Well Crazy Viking, you do like to poke don't you.

The key building on the board will be a cornerstore, largely intact with some food still available, and a 2nd floor lodging. This could be the objective source for 2 bands of wastlanders, or a fortified defence outpost.
I found some 3mm perspex lying around which I've cut up into 6 boards. This could be doubled for more space and a larger board, not sure on that part yet. But lets work with what we have... >_> isn't that right CV.
Since Caps are the currency in fallout, i thought it would be neat to use that in game for scavaging. The problem is I don't drink, so finding the little fellas will be part of the fun. (I may need to go out more lol)
For the figures Im fielding 2 teams, a band of wastelanders/vault dwellers/Mad max by Hasselfree and a bunch of savage raiders from EM4 (they are on their way down under, wish them luck in their long hazardous journey ;)).
The plan is to glue sand/dirt on the bases, stack them in the box flat and have the top one attached to the cornerstore. Around the Cornerstore will nest some destroyed building corners and walls (thanks for the idea Viking). Ontop of this will be a removable section, which has a foam insert for the figures and an area for player tokens (read Caps)
Cheers
Matt.

Well Crazy Viking, you do like to poke don't you.
lol
Yes, he does, doesnt he?
I see we are at roughly the same stage, Constable Bertrand, with materials gathered but not too much actually started.
If that Crazy Viking hadnt been so pushy we would both be sitting there happily planning, instead of trying our hardest to look industious, wouldnt we...?
Bloody despots!
;)
-
Shhh, don't make too much noise or he will send the secret police over! lol
It seems we are Mason... and we both beat James to the post ;)
I have only just managed to cut up the perspex and glue the figures together, lol, I want them to turn out nice so am going to spend the time on them. Next step is to greenstuff the back of the chainsaw wielding maniac's hand. It was supposed to be surgically attached, o_o but that was a 'bit rich' in my books, so grabbed a plastic hand from my bits box, and got to work with the file. ;D
So, now he needs fingers again. lol
Step 2 is roughing up the plastic, giving it a good bash, then basing it. The figures too. Then i can undercoat together in one hit... if my little package arrives.
-
Looking good- Max Max is iconic Post Apoc stuff. Old School through and through. I am looking forward to seeing what you do.
-
and we both beat James to the post ;)
;D ;D ;D
Will you finish though :D
Looks promising 8)
cheers
James
-
Ha! Damn straight matey. Looks bloody brilliant even in it's planned state.
I guess I am a bit of a dag, but as long as you get yer sorry asses in gear it's all for the better. lol lol lol
-
Will you finish though :D
Aiye, that could be the problem, life is pretty full on at the moment. >_>
But thankfully to the Viking's poking I'm underway at least.
I greenstuffed some shoddy fingers onto the hand and created a shoulderpad for Joe. But broke the arm off the girl. So 2. Steps forward and one step backwards. :-[
-
The cornerstone was redesigned to be a futuristic 1950's design. I was thinking an older 1920's brick building, but decided upon concrete for the more typical fallout style. Shops are on the ground floor with a living space on level 2. The floor is removable for playability. The glass has been shattered over time in the post apocalyptic world, but scavengers have reinforced/defended the buildings access with corrugated iron.
I plan to mix a little Mad Max and Australian outback into my rendering of the world.

I found a pack of lizards in a discount shop for $3.50, they might be rad-scorpions... or just giant mutated carnivorous lizards. Pretty deadly either way lol
-
Ooooh!
This is starting to look like something special.
:-*
Now be a good chap and slow down a little.
You are making some of us look bad, ya know.
;)
-
cool beginning! Willl follow this! =)
-
Whoa Wow-hoh-ho! :o Looking very cool. Beautiful neatly cut lines. An mini architectural masterpiece in the making?
-

;)
Only because I am not painting fantastic looking ninjas at the same time Mason ;) I'm dangerously slow all told.
Thanks Lazy, hopefully it comes good.
Gents, shall I try an Aussie windmill constructed from corrugated iron? It could be moveable, just not sure why it would be in a city/town area...
-
it's been recently built by survivors and is connected to a generator...
-
The little corner-store/house has had a few more mods placed on it. Noticeably corrugated iron cladding to fill the broken window spaces to increase privacy/defence and some electrical wiring for the alleyway and a small air purifier unit. Oh and a roof.
I've started working on the backlit shop sign, and have begun painting the good guys.

