Title: Gigacity 123 6mm - new building 4/1/2015
Post by: Vanvlak on 01 November 2014, 05:58:34 PM
Having been inspired by this: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=72345.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=72345.0) thread on MegaCity1, I have started a tiny project for a 6mm scale Giga City 123.

This will NOT be a Judge Dredd project, but will be loosely based on him & on Mega City 1 - which lets me off trying to convert 6mm scale Judges. I chose this scale as it would allow me to create a city-sized surface (in the damp cellar, so it also has to be damp-proof!).

Lost in the cemetery of unfinished projects are my unfinished Kaiju City buildings, which  will be adopted - and adapted - for Giga City 123 service, whilst retaining their original scope.

The figures used in this blatant rip-off will include :
Magistrate characters (including the hero Magistrate Angst)
Magistrate forces (troops, light and not-so-light vehicles, robots and fliers)
123 City Guard forces (troops)
Moblocs (large mobile vehicles)
Crusherbots (Terrameks by any other name....)
Giant monsters (a.k.a. Kaiju and mini-kaiju)
Still-to-be-identified gangs and other assorted enemies

Introspective: why do I persist in starting projects which I never finish, or show any progress beyond 2 weeks? Because one day the improbable will happen, and by chance rather than by perseverance I will finish one project, even if it's by accident.  ;D

Gangs in 6mm? Now that will be something to behold!

Dark realm miniatures has some stuff that might be useful for you maybe.
EDIT: not dark realm, not sure which one it was then. They had a line of minies that are something in between Space marines with Roman influences that always reminded me of Judges.
EDIT2: Steel crow prown productions exodus war guild prefects, those are the ones I was thinking of.

Something I am terrible at.... both in getting myself to take pics, and in taking good pics.

@YPU - thanks - I have to confess that Steel Crown stuff WILL feature in this, I have bought some of their stuff and it's not only good, some of the designs, as you rightly pointed out, fit in very well with this.  :D

Pics.

Some of the models:
(http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/vanvlak/GigaCity123/DSCF6913_zpscae3b0fc.jpg) (http://s78.photobucket.com/user/vanvlak/media/GigaCity123/DSCF6913_zpscae3b0fc.jpg.html)

The 'magistrates' would use the tank, from Steel Crown Productions.
The City Guard is at far right; the Magistrate next to him.
The others are the models I will use as gangers. The rad-suited types remind me of A.R.M. troops (Modok's lot); the robots are a bit Dalekky, but not quite. They can operate as distinct gangs or in unison. And I get a couple of rocketsleds (model at left)  :D
I still have to decide about basing.

The scenery:
(http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/vanvlak/GigaCity123/DSCF6912_zpsa9766afd.jpg) (http://s78.photobucket.com/user/vanvlak/media/GigaCity123/DSCF6912_zpsa9766afd.jpg.html)

This would be roughly 1/8 of the gaming surface - and I need more roads!

Thanks guys, too kind - but remember I never finish projects! So please pile up the pressure to shame me into completing this one.

The buildings are 100% scrap, incidentally - chocolate boxes, shampoo bottles, an old DVD reader, packaging etc.
The overpass road is a bit of cable casing, of which I have several lengths of offcut material rescued from the disposal pile when one of our Faculty labs was being refurbished.

I need to find a quick and easy (transfers) way to do block names, as although I am not doing a straight Mega City model, the names are a feature I want to keep.

Also thinking about rules and basing, especially as I have heavy armour and large beasties (the Martian ants from the Mars Attacks KS). And fliers...

Now you mention it I can see it, but I wouldn't have guessed it. Darn good idea as it clearly looks very good.

Er - hello, my name is Vanvlak (well, not really), and I'm the guy who takes forever to not finish a project.......
Steal away - funny you should say this Andym, as I was propelled in this direction by your own Mega City project. My original plan was for a Kaiju Island city. Can use it for both, of course.....

Two more pics (I'm on a roll).

A mega-cannon for the bad guys - this was once a Chaos project, now revamped into a GigaCity123 one. Don't ask about the rocky bits...
The size: tracks are from a 1:76 scale (more or less) toy tank.

