Title: The Armies of Granbretan (Update 13 Jan 2015)
Post by: Melnibonean on 26 November 2013, 05:40:02 AM
Greetings folks,

If you are an admirer of the great Michael Moorcock you may have heard in the past few years that Eureka have been planning to produce the armies from Moorcock's famous Hawkmoon series of books. Well the plan stalled a bit for various reasons but is now back on track.

I've been asked to sculpt the figures for the troops of Granbretan (the bad guys in the stories) and the first one's are these little chaps below: The Vulture Legion or Order of the Vulture.

These are the first few of many. They look a bit different to some others that were made a few years back but that's because I've taken a bit of a different tack. I'm looking at the overall design in a twisted Renaissance/Baroque kind of way. Hence a touch of the Landsknecht in their dress - I figured Vulture Legion are mercenaries so I'll add a bit of historical mercenary charm to them.

There are more to come as the armies of Granbretan have many different orders all based on various creatures. So expect to see Wolves, Badgers, Bulls, Pigs, Moles, Ravens, Hounds, Boars, Crows, Flies, Mantis's, etc

This first one is based on one of the first figures made for the set by Dave King but there are some major differences.

Looking good so far - I've been waiting for this range to appear for far too long! My favourites are the scythe and pike figures. I feel the the flame lance would benefit from a little rethinking, particularly at the tip of the lance (I'd like to see some sort of nozzle where the flame shoots out from).

The Renaissance / baroque look is perfect - really fits the bill. Looking forward to seeing more!

Ooooh!
I like these.
 :-*

The Armies of Granbretan are something that has been missing from the gaming world for too long.
I had hoped that Citadel would expand that way in the '80's but it didnt happen.
Looks like that will be corrected soon.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm going to be dedicating all of my sculpting time to this project as it's long overdue and there is a lot of work to be done.

I feel the the flame lance would benefit from a little rethinking, particularly at the tip of the lance (I'd like to see some sort of nozzle where the flame shoots out from).

Reworking of the tip has happened since this pic was taken. At this stage it will still be a crystal but a bit longer and somewhat thinner.

I'm really not sure about the scythe thing on the first one. but other than that they look fine.

Yay Granbretan!!  :D

When will we see count Brass and the lads?

I have been waiting for this for a long time!!! Posted lots on TMP after the first anouncement...good to see an update!
I really like what I see so far, although I agree the flame lance needs a defined "nozzle" although could be argued the crystal emits the heat/flame. Any Idea of separate heads/ beast helms? That would be a dream come true!
Cant believe that Moorcock's worlds have been neglected in this golden age of miniatures!! Now of to look at some flamingo toys/figures  ;) !!!!!
The Baroque style is perfect!!!!

These are great! Hurry up!  :D

edit...

But...

1) I hope that pikeman is not going to be cast with his pike!

2) In my experience (with the Empire of the Petal Throne range) that customers much prefer the pikes to be a 60-degrees or vertical b/c they work better on the tabletop.

3) Also, I hope you will do at least one, but preferably two other pike poses, with vertical (or close to it) pikes. In the "old days" it was OK to build a phalanx with one pose, but not nowadays (IMO, anyway.)

Best Regards,

Howard Fielding

Wow, those are awesome! Even if you don't play Hawkmoon type games (Perish the thought!), they would look awesome in any fantasy battle! I really like the two handed swordsman. Big sword, vulture helmet, aggressive pose, what else do I need to say? Bravo!

No separate heads but each order will be represented with their own masks and distinctive armour.

These are just the first few. There will be a variety of pike poses and they will be cast without the pikes. There will also be variations in the pikes themselves too.

I'm currently working on a commander and I've already made a standard bearer (but I forgot to photograph him before sending him for casting).

Cheers again folks and thanks for all the positive feedback. This is a project I've also been waiting many years to see come to light and I'm just really very happy to be the one doing it.

The vultures look great. I don't usually frequent the Fantasy forums but I'll have to keep an eye on this thread.
I'd actually call the Hawkmoon books more postapoc/dark future than high fantasy.
I agree - Granbretan armies in miniature are long over due!

