After the thread a few weeks ago about Urban War I dug out my handful of painted models from back in the day.
These were painted back in 2005/2006 and whilst I had intentions of adding to them I got sidetracked with other stuff and that was that. A couple of weeks ago though I thought I'd see if I could replicate the colour scheme as I had a couple of models prepped and ready to go (and covered in 10 years of dust!). Here's my new trooper 27 on the right and one of my old paint jobs, trooper 12 on the left. I decided to go with rebasing them all too as the lipped edge bases look too big and bulky on them.
(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpf1/v/t1.0-9/12993631_1378128512214158_6734965610045618760_n.jpg?oh=1ba75780cb7f4fe2cb5a4d7f540a4199&oe=57B60196)
A pretty good match although a few areas are somewhat improved. With that in mind I decided to retouch the old paint work to bring them in line with my current model. Basically the guns, muddy boots, metals and a few sharper highlights here and there.
Here's trooper 27 again along with troopers 12 and 03 with their redux paint work and bases all finished.
(https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xat1/v/t1.0-9/13043323_1383252091701800_1627100314810299314_n.jpg?oh=996aaff3254802dd1153087c9f9782ec&oe=57B6065F)
Two more marines to retouch and then the sniper. Once I've got a suitable base and figured out a few additional improvements I'll tackle the saurian rider.

Very nice. Love them.
-
Very nice they did do some really nice miniatures in that line.
-
Good looking figures. Thanks for sharing.
-
Very nice. PJ suits these super well and pops in all the right places for me, too. :-*
-
Nice!
-
Excellent! I especially like the metal edged, black shoulder pads. 8)
-
Oh yes, fantastic. I think the Viridians are the only Urban War models I really like and your work is the best I have seen 8)

Initially they were the only faction I really liked as well. Syntha got better once the resculpts were released. Triads and Gladiators grew on me over time though and Koralon have some interesting bits and pieces. I am rather keen on VASA right now and have ideas for colour schemes but the models are quite costly for what they are.
Thanks for the comments everyone. :)
-
I'll second Mal. Nice work on those.
-
Really sharp work!
Very impressive.
-
I think the Viridian Marines are perhaps the only 'big shoulder pad' models from that time that still work for me.
-
Brilliant :)
I can't fault them.
-
These are really quite lovely. Inspirational stuff.
-
Top work. :o
Love these figures. And Viridian stuff was my favourite faction.
-
Fantastic, and also my favourite faction
-
Excellent smooth work. Great contrasting colours without jarring too.
-
I recall having issues with the sculpt of the mount, and it still looks off-balanced, but you breathed a lot of life into it.
"A pretty good match although a few areas are somewhat improved."
Amen! A very noticeable 'somewhat improved.' ;)
I favored the Koralon, but just for other genre uses; this is spot on.
"the only 'big shoulder pad' models from that time that still work for me"
Fair's fair, they 1) aren't that big, and 2) these don't cover the joint between arm and body the way the big uglies did.
Still, more pleasing to the sensibilities, one hundred percent.
Doug
-
I've noticed that the thing I don't like about your painting is that is not on any/all of MY minis. ::) ;)
Beautiful, as usual from you!
-

I don't mind them although I'm sure the tail would need to be longer to balance things out if it were real.
The main problem with the saurians, at least the early castings was the amount of weight and strain put on their ankles. I remember painting the heavy gauss rifle one for Urban Mammoth and it got sent back after some weeks for repair as the model had nose dived over time. The one I've done for myself had pins put into the ankle and back of the knee to try and avoid something similar happening. I still ended up wedging a rock under the raised foot though just in case. When I rebase it it'll get a pin in that foot I think. It could also do with reigns adding but I'm not sure if I'll be able to pull that off.
Thanks for the comments everyone. :)
-
Really nice stuff. Top work :)
-
Yeah, the metal was too soft for the saurians, mine also drooped. So I also had to stuff some scenery under the feet. Worked well and looked cool :)
-
Quite possibly some of my favourite sci fi troopers (that I don't even own!). You've done a great job on these guys! I must get me some
-
For me the best SciFi-work of you. Great. Hope you will do the copplestone Neo soviets some day
-
My 6 man strike team is all retouched and re-based now. I'll take pics of them when I next set up the camera properly but for now here's the sniper that I've just finished basing.
An 11 year old paint job here but I repainted the rifle and retouched a few minor things. He's little muddier than planned but I had to cover quite a scratchy old mud job (not a phrase to type into a search engine!). When I get the oval bases I've ordered I'll have a stab at tootling up the saurian rider. I'd like to add some support weapons to the team. I've got a MG team and mortar team prepped from back in the day but I have assembled some shock marines and an interdict recently just because they're cool. No idea if or when on any of that though.
-
Very nice!
I wished my rifles would look as good as yours. And that camouflage pattern looks excellent.
-
brilliant! :-* Camo & googles are great. Really inspiring force you got there. More coming?
-
More coming?
I did start a machine gunner yesterday so that could be done within the week or by the end of the year. lol I'd really like to get more done though.
-
Lovely work on them all so far but the sniper is a reet proper job :)
I look forward to more (as and when they arrive ;) ).
-
Had some nice big GW oval bases turn up today. Perfect for rebasing the big fella.

