Because Cricky Hitchcock invented them first, way back in White Dwarf #12 and then later republished in 1981's Fiend Folio.  Mind you, he called them Xvarts for some reason, but they were just blue goblins and we all knew it.

I suspect the origins for a lot of the Fiend Folio monsters involved early White Dwarf writers and rather a lot of hallucinogenic drugs.  It would explain things like the flumph and the flail snail if nothing else. 

Mind you, it wasn't just the Brits who were tripping when they came up with stuff for D&D.  As far as I'm concerned this video is canon:
