Jazz Age models AFG14 & 15
« on: 29 September 2021, 08:01:18 AM »
Dear all
re the above figures in the Empress Jazz age range. They wear British (?) tunics over traditional dress. My question is are these Militia used by the British, or regular Afghan troops. Or both? I intend to use them as 'British' troops but would prefer to be accurate. Note the figures come with either a fez or a turban. I cannot find anything relevant on the net or in any of the books I have. All help appreciated.
Frank

Afghan militia for 1919.

By the by, it depends on what you mean by militia for the British. If you are intent on making tribal militia for the NWF provinces then they tended to be clad in local dress so just use suitable Afghan NWF tribal figures with or without some kind of identifying mark, depending on taste.

If you mean one of the auxiliary Frontier Corps, like the Khyber Rifles, then you want figures in regular Indian Army kit and attire.

Thank you for your help.
So Carlos what do you think these figures are? They are not in full uniform. They wear the tunic with belts and (in some cases) pouches but all worn over native dress. I would really like to be accurate.
Sorry I cannot post a link to pictures but I know that you are familiar with Empress products.
many thanks
Frank

They are, as I tried to explain before, Afghan militia or regular Afghan troops circa 1919, ie  the Third Anglo-Afghan war. They appear to be based on photos taken from that period. The Afghan army was the recipient of a lot of hand me downs, it's as if their Quartermasters doubled as store managers at Oxfam.
