Heya all,
nostalgy and grumpyness have finally hit us here big time:
big enough to dig old toys from the boxes and try to assemble playable Warzone forces lol
Therefore I found these and gave them new piccies on brand new background - more to come ;D

Nice minis and terrain. :-* I have a soft spot for WZ minis. Can we see more of your terrain please?
-
Sure you can - sadly just a little bit is finished the way I want so far :(
As for the scenic background - clicky! (http://plinthcountry.com/blog/)
-
Damn thats good. :-*
-
Nice work :-* :-* :-*
-
Awesome stuff! I love the old Warzone miniatures and its great to see them getting some lovely paintjobs!
All the best!
-
Cheers all - great to know some people still like old games and stuff.
Especially in ghastly times of failcast and ripoffs hobby era ;D
-
Nice paint on those :)
Warzone was very much a style of its own, with lots of chunky miniatures. I wasn't a huge fan of many of the troops but the Bauhaus Vulkan/Viktor battlesuits are my favourite walkers ever (with a few simple mods).
I look forward to seeing more of your painted troops/vehicles though :)

Which sucks. Because just when they were getting resculpts done here in the States, Target US shut down. :-(

Yeah, I stil cannot believe how someone could make such a big enterprise like TG fall :?
On the other hand Rackham also fell down...
-
Nice work on the figs and backdrop. I've got fond memories of Warzone as well.
I'm gonna steal that backdrop idea, if you don't mind.
-
No problem :)
There's a tutorial on my site about making this display base (which will be printed in GF zine shortly 8) ).
I already have another similar project in mind when things here get easier...
-
Lovely stuff. :-*
Great paintjobs and terrain.
Thanks for the tutorials as well. :D
-
Lovely!
great painting and background.
While it's true some figs were pretty dire, the very first releases were sculpts by Mark Copplestone and Kevin Adams! They were ahead of their time with the chunky sculpts. The wolfbanes for example are the size of todays' GW marine scouts!
-
Warzone almost took off in my hometown. Most stores seemed to carry it, and one had a very extensive offering. I think it was the 'superchunk' figures (I believe they were the Brotherhood?) that turned me off- for some reason I felt like they represented the range. Of course I was wrong about that, there's some really nice sculpts. I even bought the box set about a year ago...
Thanks for sharing the pics!
-
if your into the figures, Prince August in Ireland still sell the range - not a full one, though covering most of the basic figures/troops for each corporation and the Dark Powers. It's the only 28mm force i actually have at a usable level, and is still played around this area (using the 3rd Edition - Mutipedia.com (i think) has these for free download)
-
@all: you almost made tears of joy pour from my rotten eye sockets ;D
Cannot believe it's been so long since our Warzone group fell apart here (stupid studies...)
@aggro84: glad you like it and hopefully found it useful.
I have some ideas for more but my future is endangered by a big and nasty exam so until I come through it - no big hobby projects :(

Yeah, these minis definitely have this chunky something in lol
Few years back when we were trying to reanimate the hobby I ended up with new Brotherhood army - sadly don't think I can live long enough to paint them all ;)

Kev White also did his share of sculpting for Warzone! His version of Razide is still imo one of the best models from the range.

There are still some stores here in Poland selling WZ stuff - the community is pretty strong 8)
So strong there's been developed Warzone 4.0 fan project - really! :)

I wasn't aware that Kev White sculpted Vulkans until I read the basing tab... but they are well cool so it didn't surprise me (Vulkan conversion Pic):

Any chance of some close up shots?

My only remark: you need more cannon fodder: in fact you need any cannon fodder lol

My gaming group got into Mutant Chronicles after finding the Blood Berets game in our local HMV - in fact, we were effectively playing Warzone using Copplestone's Future Wars range before the game was even released! I have many fond memories of the first edition of the game (I played Bauhaus) and its a shame it all went a bit wrong and they lost their way with the second edition.
-
I have just started to get back into Warzone, using a combination of the original minis and what proxies I can make fit the theme. It is turning out to be a surprisingly challenging but fun painting and collecting project. I adore that Spawn of Demnogonis -- I thought mine was nice (it is eye-hurtingly bright green in places) but yours takes the cake!
-
The 3rd (Universe at War) edition went back to the 1st ed setup, but included most of the stuff in both editions - it's a doorstep of a book, and covers all the Corporations, Dark Legion and Dark Eden forces (full lists).

