Magnetizing lipless bases?
« on: 17 August 2024, 07:54:55 AM »
So lipless bases, how to magnetize them, especially trying to keep things thin? Take Renedra bases for example. Their bases are 1.5mm think, but if you want to make them magnetic what would you do? I can think of three ways. 1. Magnetic sheeting 2. Metal sheeting 3. Magnets. Thought is to be thin.
1. Magnetic sheeting. Cut a matching size circle and attach underneath. Prob is the stronger stuff can be thick causing the base to thicken up past what  you desire.
2. Magnetic sheeting, like roof flashing. Cut a matching size blank to match the base and attach underneath. Bonus is the flashing is thin and won't increase the base thickness much.
3. Magnets. They come in all shapes and sizes. But drill a hole through the base and place the magnet in the hole and glue it in. Now the magnet may be thicker than the base which means it will stick above the base. This can be covered up by basing material maybe.

So what other ways are there that I dont know about? Let me know.

The best way I know of is to put magnetic sheet on the floor of your storage box and base your figures on 0.9 mm thick steel bases say from say PWS

https://pwsltd.square.site/steel-bases

Not the cheapest option but cheaper the more you buy. Given the time and effort you put into painting figures they are well worth it as they lower the centre of gravity so less likely to fall over or if dropped fall base down, figures up  :)

I've put 1mm thick magnets in holes drilled in Renedra bases. Holes the same diameter as the magnets, superglued in. The basing material on top, with pva glue provides some extra support as well.

So it can be done  :)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

I've had decent success with very thin steel shim glued to the bottom of the base and then trimmed to size with scissors. I haven't measured the thickness of the shim I've used, but I wouldn't think it was any more than 0.2mm, as it cuts easily with ordinary scissors.

Then magnetic sheet in the bottom of my travel/storage boxes, and the steel shim sticks to that.

Steel shim? Specifically? And cut steel with scissors? Would love to know and especially see more. Got pics?

This company sells 0.55mm lightweight magnetic sheet that you can cut with scissors. I stick them under my Renedra bases with magnetic sheet in the storage box. Or you could use ferro that the magnetic bases stick to.

They are UK based though. Not sure what’s available in the US
