Ever since I started my Pyrate project, I wanted to have a proper model of a kraken.
Not a tiny little one, but a monstrous one that would be capable of dragging a complete ship under the sea!
Thing is, I searched high and low and Kobblestone from Canada would be the only ones producing a big sea-monster, although that one is some kind of fish. Reaper have brought out a really nice large scale version of their Goroloth but it is more a display model with no gaming value.
My kraken should be some kind of a waterline model with separately-based arms emerging from the sea so that you can actually play with it. I faintly remember a thread by a fellow LAFer that went in a similar direction but I cannot remember who it was.
Then a certain viking friend of mine mentioned that it would be great to have one in one of the annual games they play up there in the North. Sadly, RL prevented that I finished it in time, but Gubbspel Galore in Gothemburg is coming up and I really want the kraken to appear there on my Pyrate table. I could as well have put this in the Pyrate thread but the sculpture is some kind of a small project in itself, so I decided to start a new one for this. The pictures are quick snapshots made on the fly.
I started by sculpting a tentacle. The suction cups nearly killed me... o_o
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/14/173_24_07_13_10_03_26_3.jpg)
This tentacle is about 35cm long. The mighty Zafarelli has agreed to make 8 castings of that one which I will then heat up and bend so that they appear in writhing motion. The tentacles will emerge from the water in varying lengths so i Probably will not need all of it. But I wanted it to be that long, dammit!
A month of time passed with practically nothing happening regarding that creature. In the meantime, I have one resin casting of it and bent it. I was a bit sceptical at first, but it worked. Sadly, I have no proper picture of it available right now, so this will have to wait.
Today I had an hour or two of nothing to do except for hanging around in the garden, so I thought that i could as well start sculpting on the beast.
I took out a ceramic tile and bulked out a basic shape with aluminium foil.
I then covered it with Sculpey...
...and built up volume here and there...
My son generously donated the eyes for it...
...looks a bit like a dog, not a kraken... ::)
My doubts went away when I added some kind of eyelids:
...but not completely.
I stepped back and had a coffee. The eyes of a kraken are more on top of its head than on the side. So I changed this:
There still is a lot to be done, but one can already see the direction in this is going. I will post some additional pictures as soon as I can show more.
:)

Lovely Karsten!
I do look forward for more. I mean "Moar"...

I tried making one out of bits of scrap foam I had. It doesn't look anywhere near as good as yours though! Great work man!!
I don't know if this is any help..

Oh, boy, this is going to be crazy 8-) can't wait the progress.

Thanks for the nice comments, chaps! :)
Andym, your thread is most inspiring. To this day I am still enthusiastic about the Underwater adventure you guys pulled off at BLAM!
-
Looking pretty damn good so far!
-
Yeah!
The squid is alive!
lol
-
That's a great start, it looks really good. I'm looking forward seeing how this turns out.

Looking great so far.
Following this with much enthusiasm.
Oh, YES!
:D

Looking very good. Hopefully we will see the Kraken at next years Åcon.

I knew I'd seen something somewhere that might help....

No? Nevermind, it's still very, very cool! Looking forward to the next leg.

EXCELLENT START! The thing that I most admire about your miniatures is the WONDERFUL expressive personalities they all possess. How you will achieve this with a Kraken will be a process worth following closely. Egro, keep up the FINE WORK!

That's the whole idea :)

Thanks again for the enthusiasm, guys! :)
Dr Zombie: Åcon was the reason I started this thing. I was just not able to finish it in time for this year. Should I not be able to attend next year, I will make sure that the other Dr. has the beast at his disposal to harrass you lot! :D
AndyM, yup, that thing is unbelievable. They have a documentary on how they did it on Massive Voodoo. Stunning. The ship has been built totally from scratch... :o
DeafNala, thanks for the nice words! I can only return the compliment as it always is over-the top stuff with lots of character like yours that keeps one inspired!
Ah, and those two Scandinavians in the back, stop jabbering! ;)
Meanwhile I adjusted the pose of the tentacles a bit in order to make it more plausible. I have temporarily stuck the first resin-tentacle to the tile to show you guys where this is going:
Man, imagine that there will be eight of them in different poses!
Sadly, I forgot to place my standard scale-reference miniature next to it so far, but in the next photos I won't.
Before I go to bed, I will start adding some texture to the head...
More to follow soon.