I had that for a while, but sold it on as it left out a lot of the stuff I found charming about the 1st edition (in particular the unique special forces of the Imperial Clans and other corporations). Personally, I think it went down hill when they got side-tracked by the Dark Eden stuff, then everyone jumped on 3rd ed 40k and lost interest entirely.

We do not compromise here: we use 100% WZ junk 8)
And true - painting these blocks IS challenging. Last week I found all broken parts of my ezoghul, pinned the bastard and atm I am trying to make up color scheme fitting that 'uge mofo.
Any ideas before the final decision is made? ::)
@Andy H: Yeah, I also blame those damn GW bastards for anything lol ;)
-
Loved the Warzone range of miniatures.Like others have said it did have some stinkers but what range does not.The Vulkans and Victors are great pieces as is the Orca suit too.The Kev White and Roy Eastland pieces really started to take the range in the right direction.
Collected most of the range but never played the game.Have started to sell in onto others who are still into it.The Excelsior Warzone forums are still a great place to visit.
-
I also had a lot of Warzone models, mainly Dark Legion, back in the day... There's still some Praetorian Stalkers, an Ezoghoul and an Eradicator Deathdroid in my cupboard I'll be selling shortly.
What I found most disappointing about the miniatures was that the minute details from the book artwork was badly translated into lead form, prime examples are Stahler in Carcass armor, Golgotha, The Eonian Justifier's claws and the Zenithian Soulslayer/Slaughtermaster... Especially the last two looked awesome and very dangerous in the books but as miniatures they were just a joke with those big sausage-like fingers.
I understand that they were made with survivability in mind and I guess they could be dropped from the table without something breaking off, but I'd take Rackham's multipart models with it's excellent sculpting detail any day over the Heartbreaker stuff.
Here's a Warzone resource for those interested.

That being said, The Ezoghoul is a great model... But it only works as a display piece, that heroic pose is totally unsuitable for tabletop gaming *sigh* ;)

Totally agree about everything but Zenithian Soulslayer:
true - the artwork is MUCH better than model but I really like this old alien thing. I remember I liked is so much I started painting all my Legion blue lol
You can all thank Cthulhu I didn't have camera during those ghastly painting experiments - just imagine Esoghul painted blue... :D

I mentioned on the Warzone forum how the nostalgia just kills me for this game. I just don't have the willpower to try to build any new forces for fear of having to over-pay for minis on evilbay to finish a force cause they are RARE!!!!1!one!! Out of Print !!eleven!1one! and all that.
-
Now that's what I call technofantasy game! :o
Where did you get Spawn of Demnogonis' panzerclaw from?

I've been tempted to give it a go again too, but I'd play it very differently now. For me it was always a little too closely modelled on 2nd ed 40k (in particular the sort of force you took and the fact that there was no particular narrative to the gameplay) so I'd play it as a more detailed skirmish game at the scale and detail of Necromunda or similar.
-
@Andy H: Yeah, I also blame those damn GW bastards for anything lol ;)
Curse them for producing a game people wanted to play! ;)
In all seriousness though, Warzone was often marketed at people who didn't like 2nd ed 40k anymore. A friend of mine who worked in the Design Studio was at a games show and was approached by a guy running Warzone participation games and told "no one plays 40k any more, come and play the game that's going to make it obsolete." Obviously he didn't know who he was talking to, or that 3rd ed was just around the corner!
Shame really, as I'd have liked to see both games do well as they're both very close to my heart.
-
By the time I was still into Warzone I had nothing against GW - I knew no Warhammer gamers and GW stuff was MUCH more expensive than Warzone (especially here in Poland).
The sh!t got thick when GW started increasing prices, decreasing amount of minis in boxes and all in all in ended with failcast... o_o
Shame really - there was a time when the company was concentrated more on gamers than the money.

The Spawn's Claw was a 1999 Archangel's. I also miss 1999 as I traded them all away... On a bum deal if I recall as I never got the minis I traded for. Ah well, such things happen.
I really need to have another game soon.

