Nazi zombies and werewolves led by demented and scantly clad gals fighting heavily armored US soldiers who are wielding heavy machineguns and blowing bubbles with chewing gum? Yep that's Incursion in a nutshell. The game which have been in hiatus over the past year is heading for a re-release and update. Jim Bailey is back at the helm and intends to breathe life into the game once again.
Here's the message from Jim on the Grindhouse Games Facebook page:
...
"Okay, let's open it up. Let's just kick the door down and get right into it, shall we? John Roberts and I are heading up a re-release of Incursion. Yeah, it's gonna be a Kickstarter. Cat's out of the bag now! If only I had that tool when I first set out to do this thing.. The game maintains a stratospheric 8 out of 10 on Board Game Geek and has a die-hard fanbase. Why? It's a damned good game and it's authentic. Don't take my word. Go read all the reviews, Go see what folks like Michael Barnes and Superfly Pete at Fortress Ameritrash have to say about it. Go see what Anatoli has to say about it. Go to the Grindhouse forums and read about it.
Though a world-class cast of artists and designers participated throughout two print runs and the SNAFU expansion, this was all funded initially by the sale of my golden-age comic book collection and thousands of wargaming figs I had painted. Now that we have Kickstarter, we can finally knock this deal up into the clouds where it belongs and shank evil monopoly big distribution at the same time.
Plastic: the holy grail. It's what we always wanted to do. Just never had the hundred grand up front we needed. Yeah, lots of boardgamers bought the game and played with cardboard standups and LOVED IT. Lots of miniature lovers bought the metal because it's heavy, hard, and beautiful and built their own 3d boards. We're going to keep/expand the metal line but also convert everything to boardgamer-friendly and horde-builder plastic. We have new missions, new models, and all sorts of other stuff planned. Metalheads and previous purchasers rejoice: we will craft the Kickstarter such that you can get ONLY the new stuff if you wish, and/or just go whole-hog and gorge yourself on plastic.
Though the game is a re-release with lots of new add-ons, upgraded components, MUCH higher quality print stock ,new art, and PLASTIC, getting to Kickstarter is still unfortunately a couple of months away. It's alot of work to plan and execute "one of the big ones". I hope you will join us for the ride.
Jim Bailey

Sounds interesting even though I never dipped into Incursion the first time found (even though we play SOTR), speaking of which will this new release tie in to SOTR in any way as it's set in the same universe is it not and they share miniatures?
-
They share the universe but are developed by two different companies. West Wind does Secrets of the third Reich and will have a Kickstarter of their own later this year for a version 2 of the rules, while Grindhouse Games has always done Incursion.
The rules for SoTR were written with the help of Jim and John Bailey who are the guys behind Grindhouse Games but they have since moved on to other things and at the moment Jim is keeping to Incursion while SoTR is being developed by John Roberts and a couple of other guys along with Andy Cooper over at West Wind.
If we go by how things have worked in the past, then whatever is released for Incursion will most likely end up having rules to be used in SoTR as well.
-
Really pleased to see Incursion getting a re-boot, loved the game & eagerly await new scenarios & units. I'm curious to see what the plastics turn out like, as I never bought the US minis for the game, (I play British & Germans in SotTR & lovely as they are, didn't want to start a US force) but if there's a pledge level that covers them (& perhaps one for a second board) I could be persuaded to unchain the wallet & distract the budget monster.
-
I'll keep my eye on this then if the units will possibly make an appearance in SOTR as I'll pick up the Germans.
-
This year just keeps getting better and better!
-
Nice to see what Jim comes up with. Not spoke with him for ages. Probably the best way for Grindhouse to go being honest.

Love the poster, I do hope it will be available as an add on/bonus for the KS campaign.
With the re-release of this game has finally got me painting my two starter sets again, along with building my two 3d boards based on the early map you sent me with such goodies as the twins bedroom, barracks, white room and oubilette. I will post up ptrogress reports once I have made a reasonable amount of progress.
Cheers

So, in anticipation of a successful campaign, we're planning stretch goals, as you might imagine. Something we've always wanted to do is model a German reinforcement of Gibraltar with airborne forces. West Wind has graciously granted us permission to use the Luftwaffe Drop-Armor concept. If this campaign shoots the moon, we'll be that much closer to a massive redesign/rerelease of 1949: Secrets of the Third Reich. In the bowels of Gibraltar, the Kraut Paras are a mirror image of the Lucky 7th with some tweaks. What I'm hoping is that you folks could help us with the Fallschirmjager commander, Slugger Murphy's nemesis.
The figure below was sculpted by Andy Cooper and painted by Jim Bailey. We'll be bringing them up to date with new artwork and sculpt.(http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0022/6852/files/droptrooper.jpg?37)

