Our gaming group have been playing Strange Aeons for the past eight months or so.
One of the main groups of Lurkers (the Bad Guys) featuring in our campaign are the Mad Scientists and their creations (The Asylum), which included various experimental creatures which included a number of Zombies, so a detour into a Zombie Apocalypse seemed a natural progression.
The campaign that our group have been playing in had a British setting instead of the traditional U.S. enviroment, so the collection of miniatures featured were from Good Old Blighty.
One thing led to another and the upshot of all this is to run a campaign where each player has a group of Survivors (as in The Walking Dead) that they must lead through a series of encounters and to attempt to survive and prosper in a land now filled with the Living Dead.
Being set in Britain in 1929 should put a slightly different slant on things, the chief one being, compared to most Zombie outbreak type games, will be the availability of firearms.
Britain has always had stricter gun controls, so it will not be a game where every survivor has a firearm of some sort. Guns will be much more difficult to locate, as will ammunition.
This will be countered by the fact that stealth and careful planning will be rewarded, as each use of a firearm will result in more zombies on the board, attracted by the noise.
We should start playtesting this idea soon, next wek hopefully, with the game getting a thorough going over in the new year.
I already have a few zombies painted up (ten or so...), but will be needing much more, of course!
There are twenty based and undercoated, and another thirty or so still on sprues ready for converting (flat caps and trilbies will be the order of the day).
So, plenty of zeds to convert and paint in the next couple of months, and a few more suitable miniatures to source that are not armed to the teeth.
To set the ball rolling, here are the first ten period zombies for the project:
The Entertainers
(http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j478/themason73/LAMandzeds023.jpg)
The Zeds in Suits
(http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j478/themason73/LAMandzeds021.jpg)
The Hospital Staff and Patients
(http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j478/themason73/LAMandzeds019.jpg)
Flat Cap and a couple of possible additions
(http://i1087.photobucket.com/albums/j478/themason73/LAMandzeds024.jpg)
Not sure about the Mummy and the Elictric Chair Occupant, but I will use them for now until I have a few more painted up.
In a horde they would not be as noticable, anyway.
Its a start, just a few more to do.....
-
Great stuff - looking forward to seeing how this project progresses!
-
This is going to be so so awesome!
The walking dead?! That's just not cricket.
Looking forward to the approaching horde 8)
-
Great painting on those Horrorclix 8)

Thanks, chaps!
The walking dead?! That's just not cricket.
It may not be, but there will be cricket bats involved!
Progress will not be too prolific until the new year, as I am tied up with another project at the moment.
There are quite a few 1920's Survivor types in the collection already, so that is sorted.
Playtesting can commence.
There are also quite a few cars already weathered, I just need to get some stowage and pop it on with a magnet.
Here are a couple of those already done and awaiting 'stocking up'