Just wondering though are there still plans to do the range in 10mm?

It's great to see all the enthusiasm for this project. It looks like there are plenty of people who would like to (finally) see the armies of the Runstaff saga come to life. Thanks for your positive input.

Any plan of doing Countess Flana Mokoseevar?

And Hawkmoon, the 'good' characters and the Guardians of Kamarg, for that matter? They'd likely reach a wider audience / have a wider market, btw.

Now, an ornithopter....

Don't know about reaching a wider market. Good Guys/Bad Guys - can't have one w/o the other. Or is that what you mean?
Title: Re: The Armies of Granbretan (new figures added (3 Dec)
Post by: abdul666lw on 03 December 2013, 05:00:23 PM
The masked warriors are very specific -though of course nothing prevents you from using them in another 'universe'. I suspect that the 'good guys' would look more 'generic' and thus would be more easily used in a number of settings, from maybe Aquilonia or Valdemar to some Da Vinciesque 'clockworkpunk' background?

This is so exciting.  Hawkmoon and Count Brass were my favorite Moorcock novels.  I have always wanted a set of Gran Bretan miniatures.  Thanks.

BTW I still have my Hawkmoon Box Set RPG from Chaosium.  Sad.

Each of the cycles is independant (but interconnected!  ;D)

That is to say, all the heroes are incarnations of the "Eternal Champion" and in some of the later books or stories they all show up together.

For Hawkmoon start with "The Jewel in the Skull". I think there are three books - "The Runestaff" is one, can't think of the other. The Count Brass series is the sequel.

For Corum start with the "Knight of Swords", followed by the "Queen of Swords" and then the "King of Swords". There is a series of novels that follow those as well.

For Elric I think the series starts with "Elric of Melnibone". His has the most books IIRC.

Erekose only gets one book - "The Eternal Champion" IIRC.

Then there are the Jerry Corneillius (or was it Von Bec?) novels, but I don't know much about them.

Turns out Hawkmoon had four books!

It's been a long time.
Title: Re: The Armies of Granbretan (new figures added (3 Dec)
Post by: axiom on 05 December 2013, 07:42:15 PM
Elric is probably the easiest read & the character who develops most (partly because he has the most books). The Dancers at the End of Time books are the heaviest going, but in theory most (all?) of Moorcock's books are linked by the Eternal Champion concept.

If you're looking for an easy route in, Elric of Melnibone would be my recommendation. The Jewel in the Skull is the first Hawkmoon story, it is in the History of the Runestaff omnibus.

The trouble with Moorcock's books is that they have been endlessly republished in compilations, omnibuses and occasionally under different titles from the original publication!

Post by: Sir Barnaby Hammond-Rye on 05 December 2013, 10:18:31 PM
Corum is my personal favourite, from all his heroes. I didn't read the books in order either b/c I just stumbled on them in the school library at first. I don't think I read all the Elric books even now!

You can get compilations of Hawkmoon and most of the Eternal Champion series.  Amazon had some decent prices for 1-volume compilations last time I checked.

Book Depository is a good place for finding Moorcock's books at reasonable price.
I've just re-read the Hawkmoon/Runestaff books for some ideas. I first read them (probably like most of you) years ago in the late 70's and again later on. But it's been at least 20 odd years so I was a bit rusty on the details.

Have to admit I didn't like the ravens very much, but the boar was good and the bull is bloody brilliant. Have to see if I can get hold of some Moorcock, last time I read him I was just a teenager and too young to appreciate what he was writing(just not enough gratuitous violence and over described sex in it for my teenage desires).

Really dug the ravens, the boar doesn't do it for me, unfortunately (I don't like the spear-raygun thing - maybe I just don't get it?), but that bull is FANTASTIC! By far my favourite in the lot.

I have the Elric books, I don't have the Hawkmoon ones. I also started a bizarro series by Moorcock, it was some Victorian guy, who wakes up in a future world that is strangely not-future. Air Warlord? Something. Not related at all to Eternal Champion. Still interesting though.