With or without twin chainguns?
How about Twin-Twin chainguns.
-
How about Twin-Twin chainguns.
Quad chain guns. got it. We'll have to have a teleport device that gets the ammo from a massive storage location to the hopper as needed as there's no way a chasis will be able to bear that much weight. What about rocket launchers?
-
What about rocket launchers?
Never enough rocket launchers, perhaps Rocket Launcher Firing Chainguns.

A Drop trooper with a Panzerfaust multi-launcher?!? :o :o :o FINALLY?!? OH PLEEEEEEZE! PLEEEEEEEZE! :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

This is great stuff. Guys, you need to have a word with the West Wind team to promote the benefits of supporting this Kickstarterfor SOTR2. It's like a Ghost town on their forum/Facebook page.:(

Debate is on at our facebook page. In brief: should we make plastic and metal minis of our new sculpts or just plastic? Head on over there and be heard.

Awesome! I like that loads!

I know Incursion is a separate game but please keep the scale similar to SOTR. Paddy and his commandoes are absolutely huge and seem really out of scale compared to the West wind stuff for SOTR. Just something to consider. ;)

Sorry, I'm going to have to come down on the other side of that, the current incursion range scales really well with my Dust figures, so I'd like the new figures to be the same scale they are now.
-
Just shows how off the scale was for the two games! :)
-
As someone who is watching this with great interest and anticipating the kickstarter now that I have spotted this - I would say to try and keep it to 28mm, not the DUST scale which isn't the same at all.
It means people have more variation in what they can adapt the game to include.

Message from Jim:
Here's some more fun Blitzhund art. We should be able to start revealing box covers for Incursion and SNAFU as well as final poster, soon. Also, there is some character art, models being sculpted by Jason Weibe and Pat Keith, and a movie trailer on the way. Stay tuned. It's going to start getting really nuts around here.

Jim mentioned that they'll be going for Zombicide style plastic for the miniatures in the boxed game, has anyone got any experience working/painting these?

And SNAFU is going to be an expansion box instead of a book. here's the cover:

Check out some of the examples of painted Zombicide figures in various threads in the Post-Apoc section of this forum. The plastic figures appear to paint up rather well.

I've painted and re-based most of a zombicide box and it's not a bad material to work with, but it's not great either. It's more solid than you would think, with less flex than say WOTC star wars figures, I didn't find a whole lot of flash and what was there was easy to remove. The big downside is that the material doesn't hold as much detail as metal, traditional plastic or restic.
I would imagine it's the classic trade off of quality and cost. The current metal figures are wonderful, but so expensive, that it costs $140 for the minimum number of metal figures on top of the cost of the game. Hopefully with the lower cost of the plastic Grindhouse can get the whole package under $100 and still have decent quality on the figures.

Plastic MI-13....Awsome

Just when I think I've had enough Kickstarters....
THE KEEP PULLING ME BACK IN!

Dude, Incursion truly rocks. My sole complaint about the game was the "bling" factor...the cardboard standies from the first printing were great as far as gameplay goes, it made detecting facings more obvious, but the toy factor was missing. That's what made Space Hulk a better game than it. But now....yeah, it's going to be the best corridor shooter ever.
Regarding the plastics - if you brush on thin varnish and then spray with acrylic dullcote (or Krylon) before you paint them up, the models become almost as good as working with metal. Very stiff, adhesion is great, and they come out pretty good. The one advantage I think that these plastics have is that you can "make them your own" by changing the poses on the extremities with nothing more than some hot then cold running water.
The Reaper stuff is brilliant in that regard as well.
-
Check it out! It's the APE prototypes! Now, due to the process the plastic minis will be about 5% smaller than the metal minis. We will be maintaining the metal lines!
-
Looks like it's the same Material as for the DUST miniatures. I hope I'm wrong though, as I'm definitely out if that's the case.
-
It's the softer pvc plastic.
-
All 12 sturmzombie prototypes and the final artwork for the poster. A small version of the poster will be made available during Gencon at the Bombshell Babes booth. The full 30"x42" poster will be part of the kickstarter campaign.

