figures/collectables/product_range/world_of_history/prehistoric_animals/prehistoric_mammals/index.html
note it is tad larger methinks than the pachyderms shown here.
A great game would be to have Homo Sapiens versus Neanderthals. The Planet of the Apemen recently shown on BBC which has some excellent ideas for these type of possible altercations.
See also Tusk by irregular miniatures http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/indexes/miscindex.htm
also Steve Barber Models http://www.sbarber-models.clara.net/main.html.
-
The Sleich mammoths looks good, but are too large in scale to be realistic for 28mm, but I think it will work great for a war mammoth in Fantasy style games, if I remember correctly I did stumple upon some Sleich and Bully mammoths made into mammoths with howda. Bully is another company making plastic toys, their mammoths are great too, but also too large.
Irregular miniatures is where I have the rules from, but their miniatures are in 6mm and 15mm scale, which is a bit less apealing to me than 28mm, so when I saw others play Tusk in 28mm I decided to go that way too.
The Steve Barber cavemen are great, but the mammoths are hilariously ugly, but I do want to get one at some point, just for the laughs.
-
Now you're having me pondering about getting the TUSK rules... >:D
I love Copplestones bararians and cavemen..... so maybe i should... and I don't mind fantasy mammoths, so I could use the toy ones (already have one).... hmmm.... not that I NEED another project..... ::)
-
Back on track:
Today I recieved my package of trees from China. To my horror I saw that the box was completely cruched. But it looks like the contents have survived, there is a couple of trees which have bent a little, but it is ok. Also I would not have the time to wait one more month to get new ones.
This is how the box looked before I opened it.
And from the side.
The trees were packed in 4 bags of 20 pieces (3 bags in the photo).
A Russian VSF man has sneaked off for a mammoth hunt.
This image shows the size of the trees.
It is not the best looking trees I have seen, but they were cheap, aproximately £20 for 80 trees, and that price included postage.
I will mount the trees individually on washers and maybe later I will make some forest area markers which I can put a couple of trees on to show where the forest start and end (For games which need that sort of precission in the terrain).
-
First batch of trees ready.
Washers with tape.
20 trees.
I mount the trees on the washers with my new hot glue gun.
Sand added.
And 20 finished trees.
I have the next batch of 20 standing ready for sanding.
-
A hot glue gun, the wargamers best friend! It's just so useful for a lot of things!
Great progress on your project eager to see the finished board or set-up!
-
I don't know what I will do with the board itself, I have a problem getting the last things I need to finish it, due to lack of transportation and money.
But somehow it will be done before Horisont :)
-
A hot glue gun, the wargamers best friend! It's just so useful for a lot of things!
Hear, hear !
-
This is so good. :-*
-
Finally it seems that I am getting my last mammoths, I just got an email today that they have been sent, so hopefully I have some good updates next week.
-
Really like this project, having some of the cavemen myself I picked up a few of these mammoths at my local A C Moore they are a bit bigger that the one you are using and at pretty nice (made out of the hard rubber type toy animal stuff, but the were on sale an only $5 a piece I think I might get some more.
http://www.shopatron.com/products/productdetail/Carnegie+Collectibles+Woolly+Mammoth/part_number=404201/740.0.1.1.33307.70684.70683.0.0?pp=12&
-
A little bit more of the same:
20 moore trees done!
40 trees in a box.
I think I have enough now, but maybe I will do the last 40 too, if I get bored.
-
One more piece of terrain.
This is how I recieved it this morning.
Basecoat of gesso.
Base colouers added.
Done.
Done from the other side.
Caveman with grass turf.
Stone cirkel and trees.
A mammoth prowls around in the dark.
I am not 100% sure about how much I like the grass turfs. It looks ok on the stone cirkel, but I don't know if it is too big for the caveman base, so I have not glued it in place there yet.
-
One more piece of terrain.
Is that a single-piece resin casting?
I like the tufts, been meaning to get some myself to try out on bases and scenery. In fact, I like the whole project, the mammoth herd is, well, mammoth! (the thought of a caveman-squashing game where the players run the mammoths instead of the cavemen also amuses me!)
-
Yes, it is a single piece resin cast. It was really easy to prepare, all I had to do was to wash it and then paint it, no flash or anything.
I bought it on ebay. A bit expensive, but I saved a lot on the lousy trees and had some cash in my paypal.
I don't think it is historical correct to have a stone circle like this in the stoneage, but I quite like the look of it and it will be usefull for all sorts of future projects.
The grass tufts are easy to use, but I would have liked some a little smaller, which I think would be better on bases, but this size is fine on terrain and larger bases.
I bought the grass for my VSF models, but they are based on 20mm washers and these tufts would fill almost all of the bases.
-
So what's that hairy bloke doing, setting the table for ten?
-
Just posing for the size comparison comity :)

