10mm Black Powder
« on: 27 March 2021, 11:13:47 AM »
Is anyone gaming Black Powder in 10mm? If so, what basing are you using? I'm finding the "company" concept fiddly, and it doesn't look very good.

I'm tempted to base by the battalion or half battalion, and use status markers for formation.

Any thoughts out there?

cheers!
I didn't look at the Ark, honest...

If you're happy using markers for formation changes I'd say go with a single big base or two and make life easier for yourself. I think I've seen FPW in 10mm BP using 50x50 bases. A lot of people use 4 smaller bases per unit, usually 25mm or 30mm,. just to allow the formations, but it's not necessary. I've also seen quite cool looking lines using 120x30mm (i think) single bases.

What periods were you thinking of doing? As for some periods you only need one or two formations, which can be easily be done with single basing. Maybe having a small base off marching figures could be used for showing march column etc. I'm in the process of rebasing pike and shot bases from multiple to single to just use markers as it's a faff having all the different bases when it's rarely needed.

Cheers, need to get my WSS and ACW guys based up. Won’t need to form squares or the like, so will try the big bases.

I accidentally jiggled one of my WSS boxes, and all the battalions got mixed up. That was 40 mins of my life wasted sorting them out. Can do without that.

Thanks for the input, appreciated

Magnetic basing paper might be the way to go to avoid that!

Are you likely to use other rulesets in time as that's probably a consideration. Trying to think of what ones you might encounter, for WSS single basing is probably grand, ACW some rules may be more awkward about basing, though I'm sure you can make it work. If course if you'll only ever okay BP no issues there.

I suppose it depends on what unit size you are using. When we played a lot of Hail Caesar with 10mm figures, based for warmaster on 40x20mm bases, we used 6 bases to make a unit with a foot print of 120x40mm. It was a bit fiddly to move around, so I would probably use 40x40mm base now, with 3 to make a unit. If you want a more linear look then going for 40x30mm bases would work too.

With 3 bases per unit should be easy enough to move around, and can be re-arranged into column easily enough. Square will be a bit untidy...

Sabot bases are also a very good approach to let you use smaller bases to give flexibility for other rules, while making manoeuvre easy.

I use 10mm SYW using Black Powder.  I use 100mm frontage for standard sized units, (5x20mm for foot and 4x25mm for horse)

In my opinion as long as both forces are based the same the rules are totally adaptable.
