Wee Aggro and I managed to get in a fantasy themed game today. It didn't really fit in with any of my other threads, so I thought I'd start a new thread here.
A lot of these miniatures I painted a few years ago and I've never posted them before.
Here's a few photos.

There's a lot of photos, so I linked them to the blog.

PIC HEAVY WARNING though. :D

Nice pics and AAR at the blog.
What rules did you use? MEST?
Thanks for sharing.

Ditto.
Another great thread, by the looks of it!
Looking forward to more.
;D

Looks good, and a good game. 3' x 3' boards are perfect for fantasy skirmish gaming.
I couldn't quite work out which rules set you were using mind you.
Duncan
-
Thanks magokiron, Mason and dijit. :D
When I meet with my mate Kitrok we play with his MEST rules.
At home, with Wee Aggro, I play a sort of simplified version of the MEST rules to keep the lad's attention. ;D

The Mice & Men look GREAT..I spotted the Warlock in your size comparison post.VERY WELL DONE!
How old is Aggro the Younger?

Wee Aggro is 13. and is actually not so "wee".

Lovely painting. I specialy like the front humans. :)

That's a great looking board and a fun looking game - nice one!

Thanks Thantsants! :D
These are some (Alternative Armies?) figures I found in a shoebox about a year ago.
I quickly painted them up soon after I found them. Not the greatest figures, or paint jobs, but they were essentially free since I forgot I even owned them! :D

Sorry, the first couple pictures are a blurry in places.
-
Turned pretty good to be "a quick paint job".
It's always a pleasure to open a box or drawer and find some minis you don't remember you had.
Even better if those minis fit with one of your ciurrent projects/games. lol
Thanks for sharing.
-
I am not sure about the 'Not the greatest figures, or paint jobs' bit, both look pretty good to me.
If that is the result of a quick paintjob, I envy you.
-
Those are really good. I thought I was the only one who actually likes the look AA got to the Erin range.
A sadly under-rated game IMHO.
-
Nice ones. I agree they look rather good for a "quick one"... ;)
Good old treasure boxes, I hope you'll find more somewhere.
-
Those erin figures look great :-*
-
Thanks magokiron, Mason, robh, Doomhippie, & Lowtardog! :D
Apparently I'm my own worst critic. ;D
They are pretty cool figures.
They probably don't hold up to modern standards but there's a certain charm to them as well as a lot of "older" miniature lines.
-
I really like your Alternative Armies figures. Great paint job and they have bags of character.
-
Great find there, aggro! I think you did a terrific job on them, they all look very good!
-

I agree...Great Minds again. If they are not state of the art minis that only makes the LOVELY brushwork you graced them with all the more remarkable. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Not familiar with the range but I actuall really like them - very characterful wild men!
Nice work with the old paint brush too

I keep finding myself drawn to them too! If it wasn't for that HUGE pile of Celtos I have...
Is there a game too? Any good?
Great painting, BTW!

Very good. Smaller bands than Celtos and less involved. Ideal for small skirmish games with limited numbers of figures. 8 or 10 troops is enough for a game.
When AA launched the 2nd edition there was a participation game around the UK shows that was beautiful. Only small (3ft x3ft IIRC) Green meadow, little river, waterfall, lots of flowers and plants, small animals.....a real work of art.
-
Thanks everyone for the kind words. :D
I'm really tempted to start a Conan / Hyperborean adventures project now!

That's interesting, I never knew Alternative Armies came up with their own ruleset. They sound pretty cool.
I like the Celtos line of miniatures as well.

Here's a few more figs I painted a few years ago.
Some of them were used in the last bat rep.

Very nice, you have worked some excellent poses in there. I like the dark colour palette, suits them well.

Great stuff! Your prolificness is frightening!

Thank robh and Funghy-Fipps! :D

I cannot tell a lie. I painted these a few years ago.
I'm not that fast. :D
-
So I've been really inspired by some of the old school miniature projects I have seen going on here.
There's something really cool about finding an old neglected miniature and giving it a little TLC.
So I've been checking ebay a lot and doing some bidding, only to watch the sale prices sore out of control.
Recently I bid on some miniatures and actually won the bid! The photo was pretty horrible. I could barely make out slotta's so I assumed most of them where old GW. I counted maybe 60 miniatures in the picture.
I figured "What the hell, I'm in a gambling mood" and bid on them, even though I couldn't really see what they were.
This is what I got:
I PULLED THE PHOTOS. NEXT TIME YOU SEE ANY OF THEM THEY WILL BE PAINTED ON THIS THREAD OR ARRIVING AT YOUR DOORSTEP.
What a haul! 100 plus, totally awesome miniatures. It's amazing what fun and funky miniatures GW used to make. I really lucked out on this purchase!
I'm really going to enjoy painting these fellows.
I can't believe my luck!
-
A verry juicy haul there, if you paid less than 3 figures for them then you got a bargain. In case you don't know, the ape like figure is an original limited release 'Jokaero'.
Cheers!
Joe Thomlinson
-
Good haul :) Looking forward to seeing them painted :D I am going to enjoy this thread, shall follow your blog too!
-
What a steal!
:o
That is a great result, aggro, some real classics in there.
Well done!
Looking forward to seeing them coloured in...
;D
-
Fan fookin tastic! Amazing haul I'm totally jealous
-
CONGRATULATIONS! I can see some Old Friends in that mix...a few are still hanging around. It's good to see one our more talented & prolific painters get such a bonanza. Have FUN with all the painting...we'll have fun watching your Fantasy Thread grow.
-
Lovely haul there. There really are some classics amongst them - well spotted!
How much did you have to shell out for them?
Duncan
-
Undead Samurai, Chaos Thugs, that damn witch w/ the cat that has eluded me 50 times! Damn fine haul!
Now how abt selling me the witch? ;)
-
Love your mortheim stuff aggro! Allways been one of my favourite sytems. And your haul makes me soooo jealous ;).
-

I knew he was a Jokaero miniature, It said so on his slotta. :D I had no idea he was so rare.
Thank you Black Wolf, Mason, ilikepaintinglead, DeafNala and Theatralic.

