Suggestions for ice effects on ships?
« on: 27 May 2009, 01:10:47 AM »
Hello, everyone.

I'm working on a small force for "Uncharted Seas", and my goal is to paint my ships as if they've spent the majority of their time in icy environments/on icy seas, etc. I have the sails and masts down, but  I don't think simply painting the hulls in my base color and then drybrushing bits of white here and there will quite do it.

I was hoping someone might have a few painting tips and tricks. Is there a way you've found for painting on an icy effect on the physical surface of a ship or vehicle? Snow isn't the problem, it's ice that is.  I have found plenty on line about putting ice on bases, about painting white, etc... but I'm not looking to paint white here. What I'm going for is painting a ship that looks like it could very well have recently been freed from an icepack.

Not sure how else to ask this, but figured I might get some good tips here.

Thanks,

Doc

If it is a freesed ship you also need some ice droplets.
Try to get a Faller (HO railroad accessories) set with ice parts.

I would rule out trying to add icicles or droplets - in that tiny scale it would look ridiculous.

You could, however, use clear gloss varnish, applied thickly, but only on small areas, to resemble buildups of ice. Of course, it will look a bit "molten" and not very white, but you could also add some tiny specks of white between varnish layers.
