Tinting clear resin?

Does anyone have a proven technique and suggestion for type of paint/ink/whatever for tinting two part polyurethane resin?

I want the result as transparent as possible.

Hello Peder,
I’ve used acrylic paint,thinned to a wash,and inks. Be very careful a little goes along way inks are my preference,best to do a test run first.
As you know it’s best to pour resin in layers; what I also do is tint each layer(after drying),a light sanding will give your medium of choice some ‘tooth’,don’t shade the final coat of resin. This method gives me complete control without disaster.

So if I understand you correctly you do not mix the resin with the tint but put on a layer after it has set? I am familiar with this technique and I am considering it. I am however hoping to find a dependable way to tint the resin itself before pouring.

I do tint sometimes , do a test batch. Very small amounts are the way to go

I use artist inks with polyurethane resin.  A little goes a long way so you are better to do a test pour to work out a mix that gets the effects that you want.  The test will also tell you if the ink causes any unintended chemical reactions with the resin.  One more thing that you can do is mix your test tint in a clear plastic drinking cup and leave to set.  Write the mix on the side so you have a permanent reference.  That way you can not only have the mix written down but also have a colour swash sat on the side that you can compare other mixes to so you get consistent colour throughout the process.

Yes, thanks for asking. As my experiment with tintning with water based inks did not go well (the resin turned opaque and slow to set) I purchased a set of 20 transparent tints off ebay... just to realize I *had* a set of the same purchased at the same time as the urethane itself.

I do however have a few resin casting problems to solve before I will do any mixing and pouring.