Does that mean that all of the miniatures in the box will be 5% smaller than the metal line?
If that is the case then it's a bit worrying I think. If I wanted to buy another unit of APE's and went for the metal ones they'd be larger . . . . . :?
-
Does that mean that all of the miniatures in the box will be 5% smaller than the metal line?
First it's not a mandatory 5% smaller. There's a bit of shrinkage in the plastic manufacturing of up to 5% of the original. So yes your plastic APEs would be slightly smaller than your metal ones. Shave down the base on the plastics so they can slip into the recess of the rounded 30mm bases and that'll easily make up the difference from a height standpoint. That being said, we'll be providing plenty of APEs in the boxed set itself for Incursion so you shouldn't need to purchase more for the game.
-
When are you looking to launch the KS and how long will it run?
-
Early August, 30 days. We then anticipate fullfilment 6 months afterwards (early to mid March)
-
Sounds good to me, I can't wait to see what else is in the campaign

We've got the latest revision of the box art for both Incursion and SNAFU in a nice side by side shot. Notice the word SNAFU in bright colors!

Even though I said I was all kickstarted out...you might have me on board. I love the look of what you've showed so far!
-
Are we going to be seeing any new and interesting characters to come along.

Really happy this is happening, One of the best board games ever! Never really got the attention it deserved.
I'm not doing much gaming atm but I will NEVER sell my full Incursion set.

New, yes. Interesting, Sweet Jesus I hope you guys find them interesting. We've spent enough time on them!

I like the graphics for the KS. Can't wait for it to start. Will it be next weekend?
Is there any chance we can see some size comparison shots of the new plastic minis? I would be particularly be interested in shots next to Dust Tactics minis.
Hope we smash the 700K goal in not time!

We're shooting for Aug 7.

The Rosie picture? Why couldn't that be displayed here?

It would be the object that her left foot is resting on. Not sure that's ok here.

If you could block out the text and the swastika, you should be fine posting here.

Ah, I keep forgetting about that.

Any idea on the postage costs for UK/Europe with this KS as we always seem to get stung with a heavy shipping charge? West wind did free shipping on their KS but not sure if we'll be that lucky?;)
-
Cropped photo of Rosie so it's safe for the forum. Postage will vary depending on pledge level (there is a pledge level with free shipping)
without further ado:
Here are the cards for the Kickstarter Exclusive Character Pack #1. First time you've seen Nigel in full color and also the first time you've ever seen Brigitte.

similar material, harder plastic

Judging by the end products from studio Mcvey I hope these will be of sufficient quality. As they will be smaller than yhe existing minis will you be looking to replace the old metal figures or do these still sit with Wendy and Andy?
Cheers

KICKSTARTER LAUNCHES ON AUGUST 1st!

Also, Incursion: The T-Shirt!

Any chance that when you transition from metal to plastic you can increase the diameter of the bazooka tube on the bazooka armed APE? The rocket he holds on my metal version wouldn't fit in the tube.

Hmm, after seeing the Box Contents I can only say that I love the new stuff (artwork etc.).
BUT - is there new content rulewise planned?
Or is it a true re-release and all that are happy with the 1st Edition have no real incentive to jump at the KS?
-
Well, there are the 4 new missions and the new characters, but we have a pledge levels for old hands so they can just get the new stuff. That is, unless you just want the brand new boxed sets...

Also have you completely artistically split from Andy and Wendy now?
Commander Vyper, not really understanding the question. Let me answer what I think you're asking: Incursion has always had a different aesthetic from what could be found in the SoTR rulebook. Do you own a copy of Doomsday? You can see where Incursion artwork was utilised for those units that appear in both systems. Now Grindhouse and West Wind haven't discussed artwork in SoTR 2 but I wouldn't be suprised if, space permitting, we recycled some of this new crop. Does that answer your question?
-
Sorry I wasn't being clear. I've known Jim and Wendy & Andy for quite while now so aware of the directions that differ etc.... what I was asking was where is the relationship between grindhouse and Westwind currently? A parting of the ways I have to assume or are they collaborating at a ll
-
We still collaborate quite a bit. One of our stretch goals will be new drop armor. They still make our metal minis. We are dedicated to getting SoTRII out once we're done with our Incursion rerelease and they have EoTD all sculpted and shipped. Incursion has always been a mainly Grindhouse project but has fed back to SoTR as much as it has borrowed. At least I like to think so.

How long do you think it will take to get the Mini's seperately. I'm thinking of Pledging but I'm a bit strapped for cash when I probably won't be using most of the Germans, Brits etc.

