Keep up the good work Ash!

I can't wait to watch the second video. Also I f**ken love the terrains you made for Frostgrave. What percentage of it is scratchbuilt? Also It would be cool if you would do a video on how you built them (I know there's tons of them out there but I'm curious to get your insight when it comes to building terrains).

Gorgeous terrain. Great videos. Look forward to seeing more.

Thanks guys!

I'll be honest Adam, I cheated a ton with Aquarium terrain and GW kits. For the most part it's all just pre-fabricated terrain that I bodged onto MDF, used Spackle to fill in gaps and bark to make rocks... then painted it with a combination of airbrushing and drybrushing! I think 80% of it was done in one day. lol

It was a big build project to get it (and all the models) ready for video. I'm currently knee-deep in Thaw of the Lich Lord for a second series (which the guys from Gaming with the Cooler and Epic Duck Studios will be joining me in doing!).

Hope you guys enjoy it. Lots more to come! Make sure you check out Owen's series (Cold North) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwGj6pEvU44) as well.

Really enjoyable videos with sweet terrain.  I wouldn't have thought I'd be watching battle reports but your delivery and the awesome niche games have hooked me.  Otherworlds eh?  Mixed emotions.  I'm looking forward to your presentation but those beautiful models; Use plastic army man proxies sniper  ;D!

Some really enjoyable videos you're putting out Ash. I subscribed a while back.

Love the table layout. That big stair block combined with the aquarium bridges is one of my favorite features.

Couldn't Owen have tried to summon things with his apprentice too?

e.g. when he failed to cast zombie before the game, he only made one attempt but both the mage and apprentice are "spell casters" right? (Though limited to only one per warband)
Same with animal companion and animate construct, possibly getting 2 bears and 2 constructs, one for each spell caster.

Please correct me if i'm wrong.

He definitely could have Maxxev, but forgot to.  lol That said, without empowerment and -2 to Cast it does get harder.

Glad you guys are enjoying it. :) I'm currently working on the second set of scenario models (I swear this game needs more models in scenario than in your warband!) for the November series. So far people seem to be reallye enjoying it so I'll more likely than not do another 4 game series for next month. :)

Ash, are those cultists just on 32mm bases? The ones you've been using in the videos had me thinking you were using Wild West Exodus bases, but maybe it was just the way the cobblestones sat on the base

Loving your video-blog, Ash! Enjoying your batreps already since the old WHF times and the Frostgrave stuff is definitly not an exception :)

Between, have you considered trying Kings of War? Great game for fans of big fantasy battles.

@Rusty - My Frostgrave warbands are on 30mm custom bases I made with textured card. You can see pics on my FB page of how I did it.

@Paboook - There's a Mantic rep talking to me about that right now. I'll give anything a go. If i do though, I wouldn't want to just do it with what we have lying around, I'd like to show it with proper models and whatnot and that would take a bit to put together. :)

@Julius1880 Thanks so much!

I've said this elsewhere but for anyone remotely interested in getting involved with Frostgrave but feel like you can't devote the money or time then DO NOT watch these videos because they're bloody brilliant and you'll feel like spraying your entire terrain collection with white paint 👹

Amazing job on the terrain and minis but the production values are second to none. Ash and pal have great personalities for this too (I've made vids for ww2 and I know how difficult the whole thing can be. My own criticism (boo boo hiss hiss 👹) would be a second or too longer when the die are rolled with the camera slightly closer 😳. When watching I was trying to follow things and struggled at times (I'm slow ok 😀🐌) But these are great

P.s. It's because of your vids I bought a load of Otherworld minis, best models I've seen yet.

@Dez - Love to have you! Just let me know when and we'll throw dice! :D

@Panda - I've got some shots on my Facebook page, I've dug at least one up and attached it. :)

@ Morray - I've had a BLAST painting those models. They've got a real 90's charm I can't really explain but I just love them! I think Red-Box is my next company to dive into.

Anyway; new Episode today! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkM4eoMKAI4)

@Paboook - I'm really enjoying dusting off my Dwarfs. I think The Hobbit SBG version of the rules is one of THE BEST rulesets GW has produced in the last twenty years. Really playable, great scenarios and wonderfully open force construction. Hundreds of beautiful Perry sculpts to go along with it helps too. :)

I just stripped my poor Isengard army after five years in a ziplock bag (Seriously, I felt bad... but I needed the carrying case for other things!) so I can get my Evil on. :)

My own criticism (boo boo hiss hiss 👹) would be a second or too longer when the die are rolled with the camera slightly closer

i've seen some other reports where there is a camera setup to do picture in picture for the dice tray, seemed like a good idea to me, but maybe that might be too small for D20.