Fine work there M.

I love the Bull pose. I'd really like to see the Boar infantry done like that.  :D

Checked out the blog. Like the count Brass figure. If I can offer one small criticism; from behind his torso looks a little squat, like his legs are too long for his body. CB was described as being tall and strong so perhaps a little more length in the 'bod. Otherwise he's great. I quite like the face. ;)

Yeah, how does the bull fellow see? I think the helmet got a bit extravagant.

The best real life beast helm I can remember seeing is probably Cornwall's from Excalibur. Remember? He had a boars helm.

The spear thingie is a "Flamelance", something like a laser IIRC.

Love these figures. I have always liked the Hawkmoon books and for a long time fancied gaming this.
But I do agree with Vinlander that his torso does appear to be rather squat, a shame really as the rest of the figure is cracking.

These look great. I had the old citadel boxed set of Eternal Champion back in the day, but I'm ashamed to say I had no idea of who they were. I thought they were an elite team of Dark Elves.

This thread has got me looking into the whole Michael Moorcock universe and I'm getting well interested. Can't wait to see this range progress.

Hi Folks,

Thanks for all the replies and feedback. I know this range will be contentious for many as everyone has their own ideas on how the figures should be represented.

As it is, I've posted a sculpt of another of those characters who will pose most of said contention on my blog: http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com.au/

Keep in mind this figure is only a test sculpt and I envision several versions of this chap in various gear and situations will eventually be released.

Thanks for the positive feedback and criticism. As it is, a decision has been made that this figure won't be cast. I knew there were problems with it so instead of fixing them I'm going to re-sculpt the whole figure with a couple of deletions and additions (although I will probably salvage a few of the parts).

Is this going to be a slow burning project or is it full steam ahead? I'm really looking forward to seeing the range progress. When do you reckon it will be available?

As regards the Hawkmoon figure if you're re-sculpting it my preference would be that he didn't have his foot on anything but that's just my opinion.

I've just treated myself to the first Hawkmoon books in preparation for this great range.

I was still a novice in the hobby (well...i still am actually) in the second half of the '80 when i bought the Citadel boxed set of the Eternal champions. And i immediately took a liking for the figure of Hawkmoon and when i learned more of the story teh more i liked it. The books by Moorcock are on the top of my fantasy booklist, if and when i scrounge the money.
These miniatures you show Melnibonean are very, very nice. I will watch this closely and maybe.....just maybe.....nono i can not say more about it. However, keep up the good work. Cheers.

Greetings all and thanks again for all the positive replies.

Many of the figures, so far sculpted have been test-cast and I'll get a bunch of pics up soon. The casts may be altered before final production and some will be used for conversions.

Anyhow, here are a few new figures:

This one is a conversion of the vulture with a 2-handed sword. Note the addition to the beak.

(http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg91/ikhemm/Hawkmoon_V7_zpsd09f83a8.jpg) (http://s246.photobucket.com/user/ikhemm/media/Hawkmoon_V7_zpsd09f83a8.jpg.html)

This Pig warrior was made using a basic torso and legs for the purpose of making a few figures on the same body.
The Order of the Pig consists of poorly equipped foot sloggers - numerous and expendable! Note the binding on the fingers to make their hands look like trotters.

(http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg91/ikhemm/Hawkmoon_Pig1_zpsb28b7364.jpg) (http://s246.photobucket.com/user/ikhemm/media/Hawkmoon_Pig1_zpsb28b7364.jpg.html)

This one is the first Wolf warrior on foot (to get a basic style worked out). The Order of the Wolf will be on foot and mounted.

Great stuff, Melnibonean.

Can't wait for a look at the flies and mantids - there's a surprising dearth of insect minis.
I'm going to have too look into the source material! A brief skim of summary skim makes it sound great.

We'll be doing a lot of Orders. Off the top of my head: Wolf, Vulture, Mantis, Fly, Goat, Bull, Boar, Pig, Crow, Falcon, Hound, etc... And there will be about 16 to 20 of each Order.
There will also be the Guardians of the Karmarg (including flamingo riders) and the Army of the Dawn.