I'm a freelancer, I can barely feed myself, let alone my cat ;D

Hmm... I actually have 6 cats at home, 3 are pretty fatish... ::)
@2KratachBob: thanks for pics!!!
Again - it's so great to see old minis in action! :-*
-

:o :o bad Move, theyre damn rare these Days (needless to say i have almost the entire 1999 Range ;) :D)
-
I got into Warzone to get away from 40K 3rd edition and well... The players as well. They took 40K to new levels of 'sirius bizness' and the games became tedious displays of temper tantrums with a rogue's gallery of sulker-gloaters. After I ditched 40K and started playing Warzone, it's true that I got less games in but the games were by far more enjoyable.
I did start playing 40K again with some friends years later and we had a good time and I had the realization that it's never really the game system so much as the company of the people you play with. But, heck, the switch to Warzone and subsequent dissolving of Excelsior opened the flood gates to a ton of independent companies that might not have otherwise got my business had I not been so dissatisified with Games Workshop.
Edit to add: Yeah, those 1999 minis haunt me, probably the worst trade I ever made. Especially considering I got burned on top of it all.
-
Great collection of mini's TwoGunBob.
They look really cool.
-
My only remark: you need more cannon fodder: in fact you need any cannon fodder
It's also what I thought, as a warzone fan. Personally, I prefer v1 edition. Same thing for Chronopia (I've got the complete range of chronopia books).
Your razide on first page is inspiring. I also have tons of warzone minis (and chronopia) to paint. Mostly imperial, capitol and dark legions. A few years ago, I made the mistake selling a trenchtroopers complete squad...I was stupid.
What I like in target game range is the fact the figures are all metal. Good old days, even if the sculpt quality vary from one model to another. But the overal range is nice, with a very special style.
Same thing for chronopia. I recently bought a lot of Stygians, these figs are really cool.
Nice work again ! Can't wait to see more of it.

With such pics hijack as much as you want :o :-*
Cannot believe after ~14 years in the hobby I didn't get the Legion force painted, instead I've been washing minis off and repainting endlessly... :(
-
Seeing this pretorian maculator, it reminds me that I made a conversion of some dark legions figures, not painted for now, but I'll show you that also ! Let's go hijacking
Your biogeant looks really good too :o

I am that way with the Trenchers -- I am building a little Imperial force, but sadly the Trenchers are not so easy to find. I don't think it's nostalgia in that case, it's just that they are genuinely really nice models with a wide range of possible applications.
But yeah, it's that unwillingness to pay high prices for rank-and-filers that has led to my quest for substitutes. It's actually been reasonably successful so far ... maybe I'll start a thread on it sometime.
-
In local store I found trencher: hero, seregant, t. with charger and t. sniper for about 3 bucks each - want them for the collection? :)
-
There's also that new Trench 2114 game that looks like it could bring some proxies for Bauhaus and possibly Imperial :)
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=43024.0
-
You're right ! Nice future proxies with no doubt. But we'll see if they will be metal or plastic/resin. I collect only metal figures (except for miniature football, donjon and dragons, and heroclix).
-
Cool thread - and lovely paintjobs (even if I really don't like the Warzone / Chronopia aesthetic at all myself!).
I also wanted to point folks to Prince August [here] (http://www.princeaugust.ie/target_games/), since it seems that some of you are after certain minis from the range(s); maybe you can find what you're looking for there?
-
I believe Prince August was already mentioned somewhere in this thread but it's good to bring him up again :)
Oh and I like your Avatar, what a great classic game :)
-
If you are after Trenchers, aren't there 40 in the bag of plastics that are sold by E-Bay/Prince August?
I am caught up in all this nostalgia so...more converted Vulkans (just the heads replaced with a visor):

Whoops, and at the top of page 2 as well... Ah well, at least it's a memory-refresher!
Oh and I like your Avatar, what a great classic game :)
Thank you - Do you know, it's the only game from my childhood that I still dig out every couple of years and play... Controls are terribly clunky, and the game is highly unbalanced, but I love it all the same! lol
-
Aaaaaaah, the nostalgia! The mention of Warzone always makes me smile and look back to years of collecting all of the books, too many miniatures and reading-rereading-rereading-etc. everything for zillions of times.
I love Warzone, the setting, the miniatures and the game. It was a great alternative for 40K back in the days. The action system allowed for a more epic and movie-like experience than 40K. The game also was really good: great mechanics. In addition, you were spoilt for choice! So many new model profiles, there was something for everyone. Too bad most of them never were sculpted.
For me the best book was Dark Eden. I think the concept was brilliant and the artwork was superb.
I'm still glad with my Golgotha comics series, the three novels (pulp, but loads of fun!), loads of books, Blood Berets game and magazines.
Great topic. Thanks...good way to enter the weekend :)
-
Could not agree more.
WZ was a VERY good game, way superior to all other comparable game of that day.
That was one of the reasons to use the 3 action system for infantry also in my WWII game Victory Decision!
I still have my Mishima and Capitol armies:

I remember looking at that Necroconstruct from one of the newer books (big spidertank like thing) and wondering if it had any official stats or models.. Sadly, It looks like it had been scratch built solely for the photo :'(

Nope, that Thing was available as a Resin Kit (Armorcast i believe),You`ll find Stats for this Nasty in the UWZ Book.
Need to check my Storage Boxes i have a nib Grizzly Tank somewhere and the Bauhaus Armored Car too
-
I still have my books and magazings too.The Dark Eden book was a great idea. The comic's were really good too.
They were working on another comic series which never got released.I have some of the story lines from it along with some art work too.
The Magazines which came out showed some very nice pieces which would have come out in resin for the Dark Eden factions.Nice beast's which would have had riders if finished.Shame they never got released.
Chronopia was another favorite of mine.I loved the concept and twist on the races.
I even managed to get some of the studio painted miniatures and some of the Adrian Smith art work which he did for Empire Chronopia and other pieces.
Love these threads which bring back old ranges.
The 1999 range is another which I love and have most of too.
-
some of the Adrian Smith art work which he did for Empire Chronopia
ooh another Holy Grail:Empire Chronopia ;D :-*
-
Maybe it was just me that hated the Dark Eden stuff then :) I would have liked to see them expand the other locations already mentioned in the rpg, especially Victoria and C-Base. To be fair, there was a lot of creative work in the Dark Eden setting, but I suspect it was a bad call from the business perspective.
-

I have no personal experience of the plastics but they look OK to me... not as sharp as the metal ones but fairly good unit fillers.
I am actually quite obsessed with the Vulkans...

Some lovely memory lane photos here, but the minis in the opening post are great, love the photobackdrop, really atmospheric stuff. :-*
-
the plastic imperial were regular troopers, not trenchers. The scale of warzone v2 miniatures was more "40K-ish" too. The 1st edition of warzone 's got figures we could call "super-super heroic 28mm" ;)
And they are plastic ! No one will accept to buy plastic minis ! Ouch I forgot I wasn't in 1995 anymore lol
Since this topic is all ready hijacked, here's some imperial blood berets I recently (a few yzars ago) repainted :

That's what I call jungle fighters ! 5 minutes in the jungle and they'd probably have a heart attack causing by heat, but...kick *ss look ! lol
A lot of figures are in the same spirit in warzone. Some of them needs some conversion work (like the pretorian maculator), but except some real sculpting mistakes I will not give the references 8) overall figures are really great.
Zombies, giant monsters, steam punk, US action movies, ethnic variations, etc, etc... This game was innovating the scene. ANd it stills a great game, in my opinion.
Chronopia is even better, if you like fantasy. A more balanced figure range (with some really good sculpts, even today, see my stygians horde), really good background too (rulebooks can be readed as a regular book, since the backgrounds are really interesting, I think about fallen land, dwarven labyrinth, and land of 2 rivers especially).
-
wheres the Cybertronic love ? got a pretty large Cybertronic force in my storage bay (ie mums house !!)
-
Personnaly, I think cybertronic and dark eden were not develloped according to their potential and background (remember dark eden promises about giant beasts cavaleries and stuff like that).
In cybertronic forces, I just remember shock troopers wich were pretty cool with their original scifi guns. I'd be happy to see them again with good painting !
-
It was fun reading this thread, lots of memories are flooding back!
No, I haven't actually played Warzone, but I was part of the team creating the entire Mutant Chronicles world, including the games. As an editor I was chiefly concerned with making sure the texts were ok, adding bits here and there. The game I was primarily involved with was Blood Berets, and the mechanics for that game were intended as a testbed for Warzone. The very first time the activation sequence was used outside of BB was during demo games I ran at the game convention Target Games organized in Stockholm in 1992. Later on BB was turned over to Bill King with the intention of using it as a basis for Warzone. Alas, my contribution there has not been credited, which, of course, is somewhat of a bummer!
Fact is, the squad activation sequence and the actions for BB (and later Warzone) was chosen because I wanted to find something with a more organic flow than the sequence used by W40K. At that time I had very little experience with other wargames.
There is also a rather convoluted story concerning the origin of the MC universe, starting when someone from Pressman approached Fredrik Malmberg, the CEO of Target Games, somewhere around 1990 or 1991. His question was - could Target Games produce something similar to Space Crusade? Something that was suitable for 5 players instead of 4? Milton Bradley had just released HeroQuest in the American market, and the man from Pressman knew that Space Crusade wouldn't be published for a few more years, so as not to compete with HeroQuest. Sure, said Fred, and we started with a thorough analysis of the mechanics of Space Crusade, trying to figure out what made it fun or not. The main finding was that playing the chaos troops was ok, but not that exciting in the long run. We decided pretty early that it would be more fun if playing the monsters could be rotated among the players, and that whatever victory points you earned should be spent on your momentarily ouf of play faction, which means that no more than four factions were ever in play at the same time. This, of course, was to be Siege of the Citadel...
Then you had the world - where did the troops come from? At that time TG published a number of roleplaying games - Mutant, originally a postapoc lowtech game set in Scandinavia 500 years in the future, the fantasy game Drakar och Demoner, which started as an adaptation of Basic Roleplaying in 1992 (this is the game that later on morphed into Chronopia), and the horror game Kult. The original Mutant was retrofitted into the preapoc world of the 2090's in 1990, with an obvious cyberpunk style, big corporations instead of nations running the world, etc. That setting was then moved forward, or rather functioned as a springboard, providing the idea of the five megacorporations, and then Kult provided the monsters... And there it was - Mutant Chronicles! I have vivid memories of the afternoon we all sat in the office lounge area trying to come up with a name - Fredrik threatened to call it ZoidVoid or something even more horrible unless we could find a better name! Eventually it all came back to the original Mutant, with the addition of Chronicles to make it sound a bit more awesome!