Should I run gutters for the roof, it will gust be a little tricky as it's removable is all. Anyone else out there on LAF used gutters and removable floors/roofs without any troubles?
-
Ooo, that does look good :-*
Might I suggest some sort of panel line to represent the sheet material that it would be made from. If you give the building an imaginary grid on the plan view and use those for the spacings it will help it to look more realistic.
As to guttering because you have a flat sloping roof you'll only need a sow pipe at the rear, that should be sufficient. Have it start under the back of the roof and go simply down to the floor.
One last thing, the interior floor level would look better if it were raised slightly from the surroundings and having some door steps will help in that.
cheers
James
-
Very nice addictions there! The corrugated panels... how did you do that? i'm asking because i've a method, and works pretty well, but it's really heavy to punch all that surface, thus i usually use resin parts made from the first pieces:
http://www.thelazyforger.com/tutorials/shanti-building-step-one/
i'm really curious to see if you have something better to suggest ;)
-
Damn nice start! :-*
Although I'm always suspicious towards people who cut straight...

Thanks James :D
I was thinking the building would be poured concrete, so are you suggesting some lines where the timber sheet frames would have been?

Brilliant, thanks James, So If I glue it to the "wall" then it won't have any issue when I remove the roof when gaming. In that case I may funnel it into a 'loo roll' watertank. Wastelanders wouldn't want to waste precious nuclear rain would they!
One last thing, the interior floor level would look better if it were raised slightly from the surroundings and having some door steps will help in that.
Love it! It looks better in my imagination already. I will certainly put in a concrete slab floor with a step. Scenery is all in the detail, but cutting small/thin detail by hand is very difficult, so my current terrain is a bit chunky. Perhaps I should investigate lazercutting.

I wouldn't say it's 'better' Jack, but certainly quicker and easier. It's a $4.50 sheet of corrugated card from the local Discount Store. I peeled off the flat backing paper, and used the thin corrugated half. The waves are a larger scale than the ones you have crafted, but look ok I think.
Damn nice start! :-*
Although I'm always suspicious towards people who cut straight...
Thanks Silversixx!! :D It's pretty 'straight' forward really. ;) I only have 3mm-5mm foamcore, a ruled line, a cutting mat, a metal ruler and a fat/sharp box cutter. I find the large cutting surface helps to keep it straight, and starting with a light/thin cut first sets a guide for the next cut. The difficult part is cutting small holes into the foamcore >:(
-
Thanks James :D
I was thinking the building would be poured concrete, so are you suggesting some lines where the timber sheet frames would have been?
Ah, didn't know it was poured concrete. If the concrete has been skimmed then you don't need to worry about any marks or lines. Just paint it the colour that you want :)
cheers
James

Brilliant build
-
Great, thanks James. :D having just looked at your blog, and your 2012 Japanese Salute board I think I will stick the one complete house onto the board directly in the middle then have otter aspects such as road and ruin wall sections as 'floating terrain' on separate Perspex or hardboard.
Oh goodie Crazy Viking, I'm glad I'm striking near the target ;)
My friend and I are looking forward to having a game!

Ahh! Well, i've one of those sheet as well, and i used it before passing to my own resin casts. It surely works well, expecially if you don't already have the molds for the panels! ^^
-
Jack, what material did you use first to make the corrugated iron cast? Did you use foil, or lead? I see lead is one of your favourite soft metals.
Rocket Mart has been added with a neon sign, water tank and interior details. I scratch built 3 Nuka Cola vending machines from 2 layers of 5mm foamcore, a third layer of 3mm foamcore, various cardboard and thin plastic. I knocked up a quick matress by removing one side of the card backing and scribing the detail with a ball point pen. Is there a better material out there people have used? I've noticed a few out there have resin or plaster mattresses.