Yes, I'm a bit disappointed, too. Now that he collected all 8 tentacles yesterday in the evening, I had expected to see them all bent in wriggling shapes by now ;)
-
He's probably still up fondling them... and have forgotten why! lol

Folks, as soon as Zafarelli gave me seven straight tentacles on Friday night, my thoughts really went astray.
When I saw this,
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/14/173_28_07_13_7_56_11_0.jpg)
I immediately thought of this:
;D
I spent the evening playing around with the sculpt of the head, refining it here and there and adding more skin texture still. Nothing to show as I am using up my skin-coloured Sculpey with this project. As this stuff is a bit transparent, it photographs like hell. Well, the amount I have will be used up when I finished this and after that, it's the brilliant grey stuff again. The next sculpts will photograph better, promised! :)
On saturday, I finally bent the tentacles in
wriggling shapes
and cut them to the desired lengths:
There are some leftovers I somehow do not want to throw away but have no use for whatsoever. If you drop me a PM, I'll send them to you just for fun:
I spent Saturday night finishing the sculpt and finally baked it this afternoon. Here are some pictures, hope you like them:

In a game, the tentacles would have to be stuck to the gaming surface with blue tack or something similar. Each tentacle would then be used as a single miniature with individual stat as Dr. The Viking thought out a while ago. Thing is, I don't even know if I would use this one in a game! lol
Next will be some rather boring steps of casting and stuff. I will come back as soon as there is something that can be shown again.
Hope you liked this, stay tuned for more...!

Send me one of the surplus bits for a fishmonger's stand lol

;D
Although all your pics look very cool - I really love this on! ;D
-
Surely basing the tentacles and the head separately would be less fiddly for a game than Blu tac? I'm sure you could make some really cool, choppy waves as if they're bursting out of the water! Treat the different parts as characters of a 'squid' crew. Each with its own hits and stuff!
-
That's just stone cold genius, can't wait to see it with a coat of paint :-*
-
Have you thought about hollowing out the skull to get some very weak LED in behind the Eyes to make them glow? Oh, and jolly najs work. Unbelivably well sculpted.
-
Splendid 8)
To follow on from Andy's suggestion, would clear bases be suitable?
cheers

Wot he said, clear bases?
-
Clear hex bases could be really cool. The tentacle could just rise out of the round bit in the middle. But I also like the idea of having them look like they're coming out of a choppy wave. Loads of work, I know but it could look stunning :D :D
-
SPECTACULAR! That is a BRILLIANT creation...VERY WELL DONE!
-
Thanks chappesses and chaps!
I am afraid I will have to go for the base-less approach as time is short... :(
I will simply attach the tentacles with black tack to the water surface.
I agree that sculpted bases with splashing water would be the coolest solution, but what can you do?
I finally have a full day of painting and to top it off, I am sitting in the garden. Man, this is the life...! ;D
So far I am about halfway through...

As much as I like your depiction of the Greek ship of state fatally strangled by rising debt interest, no politics please! lol ;)
@Topic, that's quite a crackin' piece of work. I quite like how smooth and natural the skintone looks so far, although I wonder if it might turn out a bit dull in the end? Not that I would suggest anything like those crazy rainbow-coloured squids, though.

VERY NICE! I love the colors you chose...keep up the GREAT WORK!
-
Cherno, this is outstanding! I could have saved so much time and energy! lol
Never have thought about lego having produced something among the lines of a squid! Considering the straight lines the Lego blocks dictate, this is a masterpiece. Is it a kit or did you come up with it?

Thanks, Chris! Yeah, thought as much. I pushed the contrast a little more after I read your contribution, adding some pinks and blues. It still is relatively dull though. But I wanted it to stay simple and natural looking, because, as you will see, it is quite big and striking paint jobs somehow lose their impact the bgger the model is.

Thank you, Jim!
When doing some research, I saw the documentary about the giant squid being caught on film for the first time ever. They filmed in an absurd location, about 600 metres below water level. Nobody expected the animal to look like it would be made of some kind of organic metal. :o Man, I freaked out about how impossibly alien it looked! Like a being not from this world.
Bezzo and DeafNala: Cheers guys!
So, finally, the paint job is finished, enjoy the pics!

I used Reaper Master series coloured metallics on the eyes. They rock!

Some indication of scale needed? There you are:

I talked to Zafarelli from pardulon-models.com (http://pardulon-models.com) about releasing this. This monster is far too huge to garner any real interest, I think, but If you really would like to have one of these beasts, we would make them. However, we could only produce them if we would sell at least 5 of them. Feel free to contact me about details.
-
Absolutely stunning! Love the eyes.
-
:o :-*
-
:-* Love it. Also love the idea of the tentacles counting as separate figures for gameplay purposes.
-
Fantastic work. Did I read correctly that you cast the original parts?
-
It looks wonderful- especially when placed against the ship. Also the water effect is very nice. Did you sculpt it and then cast in clear resin?
-
Monstrous in the most positive way! :o
It was a wise decision to go with the purplish grey - the finished effect looks very natural and appropriate for the shape and size of the beast. The metallic red on the eyes looks great, too.
-
It looks great. Very, very nice, best one of these I think I have seen ;D
-
It's a Krakin' paintjob to say the least! :D
-
(...) I used Reaper Master series coloured metallics on the eyes. (...)
That did work quite well. The whole beast turned out nice (as far as giant angry Octopods can be called nice that is).

Wonder if it would be a good idea to offer sets of just the tentacles. Could imagine people using them for settings/ situations where huge tentacles are needed, but no Kraken.
-
Jesus, that's really nice! :o I missed this thread, but I'm very glad I found it. :)

Missed this thread until now. What can I say? It's awesome.