Thank you for the close up shots...they look great  ;D

I've no background in Fantasy gaming and I've seen those wonderful bases your using!  I'm wondering are the cobblestone effect just painted like that or is it modelled as a part of the base itself? Where can I get my dirty paws on these delicious items

Thanks again
Title: Re: Ash's Ongoing Frostgrave Video Series
Post by: Achilles on October 20, 2015, 05:49:50 PM
@Maxxev - I've done that before (for others). I'll be honest, unless it's for a fixed-cam game, I find it ends up being more distracting than useful. You have to make the box so small so it isn't taking up too much of the screen that the pips end up being the same size regardless.

@ Grey Panda - They're home made. Just a 1" craft punch, 30mm beveled edge bases and a bead of Polystyrene cement to seal the edges of the textured plasticard.

Is the card readily available? Michael's or online? I'm very tempted to redo my collection but not if its a pain to acquire the card.

BTW the latest vid is up to the usual brilliant standards!
Title: Re: Ash's Ongoing Frostgrave Video Series
Post by: Achilles on October 21, 2015, 09:40:22 PM
Any model train supplier will carry it. You want cobblestone or random stone 1mm textured card. Plastruct is usually the manufacturer. Michaels won't carry it but you're sure to find it at a high-end train store or anywhere that carries architectural modelling supplies. :)

EDIT: Micromark has you covered for all kinds of sheets.

No sweat! Michaels will sell you the 1" craft punch. It's in their scrapbooking section. I use that for 30mm bases. I use a 3/4" punch for 25mm bases.

Also, has anyone tried the 1" punched card in a round lipped Malifaux style base? Does it fit well?

This is the reason I bought mine a good few years ago, to do custom Warmachine bases. However, you will need a slightly smaller punch - 23mm or such - if you want it to fit in the lip and not over it. This is because the base is 30mm diameter on the bottom, but the bevels reduce this by 3-4mm all round (so top diameter = 30mm-(4mm x2) = 22mm).

Incidentally, the common 25mm "slotta base" also has a 22-23mm diameter top as well, because despite being smaller overall, the bevel is a much steeper gradient.

Example 22mm punch here (https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/166584948/19mm-22mm-25mm-large-size-paper-punchers?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=22mm%20circle%20punch&ref=sr_gallery_4). :)

Nice one Ash :) .  It's sounds like I need to get one of those punches.  I have a compass blade that does the job but it's such a hassle with the dull blade (Micheal's doesn't stock replacements for the product  :'() that I've never had a problem with running out of cobbled styrene.  The compass blade's diameter can be adjusted to cut stock for any size base so it still has some utility in spite of it's limitations.

I keep a variety of punches around for making tokens, bases, whatnot. Say what you will about Martha Stewart, her scrapbooking section can be raided to good effect. ;)

Didn't post these here yet, but here's some bits and pieces for our upcoming series on Thaw of the Lich Lord! :D No Spoilers! BRING OUT YER DEAD!

Hey Ash, you mentioned using "Aquarium Terrain" -- how has that worked out for you? Are you referring to the arch bridge pieces? I'm trying to guess which pieces they are :)

I've been on the lookout for some "ready made" wood walkway type terrain too because I don't have the time these days to crank out terrain anymore. Did you hand make yours (or was that a homebrew worlds creation?)

Ash,
Yet another comment here on how great your terrain looks.
I'll second the request asking where you got your bridges.
As well, if you did a thread on how you constructed your base table - the combo of snow with bare rock, I would love to see how you did it.
Very well done.

The base is a  plastic(?) battle mat. Not sure if it's Cigar box or another company. Perhaps someone else can suggest the company or give a link?

The mat is the Alpine 4x4' Mat from Frontline Gaming.

The Viaducts are aquarium terrain from the pet shop. :D

New Episode posted today! My alternate Wizard, Telebrand the Enchanter, takes on a Necromancer in Genie in a Bottle! :D

Damn.I can't find those aquaduct/bridges anywhere. They're a great size as well.