Gorgeous work, I must say (...even for the old paintjobs!). A group shot when you're done would be most welcome! :D
-
I've been working on a machine gunner recently. Here he is prior to having a nice coat of matt varnish.

And here's the MG. Just need to paint the ammo belt.

This looks very good, especially the used armour.
-
Very nice!
I wished my rifles would look as good as yours.
This +1
Those rifles and the machine gun are ace.
Do you have any tutorials or tips for painting them?

I keep meaning to sort out some video stuff so hopefully I'll get my arse into gear with that sometime.
Anyway, I had the camera out earlier and took some decent pics of my six man strike team so far.

Stunning work! I like the chipped metal effect!

Beautiful work, as always.
Look forward to seeing more.

Missed the tread (so far!). Another incredibile work :o
-
I envy you for your painting skills, everything looks sooo smooth.

Finished up the machine gun and now need to paint up the spotter to complete the team.

Working on retouching my old saurian rider paint job now.
-
Awesome! And the old-style bases are perfect! Simple but balanced!

Yeah, the lipped edge bases just seem a bit big and cumbersome for these models. I like them for other things but good old fashioned slottas look best on these.
-
Liking these a lot. :)
-
Firkin aces.
I've seen lots of fine work fom you but these are especially good.
Thanks for sharing
-
Almost finished the retouching of the saurian rider. Just needs another coat of varnish and some grass tufts on the base.

Work of art as usual
-
That's brilliant! :o
-
Beautiful work as always - a real treat to see!
I notice that your black colours (leather gloves, machine gun, etc) have a softness and warmth to the highlight colours... Do you achieve this by adding a touch of light beige to the latter highlights, or do you start from a not-quite-black colour and then highlight up from there?
-

There's a bit of a yellow cast on that photo but I do tend to use colours other than straight grey to highlight black. The gloves and boots on this guy used VGC Cold Grey which is very much a bog standard grey but for the gun I used VMC Stone Grey which I'd hardly call grey to be honest as it's more of a beige. That gives a warmer finish. Sometimes I use VGC Khaki instead. Any sort of off-white, cream, buff or beige works well.
-
Thank you :).
I have some black bikes to paint (Ravenwing Space Marines), and I wanted to show separation between the various materials despite them all being "black". I think I'm going to try highlighting with beige when I next get a chance, and (assuming I get a nice result like yours) was thinking it would work well for the tyres.

Yeah, perfect for tyres. Try a blue grey highlight too for a bit of variety. I like VGC Sombre Grey.
-
Thank you again! :)
I'm always on the lookout for new ways of painting black and white colours, as they are tricky to get right (whether on a model as a small area, or as a major part of the colour scheme). Do you often work up from a plain black to the highlights?

Yeah although that first layer of highlight generally covers everything but the deepest recesses.
White is another thing altogether! ;)
-
Just realised I haven't shown finished pics of my saurian rider. It's been sitting around for weeks and with having the camera out anyway I thought I'd better take a few snaps.

Excellent stuff Mr Lead! :o In particular, the green eyes of the beastie are well done!
I had a wee look at your website, where is the broken robot on the base from?