Please excuse 'Shotgun Bob', the car-dealing Cultist, he keeps appearing everywhere!
EDIT: Forgot to mention. Can anyone recommend any good cheap options for stowage?
-
Playtesting will have to be put off until after the holidays, as trying to meet up with anyone at this time of year is a bit of a bugger.
The base rules will be the Strange Aeons set, with a few simple modifications to make them work in a slightly different way. The main change will be the campaign system, where you will run a group of 'survivors' in a similar way to running a warband in Mordheim, or a Threshold team in SA.
The group will be collecting resources that will have to spent on food, fuel, ammo, etc and the remainder used in a similar way to Map Pieces in SA to play specific scenarios on the way.
A series of scenarios will need to be completed to continue along the 'Survival Path' and eventually lead your group to a safe place.
This will of course need some playtesting to get the balance of 'Resource Points' achievable in each game correct, to make sure that it is not either too easy or too difficult.
The upside to this break is that I will have time to get all the extra rules etc typed up.
And paint up a few more figures, of course...
-
I can't think of a better time for the End Times than 1929...it would go along nicely the Great Depression. The idea of a past Post Apocalypse is very appealing to moi..your LOVELY minis & vehicles,of course, are also most appealing.
This will be yet another great thread to follow once the "C" Word is over with.
-
I do really this idea, Mason!
Keep it up. And more zombies ;)
-
The vehicles look great with the weathering.
-
Great stuff! Looking forward to seeing this develop.
-
Excellent Horrorclix repaints.
-
What a cool idea. Lovely figures selection and I luuurrve those vehicles.
-
Wonderful work so far! Your weathering on the vehicles is fantastic! I recognise two horrorclix figures
in the hospital patient row... who makes the figure on the right?
Looking forward to how this project develops! :-*
Darkoath
-
Those vehicles are magnificent! Very jealous
-
Another brilliant thread mate!
-
Thanks, chaps!
I appreciate all the encouragement, especially as this wont really take off until next year.
:)
A few of you commented on the vehicles, but I must confess that they are really easy to 'weather' using Modelmates liquids.
I picked them up at Salute last year (Soot Black is the best option) and am really glad that I did.
All you have to do is paint it on the desired area, and dab it off with a damp bit of cotton wool until you are happy with whats left.
Just that and a little bit of drybrushing for the mud and chipped paint.
Pretty easy and quick.
I recognise two horrorclix figures in the hospital patient row... who makes the figure on the right?
He is 'Zed, just Zed' from the new LAM 'Heroes and Villains' range.
Keep it up. And more zombies ;)
I feel that I will be sick of zombies by the time that this is finished!
May have to do some zombouys to break it up a little!
;)
-
Us Brits have never used the electric chair. Not civilised. Hanging, beheading, burning or cutting up into pieces is more our style (only hanging in the 20s I believe). Lovely figures and vehicles though.
-
Great vehicles and figures! :-*
-
Nice idea that, I've been considering something similar for a while, 1930's zombies, "no more tweed in hell".
Look forward to seeing how you get on with this.

I know, mate, but he will be some kind of victim from an experimental lab or somesuch.
That is my excuse and I am sticking to it... ;)

Here are a few of the figures from my Strange Aeons project who will be making the transfer over as Survivors:

A whole variety of figures with different weapon types to suitably test out the 'spawning' rules as the noise that is created by a firearm attracts more of the 'Affected'.
Playtesting can start soon...
-
Thats a nice selection of survivor characters there. Love the lady with rifle.
-
These are some really GREAT characters...the two Pistol Packing Old Guys in the first photo are my particular favorites. Getting to use them all in an alternate setting is a FINE idea. VERY WELL DONE!
-
A fascinating and interesting project, which looks like it will be well executed, from what I've seen so far. :)
I wouldn't be too down on firearms for this era either. Gun control in the UK is a more modern invention and things were a bit more lax back then; shotguns didn't need a licence and after the 1920 Act, a firearms certificate was available to anyone that the police didn't consider to be 'intemperate' or of 'unsound mind', or a 'bolshie'. The applicant had to provide a 'good reason' for possessing one and 'self defence', or planning a trip 'abroad' was considered good enough. Being a member of the right club, political party, or playing golf with the local magistrate or police inspector, and not being of the 'wrong sort' also helped oil the wheels. Even police constables on night duty were allowed to carry pistols routinely.
-
I imagine a lot of the male population would have had a good working knowledge of a rifle in the interwar years too.
Mini wise I have a soft spot for the shady briefcase fella.
-
Just out of interest Mason, how many zombies do you think you'll need for this?
-
Great stuff!!! Yes how many zombies? :-* :-* :-*
-
Great project! 8)
-
you asked about cheap storage/transport.
I've had good luck buying big sheets of 1/2 inch foam
http://www.thefoamfactory.com/packagingfoam/picknpluckcr.html
then I bought a tool box and cut the sheets to fit. I used 1 bottom sheet 2 'body' sheets and 1 top sheet for big stuff, cutting the 2 'body's sheets to fit each specific mode. I think 2 would work for your cars, 3 if needed.
I then put a piece of cardboard cut to shape with some strings on the underside. 1 bottom sheet, 1 'body' sheet, and 1 top sheet works great for 28mm minis, again, with the mini laid down and I cut around it with a sharp exacto to make a custom fit.
I tied the strings with a little bit of space around the entire thing so I could lift out the character portion. My toolbox ended up being big enough for two of these sections so I set up the strings on the bottom one to go over both so I could lift them up together. (had Warmachine jacks on the bottom, was accessing the bottom most often)
I probably have room for one more layer, but I left the 'tool carrier' in with dice pens tokens and stuff.
I'd do things slightly different in the future. I bought a big $10 plasic toolbox with 'black friday' prices
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202520712/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=toolbox&storeId=10051#.UPWCGG9EEjk
Thing is, there is a slight taper to it, and the sides are not flat but have 'architecture' to them. It was a HUGE pain cutting the foam to fit. If (when) I do it again I am going to look at the metal boxes because the extra $10 even for a bit smaller would save more than $10 in head-ache cutting and recutting and recutting each individual sheet due to the taper, inlets, grooves, and fake plastic rivets on the one I did buy.
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053&R=202796476&catEntryId=202796476#.UPWD4G9EEjk
Oh, I found when I bought foam the shipping price was such that bigger orders made more sense. Get double what you need or find someone to split it with you.
-
Looks great so far! Can;t wait to see more!!!
-
Thanks for the comments and encouragement, chaps.
It is much appreciated.
:)
Particular thanks to Arlequin for another thoughtful and in-depth response full of useful information.
You certainly are a fountain of knowledge regarding this period.