I don't want to say. I don't want people to hate me. ;D
Keep in mind I had next to no idea what I was going to end up with. All I could make out was approximately 60-70 models.
Other than seeing some slottas, I had no idea what most of these minis were or what kind of condition they where in.
I really lucked out. :D

So this thread got me thinking.
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=43442.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=43442.0)
I have some Mordheilm stuff, I have some of those old school GW miniatures left and I'm eventually planning on placing a LAM Bruegelburg order.
I'd like some fun a funky enemies for them, maybe undead or chaos, but with an old school John Blanche vibe.
I been looking around, Black Tree Designs, Reaper, Mega Miniatures, and I haven't really found anything yet.
I'm really only interested in metal (life is too short to paint plastic), and minis that are still be available (no OOP please), and can't be too expensive.
I'd like to end up with a decent warband for skirmish games, around 20 miniatures or so.
Any suggestions, or am I being way too picky?
-
Have you tried Ral Partha?
http://www.ralparthaeurope.co.uk/ral-partha-fantasy-c-37.html
Four A Miniatures have some great demons and monsters
http://www.fouraminiatures.com/page2.htm
-
Wow! a reply already. Thanks Thantsants! :D
I really like the Four A stuff it's just not quite what I was looking for.
The Ral Partha Europe has some really neat stuff!
I imagine the newer slotta stuff is comparable size wise to Mordheim stuff.
These guys are right up my alley. Fun, funky and different. I just wonder how they scale up?
-
I've still been looking.
I think I'm just going to have to start hitting evilBay. ;D
-
Not sure about scale with the Ral Partha stuff to be honest.
Ebay always a good place for a rummage!
-
Well if you like the Ral Partha minis, you don't have to order them from Europe; here in the US of A they're Iron Wind Metals:
http://www.ironwindmetals.com/d/index.php
-
Check out Viking Forge:
http://vikingforge.datasquire.net/25mm-asgard-fantasy.html
They have the old Asgard fantasy range.
Some great old-school sculpts, their Barbarians and Dwarves are my personal favourites.
I have a whole bunch of the Dwarves that I want to use as a Gnome warband for Mordheim, as they are smaller than GW Dwarves.
Beautiful sculpts, though!
-
Thanks DeafNala. Thanks Mason. :D
That old Asgard line has some pretty cool sculpts. :-*
I tried something different with my Fantasy Figs.
Normally I prime black and dry-brush white.
This time, I started with a light brown primer (grey would work as well), followed by a top down white primer, followed by a black wash.
I noticed the the base colors went on very smooth and required a lot less work. I'm really happy with the results.
I also purchased a brown and a black Pigma brand Micro Pens for drawing on pupils. It would normally take several tries to even get something passable if I just used a brush.
-
Really looking forward to seeing how these turn out with the brown primer, Aggro. I just got some myself so I'm happy there's someone else whose experiments I can learn from... Looks promising so far.
Those old Asgard Barbarians are some of my favourites too. Hard to resist... I think they'd take the treatment well.
-
I recently made the switch to brown primer too, mostly because it can be bought at the hardware store for $3! Nice saving!
All these were brown primered:

I've completed (minus the bases) two more minis and they are looking great (for me). :D

I have been priming my figures brown for years, mainly because it works as a great base for so many different types of materials: leather, metal, flesh etc.
It cuts out a lot of the work that black or white can create.
-
Small update:
I've been scouring eBay and managed to pick up some Chaos Thugs, Beastmen, Cult of the Possessed and Chaos Hounds.
I'm choosing Chaos themed minis because I decided I wanted more of Michael Moorcock feel to this project, specifically the first 4 Corum books.
I managed to paint up a few more miniatures that still need basing. I have base colors down on 4 or 5 more that need highlighting and detail work. I still love my micro pens, although I have only been using them for pupils.
I'm least happy with the lich. He looks a little too clean. The wanted the ghost a little lighter overall, but she still looks pretty good!
-
They all look great, aggro!
Be careful: Old classic Citadel minis are addictive!
;)
I will see what I have laying about to add to the parcel that I am sending you (stuff arrived this morning)... ;)
-
Ooooohhhh those are dandy. Especially that wizard.
-
The militia/footpad type guy on the left is my favourite - lovely colour tones 8)
-
Thanks Mason. I'm officially cutting myself off as of today, until I get caught up with my painting! As far as sending me something, you are too kind!
Thanks FramFramson! I'm very pleased with how the wizard turned out too!
Thanks Thantsants! I seem to remember that you acquired that mini recently as well. :D
-
Yup :D
You've set the bar high there!
-
The new additions are VERY COOL, &, other than the Little Spook, they're minis I don't remember seeing before...of course, lately there's lots of thing I don't remember. I like the way your muted colors work together. EXCELLENT WORK!
-
Thanks again Thantsants. :D
Thanks DeafNala. I can always count on you for a few inspiring words. :D
A few more WIP's:
Looking at the photo, the mummy needs a lot of work. I'm going to work on that shield little more as well.

Lovely stuff Aggro,and a cracking thread :-*
-
Simply great painting here lad :).
-
The Demon is looking great and more militia goodness - I might have to try red noses on a few of mine... 8)
-
OOH! VERY COOL! They all painted up to their potential. I love the Wounded Guy & the Devilish Fellow, & the Little Striped Pants Chap...well actually ALL of them. FINE WORK!
-
Thanks Blackwolf, M.P., Thantsants and DeafNala! :D
The red nose and cheek thing is obviously something I've seen elsewhere.
I like it because it gives the impression that the mini is either a heavy drinker, cold, or both. ;D
-

Sounds like me at the moment, although I can't be drinking heavily enough as I still have the cold... >:(