It's one of the Urban War Androsynths I cut up. Kind of wish I hadn't hacked up a perfectly good model but I didn't pay for it so it's not too bad. I ripped it and the rocks/concrete slabs off the old base and reused them.
-
Wow, absolutely fantastic. I love the old Urban War mins, great character.
-
Good lord that looks fantastic.

I just had a look at the old Androsynth range, dam, I wish they made some unarmed version of those, could do with a bundle of them.

You might be able to get by with the grape gun armed ones. The shields are separate and you might be able to remove the guns. Although it could be a faff if you need loads.
-
Been a while since I painted anything for myself. Lack of time and lack of inclination being the usual problems. Ended up at a bit of a loose end Sunday afternoon so plucked something easy to do off my painting desk. This time a colonial marine mortar loader. Nice and easy to paint up like all of the kneeling crew models. Almost done here and then I can move onto the mortar. If I can maintain my enthusiasm I might get the other crewman done as well.
-
Fantastic work on that Saurian rider! :D
-
I think I wrote on my blog that I was going to try and finish painting the mortar this weekend. Didn't happen Saturday so thought I'd get it done today.
Before...
After...
And lifted straight from FB because I'm lazy:
...the cylinder on the base is meant to be a mortar bomb case. It's roughly modelled on one that another mortar loader is carrying. I made this one out of one of those little plastic tubes that you get on the end of new paint brushes. A slightly larger one was used for the end caps and was just pushed over the top, glued and cut down
-
Nice work all round but that beastie is stunning and looks just about perfect on the new base.
:-* :-*
-
The mortar and crewman is now finished and I just need to do the second crewman for it now.

After that I've got shock marines and interdicts lined up but I need to think through the colour schemes for those a bit more carefully before launching into them.
-
Very swish with some lovely, subtle weathering.
:-*
-
Wonderfully painted, sir. :-*
As always.
Love the way you've done the weathering, and all the little details handpainted on the minis...
-
Smoooooth! :-*
-
Beautiful
-
Awesome work. Love the colours and the details and, of course, the weathering.
-
Mortar and Loader are both fantastic.
-
Brilliant from start to finish Simon. :-*
-
Thanks for the comments everyone. I'm really enjoying doing these, albeit very slowly.
-
Mortar team done!
Gives me a nice rounded strike team now. Not complete by any stretch but potentially very usable (not that I've played Urban War before though).

Pics are probably bigger on my website or facebook (links in my sig).

Beautiful work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

They really do look great!
-
Decided to dive into trying to figure out what I want to do with my shock marines.
Lazily copy and pasted from Facebook:
This is one of the earlier shock marine sculpts, the later ones being quite a bit bigger. I was a bit torn between the two types of sculpt. The earlier ones have rather small heads in comparison to the regular colonial marines and the later sculpts are big roided up models and perhaps a tad too big for my tastes. In the end I went with the early version but swapped the head out for one of the later ones. Looks about right to me.
I wanted a slightly different colour scheme to my standard marines so I thought I'd use the same green that I used on my mortar accentuated with dark green here and there. It's a bit bright at the moment but some washes and weathering will mute it down eventually. Bit of an experiment really. If it looks good when finished I can easily plough on and do the other two models I have prepped and waiting.

The blue background pics looks really professional ! :-* particularly impressed by the saurian rider, everything, every effect on this mounted figure is just perfectly done.
I really like this range of minis, I bought standard marines to use as cyberpunk swat teams, but this project is paused for now.
-

You could almost believe he was a commission painter. ;)
-
lol
I didn't go on his website when I posted :)
Pro photos for pro painter, it makes sense ! :D
-
Lovely paint on those colonial marines, sir. :-*
The group shot is really nice.
-
Thanks again for the comments. :) Just wish more people were doing UW as there's very little out there beyond the official product shots to ogle at.
-
Done a bit more work on my shock marine. Still feeling my way with the colour scheme. I think it'll come together once the final bits and pieces are done, and the weathering should do a lot to it too. No idea what to do with the shield at the moment. It's looking alright next to my colonial marines. The green ties in well but is different enough to set them apart. I'll do something similar with the interdict drop troops when I get to them eventually as well, though a different green.

Looks great - very smooth greens.
Like you said not many painting Urban War (I've some but using in my weird war armies) - are you planning on painting up any other factions (triads - hint hint)?