Awesome! I really like hearing that kind of background information straight from someome who worked on these projects years ago :)
As a funny anecdote, one time I read an issue of Amiga Joker, a german amiga games magazine from the early-mid 90s. It had a review of Blood Berets in it and readers could win the game if they answered a simple question relating to it. When I read the review I immediately knew that I wanted to have this game, the background and plastic miniatures just did it for me. So I thought to myself "hm, not many people will send a postcard with the right answer to the quiz question, so why not send more than one?". And that's what I did, I send five postcards with the same right answer to the quiz to increase my chances to win the price. Shortly after I threw them in the mailbox, I went on a youth vacation, and when I came back there was actually waiting a big package for me... I won the game and I even got a congratulatory letter from the Amiga Joker editor! :)
So that's my little story about how I came into contact with the Mutant Chronicles universe, a short time later Warzone was released and my local game store had the miniatures which I bought some of.. The rest is history, as they say... ;)
Again I would like to say thanks for everyone who worked hard on Warzone and Mutant Chronicles & the various boardgames, the prices the Siege of the Citadel game fetches on ebay should be an indicator of the value of your work :)
Edit: As for the original Blood Berets (Red Berets in Germany, even boardgame names got renamed if they sounded too violent ::) ) I only ever yplayed it once right after I got it, and from my recollection I played the Dark Legion and had a very hard time doing any damage to the Imperial forces with my worthless Legionnaires and the single Nepharite! :D
It's also interesting to hear how the Mutant Chronicle name came to be :)
-
In local store I found trencher: hero, seregant, t. with charger and t. sniper for about 3 bucks each - want them for the collection? :)
Actually, I have all those guys! Well, I am not sure about the sniper, but I'm almost sure. But thanks!
If you are after Trenchers, aren't there 40 in the bag of plastics that are sold by E-Bay/Prince August?
Those are regulars rather than Trenchers; Trenchers have the long coat or cape, and their helmets are rounder in outline. I have _two_ of those bags, since both I and my buddy in this Warzone-revival project had the boxed set back in the day. That's where the beginnings of my Imperial force have come from. :D

Some lovely memory lane photos here, but the minis in the opening post are great, love the photobackdrop, really atmospheric stuff. :-*
Cheers! :D
That's what I call jungle fighters ! 5 minutes in the jungle and they'd probably have a heart attack causing by heat, but...kick *ss look ! lol
Naaah, I bet under these 'uuuge shoulder pads there are solid air conditiong systems installed ;D
As for Chronopia - can't say I ever seriously liked any of minis from the gange - seems like it's not my cup of tea. Although I got 2 or 3 models just to have something from the extinct range...
wheres the Cybertronic love ?
I must say the first model which blew me away was Eradicator - buddy of mine had it and painted it nearly the same as original, studio pj (at least that's what I thought 13 years ago or so): that time it was something unbelievable for me to see model with it's eyes painted lol
Recently I got the model with arm missing but I promissed myself to see it done on display base as soon as I can recreate the missing part.
It was fun reading this thread, lots of memories are flooding back!
No, I haven't actually played Warzone, but I was part of the team creating the entire Mutant Chronicles world, including the games. As an editor I was chiefly concerned with making sure the texts were ok, adding bits here and there.
The celebrity!!! :o ;)
Great to see here someone who'd been pulling some Wazone strings.
I read some theories about game's fell but since you are pobably the most appropriate person to ask:
did it REALLY had to end this way? :(
-
Did anyone else enjoy the short stories, especially from the 1st edition, as much as me? It might be a case of serious nostalgia, but I thought they were awesome at the time, especially "Sgt. Carter" about a platoon of Free Marines plus Kane, the Brotherhood Inquisitor fighting against the Dark Legion in the junges of Venus. Classic stuff!
-

