SCW Foreign Legion Uniform Colour?
« on: May 29, 2024, 06:26:59 PM »
Good evening. I'm planning to build a small force of Foreign Legion in 15mm for use with the "For Whom the Dice Roll" rules. The only sources I have with colour details  are the Ospreys on the Spanish Foreign Legion and the Armies of the Spanish Civil War. The books all show different shades of green which of course can be true, but I suspect is mainly due to the artists style.  Can anyone help with a view plus the suggested  Vallejo paint...other manufacturers are acceptable!

Thanks.

Hi SJWi

Try Vallejo German Uniform 70.920 or the Fieldgrey for the trousers and maybe Green Sky 70.974

Hope it helps

Alberto, thanks.  Can you tell me what colour you used for the Nationalists in the 2021 photo? I appreciate it may be too long ago to remember!  Also, how do you find the "For Whom the Dice Roll" rules. I used to use the Peter Pig "Bayonets and Ideology" rules but lost interest many years ago and I'm still building up to use these new rules.

Regards.

From what I’ve seen the Legion uniforms were various shades of green. I rationalise much of this as being down to sun bleaching, campaign dust & grime and whether it is brand new or campaign worn.

Off at a slight tangent, but the best SCW uniform guide I’ve seen is Jose Bueno’s book.

Cheers,

Geoff

For my 20mm figures I used 974 Green Sky with a 885 Pastel Green highlight. Sorry no photos.

Dear Sjwi,

Sadly I didn't succeed to set-up a game with "For Whom the Dice Roll" , shame on me !

About the colours used on the nationalist infantry I used Vallejo's Russian Uniform as a base.  Mixed with a bit of dark brown for the shade and some flesh tone for the highlights and then a pinch of white in the most raised spots.
The spanish olive green haveoften a brownish hue. Once again, different manufacturers, wear&tear etc you have quite few variations.

Elliesdad,

Bueno's book it's an great source and a must have, but not exempt of errors like the CTV uniforms.

May I add another suggestion? Have a look to the Minairons pdf's , LLuis made an excellent work.

Look after too the reenactements sites, lots of good pictures and information.

Chaps, thanks for the various replies.  The Bueno book is hard to track down and commands high prices. As this is a bit of a "minor project" .....for now....I won't be investing in it.

As for the Legion colour I had almost come to my own conclusion that the Vallejo "Russian Uniform" would work for them so I will use that. For any in shirtsleeves I need to find the light green colour for the shirts.

I'll check out the Minairons stuff and also look for re-enactment photos.

Regards