I don't think it is historical correct to have a stone circle like this in the stoneage, but I quite like the look of it and it will be usefull for all sorts of future projects.
I don't recall this properly, but I THINK I've read that most of the 'standing stones' found in Europe are from the Bronze Age - but that a lot of large stone monuments (like Newggrange in Ireland - don't lynch me if I'm wrong, here) are actually from the Stone Age. A stone circle, no matter its historical accuracy, is always a nice table piece, though.
The grass tufts are easy to use, but I would have liked some a little smaller, which I think would be better on bases, but this size is fine on terrain and larger bases.
I would use smaller ones for 'infantry' minis, perhaps with a bit of fine flock in patches, too. I have not taken the plunge into using those li'l bastards, yet, though.
-
Anyway, I doubt the Copplestone cavemen are historic either, I see them more as movie style cavemen, like you see in the 60s and 70s prehistoric movies.
So this might be a caveman mammoth huhnt, but probably with lot of fantasy elements. The goal is not to be 100% historical corrrect, it is to have a fun and good looking game with a theme taken from human prehistory.

Of course. Fun and the right cinematic mood is everything! :)

Finally I got my last mammoths:
Fenryll, DeeZee 1, DeeZee 2, Primaeval 1, Primaeval 2.
From the side, with a dead Primaeval mammoth.
Washed and ready to be glued.
And then I realized that I had run out of glue, and I have no place, near were I live, where I am able to buy my favourite brand of glue.
Sigh.
-
You don't think, the mammoths were numerous enough as it was (as per the results of the test game)? lol
-
What a cracking herd this will turn out to be. My cave men are destined for e-bay but I almost recanted when following this thread :-*
-

Nah, hahaha, well I don't know, I would like to play test with 4 players or with 2 players in each side of the table and not in the same side, as it was the cavemen had a hard time to catch up and only reached the mammoths one at a time, I think it would work if more cavemen was closer to the mammoths, after all that would make more possible cavemen attacks pr mammoth attack.
Time will tell ;D