People who are loving warzone and amiga must be good people :D I'm still using one amiga 1200 for retrogaming, and using modern interpretations of amiga (Aros, Morphos) too ;D

Presumably Bill King's work, as he'd just left GW and started on Warzone - he's a very talented writer.

You mean the failure of the company?
I was employed by Target Games between 1986 and 1993 as an editor, translator and games developer, and then freelanced for the company until it went under. During all that time the company was dancing on the edge of financial disaster, and almost went down in 1988 and 1993, before it finally collapsed in 1999. It was a wonderfully creative place, but as a company Target Games kept overextending itself, and reality finally caught up. With someone less impatient in the lead, and not as eager to jump onto the next great thing before it had really consolidated the previous step, it may have been around a lot longer.
-
What'S important is that the people involved found new places to do what they are good at, and that gamers still play the game they created years afterwards :)
It's a shame about the miniature molds though, from what I understand they were all destroyed :(
-

Here! :D
People who are loving warzone and amiga must be good people :D
And must be rather adult: I've noticed most of spammers in this topic are over 30 years old.
So looks like while being teenagers we were basicaly drooling over the same miniatures lol
You mean the failure of the company?
Yeah, that's what I meant.
Thanks for reply - looks like you confirmed all the rumors I read while TG was going down. Sad story really especially the company released such a classic as Kult (both CCG and RPG) - until it really went down I was quite sure everything was fine :?
It's a shame about the miniature molds though, from what I understand they were all destroyed :(
Exactly - always thought it was totally weird and kinda stupid to destroy the molds - couldn't the be stored or something? :(
-
Kinda OT, but it's the same when Ral Partha lost the rights to cast AD&D miniatures... Some of the best miniatures ever produced, and all the molds were ordered destroyed :( Really a shame... Oh well, money is still king ;)
-
Well, thanks to this thread I have been assembling Vulkans and Victors this afternoon. 5 shiny bodies all attached to bases ready for the arms and converted bits to get done tomorrow. I must admit that working with miniatures that have a higher lead content is great fun because they drill so easily :) .
-
Hi Kids, all the molds were not destroyed, you can still buy all the Warzone/Chronopia figs from Prince August.
I think it's www.princeaugust.ie or something like that.
-
Whoops, Prince August has already been mentioned... oh well...
There were a bunch (5-6) of us who used to play Warzone a lot, it was so much better than 40K!!! I went on a trip, and when I came back the company had gone under, and all my friends said they couldn't play it anymore since new stuff would not be published in the future. I still think they are all nuts. My fav was Cybertronic. Don't tell GW, but LARGE portions for my 40K/fantasy armies were Target figs! ;)
And yes, I have a Bauhaus Grizzly around here someplace.
-
I'm pretty sure I read read somewhere that all molds were destroyed after the Mutant Chronicles rights changed hands and Prince august only bought off the remaining stock which they are selling now bit by bit, and that's why most blisters are out of stock now :-I
-
Hi Kids, all the molds were not destroyed, you can still buy all the Warzone/Chronopia figs from Prince August.
Unfortunatly, you can't. A lot of figures are not available anymore, in both warzone and chronopia ranges. Especially the great swamp gobelins, imperial trenchers troopers, and other things like that.
-
I just have to tidy up the heavy weapon upgrades... but these have come out of storage to get some love because of this thread :) :
I have decided on squads of 9 with a comms robot to be added later.
-
And yes, I have a Bauhaus Grizzly around here someplace.
Lemme know if you ever need it got painted :D
@Inso: What was the original "face" of the bots? I mean - not the gs visors :)
-
They had human heads sticking out of the top of the body, with a metal collar around them to protect them. They looked daft and very vulnerable to me so I filled the area and put a lid on it :).
-
May I contribute a picture of my own? This is the only MC mini I've actually painted. It's the plastic ezoghoul from Siege of the Citadel, and I must have painted it maybe a year after the game was released, which would place it around 1994 or 1995 or thereabouts.