Ah yes, and sick. Drunk cold and sick. lol
Speaking of which: Three more.
It was getting dark out so the details are a little washed out.
-
Loving the greyish pinkish skin tones on the thug - what's your recipe?
-
Thanks Thantsants! :D
I use cheap craft paints generally so I can only describe the colours to you.
For this project I've been using a greyish brown mixed with a gradually lighter flesh tone. I add more flesh as I build up layers. Finally, I do a red wash on the nose and cheeks and maybe a dark blue wash for stubble.
For the thug, I stopped using the flesh tone early on and added white instead as I built up layers which I think gave him a sickly pale look. Also, I added a little red or dark blue to the mix (which I kept off to the sides) while I was building up layers for the "red nose" look and the stubble.
Hope that helps. :D
-
When I first started painting minis again, I used to base first, but I found that sand and grit would contaminate the miniatures while I was painting them. Ever since then I have been basing last. I've found that basing after you paint your models is a pain in the ass.
Looking back, I think it was mostly due to an error on my part. Not priming first, not cleaning my work area enough after basing and general sloppiness, so I've decided to base everything first again.
I also tried a different method for adding texture my bases. I brushed on thinned down GLUE, sprinkled on course sand and then immediately submerged in fine sane. I think this gives the bases a more natural appearance and I'm pleased with the results so far.
The lot with bases ready for painting.

-
I'm a clean, base, prime Guy myself...I tend to be less messy with the basing if it doesn't matter. That aside, the Harpy is an OH-SO-COOL piece...GREAT WORK!
-
I love that Thug, this Threads are killing me loads of models you immediately wanna have yourself lol
-
Thanks DeafNala and Theatralic.

You don't know the half of it. I have bought a lot of miniatures the last couple of weeks. lol

Productive as usual, I see, Sir.
And with the usual great results!
:-*
Some great facial work completed in that batch.
Looking forward to more...

Looks great! Loads of models with great potential and paintjobs :)

A previously unrevealed Harpy miniature.
I dunno - she looks to be pretty revealed there... ;)

Late to this thread but had a quick browse. Nice PJ's and nice to see someone else primes the same as me.
-
Thanks Mason, Jonas, and Andrew May. :D
I dunno - she looks to be pretty revealed there... ;)

I'm still painting! ;D
Although not too much to report. I'm almost half way done with this lot, still have loads more I bought off evilBay.

Finishing the bases makes quite a difference...GREAT LOOKING STUFF!
-
Here's some proof that I am still alive.
Real life stuff has been pretty crazy lately so I haven't been painting much.
I did manage to get a little work done recently and thought I'd post some of the results.
The photos are okay. Some of the subtle color shades aren't too apparent.

Nice and shiny :) Glad to see you back :)

Great work on the minis, characterful and nice :)
-
Great stuff!
Nice subtle paintwork on lovely classic sculpts.
That last Chaos Dwarf is my personal favourite.
:-* :-* :-*
And it is, of course, great to see you back, Aggro!
:D
-
Thanks Mason, Suber and Blackwolf!
I am still a little limited on time these days, but I am hoping to become a little more active here again soon.
Glad you guys like the PJ's.
:D
-
A TRIUMPHAL RETURN, aggro! The Old Boys, both short & tall, are HANDSOMELY DONE! The Dwarf with the Ax & his OpArt helmet is an old favorite of mine.
-
Great work on those figures. Loads of character both in the sculpt AND in the not-overdone paintwork. Great stuff!
-
Those old Chaos Dwarf models really stood the test of time. Can't believe they were dropped.
-
Great stuff!! and I really love these dwarf sculpts!
-
Thanks guys!
:D
I am really digging the old Chaos Dwarfs as well.
Its funny, because I am not really a "dwarf" guy normally.
Here's the other fellow from the blog in case you missed the clicky bit.

I am hoping to score some more some day.
:D
Next up will be a lot of Chaos Thugs and some Olley Beastmen.
-
I love how you've made the armor look burnished and used at the same time!
Jev
-
Hello Aggro, fantastic paint job on these classic minis, your style is so grimy and dirty, makes the minis look mean and battle worn; love them :-*. I also really like the bases with all the mushrooms, the bases suit your painting style.
Cheers,
Damien
-
Thanks Jevenkah and Damien.
Much obliged.
:D
Damien, you are the first person to notice the mushrooms.
I think they add a lot of character to the bases.
-

All things considered, I don't know how I possibly missed commenting on the Mushrooms...you NEVER outgrow your need for Mushrooms. At any rate, you're right, Mushrooms add a lot to a Fantasy base. The Guy standing next to the Mushroom also turned out TERRIFIC; the brushwork & subdued color choices enhance the Mushrooms WONDERFULLY. VERY WELL DONE!

I love your gritty style and top-notch brush work!
The old man is wonderful :)
-
I agree with what everyone else has written about this latest crop: bloody marvellous work!
-
Thanks Teshub and Fungy-Fipps!
I am hoping to get a little painting in this weekend.
I am hoping to share more soon.

I took a few WIP shots a few minutes ago as the sun was setting out here in California.

More great additions to your collection, aggro.
These figures really suit your more muted paint pallette.
Lovely!

Thanks Mason and einarolafson!
I still feel a little uncomfortable painting as it has been so long...
I am still getting my groove back!

I am still getting my groove back!
You look to be groovin' away!
It's just like riding a bike. (At least that's what my husband keep telling me as there are 4 Nick Lund Orcs waiting for me to touch up on the painting tray.)
Keep the pix coming please.
Jev
-
You're definitely getting your groove back...quickly. It's good to see some Old Friends getting a FINE paint job applied with a deft touch. GREAT WORK!
-
Nice work Aggro - love the skin tones as always 8)
-
Thanks for the kind words Jevenkah, DeafNala and Thantsants.
You are all too kind.
:D
-
I was sent to training last week and I am back in training this week, after going home for the weekend.
Of course I brought some minis and paints for my down time hours in the evenings.
I have been trying out some new techniques here and there.
Care to spot the "dip" experiment?
;D
They are all in various stages of completion. Most are "mostly" finished.
I will take some individual photos when they are completed.
There's a couple more photos on the blog thingy...

