Got the machine gun team finished off at last so here it is.

Working on retouching my old saurian rider paint job now.

Awesome! And the old-style bases are perfect! Simple but balanced!

Yeah, the lipped edge bases just seem a bit big and cumbersome for these models. I like them for other things but good old fashioned slottas look best on these.

Almost finished the retouching of the saurian rider. Just needs another coat of varnish and some grass tufts on the base.

Beautiful work as always - a real treat to see!

I notice that your black colours (leather gloves, machine gun, etc) have a softness and warmth to the highlight colours... Do you achieve this by adding a touch of light beige to the latter highlights, or do you start from a not-quite-black colour and then highlight up from there?

There's a bit of a yellow cast on that photo but I do tend to use colours other than straight grey to highlight black. The gloves and boots on this guy used VGC Cold Grey which is very much a bog standard grey but for the gun I used VMC Stone Grey which I'd hardly call grey to be honest as it's more of a beige. That gives a warmer finish. Sometimes I use VGC Khaki instead. Any sort of off-white, cream, buff or beige works well.

Thank you :).

I have some black bikes to paint (Ravenwing Space Marines), and I wanted to show separation between the various materials despite them all being "black". I think I'm going to try highlighting with beige when I next get a chance, and (assuming I get a nice result like yours) was thinking it would work well for the tyres.

Yeah, perfect for tyres. Try a blue grey highlight too for a bit of variety. I like VGC Sombre Grey.

Thank you again!  :)

I'm always on the lookout for new ways of painting black and white colours, as they are tricky to get right (whether on a model as a small area, or as a major part of the colour scheme). Do you often work up from a plain black to the highlights?