Funny you should should mention Triads, they're my second faction I've been collecting! I'd like to do some when my Viridians are done but I'm at a bit of a loss for colour scheme ideas.
-
I really like the urban war stuff but it is a little pricey (not GW pricey) so I tend to get other stuff first. Also I usually prioritise Fantasy. You're making me want to get some a little bit more though.
-
I am not going to show you mine. What can you get out of looking at the work of a finger painting monkey anyways.
Sometimes it's just nice to see what people are doing. It also spurs you along a bit if others are also into a game or figure range, like all the Frostgrave malarkey.
And I'm sure your painting isn't that bad ;)

I know we've already had a thread about the price of miniatures so I'm well aware there's a bit of disparity between what customers and manufacturers want from a price tag, but I have to agree that the UW stuff can be a bit pricey. The prices are a bit inconsistent as well which is bizarre. With UW being dead and Scotia having the models as more of an archive service than a product that's new and current I think a bit of a price reduction would do well to attract people, especially considering how useful the models are for other things.
-

This.
Of course they would most likely be useful in my lead-pile, but still... The idea of them being useful at a reasonable price point would help add to the ballast that keeps my home right-way up in bad weather*.
*Now there's an odd allusion to the emotional benefits of the hobby if ever there was one!
-
Either I was unaware there were such cool models in the viridian range or your conversion and painting work is what makes them stand out now!
-

They're just nice models. The only conversion work has been to swap the original pin head from the shock marine with a head from one of the later, larger shock marine sculpts (Scotia were happy to sell some spare parts at a very reasonable price). Only thing to bare in mind is that the standard colonial marines are the earlier versions (4 for £9) not the later ones that have more varied but awkward poses and no necks (and cost a hell of a lot more!).
-
It's been slow going getting anything done recently but I did manage to get more work done on my shock marine. I added the insignia, which took far too many attempts to get right and a load of weathering which I always enjoy doing. Just need to do the shield now.

Just the right amount of chipping and wear n' tear. Fantastic.
-
Realistic coloring, perfect weathering.
Top notch, as always.
-
You bastard!
I was actually quite happy with how I had painted my own set, now you've got me thinking of throwing them into the melting pot. ;)
Just kidding, great nay, awesome looking paintjobs.
Thanks for sharing.

Just a quick pic of the shield finally done on my shock marine. This has been the sticking point (one of the sticking points!) with this model. In the end I dispensed with originality and pretty much lifted the design straight from the studio paint job on Scotia's website. Now with the colour scheme and insignia sorted hopefully I'll find it a bit easier and quicker to work through the other two shock marines.

looks fantastic

Lovely work

Same old same from me here. Still that bloody shock marine although this time it's finished and has some half decent pics.
I will now lazily copy and paste from Facebook ;)
The main model here is one of the earlier shock marine sculpts from 2004 but I swapped the head and shield out for parts from a 2007 resculpt. The original head I always thought looked a little small so the larger version works quite nicely. The later version of the shield has a bit more detail on it, mostly on the rear. Not a big difference but enough to sway me to swap it out.
I thought I'd post a comparison pic as well to show this marine next to a 2007 sculpt. The later ones are a bit bigger. Still nice but a touch too big next to my older colonial marine on the far right for my liking (another 2004 sculpt). I also really like the over sized robotic arm on the earlier sculpt, it makes me think of films like Ghost in the Shell or Appleseed.

No reason to mount him on a 30mm base other than it makes him look a bit beefier. :)

I've still not forgotten about this project! It's been a little while but I've had another shock marine half painted and gathering dust for a few months. The other weekend I decided to try and move things along and get it finished.

Really glad to get it done at last and I might try and get the third one done sooner rather than later. That one's a sergeant and will round out the unit for now, then I can move onto another small unit of something different.
Some of my pics earlier in the thread seem to have disappeared for some reason, at least for me but if anyone is interested the finished pics of everything so far are in my gallery (http://stonecoldlead.webs.com/apps/photos/).

Fantastic - great you are back painting this army
-
Pretty much perfect looking, not a thing I'd change. You knocked these out of the park.
-
I love the way you do weathering mate. :-*
-
Got a couple of additions to my strike team painted up.
A shock marine sergeant to go with the two troopers I did a while back. The head is a Hasslefree Miniatures one.