I know it's probably an impossibility but I'd love to see a company revisit Mutant Chronicles and Warzone to create miniatures that more closely match the artwork. Just seeing how much better the second version of the Purple Shark is to the original shows that the designs concepts are strong. They just were not often translated well. Modern digital sculpting could make minis that looked like Paul Bonner's paintings and that would be amazing.
-
That would be fun! The illustrations, both by Bonner and Parente, are great and really should be explored fully. I had the privilege of meeting both of them at the one and only Doomtrooper World Championship, and they were both very friendly and approachable, and of course great artists! Parente is busy with his Dust game now, but is still just the same.
Another detail that may interest any Doomtrooper fans... You know that the images on the cards were round, right? Whenever a piece of colour artwork arrived at the office the graphics department used sheets of paper with round holes of different sizes cut out. These were used to scan the images looking for parts that could be used for different cards. Nils, the art director, told me that they had used one of the larger and more detailed paintings for - if I remember it correctly - 23 different cards!
-
They had human heads sticking out of the top of the body, with a metal collar around them to protect them.
Thx :)
@Willypold: Nice job!
I have no idea the model I painted came from (some kind of master cast of something?) but it was MUCH bigger than this one and 100% metal...

What he said!
I really love artwork P.Bonner did for Warzone and would love to see miniatures matching them properly.
-
This topic has had me digging out my old books and looking through them. There are loads of miniatures missing from the range which have stats in the different books.
I would have loved to have seen the Barking Spiders or Dogsoldiers.
Paul Bonner is a great artist. He did some great work on the Vor the Maelstrom range too.Another great concept for a miniatures game.A real shame the kickstarter for a new version never made it.
-
I found these in the weird war section (they show the heads sticking out):

@manic_miner: You mean FFG Warzone?
Sadly I am not surprised the thing died shortly after the birth. I can imagine they were trying sth new and maybe innovative but quality of minis was just really bad - from my point of view...
I didn't even care about the scale and the fact these were prepaints but such a huge company could get decent sculptors.
After all they sell board games with sweet models included ::)
@Inso: Thanks :)
-
Hi!
@manic_miner I suspect the reason the Vor kickstarter failed was that unlike some of the big success stories like Mantics Kings of War or Sedition Wars is that the givaways were a bit poor.
About the best one could expect from it was a copy of the rulebook which just didnt fire peoples imagination, especially as the writer kept it so tightly under wrap and there was very little or no concept art.
Now if he had made a basic rulebook with the core rules and released it as a pdf and a couple of miniatures sculpted up he would probably had quite a lot more interest now it looks like a new Vor is never going to happen, especially after the forum was taken down by Skuzzy, possibly because the only topics which got any attention was the ones asking for news on what was going on...
I'd really love to see someone take on the Warzone and Chronopia settings again and actually make a proper job of it this time, unlike the horror of the plastic FFG effort.
Its got such a fantastic setting along with some really interesting forces but due to it failing three times now I suspect its unlikely to ever resurface which is a real shame!
Saying that if they could jump on the kickstarter band wagon they could fund an initial set of releases to get them going. Oh well one can dream!
All the best!

aye, have to agree, although the 54mm Scale Game is actually pretty good,me thinks :-X (i liked the Movie and the DoomTrooper Videogame too :D)

The Barking Spiders and Dogsoldiers were from the Casualties of War book which Target released. It also has some other cool units and characters which were never produced.
Have a look at this post on the Excelsior forums.
http://forum54.oli.us/index.php/topic,7056.0.html
Francesco has done a great job on this piece.Looking forward to the release. He also has other pieces which he has done.
The FFG Warzone range could have been great in a smaller scale.Having to sort out scenery and such for a new scale is too much for some gamers.
It would be great to see Warzone and Chronopia done again. Not sure if it will happen though.
I think Vor would have been great to have seen again.A real shame the forums are down too.Loved the Pharon and would have liked to have seen more miniatures released for the range.
-
About the Bonner art, ever notices how virtually all characters wear the same kind of boots? With no laces and a thin flat sole that looks nothing like modern military footwear? I thought this silly and it was the only thing that bothered me about hte otherwise great painting style.
-
If there would be a Warzone kickstarter, I'd sell my house to fund it :D
Would be awesome to have Warzone alive again...and while we're at it, also do Mutant Chronicles. Never played it, but the rulebook looked really nice and the rules seemed to have potential. Would be great to replay the first book of In Lunacy-Frenzy-Dementia
-