James, I took your advice and put in a floor with a step. I was going to use concrete AKA foamcore, but 3mm was a little thick, so I used balsa as a timber flooring instead.

Looking great, if you do not mind I might to borrow design ideas from you.:-* :-* :-*
-
Rather looking forward to seeing paint on this 8)
cheers
James
-
That looks amazing. I can never cut foam-card so accurately. I love the vending machines too. keep going.
-
:o
Now THAT is what you call progress!
:-* :-*
Great work, sir.
All the items you have cobbled together look great.
8)
As for those mattresses: An alternative option would be carving up some insulation foam.
But why you would want to, I have no idea....
Really looking forward to the next stage.

Aiye, I look forward to paint too! I have slapped some paint on... but i have been having difficulty getting a concrete texture/weathering with paint. Do you guys have any suggestions or links you'd recommend?
Jack, did you end up painting or finishing your post apoc building? I really love your 2 part build, but would like to see how you finished it. (if you did ;) )
Anpu and Rob, thanks for the encouragement. :D I find it easy to block out the build, but harder to polish it up with the details that so many builders around here are so proficient at.
-
If you are looking for a texture for concrete, try mixing some standard plaster in with the paint and using a wide brush to apply it.
Use a wet brush with just water on to spread it more evenly until you are happy with the effect and then drybrush the desired colour once fully dry.
Warning: Test on something else to practise first, until you have the hang of getting the desired effect!
;)
-
Good grief, this is so depressing - when I compare it to my own meagre (and still un-photographed) box project, that is! :o :o :o Brilliant! 8) 8)
-
This is really quite the scratch build!!!! Inspiring!
-
Thanks Mason, I will check out my wifes painting mediums and see what she has.
Crazy Viking, that's very kind, we will see how it turns out by the end :?
Cheers
Matt.

I thought I should introduce you to the citizens of A-PAPPIS-Aliptia.
Here they are.
Hasslefree and EM4 Miniatures.
They arn't alone out in the outback around Broken Hill. With the major cities being irradiated 'hot zones', the bush is the best place to find some wildlife, and make a living. The raiders migrate to soft spots of civilisation, taking whatever they can.
Order is best kept with the pointy end, and the MFP take their business seriously. A vault dweller has been spotted helping out the police on occasion, what's her story?
And Ive also been working on a Windmill. They are very basic, but important tech to provide water out in the wastes. Its been bodged out of piano wire, aluminium can, thin wire, and plastic... and lots of superglue.

There is some great brushwork on those figures, Matt.
I was going to pick out a favourite or two, but that would not be right as they are all great!
:-* :-* :-*
And that windmill is just.... 8) 8)
-
Argh! I...am...speechless.
Fan...freakin'...tastic! :o
-
This looks very interesting. I am looking forward to seeing it finished.
-
Love the miniatures! The windmill is great too (especially the wheathering on the sails and the vegetation), though it looks as if the stanchions could be a bit more tensioned. That's complaining on a rather high level, though ;) Great work, seriously!
-
Wonderful paintjobs and scratchbuilding!
What will the mill power?!
-
In Oz, these windmills are used to pump artesian water.
When I was first married (over 40 years ago), we relied on a windmill for water to supply the house we lived in and we weren't far from the city centre! :)
-
Oh my :-*
-
Great stuff :-*
cheers
James
-
Love those figures! Nice, rich colour, well-applied! Great choice of heroes too :D
-

Thanks Paul, I tried my hand at layering for the first time. I found the models detailed, but with flatter surfaces than the GW, which needed more careful painting than "base-wash-base-highlight". I think it worked well on the Lone Wanderer.. even Max. I learned that it is tricky to blend the layers like the Pro's (read Captain Blood's HYW, Blackwolf's, Blue VT....)
Fan...freakin'...tastic!
It's a windmill, not a fan. But I am glad you are! ;)
This looks very interesting. I am looking forward to seeing it finished.
:? Me too! Hope it does. ... I need more PVA/White Glue.

