Re: Hearts' Fantasy Projects - Skirmish Terrain Test Piece
« Reply #15 on: 28 July 2025, 03:17:04 PM »
Good morning,

I managed to crack out a quick test piece for what will eventually be Mordheim/Frostgrave/whatever terrain.

I cracked this one out super quick (about 30 mins start to finish) and am reasonably happy with it. I have some non gamer friends who are going to help paint the whole town so I wanted to keep the paint jobs incredibly easy to follow and may go back eventually and weather them more, but frankly I think this is totally passable for the time being. I used craft paints and detailed it more specifically here https://gamingwithmitten.blogspot.com/2025/07/fantasy-gaming-2-first-test-building.html

I am nearly done with those dwarves but had a disaster yesterday. On my way out the door to play a game actually I noticed that the printer mustve finally shaken the box of dwarves loose. After sorting through the mess, this was the state of the dwarf army

No real damage thankfully and everythings actually been repaired already but it gave me a heart attack when I saw it. The bolt thrower has seen better days and I had to reglue the King's arm back on but other than that it was mostly bases that flew off.

The sound of a box of miniatures crashing to the floor is one of the most heart-stopping sounds to be heard at a convention or game place. Glad the damage wasn't too bad...!

After what feels like forever, here's the completed force. 2 blocks of 16 warriors, 16 thunderers, 16 quarellers, a gyrocopter and a king.

I've got some other fantasy projects on the desk now. But this completes the first leg of the Dwarf army. I already have a bolt thrower in progress but am probably going to take a break from dwarves for the moment. I'm waiting until I play Old World before I commit to painting the bases on these but the figures, I'm happy with.

Nice work! The painting is great and the color choice/uniform design keeps it very coherent as an army- just the group of dwarves who'd be marching around with a king!

The only thing that was stopping me from painting more of these after that test building a week or two ago was volume. I had a friend graciously agree to help me paint all of this so she and I sat down together this weekend and cracked all this out. It's a little sloppy but honestly it's done now. The buildings are a mix of printable scenery and hexengarde. I'm super happy with how it all turned out though. About 10 hours of painting across 3 days.

I have ambitions to add more stuff but I think this is enough buildings for now.

Impressive! And I love that they are sturdy enough to be packed in a tub. I feel like my collection of fragile buildings takes up an inordinate amount of space. What to do? I guess I could be less precious about them and just pile them together... nah, I need a bigger house.

Nice work!

Great work.

"Sloppy" also looks more realistic. At least to my eyes.

Thanks for the kind words, hopefully it plays as well as it looks. In the meantime, a few of use decided we're gonna crack out a Frostgrave 3 game mini campaign so I took the excuse to build and paint a couple warbands. This is the first of the 2. I'm trying to just paint stuff I've collected over the years so these figures are all from the original Nickstarter. I went with a Sigilist for my Wizard.

I went with matching runes for the Men at Arms. Again, quick dirty paint jobs with the intent of thinning the pile

Thank you!

We played a "demo" game to reacquaint with the rules before the Mini Campaign Day next weekend. My wife managed to kick both my men at arms into the well. The terrain is definitely serviceable to say the least, though I could stand for more scatter I think. This isn't all of the terrain too which is nice for a 3 x 3 table. My Old World Game got postponed until next week so I've switched gears a bit on the dwarves but haven't totally forgotten about them

Great job on the Mordheim warband and the dwarf host; excellent progress all around.
I actually rather like the size you picked for the quarrelers, they look so cool in an 8x2 formation as opposed to my usual 5x2; I might start doing the same.
