Title: What rules for Gothic Horror
Post by: TJSKI on July 27, 2016, 03:46:50 AM
So,

Been getting the itch (or is that goosebumps) to do some Gothic Horror gaming. I was wondering what set of rules do some of you use for your games?

Thanks

TK

I'm using Pulp Alley which has the new Horror Cards which are a blast!  Brilliant system all round.

Haven't managed to get a game in for ages but I love Chaos in Carpathia (and Chaos in Cairo).

Chaos in Carpathia (traditional Vampire/Werewolf Gothic Horror) and Chaos in Cairo (if you want Egyptian themed Horror) without a doubt. Superb rules, very easy to pick up and plenty of scope to add in your own elements.

Do a search on this forum for "Chaos in Carpathia" there are many excellent threads and inspirations.

Also take a look at Witchfinder General which is a niche set based on.....Witches and Witch Hunters. More of a historical feel but is a really great game.

Empire of the Dead, Westwinds follow up their much maligned Vampire Wars (awful typesetting and confusing rules althiugh some good stuff in them).

In Her Majesty's Name, using the Gothic supplement.

Fear and Faith has all the usual vampires and werewolves.

TJSKI, as I feel that horror games are all about setting and scenarios, I strongly suggest you to check out the Vampire Wars not for the rules themselves, but as great source of inspiration! For that Victorian/Hammer Movies feeling, Chaos in Carpathia and Empire of the Dead (in about that order, IMHO). Also IHMN Gothic.

An excellent article on the Gothic Horror genre: http://tvtropjavascript:void(0);es.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GothicHorror (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GothicHorror)
and its tropes: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IndexOfGothicHorrorTropes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IndexOfGothicHorrorTropes)

A lot of people enjoy the Pulp Alley mechanics for horror games, they now have specific rules for that and you might look around the web for reviews and AARs. The game also has a huge and ever-growing web community of enthusiasts lurking in the Pulp Alley Forum and in this LAF as well.

Witchfinder General for great "burn the witch!" inspiration and scenarios.

Fear and Faith is very funny for "Buffy" games, they have a proper supplement specially for that as well, but their ideas can be easily "borrowed" for other rules systems.

Don't forget to check out the proper Yahoo Groups for the ruleset of your choice!  ;)

The same CiC mechanics in a modern "vampire road movie" setting: RoadKill from West Wind;  their RoadKill miniatures are full of character and a little bit sized up (32mm) to go well with 1:43 die cast vehicles.

I've heard good things about Pulp Alley.  ;)

And there's a fun new Pulp Alley Horror Deck that would be perfect for Gothic Horror.  ;D

HAVE FUN

By the way, that Horror deck could pretty much be used by any system...

What is in the Horror deck and how could it work with (for example) Vampire Wars or CinC?

robh, the Horror Deck is a very clever tool for the game Pulp Alley, but can be adapted for other systems as well; take a look: http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=90435.0 (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=90435.0)

I just used Frostgrave to run a Gothic Horror game http://www.freewebs.com/norrins/gothichorror.htm (http://www.freewebs.com/norrins/gothichorror.htm).

Nozza, very nice table and minis; also I liked very much the idea of using villagers as Treasure Tokens!  ;)

That's a neat idea, yes.  Reminds me of an old "Vampire Hunt" convention game I played where the objective markers were all coffins.  Didn't know what was in them until opened, and then it could be anything from graveyard earth, a sleeping Bride, just a regular corpse, or in one case a load of dynamite left by Irish revolutionaries.  :)

7th Voyage: The Witching Hour is a good system for gothic skirmishes. Plenty of classic creatures and items.

On this board, it's not so much a typo as a Type O.

Very much so; Malamute told of his work to make a usable game out of it, but, alas, it all disappeared with a disk crash. Broke my heart, but still an excellent read, and some very compelling bands to use in whatever rule set.

'The Grand Tour of Miss Beaufort Summers' is IHMN's version for not-Summerdale.  ;)

If I've not gotten my usual completely lost, the deck of horror ala Pulp Alley.