Thanks Zafarelli! I love your rust work, so I will take the weathering as a compliment. They do look a little saggy for a 'maintained' 'mill. I will check out what I can do.
Wonderful paintjobs and scratchbuilding!
Thanks Dr Viking! Glad you approve of the post apocalypse setting. :D Poiter50 is correct, its a water pump. Though I do not have a watertank for it to feed.
Oh my :-*
Great stuff :-*

Thanks guys. You all have been very kind with comments. I wanted to show you all some good images of what I've been working on, so took some while to get them together. Your encouragement and CC is very warmly received. What a great place this LAF is!
Cheers
Matt.

Life has thrown up a busy month and I haven't had much painting/building time as of late. But, there has been some progress.
My friend and I have settled on a fallout themed version of scavenge skirmish survive and thus I have been working on graphics and details for the game cards. I could post a revised pdf of the printout section if people ate interested. It's still untested but hopefully we will see a intro game in the next week or two.
Cheers
Matt.

I organised my friend to come and try out the game last night. He had already painted his warband, so yesterday I spread out my workbench, wrote a to do list, and got cracking. It's at a suitable gaming level, but it could do with a little more. Suggestions? Giant pigeon poo? Rad scorpion tunnels? The rest of the township?
My greatest challenge yesterday was basing the game boards. Since I had a 12 hour window to glue and paint, my usual preference for white glue was substituted for a new combo. Spray adhesive - sand - spray adhesive - sand - spray adhesive - White undercoat spray paint - Paint - drybrush. Ive found it to be much quicker and the layers create a plastic like thin surface. It sticks less well to the black perspex (perhaps i should have sanded it first) but is a flatter surface with smaller detail than excessive use of white glue, which has a more 'muddy' like surface. anyway, enough yapping... some pictures. I took these today, and there was a little cloud cover so the shadows are nice and diffused. Please forgive the spots on images, my camera sensor needs a clean.

The windmill has been based since last time. It's tricky to paint under the wires, I didn't think of that when I was building it.

And then all packed up to slide into a Pappis box. The windmill vanes are removable to aid storage. Hopefully they wont break >_>

And finally, I've modified the SSS rules to create some fallout themed items, events and characters. We don't have laser/plasma weapons yet or power armour. I picked up some Tamiya 28mm gas tanks, (can you believe a jerry can is a 3 piece kit?! It required tweezers to put together! lol) and some Discount store lizards sub in for Rad Scorpions.
Battle images to come, but we played two short games of Scavenger Skirmish Survive, and lets just say though there was a lot of scavenging, there was not much surviving! Bodies and items littered the board.
Game one between raiders and wastelanders saw guns opened up from turn one, a child was killed, the store was raided, and the last wastelander decided to run away rather than face certain death. Leaving the raiders to pick through the debris.
Game Two saw a tentative start as gang A scavenged everything they could, while gang B was without ammo and under attack from 3 rad scorpions. After that it was a calm affair as more rummaging happened, ... until Gang B found some ammo. Then they started shooting instantly killed a chap from Gang A, he was revived with a new found stim pack, before turning the tables and took out gang member after gang member. The funniest moment occurred when the small boy in Gang B tripped going down the stairs and became immobile for the rest of the game. He was the last Gang B member alive, and was almost pardoned... but after a short affair with a chainsaw, a little more loot come gang A's way.
SSS is setup for sneaking, and hiding. An open - small board is difficult to get into a 'safe' place. I may need some more rubble/structures.
Cheers
Matt

Wow! What a cool project.
Nice paintjobs, terrain and cards.
:-*
I love the way you painted your EM-4 minis.
-
Brilliant stuff. Really well made and painted. I will look forward to a game report. I agree a few more bits of scatter terrain would be nice, may be some piles of rubbish and burned out cars.
Over all, it looks great.
-
Simply bloody awesome.
Perhaps a couple of cargo containers, I did see some on a KS IIRC? Could be packed in the top floor? Or some skips?
-

Thanks Rob and Poiter. :) I wonder what will fit inside the building to store it all? Cars, containers and barricades? I could put the cards/dice in a shipping container if it fits...
I just posted a short battle report here: http://makeandpaint.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/scavenging-but-not-much-surviving.html (http://makeandpaint.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/scavenging-but-not-much-surviving.html)

Thanks Aggro. Fallout wikia has all sorts of stuff on it ;)
I loved your last wee Aggro battle report, it looked as bloody as mine, but yours had some sneaking. :D
-
Amazing! !!!!