Sadly I have never played DT videogame - only saw some on youtube :(
As for the movie - it was worse disaster than FFG Warzone: I mean come on! All goodie character cooperating? No nepharite? No razide? All Dark Legion lookking the same? Meeeeeeeh :-[

Never thought about it but really liked the fact most of shoes were so easy to paint: snakepite leather, flesh wash and voila! lol
If there would be a Warzone kickstarter, I'd sell my house to fund it :D
I am not sure I'd risk my land for Warzone but it'd be surely the first kickstarter project I'd support :)

lol lol actually i liked the Fact that the Machine make only one Type of Mutants-one Machine-one Mutant sounds reasonable to me ::);also i liked all the Techie Stuff:The Bauhaus Tanks, the Aircraft Scenes ;D
Not to mention the great Cast:Fürmann,Perlman,Malkovich and Thomas Jane in the same Movie 8)
honestly ive seen worse:Batman+Robin for example lol
-
Well apparently tastes differ ;)
And in the meantime Valpy is throwing the party - you're all invited as long as you bring own beer and Warzone minis :D
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a352/demi_morgana/Smieci%20na%20bloga/Valpy_600.jpg)
-
Awesome paintjob on Valpurgius! Its nice to see a more muted paintscheme on him rather than the vivid green and purple of the original!
All the best!
-
Looks like he snatched those shoulderpads from some poor Blood Beret. I think I'll pass on that party offer ;D
-
Just to make it clear - I didn't paint the model: it was done by Todd Arrington.
It was the very first painting commission I placed because despite several attempts I never managed to paint Valpy myself. Also - it is the very first model I ever purchased :)
-
Great paint job by Todd, great picture too 8)
-
Todd Arrington? Deaddog, right? The guy who painted for Privateer Press? He is ace. And it shows, great Valpurgis. Damn it...now I want to paint Warzone too :D
I'll start with the Gomorrian Emasculator, my alltime Dark Legion favorite. Gotta love the artwork too!
-
I think you weren't allowed to be in the Dark Legion unless you had a name that sounded like a metal band. When we started to get back into the game, we were reading the rulebook and just laughing with joy about how marvellously, unashamedly over-the-top the names are.
I mean -- Carnal Harvester, Supreme Necromagus ... "Necromutant" is just an amazing name. When I was younger, I didn't like those names because I thought they weren't serious enough -- now I just appreciate the bombast of it all with unironic pleasure.
-

The same 8)
I really like his style - just very cool and "believable" - I prefer it that some super fancy GW official paintjobs.
Sadly pic is f*cked - have to retake it (the bunker ain't easy to work with)
I'll start with the Gomorrian Emasculator, my alltime Dark Legion favorite. Gotta love the artwork too!
I really like the artwork but official model is just stupid...
I prefer FFG's version - I'd surely repaint the prepaint and the fact it's 54mm scale would just help - emasculator supposed to be 'uuuge! :)

Barking spiders lol
True - the guys had lotta imagination with naming new models.
-

Nah, don't like the FFG version at all. In fact, don't like any of the FFG models. The style is just way off for me. Maybe I'm just a nostalgic old fart ;)
By the way, anyone seen this link:
http://www.mutantpedia.com/eng/Warzone.html
You can also find the latest rulebooks and loads of good gaming stuff! Excellent!
-
Apparently we represent similar lever of fartness: I have just bidded Gomorrian Piggy lol
And checked the artwork again - indeed it's not that big as I thought (skulls for reference)
-
:D
I'm thinking of painting him purplish to red, a bit like the artwork on the Razide. I'll airbrush the blue/purple color first and then red. I really like that color scheme on Bonner's Razides. I think this will be my main color for the Dark Legion. After the Gomorrian Emasculator \m/ I will do the two Praetorian Stalkers (also fan favorites...great names and the old models are terrific!).
-
Pretorians are on my paint list too - although I will try to copy the official (smurfish) look.
As for the pig - Maru from COFC painted this for the minis exchange: sadly not for me :'(

I can unequivocally say that that is the finest cybernetic space minotaur in hair bow and novelty slippers that I have ever seen.

Indeed - if anything it makes it look even more evil!
-
Maru painted one more WZ evil-doer ;)
Really dig the fleshtone on this piece!

The painting style is extremely similar to Rackham's confrontation miniatures catalogue images. Very cool!
