I have normally only been putting my figures up in the "what did you paint this month?" threads, but it seems like most folks just put them in their respective forums. So here y'go.
All my figures are converted Mage Knight figures. Which is to say I snap off the horrible figure and replace it with a metal mini (or in some rare cases clean the original figure with acetone and repaint it)
I'm actually pretty satisfied with this fellow. Came out the best to date, I think.
This is a slight conversion of an Andreas Ithandir (Here's the pre-paint shot showing the conversion (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/FramFramson/Tal_Dreen_00.jpg))
-
That is one cool looking miniature you converted and painted. Great! Are you actually playing Mage Knight (coming to think about it, stupid question. Why else would you put it on that base)?
-
Well, I play when I can. Can't say as there are as many Mage Knight players as they're used to be, but it's a simple enough game (we used to call it Warhammer for Dummies) and I have a large enough collection to provide multiple armies in any faction.
-
Nice hamhanded paintbrush mashing - love the face 8)
-
If there's one thing I've learned, it's that a good face distracts from a multitude of other painting errors. lol
-
Next figure in the pipe: A conversion of a Willy-Miniatures blood bowl/elfball figure (http://willy-miniatures.blogspot.ca/2012/04/sara-8.html) for use in conventional fantasy.

That shoulder plate is the first thing I've ever really fully sculpted in green stuff!
-
Nice conversion!
-
Despite the disclaimer it looks like you have a deft touch with the paint brush & with the conversion work. WELL DONE!
-
That shoulder plate is the first thing I've ever really fully sculpted in green stuff!
An excellent start, then. Here's to much more!
-
Thanks guys. :D
It's funny. I was searching for the right sort of figure to use as a replacement for an existing Barbarian/Amazon warrior, but even though there must be thousands of such figures, I could never find one that had the look of the figures in the original game. Finally one comes along that's at least close enough to convert and it's a football figure of all things!
-
All done.
-
And here's a group shot of that particular warband
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/FramFramson/MKD_Group.jpg)
From left to right: Slightly converted Reaper (Depora Azinrae), Mage Knight strip-and-repaint (Magus Draconum), Converted Willy-Miniature (Sara), Andreas (Ithandir), and a homebrew chopped-and-rebuilt Mage Knight strip-and-repaint (made from several figures).
-
Wow! :-* I must say sir those look fantastic!
-
I think this is one of my all-time favourite miniatures. Been sitting on it for almost ten years before feeling comfortable enough to paint him.
-
Looking good there both on the conversions and the repaints. As much as i hated MK when it first came out. And would not even look over the line and called it an abomination the line does have some nice figs that do come in handy.
Of this lot i am liking the Geddion Longblade proxy best of all. A GW High Elf. Is it a straight model or a conversion? I really do like the paint scheme. It is nice and crisp and colorful. Really nice execution on the model. Keep up the good work and post more when you can. :-)

VERY NICE MASHING! The Pointy Eared One's cloak is stunning. Despite the self deprecation all your pieces are BEAUTIFUL. I especially like The Babes.
-
Thank you. :D
@Grimmnar: The High Elf is not a conversion. He was the games day giveaway figure back in 2001 or 2000. I picked him up a year or two later after seeing him in a painting/showcase sidebar in the catalogue. I just love the pose, the kit, everything about it.
I have some closer pictures of some figures I painted before these. The pictures (and the paintjobs) are not as good, but far be it from me not to troll for cheap compliments lol

Nice conversions.Love the shoulder pads.

Nice painting Fram. :-*
You've got some really nice looking miniatures. :o
-
That Aragorn model is one of my favourites of the GW LotR range. And it goes well with the color you've chosen. Where is the last model, the druid/sorceress from? It's a cute figure and nicely painted.
-
Thanks guys.
That's a red-box-miniatures mini, "Myrianna of Aelfheim".
-
Thank you. :D

I love this model I think I have 3 of them now! (I have no clue why I picked up soo many..)
Tell me more of your Jonas Freeborn!
-
Janos was a conversion made from several different Mage Knight figures and a bit of greenstuff.
The main problem is that he's a bit big in scale (though thankfully he's still shorter than the humans/elves) and his arms are a bit oversized. Mage Knight dwarves are like Blizzard/WoW Dwarves: they're pretty big, and basically just look like incredibly stocky 4-foot tall humans. So it kind of works.
But if Scibor ever makes a Dwarf Sniper Rogue I totally fall in love with, I might replace that figure. Especially if he's equipped with a blunderbuss. lol
-
If and when that occurs I will gladly take him from you!

Fram,
It is this mini right?