-
Great looking stuff Aggro, you're taking me back to the good ole days :)
-
Very nice collection of figures here and well painted. I'm guessing the dip experiment is the central piece. I've not used it myself as I've heard mixed things about it.
-
They look excellent :-*
-
Thank you Blackwolf, OLeary and Dr Mathias!
:D
The dip experiment is not the central piece.
;D
Looking at the photos again, its a tough question as the mini isn't very clear in the photo.
I will try to get some better photos of my experiments tomorrow.
-
Great work,like it.
-
Great stuff, aggro.
Loving your usual muted pallette.
:-*
I think that i may well have to adopt that style for one of my future projects.
It may well suit my old-skool LotR project perfectly.
8)
(I cant spot the 'dipped' either...)
-
They look great, and i cannot tell which is dipped...
At a guess, is it the back left figure?
-
A lovely collection there! :-*
-
With the current Retro-Craze, Memory Lane is getting a LOT of traffic lately. When the Old Guys & Gals look as SPLENDID as your creations, the Old Neighborhood is pleasant to return to. GREAT WORK...keep it coming!
-
Thanks luidinuovo, Mason ,Constable Bertrand, dijit and DeafNala ;D
The "dip" question wasn't really fair looking at the photos again.
It was the wizard with the blue robes!
I will try to show some close ups and share some thoughts tonight.
:D

I have always made it a policy to paint what I own before I buy more.
Unfortunately the Retro Craze and evilBay have created quite a lead mountain!
I am starting to feel a a little guilty about all the purchases even though I am generally only spending $1.00 to $2.50 USD per miniature.
:-*
-
What a lovely bunch. I really like the palette and style you use.
-
Great stuff! You are accumulating an impressive collection of painted models :-*
-
Thanks Jonas and Garanhir!
:-*
I still have so much to paint.
;D
I posted some of my experiments with the "dip" on the blog thingy if anyone's interested:

Hi there, I love the choice of colors of yours.
Are the minis for use in dungeoneering? I ask beause there are no patches of grass on the bases.
All in all LOVELY old style miniatures. Please keep 'em coming.
Best regards
GS
-
Thanks GS!

I would actually love to build a dungeon for these fellows to fight on!
I just haven't added grass and mushrooms to the bases yet.

More finished Citadel minis.

Great stuff, mate.
My favourites are Two-gun Bob and the Chaos Samurai.
:-* :-*
-
OOOH! MORE COOL OLD STUFF! The new Old Guys look TERRIFIC sporting their snazzy paint jobs & bases. Your Mushroom are SPECTACULAR; they add spots of color & interest to both the bases & the minis. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks DeafNala and Mason!
My biggest fans!
;D
-
I really like what you are doing with the bases. Nice paintjob, too.
I think any time soon i will have to take some time and spend some extensive time on your blog.
-
Thanks southheaven!
I am a fan of your work as well!
:)
-
I popped over to your blog and had a look at these individually and I must say they are wonderful. You use muted tones yet get so much separation between your lowest points and your highest points. I have real difficulty with darker tones and am struggling with my first goblin.
I've very much enjoyed looking at your work :D
-
Thanks OLeary!
The wet palette technique really helps as I like to mix my colors and muddy them up.
Give it a shot!
-

I've really only painted fantasy humans up to now and the whole skin thing is really tough for me. I've not tried a wet palette yet and with the warm weather coming, I probably should.
Thank you for the advice :-*
-
Wet pallettes are super handy, and you can knock one up fairly easily out of an old tin, blister pack sponge and some baking parchment... link:http://deadleadproject.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/ghetto-wet-palette.html (http://deadleadproject.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/ghetto-wet-palette.html)
It's a LOT easier painting with thinned paints with one of these (before, I ended up wasting a lot of paint as it kept drying up on my painting tile...)

Your welcome.
I wished I had tried it years ago.
:D
good observations myincubliss.
:D
-
I finally got over to the blog to see the close-ups. Awesome! I love your muted palette, yet there is so much definition in the muscles and folds of robes. Great smooth transitions in the shading too!
Keep sending those warm weather tips, please! It was 86 deg F here yesterday. (Of course, it was like 55 deg by the time I went out to the grill to cook dinner.) :(

I love your painting style, so any chance to gawp at your minis is a chance not to be missed.
That fiend is great, but my personal favourites of the bunch are the Wizard and the blunderbuss guy.
:-*
-
Lovely stuuf. I've just downloaded MEST, to give them a read through too.
Duncan
-
I'm off to take a look at your blog!
-
Thanks Mason, dijit and Fungy-Fipps!
:D
-
COOL PHOTOS & AN EXCELLENT REPORT! Congratulations to Wee Aggro...avenging himself for being dubbed Wee Aggro!
The minis & terrain look SPLENDID together. I hope you enjoyed your first Con.
-
Thanks DeafNala!
:D
He actually likes his online "handle" although he's not so "wee" anymore.
:D
-
I was trying to post on your blog but having tech difficulties. What I wanted to say was "Awesome"! It looks like a fun time and I liked your narrative style of the battle. The board looked great, I especially liked the hills. And of course the minis in the midst of all that were stellar!
I've never been to a gaming con, sf cons sort of scared me away (no offense meant, I just had too many experiences with ill-mannered folks at the few I went to). Historicon sounds like it might be more my style but here in New England, that's a damn long drive to Fredricksburg, VA for this year.
What was the atmosphere at the con you went to like? Is it a much different experience playing in a setting like that?
Thanks,
Jevenkah
-
Thanks for the kind words Jevenkah.
:D
I was only at Kublacon for 4-5 hours but I got a good vibe from the crowd.
It was just us playing in the corner with a real basic set up.
A few people asked us what we were doing and they seemed pretty friendly.
-
Nothing new painted.
Before my move I managed to get a little priming and basing done, but nothing to really show.
I did manage to get some gaming in last night using other people's terrain.