Well, I shall be there to be squashed under the heel of a mammoth or two. If I get the job I'm after, I may even be there semi-officially to do market research :D
-
Sounds good :)
-
Hallo everybody, here is a little update. I have been laying low for some time as I had to concentrate on preparing a Berlin gig with my band. But hopefully I will get back on track soon again.
Mammoths prepared for painting
(http://i965.photobucket.com/albums/ae132/jonasfrickmann/Tusk/Tusk-078.jpg)
Basecoated.
A back of custom dice I ordered for the game.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, mammoth!
Actually I did finish the new mammoths too, one night when I couldn't sleep. But it looks like I didn't take any pictures of the finished models yet.
-
Nice touch with the custom dice.
-
I am going to hand some out, for those brave enough to face the mammoths :D
-
Well, my admittance fee should tick in today or tomorrow. Am anticipatng this game along with all th eother stuff!
-
Yeah, hopefully I will be ready, my budget to finish this project is a big round zero kroner. But I would think I can pull it off, after all I have most done already.
-
Looking forward to seeing the whole herd painted up.
Cool idea with the custom dice.
-
4 players works well,it did at colours ,we ran about 10 games per day ,with up to 4-5 players at a time, ages 4+ ,dont worry about where the players start from, as the first player to hit the herd they will spread where they will, just make sure that they start from the table edge.I made the players have only 12 points to pick from.[4 og`s ??]and changed the rules so archers get a +1 per archer that targets the same mammoth[3 archers same mammoth 10+each ,4 archers 9+ each] as we found that no one ever pick archers after a while
the custom dice look lovely ,i wish i thought of them and your herd is as big as mine [what no baby mammoths?]
have a fun time on the tundra
........ :D and remember dogs can`t claim kills
-
As I don't have that many cavemen yet I have premade the hunting parties. 1 Ogg, 2 closecombat cavemen, 1 archer, 1 firemaker and 1 dog. Maybe I will let players choose their own hunting parties, when I get more cavemen.
I have been wanting to get the baby mammoths, but apperently they are not available at the moment, I don't know how you got your hands on yours?
-
ok, time is passing and I still have some left to be done...
So doing the pit traps, I really don't have any good material to do this, so it is going to be a trial.
I start with a cardboard base.
Glue on some strips of other cardboard and fill with a hot glue gun.
Glue on some sand.
Size comparison with mammoth and caveman.
Tomorrow I will have to do some gardening to get some sticks. I will cut these sticks into shape, glue them inside the pit trap and then paint.
I hope this will work, if not I am screwed...
Maybe some tweaking must be done for the final pit traps, this will work as a proto type.
-
Looks OK so far.
If I were to hunt large mammals (in real life), I think I'd go for broader pits (to ensure the beasts not going around them) - but from a gaming perspective, that one looks great. I don't know the rules in question, but do the mammoths have to actually touch the trap to fall in, or will there be a chance of entrapment, as soon as they are within a certain distance?
Where does one get those TUSK! rules? :)
Ah, here: http://www.wargamevault.com/product_info.php?products_id=64533
-
The mammoths have to touch the trap, actually they will only do so if they panic, in normal movement or flight they will avoid the trap, so use some fire to make them panic flight into the pits.
-
OK - just purchased and printed the rules - wil give them a read-through.
-
Looks good so far, I suppose you could use that and give an impression of a pit through putting foliage over the top with a painted black hole if you see what I mean
-
...or take a hammer and chisel and carve a big hole in the table. (I have many more good advice like that. :) )
-
I have been wanting to get the baby mammoths, but apperently they are not available at the moment, I don't know how you got your hands on yours?
[/quote]
i got mine from DAZED MINIATURES but they were withdrawn from sale in 2009
they may look cute but they have the highest body count of all the mammoths!
nice pit traps by the way ,they look fab and they are not even finished yet. I use resin ones from somewhere that have been in my lead mountain for ages
when we ran the game we played it that pit traps were covered until some thing fell in [wholly rhinos, big cats, mammoths other cavemen tribes!]
its because you don`t got the [PF] panic flight result much, and if you get [F] flight or [W] withdrawn it will just walk round it. Also if a archer is on the right side of a trap and fires a arrow at the mammoth and gets the attack reaction. BINGO!!
which is good when ALL you have left in a tribe is one arrow boy
-
It will end out something like this:
I will paint the bottom of the pit black.
But this is only proto type, I think I will make the final pits a bit wider and not so square.
Too bad I can't get the baby mammoths, but they do look like the ones coming out on Primaeval Designs at some point. There is some pics on their facebook page. Hopefully I will get them sometime.
-
Pretty thick poles now I look at it, but I don't really have anything else, I must wait and see what it looks like once it is painted.
-
I think they look fine mate, too thin and you wont readily get the idea of waht you are portraying :D
-
I have six such pits in resin - just dug them out - they are only 4x7/7½ cm, though. If they are big enough, I could give them a quick repaint and bring them for the event? Giving you time to focus on other aspects for now.
(I painted them ghastly goblin green with red poles back in the 80's -Yes, intended for use with the first boxed edition of Warhamster.)
-
Thanks for the offer, but I think I will just carry on with creating homemade pits, at the moment I don't think there is much else I can begin to work on anyway.
I got a bit sidetracked by some rogue trader marines, since I wanted some more than just one pit to basecoat, hehehe....
I will probably create some more pits tonight and paint them tomorrow.
Still pleeeeeeeeeeeeenty of time lol
-
I decided to make the pit traps a bit larger and I decided to make six and while I was at it I began a bit more burned earth markers, if it is not enough I will have to do more before next convention.
Materials.
Glue and cardbox added. (Lot of glue).
Todays work.
Tomorrow I will give the sand a thinned down glue wash, to secure the sand, then add the pikes and basecoat the bunch.
Maybe I will have time to paint it too, but if not I will do that in the weekend.
-
Tomorrow I will give the sand a thinned down glue wash, to secure the sand,
That's exactly how I seal sand on my tables and terrain before painting, too :)
If you need a hand slapping paint on, I'll be in Esbjerg from Friday evening (at about 18:00).
Now, I'll wait until after Horisont to decide whether to get Mark Copplestone's cavemen, but after reading the rules, I have a strong feeling that this game is fast and fun - perfect for luring some more people away from GW-gaming only. lol
I'll bring my copy of the rules, too, btw - I'm exited to get to try this out!
-
Plenty of time left, still a week to go :D
-
If you would like another mammoth I think I still have some stock of my mammoth stored away somewhere!
-
I have thought about that one too. I'll send you a pm.
-
I have a strong feeling that this game is fast and fun
yes....and every game will be different :D
-
Continuing with the pit traps.
Spikes glued in.
Basecoat.
And six pit traps done! I didn't take any photos of the finished burned earth markers, they are just the same as those I did earlier in the blog.
The mammoth herd, I don't think I got a picture of the complete herd before.
Sidetracked by Hermann the cat.
I have aquired two more DeeZee mammoths, so I will not be using the Fenryll one, since it just don't look good with the others. I need to paint them, but it is fairly fast to do.
And I am waiting for a shipment of laser cut bases for the mammoths, hopefully they will arrive in time.
-
That cat must think it has a friend in that beard of yours. :)
-
Lovely Herd of Mammoth and the pit traps look great