You could do what I did an convert the kneeling 40k Ratling sniper.

That is indeed the one!

Not quite the look I had in mind. The fellow I made is actually perfect other than his being a bit too large (and having arms that are a bit too big). I have more of the same head/torso combinations, so maybe in future I will try the same mod again if I can find some dwarf-ish arms holding a blunderbuss or rifle which fit the head & torso without being quite so oversized.
-
New fella. Got a lot of elves to convert.
Those older-style bases are gonna be a problem. Much harder to turn them without manhandling the figure.
-
New fella. Got a lot of elves to convert.
LOL Fram, i knew you had this fig around somewhere waiting on paint. :-) I picked this one up at a HMGS Flea Market table for a nice fee. Like him a lot. Hate the axe shaft though. Needs to be turned around. But that is the shortcomings of the sculpt not your paint job.
As for your paint job i do like it a lot. Very straightforward. Very crisp and clean. It is not the usual bright colors of a High Elf but not dark. Not sure how to explain that comment. Its like the colors are muted a bit.
I am loving the shield design. The horizontal diamonds. Are they freehand or stencil? :-)
Grimm
-
And he's not the only other elf I have either... ;)
The diamond check was freehand. Just a weird idea I got when trying to figure out what to do with the shield. I didn't want to do a freehand design, because I didn't want to detract from the carved crest, but leaving it plain was bugging me. I think maybe a different geometric design would have been better, but I haven't done much freehand. Baby steps, baby steps!
-
Some new guys. These are three out of four brothers who were all promo figures. Out of the four, two had really crap stats. One of those was a free giveaway so I have him, but the other awful one was a super-hard-to-find rare promo, so I never bothered to complete the foursome. The other two (the mage and the archer with the brown cloak) are actually so-so-decent figures though.
That mage is by the Perry brothers. It's such a great figure.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who likes subdued tones on my elves. Great work. The archer is a real sweet mini!
-
The archers are GW Shadow Warriors and the mage is the Elf Mage for Mordheim. Correct?
Glad to see I'm not the only one who likes subdued tones on my elves. Great work. The archer is a real sweet mini!
You aren't Faust. I do like them as well. I do though like proper colors for proper elves. I do tend to like bright colors for High Elves, and muted dark colors for my Dark Elves and woodland colors for the Wood Elves. :-) But there are always exceptions to the rule.
Grimm
-
That's correct!
I painted some other shadow warriors early on, as a replacement for an elite archer unit. I didn't post these photos because this was literally the first time I ever used ink washes:

I also have a genuine update as I finished this fellow last night, a conversion of a Phoenix Guard Standard-Bearer. He's more in the "bright" vein, given my particularly garish choice of colours:
I have more elf dorks I could convert, but I think I'm going to switch to something else for a bit. Not sure what's next.
-
This is really a very cool thread. I like your elves. Might I suggest one little thing? I've noticed you drybrushed e.g. the gloves of the shadow worriors. Nothing against that but I usually then put a very watery glaze carefully on top of that to smooth out the rough finish of a drybrush. That's just my personal taste, mind you and in no way the final word in painting.
Apart from that I really like both you choice subdued of color and the more shiny approach on the hero minature. Keep on posting, it's really nice to see how this project continues.
-
The blue-garbed shadow warriors are actually an older paintjob. Drybrushing gloves is not something I do anymore, as can be seen in my more recent guys. I've got a pretty good generic middle-brown leather recipe which serves me pretty well now (Snakebite Leather, followed by a heavy wash of Ogryn Flesh, and a light highlighting with a Snakebite Leather + Vomit Brown mix), which you can see on the much more recently-painted red/brown-garbed shadow warriors.
-
God, I love this figure so much. He took paint very well too... it was the easiest paint job I've had in a while (Certainly easier than trying not to screw up elf women faces).
-
Great PJ. I love the dark tones, I think they really suit the figure. Nice to see him painted up btw.
John
-
That's an Old Favorite...it's one of Citadel's most enjoyable minis to paint. You did a SPLENDID job bringing the Old Boy to life...love the striped trousers. VERY WELL DONE!
-
A classic with a paint job to match 8)
-
Always nice to see Hrothyogg. Such an iconic model.
-
Classic!
-
Thanks for the compliments folks!
For a bit I thought maybe I'd try some different ideas (like a copper gutplate with verdigris), but I really liked the "conventional" paintjob with red gutplate and stripey "Obelix" trousers too much. The colour combinations really work well and look great on that particular mini.
-
That ogres a definite classic!
Lovely paint job! :-*
-
It'd be hard to give him more justice that you have here! One of my favorites from your collection. I lucked out on a casting of him myself this year in a random ebay lot. Slowly but surely assembling a deadly team of Goodwin ogres.
-
My fellow's the leader for a bunch of Bob Olley trolls. :D
-
Finally painted something again. These photos are kind of crap though.

I can identify with photos that don't show off the minis to advantage. Despite that, the Warrior Babes look TERRIFIC...EXCELLENT brushwork, especially their expressive faces. I usually tend to be a basing fanatic, but I rather like the game piece style you use. It's like the Gods of War have placed their Heroes on bases to more easily manipulate their lives. VERY WELL DONE!
By the way, who makes the Babes?
-
Thanks!
The first one is a promotional figure from Hell Dorado (La Voyaguese, 1635 edition), the second one is a Privateer Press Warmachine mercenary figure (Alexia Ciannor, the Witchfire).
All of my figures are actually figure swaps for an old game called Mage Knight (the original tabletop game, not the recent boardgame), that use a clix dial for all stats. Mage Knight was more of a conventional wargame though (you use a regular gaming table, rather than a grid like Heroclix). Hence the funny-looking bases.
-
Tried to take a page out of Captain Blood's book for this fellow (i.e. he's quite bright and colourful by my standards, intentionally so).

Nice work Fram :-*
-
Thanks!
-
I really like the light blue stripe effect you have going on the barding.
-
You did a FINE job with the vibrant colors. Keep up the EXCELLENT WORK!
-
Nice work, Fram.
A fantastic concept with wonderful execution.
:-* :-* :-*
In fact, I have admired this thread for a while, coming back a few times and not commented on it.
How remiss of me.
Consider me chastised.
-
I have to admit I was starting to wonder if I was doing anything wrong!
No worries, no harm, no foul. Thanks for all the kind words folks! :D
-
Great work on the face! I like how you mash things with your brush. :D
-
One of the little tricks I learned over the years is to make sure the figure is always looking somewhere in particular... as opposed to staring vacantly off into space as I normally do myself. ;D
-
Picked up this surgeon/assistant pair, many years ago.
I used the surgeon to replace an ugly generic vampire cleric, who is the top healer for my game's "not-Vampire-Counts" faction, but had no suitable figure to use for the skeletal flunky. I decided to make a custom figure (dial & stats), which I do from time to time, naming him Baldric. :D
These were very fun figures to paint. I really like the way they turned out.
-
VERY COOL...an Elvin Stylist & a Skeletal Caterer! I really enjoy your choice of minis & painting style; each new post is an event. GREAT WORK!
-
a Skeletal Caterer!
This is more appropriate than you think!
I wanted to paint the cauldron contents with something different than the usual "bucket o' blood" or "Mysterious bright green/blue/purple brew", so I decided to just paint some natural but ambiguous colours, with a golden yellow centre fading to a reddish brown rim (glossed over afterwards). It doesn't show in the photos, but after I finished painting, everybody here said that it looked like he's got a pot full of crème brulée. lol
-
Please tell me you have works in progress shots of your creation!
-
Er. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but.... >__>
-
Er. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but.... >__>
I may have to require that you build another one! ;)
-
Wait... you mean a how-to for how I make my custom Mage Knight dials? I thought you meant WIP shots of my painting that skeleton figure. I didn't sculpt any of these myself, if that's what you meant!
-
Ahh I thought you may have created your skeleton pot holder!
-
Haha! I wish I was that talented!
-
Here's the fellow who was so unceremoniously dropped yesterday (this is post-repair).
-
I am delighted to see he survived the fall...I drop my minis so often I consider it a rite of passage. He is a WONDERFULLY ornate character with an equally wonderfully expressive face. OUTSTANDING WORK!
-
I was very lucky that the face survived the fall. All that armour's good for something after all, eh? lol
-
Awesome armor! Glad to hear it absorbed the damage! That's some wonderful variations in the metal colors.

I re-replaced a figure I had already replaced. ;D

-
The Babe turned out BEAUTIFULLY! You did a truly SPLENDID job on her face....definitely more an upgrade than a replacement. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks DeafNala, that was definitely one of the faces I'm happier with.
The face on the previous incarnation turned out really nice face too , so the pressure was on to get this one right! I did save the old one though, swapping her out to use as a different hero.
If anyone's interested this was the Ax Faction Raen of Rannoch, with a conversion job to give her a less ridiculous sword.
-
Just finished reading through the whole thread. WOW!
I particularly like the female warrior on rearing horse from the last page. It seems rare to find a fully clothed mounted female in an at-battle pose. I may have to keep my eye out for that figure.
-
Well, just FYI, she did have one of those silly boob windows, but I converted it a bit and painted it over.
-
There's some really nice face work going on in this thread Fram (among other interesting things). Well done!
-
I loved this mini as soon as I saw it and snapped one up right away (a good thing too, because CMON is already out of stock for now). It's just a little oversized for me, but his fine features means he just looks like a fairly tall fellow, so he works fine.
Very fiddly to paint, but I'm quite happy with the result.