Hopefully I will be a little more active here again soon.
:D
-
The minis & report are EXCELLENT; from first hand experience, I can testify that the photos, nice as they are, don't do justice to your FINE brushwork & basing. GREAT WORK!
By the way, where did you move?
-
Some seriously tidy looking figures in that report, Aggro.
:-*
Welcome back to the fold.
:D
-
Thanks Mason and Deafnala.
:D
I am back in a little town called Aptos a few minutes outside of Santa Cruz CA.
I have moved twice this year, but I should be all settled in with no more moves.
Now, I just have to get everything out of boxes!
-
Sadly, I started these over a month ago.
Sort of a mixed bag of fantasy figs from various eBay purchases.
I have never had a lead pile before as I used to always paint what I had before I bought more.
I was getting a little carried away and I have about 2-3 times this many miniatures sitting around in boxes, un-primed or based.
I am hoping to get a painting area set up soon, so I can get cracking!
;D
-
OOOOOH! ALL THE COOL STUFF! I'm going to spend sometime picking out all the nostalgic & new stuff to ogle enviously. Have FUN with all of the painting et al.
-
I have managed to start a few WIP's again.
It's been a little hard getting back into the groove.
Some of these are more finished than others, they all need basing work for sure.
I tried a few "dip" experiments, not really pleased with the results, so I have decided to give up on the concept for now.
Any ideas or constructive criticism is appreciated.

Great work, mate.
8)
Love the limited palette (as usual).
It works really well on those wonderful old Thugs.
:-* :-*
-
The only way they would look better is if they were at my house... lol
-
:-* Love your style.
-
The Lads & Thingies are coming along TERRIFICALLY...I can attest that your fine work looks even better than in photos.
I can identify with getting back in the groove. The time away from the minis while doing terrain makes the Little Folk seem daunting...keep up the GOOD WORK!
-
Thanks for the kind words gentleman!
:D
-
Beautiful Aggro, I really like the warmth you have painted into their cheeks (especially the archer and Mr Crabs).
Cheers
Matt
-
These look great. I think that lighter bases might create a more pleasing contrast with these great colour schemes, but that's always a tricky trade off versus uniformity. Love that magenta vampire.
-
I love these mini's buddy.
-
Thanks for the kind words gentlemen!
:-*
evand,
I used to do a lighter base on all my minis.
I decided on the darker bases for my old school minis a while back.
I thought they would be more moody and give a darker wet earth look.
I think they will look good after I put mushrooms and flock on them.
:D
-
I managed to get some work done this weekend.

Lovely stuff!
-
That's some nice classic fantasy minis :-*
-
COOL STUFF! There are some Old Friends & some New Acquaintances..I don't recall seeing the Medusa or the Dead Guy Walking before. AND you've added a new variety of mushroom to the basing mix...LOOKIN' GOOD!
-
Oooh!
Nice work, aggro!
I do love that pallette of course.
:-*
Lovely muted, drab and boring wondrousness.
My favourite kind.
;)
Medusa and the archer are my personal highlights.
8)
-
Thank you all for the kind words.
8)
I was a bit rusty at first and it shows in places.
I am definitely getting my painting groove back again!

Lots of cool colors and blending! Well done. :-*

Love your collection - and the mushrooms ;)

-
COOL STUFF! The Lads & Whatever are all BEAUTIFULLY painted & based...mushrooms work wonders. The Gribbly Guy with the big eye is a favorite. VERY WELL DONE!
-
I love them Aggro. They are all very subtle with the PJs.
How have you done the rosy rich flesh?
Cheers
Matt.
-
Thanks again for the Kind words gentleman.
Constable Bernard, When I finish the face I add a thinned down burgandy wash to the cheeks, nose and lips. I then do a thin wash of a blue black for a 5 o'clock shadow.
Here's a few group shots of the recently finished models.

WONDERFUL STUFF! I love Group Portraits & this is no exception. All your creations are VERY WELL DONE!

Excellent work mate, love the colour palette as well its very fitting.

Old Grenadier demon, IIRC?
Thanks, Chris.
I shall start looking there.

Thank again for all of the kind words! :D
I am happy to share what I manage to produce every now and again!
Mason, It looks like Lead Asbestos was much faster on the draw than I was!
The bug eyed demon fellow did indeed have a grenadier base on him.
I think he may be available from Milirton.
-
Yep.
He is!

Some other lovely's there as well.
I only have the fellow with the club over is head.
He's on my paint desk now with some base colors on him.
:D

This weeks WIP's
I think the ghoul could use some more highlights after seeing this.

Some more stunning additions there, aggro.
:-*
I would love to know what colours you have in your palette for these fellas, as they work so well together.
Thanks for putting in the time to identify the ugly bugger, fellas.
Much appreciated!
:D
(Now I have to figure out whether or not I would ever use the others, or should I just try and find that particular one....?)
-
Wow, I'm floored. Your collection is just great. I might just steal that mushroom idea. Very Blanche-esque, so very much to my tastes.
Yours truly,
Sir Dryden
-
Prolific work Mate, LOVE the Grenadier Demons!
-
If you make me start re-collecting the Chaos thugs... >:(
Great work on a beautiful collection!
-
OOH! There is just SO MUCH COOL STUFF! The Thug with the pistols & Mohawk was an old favorite. It's a joy just slowly gazing in wonder at each of the pieces & how you've done them up. GREAT WORK!
-
Thanks for the kind words everybody.
Mason, I use cheap American craft paints, so a color recipe wouldn't do much good.
I can tell you I use a wet pallette, and I mix almost all of my colors myself as I go.
Sir Dryden, Yep, the mushrooms seem pretty popular, steal away!
Lead Asbestos, succumb to the temptation!
DeafNala, I am glad you like them.
As I said before, there are a few more pics on the blog

-
Fantastic Additions mate.
-
I like a lot all your stuff, specially the bases.
-
Mason, I use cheap American craft paints, so a color recipe wouldn't do much good.
I can tell you I use a wet pallette, and I mix almost all of my colors myself as I go.
Actually if the craft paints in question are Americana, they are available in UK...I sent Mason a list of site awhile ago.
I'm a crafts paint Guy myself.
-
Those undead look so lively! And diseased! Add me to the list of fans of your color palette.
I've heard mention of the wet palette technique, how do you do it? Did you make your own?
edit- is baking parchment here in the US the grease-proof paper folks are referring to in the workbench thread, anyone?
Thanks!
Jevenkah
ps- we also use Americana craft paints, went to resupply last week (I got new brushes Yay!) and the big craft store no longer carries the big bottles of burnt umber (Boo!). I might need that list of sites that sells them myself.
-
Very nice :) Enjoying your output here!
-
Thanks everybody!
Jevenkah, looks like you figured it out. You just need a tray of some kind with a lid, parchment paper, and a thick layer of wet tissue paper underneath the parchment. The wet tissue keeps the parchment moist for paint mixing and it keeps your mixed paint from drying too fast.
-
Your fantasy collection is really coming along! These new ones are great!
-
Thanks Spooktalker!
-
I managed to complete another batch of minis.
I will try to get better photos tomorrow, weather permitting.