Just out of interest Mason, how many zombies do you think you'll need for this?
Great stuff!!! Yes how many zombies? :-* :-* :-*
The answer to that is: I am not sure yet.
I have ten painted and twenty ready to be assaulted by the paintbrush.
There are also another forty or so still on the sprue and ready for converting.
Until we playtest I am not sure exactly.
Hopefully not too many, but knowing me I will get carried away and do far too many... ::)
akodo:Thank you very much for the information. I am sure that anyone reading this will be appreciative.
:)
Looks great so far! Can;t wait to see more!!!
There will be plenty more soon, Uncle Mike.
I have had a bit of a break from all things gaming related for the last couple of weeks, but playtesting should commence very soon, with an AAR of the testing as soon as it has begun.
;)

Those weathered cars look ace mate!!

Salvation Army and YMCA Tea Car.

This looks great Mason, looking forward to seing these guys on the table
Eric
-
Inspired stuff mason- an original Zom-apoc setting- well done.
-
Both Vans are VERY COOL, but as soon as I looked at the Y.M.C.A. one, I had a vision of a Horde of Shuffling Zombies breaking into a Thriller-like song & dance routine to The Village People's song Y.M.C.A....it's good to start the day with a laugh.

What kind of stowage are you after?

Thanks, mate, so am I!
Playtesting should begin soon.
(As soon as I get a 'victim' or two that has some free time now that the holidays are over... ;))
Inspired stuff mason- an original Zom-apoc setting- well done.
Thanks, Rob!
I wanted an excuse to build up the Pulp Era/Strange Aeons collection as well as wanting to do a zombie horde, so this seemed the perfect solution.
Until I have to finished convert several dozen figures that is!

I am glad that made you laugh, Amigo.
To me that just sounds damn scary!
:o
Is that Patrick Moore in this picture?
It is the Not-Mr Moore from the Artizan Thrilling Tales range.
In this guise he is THE Minister of Occult Studies (England).
I have another that I am going to convert into a Tommy-gun toting survivor for this project.
;)
What kind of stowage are you after?
Basically something that can represent all the stuff that survivors of that era would be hoarding, so jerry cans, parcels, boxes etc.
I am looking for a cheap option that can easily have magnets inserted into to fix them temporarily to the vehicles as and when needed.
That way the cars can see plenty of use in other games too, minus the stowage.
-
Love the vehicles, Mason, and the miniatures, as always, are top-notch.
The whole idea for the project is one that I've been thinking of for a while - why does the zombie apocalypse always have to be in the present day? Couldn't it have happened in the 1920s or 30s? I'm doing/have started doing a 1920s zombie apocalypse project, but rather boringly it's set in the U.S. The England idea is much better! I'll be following this with interest, to see what I can borrow for my own project, but mostly just to see some nicely painted miniatures and vehicles in a nicely realized setting!