Looks great. Very relaxed and sure of himself. Nice model, nice painting.
-
Well, just FYI, she did have one of those silly boob windows, but I converted it a bit and painted it over.
They have to breath, don't you know?! lol
-
This is one of those minis that cry out for background fluff & hint at what that might entail. The face is WONDERFUL; like his posture, it defines his personality...GREAT brushwork! VERY WELL DONE!
-
I think you can be very pleased with yourself for that Fram. What range is it from as I don't recogise it?
-
Thanks fellows! He's the recently-released "Gallant Knight" from CMON.
The backstory (from long ago) for the Mage Knight figure I'm using him for, had the character as an adventurer sworn to service to some dragonfolk, now roaming the land to help those in need.
He was a bit more of a cheerful fellow in the fiction that came out to support the sets he was in, but the figure is a bit more stoic so that's the way I wound up painting him. I tried to bridge that by giving him a brighter, more colourful costume. So perhaps this is "a serious moment", but he's not grim. Either way, the relaxed confidence is perfect for a warrior trained by powerful magical (dragon) warrior monks.
-
Thanks, it really is a lovely mini.
-
I mentioned that he's out of stock already, but given that this was the first listing, I suspect CMON will probably have a restock soon.
-
That IS a sweet mini! Your thread is very inspiring!

Thanks Ninja! :D

I'm sure that there are geekier things than a sci-fi samurai elf chick wargaming figure... but I sure can't think of any right now.
I really tried to push myself further with this one. Partially because it's such a cool figure, but also because it was a special issue sold to raise money for Jim Ludwig of Dark Sword Miniatures, after his newborn daughter died suddenly.
I even hand-painted the gilt base markings (in Mage Knight, LE tournament prize figures had gilt lettering rather than regular white. This was a custom figure, but I felt like being cheeky). ;D
I also found out that the new best place to take photos in my apartment is up on a high shelf in my room in a particular spot.
-
Wow, that cloak! :o
Both sides look amazing.
-
You reached a new level in brushmanship...I like the way that sounds. The cloak is FANTASTIC & her face is LOVELY. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Very very nice work there Mr Framson!! Love it.
-
Many thanks too all three of you! :D
If anyone's interested, the cloak medallion is sort of based on the star medallion of Japan's Order of the Sacred Treasure: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_the_Sacred_Treasure mainly because I thought it looked really great.
I simplified it a little so that it would be easier for me to paint.

Whew! It's been a while since I did anything with this lot! Back to fantasy land for a bit.
A particularly bright sort of orky hero. The backstory we came up for him long ago was that he'd been zapped by a sinister wizard, (hence the strange growths and terrible scars), but used his wits to come out on top. Later, his empty eye-socket is used to house an anti-magic gewgaw - insurance against other such sorcerous attacks.
He's actually a converted chaos-y Conan figure from CMON, using a GW ungor head (which make magnificent non-trapjaw'd orc heads once you shave the horns off).
-
Ungor head is awesome. Perfect.
-
Very nice wood work and I like the fancy pants! 8)
What a large gold ring he has.. is that a Xena Warrior Princess Frisbee OR is it a large wedding ring?
;D
Cheers

I've always had the feeling that CMoN's Barbarian King is inspired by Manowar's Kings of Metal cover:
(http://www.coolminiornot.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=12972&d=1336402283) (http://www.metalinjection.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/KingsOfMetal-e1375829551146.jpg)
And thank you very much, FramFramson, for the tip regarding the use of beastmen heads as orc ones. Looks really good. Now I'll have to rummage through my bits box, and see if I can turn some cartoony and dumb looking orcs into vile and ferocious ones.
-
Thanks guys.

Ahahaha, ohhhh Manowar. Always good for a lark.
I'll warn you about the heads by the way; seems they're quite difficult to get ahold of now. In my case, after several months of searching, a LAF-er on here wanted the bodies, so we split a box. You might have to buy whole ungors.
I can't take credit for the idea either. It was another LAF-er who did it first, though I can't at all recall who now.
-
OUTSTANDING You've come up with a WONDERFUL conversion with a BEAUTIFUL paint job & a charming smile. VERY WELL DONE!

a charming smile.