I bought these Mordheim guys of eBay. I should have looked at the pics a little better as the previous owner went a little crazy with an X-Acto knife and green stuff on a couple of these. They were cheap though.
-
There are some minis I recognize & some that I've never seen before, but they are all UBERCOOL. GREAT brushwork & basing as always...VERY WELL DONE!
I can relate with the hack & puttied minis; i.e., I have a bunch of on-hold minis for friend/client Justin some of which he started to convert & lost interest...he also lost a lot of the cut off pieces.
-
:-* The undead knight in rusted armor is fantastic! The rust on the sword looks like it could flake right off! Is there any texture medium or is that all paint?
I'm interested in closer pics of that monster on camera left in the second row, if you're taking requests. :D Nice shading on its flesh.
I always love seeing more of your collection completed.
Jevenkah
-
Thanks DefNala and Jevenkah.

It will probably be a few days, instead of today, but I will get better pics of all of these fellows later.
No texture medium on the undead knight. Just a orange red base with brownish highlights followed by a mucked up silver and then silver highlights. I ended up giving him a light brown wash because he looked a little flat.
I was pretty pleased with the final result.
:D
-
I finally got a chance to take better pics of my latest batch of minis.

There are a lot more pics on the blog.

Also, I was trying to decide if I wanted to add mushrooms and flock to these Mordheim Cultists I have finished.
What do you guys think?
-
What do you guys think?
I think they look bloody lovely, mate!
:-*
As for the Cultists bases: Go for it!
They will all tie in nicely together then.
:D
-
I think without shrooms the mini including base looks a little bit to bland. Mushrooms and patches of flock will add color and contrast.
-
COOL STUFF all done up in your own distinctive style...GREAT WORK!
I think without shrooms the mini including base looks a little bit to bland. Mushrooms and patches of flock will add color and contrast.
Once you start down the Mushroom Path you can never go back...BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
-
Thanks guys! I appreciate the feedback!
:D
Shrooms it is then!
;D

I tried some pigments / weathering powders for the first time.
I used mineral spirits to apply the powders as suggested here:
http://forum.oldhammer.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=1358 (http://forum.oldhammer.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=1358)
I was pretty pleased for a first go with them!
Plus a workbench pic...
I also started to make the first few initial steps towards creating a modular cobble stone board.
I describe the thought process here:
http://matter-energy-space-time.blogspot.com/2013/11/november-23rd-2013-thoughts-and-wips.html (http://matter-energy-space-time.blogspot.com/2013/11/november-23rd-2013-thoughts-and-wips.html)
-
Great figures with great paint jobs! spent the morning reading you blog. Great stuff. Thanks
-
Although I don't do rusted armor & weaponry myself, the weathering powders did give a VERY realistic rust effect. GREAT WORK!
The buildings you have for your upcoming games board are TERRIFIC LOOKING pieces. Don't let the foam intimidate you; re, most slips in carving/drawing can be corrected...some Woodland Scenics Foam Putty does wonders. Have FUN with the project!
-
This just gets better and better! The cobblestone board looks great and I look forward to seeing it finished.
-
Thanks Fungy-Fipps, DeafNala and Bloodysword.
I am glad you all approve of my efforts!
:D
-
Fabulous old miniatures!!!! I love them all!!! Nice paint job on every piece.
-
Thanks Nedo!
:D
-
Great stuff!
I may have missed it, where is this guy from?
The winged fella?
-
I simply love your painting style :-*
-
Thanks M.P. and doowoopapocalypse!
:D
The vampire with wings is an old Citadel mini from their Night Horrors range.
Long time out of production I am afraid.
I really lucked out getting him!
:D

I created a fairly sizable update on the blog thingy for stuff I managed to paint in November.

Very nice, spooky and gritty. love them.

-
Everything in this thread is just so awesome, if I should comment after each update I would end up repeating myself too much :D
-
Thanks Za and Jonas!
:D
-
The new Lads look TERRIFIC! The Thug's shield & the Living Impaired Guy with the kopesh are my favorites. All are VERY WELL DONE!
-
Again I have to join the chorus: A nice and gritty team of thugs!
Please keep them coming!
Cheers
GS
-
Nice agro! That's an impressive output.
I still like the rosey cheeks and the rusted armour. The dude with the sledge hammer is stunning.
Cheers
Matt
-
Thank you all Constable Bertrand, GS and DeafNala!
I appreciate the input.
:D
-
Nice! :)
-
Thanks M.P.!
-
Please forgive the double post:
:D
But, I posted a tutorial on my blog:
It's the first part of a basic tutorial for an Oldhammer Chaos Thug.
http://matter-energy-space-time.blogspot.com/2013/12/a-step-by-step-tutorial-for-rest-of-us.html (http://matter-energy-space-time.blogspot.com/2013/12/a-step-by-step-tutorial-for-rest-of-us.html)
Before:
After:
Hopefully someone might find some aspect of it useful.
:D
-
Thanks for the tutorial Aggro, I tried the red check wash on my Western fig's - to intermittent success. Cool to see how you use thinner paints/washes. My GW based technique of: black primer, thick basecoat, Washes, base colour, highlight, drybrush is a bit 'thick' and patchy. Gotta try that wet palette. Cheers!
Matt.
-
Nice work, D!
It seems we do paint in a similar fashion after all.
You could probably be describing the way that I paint (although I have been known to do several layers of thinned washes...)
Best technique around for a quick and easy result.
:D
-
Thanks guys!
I am glad you found my modest efforts of some interest.
I will try to have part 2 up by the end of the day Pacific Time.
:D
-
The Thug Honcho looks TERRIFIC for the attention you lavished on him...EXCELLENT brush technique.
Your tutorial was informative & well written to the point it keep my attention...normally rules & tutorials put moi to sleep. VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks DeafNala!
I tried not to get too wordy.
:D
Part 2, the weathering powder tutorial, is now up.