I was confused by that too.
An update went out last night that makes it a little clearer. Sort of.
Good evening and welcome to update #1.
Looks like we are off to a really incredible start! I don't think any of us at Grindhouse knew what to expect. I have to say however that we are very very pleased :-D. Thank you all so very much for your belief in us. You'll forgive us for setting such a high initial funding goal. Anything less is just farcical for a project of this magnitude. We're closing in on it pretty fast, though! Let's hit it and get along down the road to unlock some stretches...
The rest of this message is directed primarily at our OG fans though I think it might give all of you new folks a little insight into our culture at the Grindhouse.
Your engagement with us over the last 24 hours has been critical. Incursion is different than many of the other game Kickstarters out there in that it serves a fairly broad range of interests: From hardcore mechanics junkies who could care less about what it looks like to serious connoisseurs of high-quality miniatures and graphic design and everything in between. Our previous releases over the years catered to each of you almost individually with the separate metal miniatures, free print and play, etc. We had some awesome discussions today about this. Thanks in particular to Brandon Massengill and Jim Slade for leading the charge and helping us hammer through some difficult problems. To better serve you guys, we're adding some new options to get as close to a Chinese menu as possible and still retain our sanity (and financial well-being) here at the Grindhouse. We are still taking survey info on the desire for die-cut cardboard standups for SNAFU so weigh in. It's a pretty big ticket item so we need a big number of folks to indicate interest. New options are as follows. These will take effect tomorrow. Need more time to create graphics.
2 new pledge levels
SNAFU- includes SNAFU, Exclusive Gretel figure (plastic), and applicable freebies/upgrades (per Double Feature), shipped to your door in the USA.
$60 +$30 shippingoutside USA
OG in Plastic-just like Metalhead, but in plastic.
$65 + $30 shipping outside USA
Buckets of Blood allows switch of Exclusives to metal if you want that for some reason. Can't change the language of the pledge level but this is official.
New add-ons:
SNAFU $60. Add $30 for shipping outside USA
APE Set- Ape set from Incursion in plastic. No cards. $25
Incursion core figures- Ape set plus Gretel, Ilsa, Hans, 2x Bomberzombie, Blitzhund in plastic. No cards. $40
SNAFU core figures- MI-13 set including Gracie, Panzeraffe, Drohne, Bazooka APE in plastic. No cards $40
We'll draw and announce the winner of the Facebook competition tomorrow so stay tuned! I gotta go get a good solid night's sleep now after days of sleepless preparation so I'll catch you cats in the morning :-) Unfortunately, I have an actual job I have to go to. Thanks again from John and me for a fantastic day!
Im looking for the plastic figures for the base game plus SNAFU, plus as many of the characters as I can feasibly get. I am still unclear if there is a pledge level that will suit me.

Latest news:
European fulfillment! Done deal! We just came to an agreement with West Wind in the UK. Alas, between customs fees, import duties , VAT, courier fees, and West Wind's handling fees and overhead, we can't offer a discount on international shipping but you pay NO CUSTOMS DUTIES! We take a hit but it's not too bad. We can live with it. Can y'all help us get the word out?
Game Play video: Okay, okay! We hear you. We're working on one. It'll probably take us a week or so but hang tough. It's coming.
Multiple Pledge levels: pledge as many times as you want at any level you want by adding to your pledge amount. You'll get the stretches for all levels you pledge at. International shipping needs to only be added once, no matter how many different base pledge levels you want. You will notice that it is possible to pledge at SNAFU and Grinder and get more stuff than at Double Feature. This is a hole in the system created by our desire to more fully serve existing fans and our inability to modify existing pledge levels once they are active. We hope you will work with us and just pledge what you need. We will not stop you from pledging whatever you want (or even judge you) but we're hoping you understand.
Pledge Calculator: We're working on one! Again, it may take some time but it's coming.
Alternate t-shirts and add-on dice: When we get to 600 backers, we'll do an alternate t-shirt design. Maybe a poll or something. Haven't decided yet. We'll also put up the special dice as an add-on.

Will it still be thirty bucks shipping for the Pack of APEs (To Australia) and would we get seperate packs of Miniatures before the game comes out or would we have to wait for a couple months.

Bubbles,
Shipping's all standardized to $30 international (except for Buckets of Blood). Everything except for posters and t-shirts will ship at the same time. Know of anyone else who's pledged? Maybe pool an order?
