HYW Book information
« on: 27 July 2017, 10:48:16 PM »
I have a fair number of books dealing with the Hundred Years War most of them Osprey books and some others and many of them cover many things like Armor,Weapons etc.

But what I'm looking for is a book that covers all the Battles that took place during the Hundred Years War.

Now I have some books(mostly Osprey)which cover a single Battle like Agincourt or Crecy but I would like to know is if there is a single book which covers all the Battles of the Hundred Years War?

There are a pair of books, old, called The Crecy War and The Agincourt War which cover the earlier and later parts of the wars.  They are relatively inexpensive I believe.

Might you know who published them?

OK, Burn is OK and gives a decent overview but leaves out the sieges etc which is a bit of an oversight. Still, a good primer.

I personally would go with Jonathon Sumption who has produced four masterly works on the HYW. A heavy read but full of details- like the stand off on the marshes of Calais post the Battle of Crecy where the French nearly repeated their collective 'mistake' yet again and very shortly after the battle. Heavy reading and relatively expensive given the usual price of £20 per volume (there are four).

There are a number of other books, I'll do a wee bit of 'digging' to see if I can come across something cheaper than the Sumption volumes.

Cheers,
Darrell.

If you don't mind ebooks, the Sumption books are about $14 Canadian each on Amazon, and it looks like they go for around £11 in the UK store.

Byrthnoth I don't do ebooks since you need a ebook reader which I can afford with my limited funds.

Darrell I've heard about the Sumpton volumes but sadly I can't afford them as well.

In that case go for Burne..... or Anne Curry.....

Watch out for "the machine gun of the middle ages" syndrome with Burne  :o lol

There's a short paragraph (or a few short paragraphs) about many HYW battles, and more, in Ian Heath "Armies of the Middle Ages" vol.1 if you can find it.

I do have the Ian Heath book I got it off EBAY awhile back when I was just getting into Medieval Wargaming.

And I now know that there were 55 Battles of the HYW some of them involving Naval actions so at least I know what they were called.

As for the other books if I get them for the right price then I'll do it otherwise I'll wait until they come down in price.

A must read for anyone really interested in the Hundred Years War has to be the primary text Froissart Chronicles see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Froissart%27s_Chronicles

and http://www.gutenberg.org/files/13674/13674-h/13674-h.htm

Hard to find full hard copies in English but well worth reading and excellent insight into the Medieval mind. His comments on Scots and peasants etc. are deeply entertaining.
