ACW miniature scales?
« on: December 25, 2011, 11:19:55 PM »
Hello everyone,

I am planning to get into the American civil war but I have a bit of a problem with miniature scales.
I was wondering how well Perry miniatures scale up to Renegade miniatures, and also I'd like to know if the Perry plastic infantry box is any good or not.
Thanks already.

Renegade are miles bigger than Perry, they are cheaper but their range is limited.  The Perryplastic ACW were their first out and are the worst box of plastics, still they are a cheap way of setting up an army.  The Zouave box is great and the new Confederate infantry, when they are released, will be good, too.

The Bulk of my ACW Union Army is made up from Perry Plastics with some Foundry, Perry and Dixon Pewter-Minis thrown in for some Variation.

Unfortunately you'll have to get rid of about half the box of each Infantry box if you want to play skirmish games (Those marching poses are good for nothing, especially because they have mounted bayonets, whereas the others dynamic poses don't have)
Far less active than I used to...

Yes, the Renegade figures are much larger all round than Perry. I have a load of Renegade as the bulk up my ACW units and they are, as joroas says, somewhat limited in range. I also have quite a few Redoubt for some added character and for cavalry, artillery (with some Renegade), sharpshooters, commanders, etc. Some people really don't like the Redoubt horses but I don't have a problem with them. I just recently took advantage of Crusader's sale (now ended) and bought a few of their ACW figures to see how they compare. I really like them and they don't look out of place with Renegade and should be even less so once painted (whenever that might be). I have mixed Redoubt and Renegade in the same units without problem too. Redoubt aren't cheap but they quite often come up on Ebay (at least that's where I've bought a lot of mine).

Renegade are the largest as everyone has mentioned and there is little variety.... in addition their ACW range has remained dormant for 5 years.

I prefer and use Redoubt and recently Steve Barber miniatures - his ACW range is growing and mingle well with Redoubt:

I've also included Ministories blog (I hope this is ok to do this) - look at his ACW gallery he has a mixture of Renegade/Redoubt and Steve Barber

"Redoubt" are my favourite miniatures for the ACW, and in a similiar vain "Sash and Saber" also do some very nice characterful miniatures if you like that. Excluding the basic infantry and cavalry plastic box sets the Perrys also have a nice ACW range worth looking at. Some of the older Foundry ACW is pretty nice as well, but pricey and some of it is not even available except on e-bay or forums.

I happily use Perrys, Sash & Sabre, Steve Barber, Foundry, and even a few Empress miniatures. I wouldn't use Renegade with them as they would look like giants.

I appreciate the postings, as I have been seriously looking into getting involved with American Civil War, but don't know which manufacturer to choose and which ones mix well.  I have been looking at the Rdoubt figures and the Perrys but I know that they don't mix and will have to make up my mind which one to choose and go with.

I am using almost all Foundry figures for my ACW and only going to Perry or someone else for the items that Foundry don't make - artillery teams. I have some Perry ACW and I think I must be in the minority as I don't rate them.  I have the skirmisher infantry packs and find that some of the musket detail is odd, hands can vary in size on a figure and the odd belt starts on one side of the figure but them disappears and not under another belt either. This is unusual as the Perry's did the original Foundry ACW range so I would have thought they could only have improved  :'(

Don't get me started on all the casting feeder lines  >:(

Leaps, if you are in the US Sash and Saber are well worth a look. The sculpting is good, the castings clean, and the variety is fantastic. You can get a pack of 40 figures and no two are alike. Since I'm (slooooowly) building forces for Terrible Sharp Sword that last point is crucial to me.

A range no one has yer mentioned is Old Glory.  Many people find them quirky and they are quite literally a mixed bag.  I find them a bit tall and skinny compared to Redoubt or S&S but  they can have a lot of character and for lead can be quite inexpensive.
Also, speaking of character there is Dixon but I'm not sure if they are in production any more.  Some folks really dislike Dixon; I'm not much of a fan.

My own collection includes all the above plus Renegade, Foundry, Perry plastics and even some ancient Minifigs and they all mix well on the table.

For me it would be Dixon every time ~ although I also have a few Foundry, Perry and Redoubt figures mixed in here and there.