Thank you very much, Hawkeye!
The British 1920's setting was because I wanted to do something different and it seemed like a natural progression due to my Strange Aeons campaign being set in Britain at that time and already having a good basis of material to utilise.
I am interested to see what you will be doing too: Ideas, etc can be stolen both ways!
I am off work next week, so I hope to make a dent in the Zombie pile at the very least.
Playtesting will also begin then, as I can kidnap a coouple of the chaps and make them play Survivors and complain that it is too difficult until I get the balance right.... ;)

Great job matey.
And so you should, sir!
Thank you for parting with them, they will be well cared for in their new home.
I cannot take responsibility for what may happen to them when they encounter the Afflicted, though.
:D

The British 1920's setting was because I wanted to do something different and it seemed like a natural progression due to my Strange Aeons campaign being set in Britain at that time and already having a good basis of material to utilise...
I'm very slowly trying to put something similar together - dual use VBCW and Cthulhu, utilising some Irish Civil, SCW, and gangster figs, with a strong emphasis on Jeeves and Wooster (and some friends) travelling about battling Hounds of Tindalos while foiling the plans of Roderick Spode. Or 'Professor Plum versus the Nazis of Kadath Parva' as I put it once.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one taking the inter-war years in strange directions. You're an inspiration the already unhinged, sir!
-

lol
Well, it makes sense to me.
Using the same group of figures you can tie in just about any Pulp-type adventure too.
;)
-
And they had some style back then too.
-
Will be great to hear the results of playtesting. Have you found/done suitable stowage yet?
Is there going to be different types of the 'Affected' with different types of traits or all of them are just same shambling mass?
-
Will be great to hear the results of playtesting. Have you found/done suitable stowage yet?
To be honest, I have not tried too hard as I have taken a bit of a break from all of my projects for a few weeks.
I am off next week, so hopefully get some playtesting done and no doubt that will kickstart my enthusiasm.
Is there going to be different types of the 'Affected' with different types of traits or all of them are just same shambling mass?
As i will be using the existing Strange Aeons rules with a twist, there will be several different types of 'Affected' in play, including some that have not seen 'official' release yet, along with an idea or two of my own.
;)
-
Love the Bentleys, you will have to get an Wolf Barnarto (can't remember the spelling...),a chap who raced Bentleys in the period, and who has a very cool name ;) 8)
-
Superb looking vehicles Mason, nicely weathered.
-
The Strange Aeons crossover makes sense - it always helps if you can double-up and get extra use out of minis and terrain. Looking forward to hearing how the playtesting goes!
As for my own State-side 1920s zombie apocalypse project - I'm hoping to use the LPL7 to get some minis (and maybe some terrain!) painted, so fingers crossed (although, not, obviously, while I'm trying to paint...).
-
Black Cat Bases have few suitcases/luggage items, I think those would look spiffy as magnetised "stowage" for your survivors' vehicles. And since you have started sculpting, you could make several other items in similar vein, eg. travel boxes etc?

With much admiration to the man himself and many apologies to anyone whom this might offend.
This is my version of the man himself Sargent Alfred Knight the only member of the Post Office Rifles to be awarded a VC in WW1

He shall be leading my team in a very British zombie apocalypse.
God help all, living or dead, who try to stop the mail getting through.

Thanks, James!
The Modelmates stuff was being sold at Salute last year on a stand that was doing demos of the whole range.
I guess they were representing the company itself.
It is highly recomended, as it is so easy to use.

I agree, another stroke of genius from smokezombie!

Cheers Mason and Blackwolf. After reading about him while looking up post uniforms it seemed a bit to good to not include him. I have painted another mini in uniform to accompany him on his rounds ( and have some more that I'm itching to get my mits on...cheers again Mason old chap) but to be fair.. well.. she looks a bit like she fell asleep smoking a cigar...so im working on another lass ( non uniform this time)...the adventurous lady Penny Black.