Cracking little set up :-* :-*
cheers
James
-
Cool concept and impressive delivery :D
-
That's a fantastic amount of work alround!! :o :o
-
:o
That is all seriously impressive, mate!
The attention to detail with the walls, interiors, graffitti etc, really brings it to life.
:-* :-* :-*
And, yep, I agree: You need more stuff.
Just so that we can all dribble over new posts on this thread.
:D
Do it!
-
I'm so impressed! This is a beauty and very inspiring for the rest of us failures not participating in the challenge :)
Good job!
-
Great job! 8)
Very cool (in a hot, dusty, irradiated way!) :D
Also, I like what you've done with the SSS rules as well. You're right that the open is a dangerous place and so plenty of cover and shelter from others and from the weather (in your game presumably the effect of sun/heat/radiation replaces snow/cold/blizzard?) will improve the likelihood of survival. I'll answer the specific questions on the SSS thread later, when I can type into a pc rather than tap into a phone! ;)
-
Oh, and I agree with Rob..... Burned out cars and piles of rubbish will provide some small but useful pieces of cover. Did you see the rusty Porsche that Dr The Viking made for his board?
-
Brilliant!
I agree with Steve on the others, more trash and burnt out cars, ir also adds a lot to the apocalypse feel.
I wish I had your skill/eye for scratchbuilding, as it would make it so much easier to finish my projects :)
-
Cracking little set up :-*
Thanks boys. It only just fits in the box, which is the main challenge at this point. What else can I fit in??? I am glad it seems to work. It looks a little basic to my eye when compared to all your amazing pieces. Any further tips for sand/dirt/scatter from any postapoc veterans? My first apoc foray seems ok but needs more bling.
As you can see from the battle report I bought some dinky cars from Blighty via evilbay. You can pick up broken ones for a bit of a steal, but they are a bit big unfortunately. So, I have 4 large cars, they just didn't provide enough cover.
Great job!
I'll answer the specific questions on the SSS thread later, when I can type into a pc rather than tap into a phone! ;)
We had irradiated nuclear winds, so a little duck and cover in a nearby auto was required in turn 2, haha. We thought 4 people could shelter in one car, as the only structure stood in the middle of the board with only a few characters being able to reach it. Lol.

The pale color schemes of all your terrain really looks amazing, The whole thing is like a work of art. It really draws you into the little world you created. I am very impressed!
:-*
Thanks Aggro. Fallout wikia has all sorts of stuff on it ;)
I loved your last wee Aggro battle report, it looked as bloody as mine, but yours had some sneaking. :D
Thanks, glad you liked my batrep!
The Fallout wiki is pretty cool. There's a lot of great images for painting schemes in there.

I have been squeezing some ruins into my Pappis box. Here are my WIP with base colours and a little weathering. Details arn't finished yet.

Need to put up some detail, paint some graffiti, posters, and a light sprinkling of rubble/basing.

I like the designs and general weathering. Only point of feedback is the rust. It might be the bright light, but it seems too much like blood. It needs to be darker/grittier.

Looking good, they fit well with the rest 8)
I would say the rust needs to be more orangey :)
cheers

Nice work, mate.
I love the peeling paint on the door.

The rust eh? Darker generally and brighter orange at the really oxidized points. Cheers gents!
Ah cheers Paul. I like the doors too, so may have to have more of them coloured, rather than 'stained'. My work has me plodding around old original 1950's-70's fibro/concrete houses. Some of the garden sheds and outside dunnies provide particular inspiration for very basic, and very weathered post apocalyptic builds. Today's concrete shed had a beautiful light teal paint job which had faded and was lightly rubbed back to concrete in areas. That may get used in one of these concrete monstrosities. ;)
Cheers
Matt