HAHAHAHAHA

Well I know PetSmart had the viaducts online... one sec...

http://www.petsmart.com/fish/ornaments/top-fin-three-arch-stone-bridge-aquarium-ornament-zid36-17466/cat-36-catid-300071?var_id=36-17466&_t=pfm%3Dcategory

There you go. $20. :)

LOTS of cool stuff available that way. :)

My Wizards are Reaper and Otherworld minis for the most part. I think Telebrand is a Pathfinder fig. Hrothgar is just a standard reaper fig.

New Year New Wizard!

Melchior Black, the Witch Hunter, leads his daughter Stasia and sellsword-captain brother Oberon into the ruins of the Frozen City on a mission to prevent its secrets falling into the wrong hands.

Weeks ahead of them, Professor Vitale and his wayward students from the College of Magic have already been dabbling in things best left untouched. The Stars are Wrong as the two warbands encounter themselves amidst the ruins.

I've recently started watching your frostgrave series - which I am greatly enjoying. Especially the latest installment was good. I really like the narrative you guys inject into the game (though I mourn the passing of Terror II)

Do you have a place where you showcase the warband with pictures: theres some of the miniatures I'd like a closer look at.

Good stuff! Looking forward to more

EPISODE 14 - Dark Alchemy - Part 1 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdgW3qZkuXA)

I start a new three-game Frostgrave series on Dark Alchemy, the potions and solo-play expansion for Frostgrave that adds an adventure series taking your Warband through the dark underbelly of an ancient Alchemical Factory as it collapses around you!
This expansion is perfect for learning the game if you've never played, or for Campaign Organizers to give a 'leg up' to warbands jumping into an existing campaign with some gameplay experience and treasure hunting against NPCs before they dive in against other wizards.
Part 2 in two weeks!

Ah, there's an idea - hadn't gotten the expansion yet, but something for later entrants to a campaign to catch up a bit sounds interesting, may well have a look at incorporating that. If they're new to the game entirely, giving advice is also a bit easier if you don't actually play against them. Will keep a close eye on the vids to see how much experience and loot you gain throughout. Good stuff as always!

If you watch Owen (another CoOp member)'s campaign, he takes his level 0 Wizard through it right from the beginning. I think in the end he's about Level 5 and has a good chunk of coin in the bank to upgrade soldiers once he's able to go shopping for better soldiers. His first episode aired as well and is linked on my channel. :)

I think if I were using this to teach the game I'd simply help out rolling and moving for the monsters on the table (as they're all running off a program it's just mechanical so the other person doesn't feel overwhelmed) and use it to teach the basics and advise strategies to get out. :)

As you're only managing a wizard and 3 Soldiers at any given time, the amount to keep track of is really manageable as well.

I like to only use the dbl damage rule on a crit vs uncontrolled monsters. It's bad enough that the opponent auto hits and does max damage. This also allows a well armored or very tough soldier to survive a 20 but usually only just bearly. I am a big fan of all your Frostgrave battle reports and am looking forward to seeing more.

Well it will get bi-weekly for the next little while! :)

Thanks guys!

We try to play with 'all the rules' as they are in the book. I actually like Critical hits as they make even the most uninspiring, outnumbered scrub able to occasionally do something truly heroic.

The cost of course, is occasionally a goblin archer just murders two of your warband in the first turn. ;)

That's why we've never adopted the optional critical hits or wounded rules - makes the game play much smoother without any crazy swings in fortune! You still get one hit kills but it's rarer.

We play wounded but no crits. 20s seem to one-shot most of anything anyway, especially when paired with the Elemental Hammer'd Marksmen one opponent favors (*shudder*).

Have to get the locals tuning in.  A 9th Jan airing places the proposed Halifax start just 2 weeks from there.  Should be crunch time for people to get the final fixes on their war bands.  If I stick to plan I should have stuff ready have a little time to provide some painted proxies where they might be needed.

My recommendation Arch is to streamline any monsters not required by scenario to a friendly D6 roll. This is what I've done for the events I've run.

Each of you brings your three favourite wandering monsters. Place them in a row. If a monster appears roll a D6 to see which one it is.

This lets you theme your games to the scenario (what monsters would likely be around?) and also keep the tax off of one person on getting everything ready. :)

Also, break the scenarios down to like 2-3 per player and make each person in the campaign responsible for just collecting the bits and pieces for those.

Defintely took the pressure off of me for Lich Lord when we did it. :D

I do want to point out though that you can move through members of your own warband. It does state in the rulebook on page 32 in the last paragraph. Unless of course you guys play differently in which case never mind...
But nonetheless great video as always and can't wait to see the next one.