A commander in Lieutenant Johnny G. Originally from the Void line but transplanted into Urban War.

I've also started on a little three man squad of Special Forces guys. One done and hopefully not too long before I get the other two out the way.

Also converted a heavy gauss rifle gunner as the actual HGR models are later sculpts and don't mix well with my older models.

Adore the special forces squad. The cammo is just perfect! 8) 8)
-
Simon, so excellent work is nearly posing! ;) Very well done, Sir!
-
WOW. You painting is making those model looking like something from Infinity o_o
-
I just submitted my last LPL entry, feeling pretty good about my painting, and then I open up to this. I don't know how you do it. You can take pretty much any figure and turn it into a jaw dropper.
-
These look awesome !

Got a couple more special forces guys painted up. A sergeant and another trooper to make a nice mini squad to add to my strike team.

And the obligatory group shot.

They look amazing! That camo pattern is stunning.
-
The quality of your painting never cease to amaze me!
The conversion is also top notch, some of the sculpts however are IMO a bit "out of date".
Just imagine how thin the shock marine sergeant is under his armour...
;)
But that is true for all GW Space Marines before the Primaris sculpts also...
;)

Urban Mammoth did rectify the shock marine issue with updated sculpts but I think they went a bit too far the other way and ended up making them oversized and completely roided out. My shock marines do have bigger heads than normal though which might not help but the original heads were so tiny in comparison to regular colonial marines I had to swap them out.
-
I do think this kind of proves alot of the Old/Middlehammer disbelievers wrong though. These were quality sculpts saddled with below average paintjobs and poor photography.

lol
The original shock marine paint jobs used by Urban Mammoth were also my paint jobs and photo's. I've improved a little since though. ;) There are some really nice models in the UW catalogue and whilst most of them have been surpassed by more modern day sculpting they still hold up pretty well, especially given how popular much older miniatures are. I'm really enjoying painting these up but I don't think my enthusiasm is really catching on.
-
Apologies good sir. I didn't realize, it just seems a shame that such nice minis are overshadowed by GW.
-
Wow. Can i ask what green you used as a base for your shock troopers? Its perfect as that general army green colour I never seem to get right.
You should do a tutorial!!
really great stuff you complete bastard ;)

No problem, some of the stuff I did for UM was a little rushed. The photo's weren't great to begin with and were just to show the work had been done. I'm surprised UM didn't do better ones. We won't mention my Syntha paint jobs. ;) The guy who painted a lot of their stuff later on was fantastic though.

It's a base mix of VMC Russian Uniform WW2 and VMC Olive Brown (used to be called US Olive Drab before that name was given to a different colour entirely). Highlight with more Russian Uniform, add VGC Desert Yellow and finally a bit of VGC Bonewhite. I used washes over that as well. A thin mix of GW Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade and also some rusty weathering done with thinned VGC Parasite Brown.
:D

Thanks mate, consider it stolen

Very nice! :-*
I have a box of those... somewhere... ::)

Got my heavy gauss rifle conversion painted up at last.

And a group shot of all the regular colonial marines as a squad. You might be able to spot the ones I painted 13 years ago by the slightly rougher looking paint chipping on the armour.

I couldn't say in the world, there are too many great painters I don't know or couldn't put a name to, but you are in my personal top 5, along with Oniria, Capt Blood, Redzed and Hatzapoulos George.

I would add Andrew Taylor(antediluvian miniatures)to the list and Blanchett from Games Workshop. The Problem with Blanchett is, that he is only doing Warhammer-Stuff. Oh, and I forgot Kev Adams.
And also Prof. witchheimer, Admiral Benbow and Lt. Hazel.
Ok, may Worldlist has, with Captain Blood, seven names...

Quick pic of the whole strike team here. Really wish I had a nice board and terrain to display them on but instead you get a crappy snap of them in my display cabinet.

Calling it done for now as I want to get some other stuff painted but I will return to this project as I have more troops to add and of course, no project is ever really finished.
-
Fantastic! :-* A nice wee bunker built into a earthen hill with some fortified wall would look the part as a simple background.
-
Lovely, looks like I need to strip the ones I have and round off the squads a bit and get them repainted! Incredibly inspiring. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