It's not painted yet.... ;D

And now for something different - because you're worth it.

On the left, one of my wife's shampoo bottles. On the right, GigaCity123 building with VTOL pad under construction.

Will you base them individually ?

One pic further up the thread shows a few, but I need to paint some up.
Basing will be individual for characters or particular troops, and bases of 3-5 for crowds of magistrates (my not-judges) and gangs.

You know not MC and huge monster aspects aside, the idea of a larger scale riot vs law enforcement game is interesting. In Riot style games part of that highway usually would be a large battlefield. I was in Cairo during the 2011 revolution and travelling the city by taxi during the first stages I can tell you the whole city is turned in to what is almost like a chess game of strategic positioning by both sides, with the highway being blocked by walls of Riot gear police to prevent easy manoeuvring.

Just that shot of your set-up inspires something like that to me. Throw in all the madness your clearly lining up and this will be rather interesting.  :o

Thanks YPU - I can promise more madness  :D
As for riots and crowds - one problem - getting a good representation of tightly packed crowds.
OK, if I were to use all my 6mm scale orcs packed on large bases I could get there, but I do not want orky crowds - and cannot imagine painting a crowd of individuals. I'd need a model of people packed together.
And I just realised I need civilian traffic!

Hm, I can see your point on the rioters. I guess you could explain it away tough, see with the high tech body armor these Judges are wearing simply laying into them with a crowd is going to end badly. And even the miscreants of GGC 123.(rolls of the tongue nicely) have learned this. So these days they mostly stick to throwing stuff at them from a distance, trying their best not to crowd together to closely as that would only present a target for grenades. Hence why you only would have 3-5 miniatures a base for the rioters.  ;)

Good point, YPU.
I need civilian-like models, however, not easy at 6mm scale.

Meanwhile - a Patrol Bus and a hover tank, for those REALLY nasty gangs.
And the first of my rad suit gang - poor quality pic, will do better when I have enough for a group photo. You can't see the green visor I guess, or the checkerboard pedestrian crossing. I am using white bases as the board is a marbled sort of white.

(http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/vanvlak/GigaCity123/DSCF6921_zps1933dee7.jpg) (http://s78.photobucket.com/user/vanvlak/media/GigaCity123/DSCF6921_zps1933dee7.jpg.html)

And a new building, one of the largest of all.
(http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/vanvlak/GigaCity123/DSCF6924_zpsb59d4f8c.jpg) (http://s78.photobucket.com/user/vanvlak/media/GigaCity123/DSCF6924_zpsb59d4f8c.jpg.html)

No prizes for guessing what this will be when painted. The load of blue stickers (obsolete inventory number stickers) are an experiment, I am aiming for a pattern of layered slabs. Will see how it works when painted.

Yes - but I haven't found the right object yet!

@Mason - I was lucky - a local shop was throwing the Clippers stand away as I was passing, and I 'saw' the multi-storey landing zone right away.

It's not dead.

After having a very flu-ey week (in which the project started!) I had to catch up with work, leaving little time.
I finished another couple of bits, but still have to take pics.

I also realised I was not happy with the dark blue colour schemes for the vehicles and robot: the details of the model were lost in the dark colour.
And I wanted to rationalise my forces. This is what I'll be using:

Force 1 - Magistrates (robot police force, Chappy meets Ultron with a dash of Dredd)
Force 2 - Yellowrads (AIM-like troops in yellow rad suits, with some weird weapons and tanks)
Force 3 - Hydrunts (bright green robots which do look a lot like fire hydrants; still thinking of a larger support vehicle or robot for these)
Force 4 - GrannyWorks (mysterious manufacturing company with chain of shops across Giga City and its own well-armed militia, called by the citizens 'blue boys', 'fan boys' or 'beakies'; have some armoured vehicles)

And also:
Force 10 from Neverone*: all the odds and ends - a rampaging monster, giant ants from Mars, humanoid giant soldiers etc.