Thanks Scurv!
Glad you liked him.
:D
-
The final brushwork on the Chaos Guy really brought him to another level. FANTASTIC WORK!
-
Lovely Thug you got there man. Love the last entry too from earlier in december. Those Chaos Warrior/thug types are stunning. Love the skellie with the bandaged head. Is it an old citadel one? Gonna have to try and grab him for my skellies at some point. :D
-
Thanks DeafNala and Diakon.
:D
Yep, the skellie is an old Citadel one.
-
Hi Aggro,
very nice tutorial!
I happen to use quite the same technique if less steps and not quite the results. But good to see that I am not the only one with the opinion that not every step in figure painting has to be done in expensive colors.
Keep them coming, your figures look great!
Cheers
GS
-
Looking good, mate.
8)
I may have to give that a go myself sometime.
:D
-
Those are some of my favorites from you! Love the expressions. There's no doubt violence is a way a life for these dudes and they're not complaining.
-
Thanks guys!
I am glad you liked the minis and the tutorials!
:D
-
Just a quick note to address the fixer I use.
I have only ever used Krylon Matte Finish 1311 spray.
http://www.krylon.com/products/matte-finish/ (http://www.krylon.com/products/matte-finish/)
It went over the pigments fine and did not distort them at all.
It has never given me a problem and I have used it on hundreds of miniatures over the last few years, except once.
I used a really old can, with only a little bit left in the bottom of it. I probably should have shook it up more as well.
It left some white spots on the minis that weren't terribly noticeable that eventually went away.
I highly recommend it.
-
Wow. Almost a full year and a half since I have posted anything!
I finally set up a painting table again and I have been slowly getting back into a painting groove.
I took these WIP shots to look at and check for areas that need touching up.
I figured I might as well share them.
The Goblin (2nd from the left) was the first one I have painted in years.

These Thugs are the least complete of the lot. I am not sure what color to do the thug in the middle's hair so I have left it as is for now. Any thoughts of a suitable hair color?
-
Glad that you're back with this :-*
What about a redhair thug?
-
Very nice muted tones as always aggro. Those bases are swimming in different colours, that's some very attractive basing sir. 8) 8)
Nice to see you back with a brush in hand.
Cheers
Matt.
-
WELCOME HOME, AMIGO! It's good to see you haven't lost your FINE touch. The latest additions look SPLENDID...keep up the GREAT WORK!
-
I think you should change the topic to "Fantastic" Thread. Really enjoyed looking through the pictures, and your step by step tutorials come in handy too. Great ways to make a miniature come "alive". Thanks for the inspiration :).
-
Welcome back, mate.
Good to see you posting again.
:D
-
Thank you all for the kind words. It is very good to be painting again.
verd, I decided to do orange hair for the Thug in question. I already have some red haired ones and I wanted to do something different, so I decided to go with orange instead. :D
Anyways, here are some finished (more or less) photos of these guys.

I haven't varnished sprayed these guys yet, so I might go back and touch up a few things now that I am looking at some of the photos blown up again. All around though, I'm fairly pleased with the results.
Looking back, I really think I need more Gobbos now!
;D
-
Beutiful tones on show here.
:-*
I have missed your regular updates.
Good to have you back on board.
:D
-
I really really love the middle guy in the second to bottom picture. Fantastic color choices on a very characterful miniature. Where is he from?

Looks like a GW Lord of the Rings mini to me, like a undead eldar.

Hi Aggro!
What a pleasure to read from you again. The pictures speak for themselves. I like them very much. keep them coming!
Cheers

-
SPLENDID WORK! The Old Guys are some of the FINEST pieces I've seen you do...love the Deadites in particular. There are some old friends in the mix as well as some that are new to moi, but they are all WONDERFUL.

