I'm finding capaldi to be pretty charmless. And other than her rather cute nose i don't see much point to the assistant other than the dreary "how to fit in a romance while helping save the world" sub plot. maybe the old 20 minute episodes with a cliffhanger ending  focused the writers more.

I could be wrong here but it seems to me in the old episodes the audiences knew what was happening and the doctor didn't. we were rooting for the doctor to solve the mystery. too often i find the with the modern stories im wondering what the hell is going on until 5 minutes before the end when the doctor has his eureka moment of enlightenment. bores the pants of me tbh .

I find this to be true of a lot of modern mystery shows. There's less reliance on the old rules of dramatic irony or classic whodunnits and more on the "Look what deus ex machina I just pulled out of my hidden pocket! Gee whizz, aren't things tied up nicely!?"

It becomes painfully apparent if you have a couple hundred hours of police procedurals on in the background while writing. Jeepers.

I watched enough, sporadically to make an informed judgement about how the series was going. That is all anyone can do if they are going to make a decision not to watch somthing. It could always be "pure gold" in the next episode. I'm not persuaded that it was though. Very much style over substance in my opinion.

So it seems I'm blind, but you didn't see  :D

I am a Who fan so yes, I'll be sticking it out. The season finale looks promising and one can only hope next season is better.
Waiter, my soup is giggling.

I enjoyed most of the Matt Smith, though there were a few points it was a near run thing.

I even picked up the final season on DVD to see before it finally made it to Netflix. No rush now.