*Abbreviation for 'Never one unified origin or theme'

I'm sticking to very basic schemes, so Force 1 gets silver/light blue; Force 2 is yellow; Force 3 bright green and Force 4 blue (darkest colours, required by background in this case).
Force 10 will have any colour as it is not a one unified force.

I also need to add a 'non-force', which would include innocent bystanders, rioters and crowds and civilian vehicles - beginning with the latter, in particular an elevated rail track.

Some scenery - elevated stuff.

Elevated roads, with billboards and a bit of traffic.
(http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/vanvlak/GigaCity123/DSCF6928_zps3671034d.jpg) (http://s78.photobucket.com/user/vanvlak/media/GigaCity123/DSCF6928_zps3671034d.jpg.html)

The elevated railway and a road crossing at a lower level (I need to make some more roads with a greater height difference).
(http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/vanvlak/GigaCity123/DSCF6931_zps44ee43ee.jpg) (http://s78.photobucket.com/user/vanvlak/media/GigaCity123/DSCF6931_zps44ee43ee.jpg.html)

The elevated railway vehicles and station.
(http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j108/vanvlak/GigaCity123/DSCF6935_zps2af5ee1b.jpg) (http://s78.photobucket.com/user/vanvlak/media/GigaCity123/DSCF6935_zps2af5ee1b.jpg.html)

The loco came in a Kinder surprise egg (I had to fill in all the apertures which were gaping holes). It has wheels for traction, but the wagons hover on bar repulsor magnets - or they will, once I get around to do more.
The elevated station is another Kinder surprise model - I see I have to give the door more attention!  :(

Angel barracks - you (and my wallet!) have TheBaron to thank. It seems you will be populating the city with the average (and some not so average) guys. This does not mean I will be ordering the ENTIRE population of the Gigacity, which is around the 123 million mark....  ;D I don't think I could pay for all those - or find time to paint them....

Seeing as your project is, well, bonkers, I will lob in a few freebies that may do as extras.
Stuff I bought for myself but have never gotten round to painting and probably never will.

It wont be much but it will be a few odds and sods that may add some flavour to the whole shebang.

A few robots, a hover car that sort of stuff...

More stuff.
These are 'architects' model' bits of scenery with some details but not all - not realistic, but stylistic (lazy  ;) ).
Except for the Andym Fineboard Tower, named in honour of one of the great architects of Mega Cities.

Truly epic in scale! You are making terrain like an impressionist paints, broad strokes with a few details picked out easily conveys the entire thing, without having to slavishly do every detail.

And you might be right, it could take away from a single tower compared to highly detailed model, but if you actually fill your table with stuff like this most people are going to be to busy picking up their dropped jaw from the ground rather then notice the missing details. Blimey man.  :o

That tower is great! If I could make one suggestion it would be to make a watery mix of cheap brown and black craft paint to add some grime here and there, give it a more lived in feel?
Not sure - as I'm going for a surreal look, I'm making different areas of the city in different colours, with different levels of detail. The white area is the closest to the architect's model concept of an all-white area. When I put the lot together will see how it looks and work back if necessary.

Andym - tribute tower  :D

Meanwhile my crowds  - very nicely detailed little blokes - have arrived from Angel Barracks - my order landed here today very soon after my order. AND it came with the freebies promised  :D :D 8) 8)
So now I'll have a few more odds and ends (including two carnivorous little beasties) to add to the population and/or traffic.

A very good point! The game Mirror's Edge had a very similar aesthetic, very stark white clean buildings, with a very occasional splash of bright color. Contrasted really well with the dystopian society / dictatorship storyline going on. Which AB models did you go for?

Sorry for the delay TheBaron, I missed your reply!
I chose a few trucks, some junkers and the civilians.

Thanks AngelBarracks and YPU.
It should get more densely packed with buildings - in fact I have to watch it as I have to leave space not only for 6mm scale figures, but for being able to reach them to move them around  ;D

See what I love about that CD tower high-rise is the "floors" look like they could actually be playable in some way. Dunno how that would actually go in detail, but I can totally picture moving figures around on those levels. And the view down through the top is exactly like the Peach Trees interior balconies in the Dredd movie.