Usually it is one of our guineapigs who tries to hide in my beard, the cat is not that interested in the beard ;D
Lovely Herd of Mammoth and the pit traps look great
Thanks.
-
5 days and counting... 8)
-
Yeah and only minor things left to be done... It will be great :D
-
Have a great time, Jonas.
Been lurking on your thread since the beginning and I must say that this is a super project.
You've done a great job! :-*
-
unfortunately I won't manage to have the boards ready, it is a problem with money and transportation (to get the material I need), so it will be a brown cloth over the tables for this time.
But hoepfully all the painted mammoths and cavemen will make up for it...
-
This has been a fantastic project to follow, great fun.
Good luck at Horisont III. :)
-
Thanks, hopefully I will have lot of in game pics to show after the weekend.
-
Yes, I've been following this thread with great interest to. It is an unusual idea brilliantly executed.
-
Oh, I think it is not so unusual, but maybe here on LAF... you should try the lost world safari or cavewars yahoo groups, there is plenty of mammoths, cavemen, dinosaurs and the like :D
-
I just can't believe how many different minis manufacturers make mammoths. :D
-
Oh, I haven't listed all manufactures in the blog, there is even more out there...
-
Doing the final preperations.
Mammoth kill markers, to hand out to the players instead of the actual mammoths.

Two more DeeZee mammoths.
11 mammoths :o
I am waiting on bases for the mammoths, they were sent to me, from UK, on saturday, so hopefully they will arrive here tomorrow or friday at latest. If not I will have to game with no mammoth bases this time.
The final things I need to do now is; the mammoth bases of course, paint the last caveman bases (I am half done) and I need to paint some more on the torches.
Next is going to Esbjerg and hunt!
-
11 mammoths :o
Lovely. I hope that they walk along trunk to tail like the elephants in The Jungle Book.
-
Mammoth kill markers, to hand out to the players instead of the actual mammoths.
WOT?! No trophies?? lol
Am counting the hours 'til I can get in the car and drive off into the sunset....
-
Lovely. I hope that they walk along trunk to tail like the elephants in The Jungle Book.
They just might, I just wish I had some of those DeeZee baby mammoths too... they should be re-released by Primaeval Designs any day now, but too late for this hunt.
-

I think it was agreed at the playtest, that it was a bad idea to hand out the mammoths to the player, once they killed them, since it would be hard to resist banging them around, stomping whatever...
:D
I do have one dead mammoth miniature though, but it is still unpainted.
-
Eleven mammoths!
We expect lots of good photos from this epic (indeed, mammoth)(sorry...) game, you know.
Can't wait to see pics of what it all looks like laid out to play. Wish I could get around the world to see it in person...
-
I'll be bringing my camera, for sure... If I don't forget in the last minute of frantical packing stuff into the trunk... lol Happened before... ::)
-
I will be bringing my camera, to take as many pics as I remember... Often I forget to take photos in the heat of the battle...
The postman just arrived and he had no mammoth bases for me today either... hopefully they will be here tomorrow.... If so I will be in a hurry to glue, sand and paint, but with the help from my radiator, it should be possible... I really hope they get here, the game will look so much better with the mammoths based.
-
Terrible news, the mammoth bases did not make it in time. I orderes them on the 14th and they were sent from UK the 19th. It should have been in time for delivery, but the mailman only brought me things which were sent from UK the 21st.
Sometimes I think the postal service hate me.
-
Well, they seem to stand quite well on their own? Maybe you can use them as is for now? Would be a shame to miss the game tomorrow... :?
-
I will use them as they are and paint the bases in some brown colours. It is mainly a matter of looks.
Nothing will be cancelled, so don't worry about that :D
-
Good to hear!
-
Also measuring will be a little harder, but hopefully people will be like me and accept aproximately measures.
-

11 mammoths :o
Looking at the pic I think the Fenryll mammoth you got from me is the least attractive sculpt in the lot.
-
What you do have to do however is get a sloth and a sabre toothed cat and some meercat thingies just for the giggles ;) lol
-

i`ve taken my herd to three big shows so far and have not had any breakages yet with handing the "kill" to the player [some young as 3] BUT the tokens are a VERY good idea
sorry about the bases not making it ,im sure it will be alright on the night,i always do movement from the top of the mammoths head anyway ,and with the two inch kill zone around makes measuring "about that" anyway
i just found out ive got pride of place at our show, ground floor as you walk in ..no pressure then
keep it fast and fun, smile, enjoy yourself ........laters

Good call - how are things in Tring going these days?