That one jumped out at me too - that is the best painted dead marsh spectre I have ever seen - brilliant work there :-* The rest of the minis in this thread ain't too shabby either ;)
-
Nice work on all of these. Really like the pale skin tones. :-*
-
Wow, you guys are really making me feel welcome posting here again.
I appreciate the comments you all took the time to write.
Looks like a GW Lord of the Rings mini to me, like a undead eldar.
I got the mini in question in a evilBay lot deal. I'm not sure myself but GW LOtR seems right to me.
Thanks again so much.
On the desk now are some more old GW and one very interesting miniature I have never seen before.
I think its an old RAFM sculpt.
-
Thanks Scurv.
Another WIP pic.
All and all, I'm pretty pleased with how they are coming along.
I love the funky rhino man carrying the wizard.
I'm pretty sure its a RAFM Murch sculpt.
-
:o This latest batch looks very promising
-
The new Folk are LOOKIN' GOOD! That is indeed an Old RAFM Wizard & Ride...I think Cap'n John may have the one I did for him in the Immolating Display Case. GREAT WORK all around!
-
Thank you Kaiser and DeafNala.
-
I had to work all last weekend and the weekend before that I was out of town, so I haven't got a lot of work done.
First off, I present some more WIPs.
I like some better than others. The Demon on the far right is pissing me off at the moment. All green and he was too boring, so I added some red tints. Now there is too much red. Grrrrr!
Dynamic shot washed out by the sunlight.
I started messing about with some non-metallic metals on a couple of these.
And next...
"How not to build Dungeon Tiles."
I made these out of cardboard. Each one is 9 inches by 9 inches. I want to make some proper foam ones, but these were just a tester. They assembled quick, easy and cheap.
As you can see, there are some interesting combinations. I should have made a starter Tile and a final "Boss" tile too. The plan was to hand paint some cobble stone after I sprayed them with textured spray paint.
Unfortunately, I decided to cover the cardboard edges with masking tape. This process was pretty time consuming and took longer that cutting out the tiles in the first place. After I sprayed the tiles, the masking tape, shrunk and peeled in places leaving an unsightly mess.
They were only meant to be a trial run for fancy foam boards anyways. It still would have been nice if they looked half way decent though. I doubt I will bother painting them now. At least they only cost me half a can of textured spray paint as the tape and cardboard I had laying around the house.
Oh well,
:D
-
Nice progress work on a lovely selection of great sculpts.
:-*
(Are they from that hoard that you managed to pick up a while ago?)
As for the dungeon tiles: Why not just fix the foam on top of the thicker card and just add some glue and sand mix over the join?
It seems a shame to waste the progress that you have already made.
;)
-
As always aggro, your subtle hues are awe inspiring. 8)
The pink bits look alright to me :D
Cheers
Matt
-
The painting here is ACE. Really inspired work. I love the muted colors. Thanks for posting.
-
BEAUTIFULLY DONE once more! I enjoy you muted colors although I tend toward the garish myself.
-
Thank you everyone.
I appreciate the inspirational comments.
:D
Mason- I will probably do something with the tiles eventually. Again, they were only meant to be temporary in the first place. I wanted to see how they fit together and if 9 X 9 worked out to be a nice size.
-
Great stuff! I really like the red/green demon. Judging by the photos, I'd say you've balanced the two colours nicely.
-
What a great thread! Lovely painting and interesting models; I'll be following this for certain!
I'd never seen that RAFM wizard being carried in a chair before (code 2001e, according to the lost minis wiki (http://www.miniatures-workshop.com/lostminiswiki/index.php?title=Image:RAFM-SandS-2001e.jpg&redirect=no)), but now I really want it! Anyone have a spare? :D
-
Thanks Hobgoblin and Mister Rab!
That's cool you found the mini Mister Rab.
I remember seeing some RAFM catalogs back in the day, but I didn't remember that mini.
Oh and Mason, only two of those are from that big lot I scored. Almost all of them were either sold or have been painted at this point.
-
Nice to see you back aggro!
I like the color combo of the wizard in the chair with the flesh of that thing carrying it. The demons are nice shades as well.
Keep them coming when you can!
Jevenkah
-
That's cool you found the mini Mister Rab.
I remember seeing some RAFM catalogs back in the day, but I didn't remember that mini.
I've actually contacted RAFM through their Facebook page and they're having a look for the mold - just look what you've started! lol
-
Thanks Jevenkah!
Mister Rab, I was looking at a lot of old RAFM sculpts the other day.
They produced a lot of interesting miniatures.
Just be warned, they are pretty small even when compared to early slottas.
Still lovely though.
:D

Just stumbled over this wonderful thread ...
I would not give up and give it a try of rescueing, if You think it worth.
Cut away the parts that were sticking out too much, carefully, then use some glue and sand, spray/paint over again, maybe it will be covered enough, so it will not bother You when using the tiles for playtesting. Then paint as planned.
I just gather You have to be extra careful when using the glue on that cardboard. Maybe the already used paint will secure it a bit from soaking and therefore possible bending.
However ... awesome thread!
I very much like the rust You are painting. I am fearly comfortable with my own way, but yours look better, so I am interested, how You do it.
best wishes

Thanks Drachenklinge
I did a post on a blog I put stuff on about how I use weather powders.
http://matter-energy-space-time.blogspot.com/2013/12/step-by-step-tutorial-part-2-weathering.html (http://matter-energy-space-time.blogspot.com/2013/12/step-by-step-tutorial-part-2-weathering.html)
Hopefully that helps.
I had a very productive hobby day Saturday and finished a bunch of stuff and got a bunch of minis based.
I tried experimenting with different locations around my house for the best photo results this morning.
For what ever reason, on my dining table, with the blue candle center-piece-thingy gave me the best photo results.
I should probably just invest in a light box?
There are waaaay to many pictures to post here so here's a blog link.

The lady spirit is a stunner.
Thanks for the weathering tips too!!

FANTASTIC! That is a TRULY IMPRESSIVE array of miniatures you've added to your collection. VERY WELL DONE one & all!
I haven't any idea what that Beasty is either...other than UBERCOOL AND BEAUTIFULLY painted & based that is.

btw where is the shield from?
-
Cracking work, Aggro.
Some true beauties in there.
:-* :-*
-
Thank you Constable Bertrand!
Thanks phreedh!
I'm actually surprised an old timey miniature guy like yourself didn't recognize the Demon.
I got him (urm... her) in an eBay lot but it's an old Grenadier sculpt still available through Mirliton in the Demons section.
Thank you DeafNala! you are truly a gentleman.
Thank you weismonsters!
Its an old GW plastic shield, a little warped in the oven. ;D
And thank you Mason!
-
More excellent work Aggro: your posts are always an inspiration to me. Regarding buying a light-box: I constructed one from a shoe-box which I lined with tin foil. When taking pictures place a sheet of paper inside, pop the miniature(s) on top, illuminate with a couple of desk lamps (I appropriate some we already have in the house) with energy saving daylight bulbs (about 40w) fitted and off you go!

Who makes the model on the left here? I think I recognize it, but can't place it...
It's good to see the old Chaos Thugs getting some attention - they were some of my absolute favourite figures when I was first discovering the joys of Warhammer, and these paintjobs suit them down to the ground.

It's an old war machine iron kingdoms mini, can't recall the name of it.
Beautifal looking figs :-*
Looking forward to the next installment.

I really rather like those tiles. Reminds me of The Sorcerer's Cave.

Thanks Funghy-Fipps for the comments and the light box tip. It certainly sounds like a better solution to buying a light box.
Thank you Smith and hubbabubba. Smith, I have no idea who made that mini (evilBay lot you know) so I would go with what hubbabubba said.
And thank you Garanhir. The tiles have served their purpose, I got a chance to play around with them and I have developed some new ideas.

Aha! I'd been through the Warmachine and Hordes stuff, but didn't think of the Iron Kingdoms line. Thanks all!

Thanks for the figure ID.