I have a couple of new figures here for your perusal. Order of the Fly and the Vulture

More figures, details and other info posted on my blog: http://this28mmlife.blogspot.com.au/

The Fly is one of my favorite so far. He's different from the others and I can't wait to make more of his brothers.

I'm not sure as Eureka are in control of that aspect.  :? But I think I can pretty safely say that they WILL be released some time later this year (maybe not all of them at once but each order as they are completed or near completion).

Anyway, Nic is getting some examples painted up but I decided to paint up a couple of test examples because I'm impatient. Please remember - These are tests. No official painting or uniform guide exists at this stage.

So here they are but better and more examples will follow. BTW - I don't think I've posted these poses previously.

4 The Warrior in Jet and Gold
5 Granbretan Naval troops in Shark and sea serpent masks
6 Von Villach
7 Meliadus
8 Granbretan Engineers in Badger masks with tools.
9 The King Emperor

Most of these are on the cards but at the moment we're concentrating on completing the Vulture Legion (only a couple more sculpts to go). There are also quite a few sculpts that haven't been released - mainly because I forgot to photograph them. Currently working on the vulture commander, Astrovak Mikosovar (I think that's his name).

Vulture Cavalry - cool!  :)

Thanks.
Yeah, amongst others I only posted this one on my blog for reasons I won't speculate on at this time. As I said above there are more figures as yet unseen.

Because it's not Karmag cavalry. I'm pretty sure only the Karmag horses are referred to as having horns.

Will there be alternate poses for the cavalry? It would be nice to have sabre and lance armed versions, though a quick conversion will fix the current model to have an ordinary lance rather than a flame lance. Ideally there would be cavalry command - both to put in squadrons and to act as generals.

Sir Barnaby,

Thanks. I really like the Astrovak figure. I'm quite proud of his cape which (on the green) clipped perfectly onto the back. Unfortunately this doesn't work on the cast figure. It's a perfect fit but the weight of the metal doesn't allow it to just hold in place :(

A mounted Astrovak is also on the cards for the future.

Vultures are almost finished and after a discussion today, the next set will be Count Brass' Karmarg troops!

I look forward to seeing Karmag's troops. You've certainly got your work cut out for you with this range. It must be a quandry deciding where to go next. As I read more and more of the books I want more and more of these figures.

I reckon Taragorm the Master of the Palace of Time with his giant clock mask would be a blast to sculpt.

I'm surprised at the lack of visual references there are for the Hawkmoon stories on the web. Plenty of Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings fan art etc but very little for Hawkmoon.

That's because of the movies and the TV series. Hawkmoon is like "ancient history" to these young'uns!  ;)

And back when the books were written there was no web to post your art on.  :(

Greetings all,
I took a bit of time out from sculpting to do some painting.

I wanted to see how the Vultures looked in a formed unit. I had a packet of GW Lord of the Rings movement tray thingy's sitting around so I thought I'd put them to use.

Not the best pics because I had to use my phone when my camera broke!

An Update... Of sorts.

Greetings folks,
I've had a hard couple of months with elderly parents and their health taking up the majority of my time and energy. Unfortunately it ended in my father passing away just a few weeks ago.

However, I have started back on the range and delivered up new stuff to Nic. Things are a bit slow at the moment but they are moving along (I'm still a bit pressed for time helping to sort out my dad's stuff) but I should be back into it full time in the next week or so.

On the table at the moment is: Taragorm (Master of the Palace of Time), A new Bull and a Wolf. Also some Vulture Legion variations.

Hopefully Eureka will have a few more of these at Salute this year. I look forward to seeing what difference the wings will make on the cavalry figures.

I was wondering if you got some sort of approval for these. I was planning something similar and wouldn't mind to mention the source of my inspiration in public.

I'm doing these figures for Eureka Miniatures. They have a contract with the author Michael Moorcock to produce them as he is the owner of the copywrite.