Yes, I thought it was good looking untill I got the others, so now it is not allowed to play with the others anymore. But I am still happy we made the trade, it helped me to get going in the beginning of the project and I will probably introduce the wooly rhino at some point.
What you do have to do however is get a sloth and a sabre toothed cat and some meercat thingies just for the giggles ;) lol
Yes, I might do that, giant sloth :D

I just got back from Horisont today, I managed to show 1 game at friday evening, when we arrived, and I ran 5 games on saturday, the last one with very late night "prison rules", which included weremammoth, hollow earth escapes, dogs mating, cavemen using bows and torches as clubs, teleports and probably more.... some of my friends are terrible people :D
The show went great, all who perticipated seemed to be having a great time and we all played in a very friendly manner, so we had no major problems and solved all minor problems with a laugh.
I took a few pics which I will be uploading tomorrow, today I need to relax and rest my eyes a bit.
.....
Oh, and of course I got a text message, from my wife, on saturday, telling me the bases had arravied ::)
-
Congratulations on getting the bases lol
Looking forward to the pictures.

Those late-night/last day games & conversations where everyone is punchy, tired and making absurd play suggestions are the greatest.
Looking forward to the photos and further game reports - did any other LAF members get into one of the games?
-
I took in-action pics of the not-quite-so late game Saturday evening (won by Ogg), too - haven't emptied the camera, yet, but I'll do during the week and post some here and on my blog.
I think the game works like a dream for cavemen - and as somebody pointed out, if playing with firearms (Victorians), you probably need to put a lot of terrain on the table to break up LOS.
I purchased the rules a week ago I'll be looking into getting some mammoths (which is a thing I thougt I'd NEVER do), slowly building up a small herd. And then, of course, some cavemen - but I think, I'll just use my old Grenadier/Copplestone barbarians for starters, and do some 'fantasy' hunts for Schleich dinos and such.
-
Good call - how are things in Tring going these days?
Hello Mate, I left there around this time last year back up in the North east. I think however that the club is under threat or rather the venue is ::) developers!

While I will admit that the spoken language of the time might be short on adjectives and such, could you translate the cave mens guttural sounds into a short story on how the hunt went? ;)
-
Yeah, I can tell a bit about the event.
The pictures are a mix from all the games, so I can't make a story connected directly.
The first game, the single one on friday, made me a bit nervous about the fire. I made 36 burnt earth markers, which I was pretty sure would be more than enough, but the players set so much fire and it spread wildly, so I ran out of counters. I thought I would be lacking in markers for the rest of Horisont, but luckily I found out that in the rest of the games 36 counters really were more than enough. But still I am going to make one more batch of counters, just to make sure for future games.
All games went fine, a bit slow in the beginning, but with lot of action as soon as the cavemen closed in.
The pit traps found use in all games, killing between one and three mammoths pr game. No one felt remorse for whiping out an entire species.
I think a total of three mammoths survived the six games by fleeing off the table.
All games during saturday went on with mammoths trampling cavemen, but the cavemen always triumphing in the end.
The last game on saturday turned out to be the wildest. We started out around midnight and by then people were getting strange ideas (maybe because of the beer and no sleep).
Only nine mammoths joined this game, I don't know why since we used ten for all the other games.
The players generally played strange, by accidentally moving eachothers models, moving too much, moving out of turn and such. We decided that it was late night prison rules, I have no idea where the name came from.
At some point a mammoth ran off the table and the closest caveman wanted to claim it as a kill, I said it had ran away and survived, but the player argued that there were a long way from the table top to the floor, so it would learly be dead from the fall. From here everything became a bit more strange as I told him it had found a way to the hollow earth and as such was walking on the backside of the table top. His cavemen then proceeded to follow the mammoth in the hollow earth (getting himself killed).
The result of the game was two kills for each players, so a multi draw and of course we could not let it end like that, so we decided to let the cavemen kill eachother off, the dogs were allowed to bite, the cavemen with tourches used them as clubs and the bowmen could shoot and use the bows as clubs.
After some time each player had one model left and it slowed down with bowmen fleeing and shooting and so forth, so I revived a weremammoth which prceeded to kill the players off.
In the end all players somehow thought they have won, one had most human kills, one killed the last mammoth, one had the last caveman standing and the last was probably just megalomaniac or such.
So total chaos and fun for all :D
-
Great looking game, all the hard work you have put in has paid off :)