Nice one, Dave! I've known a few grumpy posties in my time who would definitely be a bit handy against the undead...
-
Took my time to reply to all of this goodness, but Grand it is for certain! 8)
It won't be long before I take up the DM hat once again, so my Interbellum project will sally forth once more, and your excellent work here is some top notch inspiration!
You've showcased the possibilities of the Modelmates products well enough for me to contemplate getting some as well. You make a convincing case, sir... ;)
And I'm not the only one who has master plans for using his minis in all matter of settings, now am I? :D Keep it up; we'll prove that the interwar years are not dead yet. Well, at least not entirely alive at any rate...
-
Ok, now that I'm paying attention ....AND it is later .... c'mon where's the piccies?
It is now MUCH later!
No full on AAR as I forgot to take too many pictures as we were rather involved in the rules as this was the first playtest.
Smokezombie had the dubious honour of being the first (and so far only...) one of us to attempt to lead his Survivor group to safety.
His guys and gals were all survivors from the local Post Office Sorting Depot and were playing the first scenario: Base Camp.
The Posties were looking for a 'safe' place to set up as a new home. One that could be easily defended from the roaming hordes of the Affected.
Maggits Farm should be perfect.
The only problem was that they would have to clean out the current inhabitants first!
We were using a 3x3 board, hence the masking tape marking the boundaries.
There were already almost a dozen zombies in the farm yard and most likely more in the buildings and surrounding fields.
This was not going to be easy...
smokezombie had opted to bring the group onto the board across the road from the farm, in full view of the shambling creatures in the yard, hoping to entice them forward so that the wall itself would provide a natural barrier and slow them down in order to pick them off.
At this point the camera was mostly forgotten as we tinkered with the rules for noise i.e. gunfire attracting more zombies from either the buildings or the surrounding fields.
This proved to be a careful balancing act, as at one point, the valiant posties looked like they would be overwhelmed after their gallant leader, (Sgt) Alfred Knight VC, was taken out of action in close combat!
After this, they decided to change tactics and slow down with the level of gunfire as it was just too risky making that much noise...
All in all, it was good fun and extremely tense at times.
After the use of guns was kept to a minimum, it fell to the careful 'herding' of the zombies into a confined space, followed by a nice accurate lob of a petrol-filled milk bottle, which seemed to take care of most of the problems faced by the Postal Service!
The 'zombie attraction table' has since been modified to stop guns being such a problem with their noise, and no doubt many more tweaks will follow as we work our way through the scenarios.
As it was the testing of the rules that was more important than the taking of pictures I cannot say anything else other than:- Sorry! for the rather naff report.

Due to a lack of interest from the rest of my gaming group this project has been absorbed back into my main Strange Aeons thread.
Unfortunately smokezombie was the only one suitably enthused to create a survivor group type game with me.
We may revisit it in the future when Mr smokezombie has more time as he is a very busy chap at the moment.
It will now take the form of a Black Dossier, a series of six linked missions where a team of Agents have to complete one scenario before they can progress to the next, building up to a grand finale.
Legionnaire Bert has volunteered to use his group as the guinea pigs for this and will be the main playtester.
We began this last week and the notes and a few pictures from these games are on the thread:

One of the things that arose during the first set of test games was the need for at least one spawning point, which I had not made.
I quickly knocked a simple one up yesterday, as I would rather have something visual to represent it rather than an area of empty space.
Here is a picture of it as a bit of a reward for reading all the above drivel...

This project may return in full in the future, but for now it will be absorbed in the SA thread.
Feel free to take a look.

Sorry to hear about the lack of interest in the group Mason. Good thing though that you have Bert's team to sacrifice them for science and good gaming :)
Spawning point looks very good and sinister, no need to add Tamiya Red Clear to it unless you want to turn it into a Z feeding ground as well :D
Another possible future spawning point could a crashed 1920s autobus, would prolly be good without any bodies... well, maybe one or two leaning out of the windows perhaps.

It is not a serious problem as they all still want to continue playing Strange Aeons, so the Zeds will just have to annoy them there!
Bert is only the first one who will be having problems with dead people.

I did consider that idea and may still do it as I have some vehicles left over too.
I opted for this as it is fairly generic. The only recognisable figure (barely) in that pile is a British Bobbie.
That uniform did not change too much for 100 years or so.

I like your spawning point- very good work all round. I hope I will get to see more in the future, as I have enjoyed this thread.

Thanks for the support, chaps.
It is not being abandoned completely, it is just being shortened to make it compatible with the Strange Aeons campaign.
Check out my SA thread now and then, as I will no doubt add things over time that could be used in this.
I may be able to come back to the bigger picture of a stand alone game/project later if the chaps show some interest in doing so.
:)

I like the spawn point! nice alternative to the "horde base" that I have seen used.
shame you couldn't continue this project, it was looking great.

Firstly, I love the idea and the whole ghastly appeal of the piece, Paul :-*
It's sad that your friends didn't tag along though, since I enjoy the udea and plans behind this :) Hopefully they'll lavish your idea later on when they grasp the charm of the setting (seriously, the mother of goats feels more at home in Devon) :)
