Floppy hat manufacturers...
« on: 17 July 2012, 09:34:34 PM »
Who makes figures suitable for the 1670-1690 period apart from Northstar and Front Rank?

(I have some "1672" figures - very good - and have a vague notion of mixing in the odd "other" figure for a bit of variety.  Would be good if they were compatible with Copplestone/Saleh size-wise and of equal casting quality.)

There isn't much on the market in the way of pre-Nine Years War (i.e Grand Alliance) troops. Some figures from the old Dixon range would be suitable for the 1670's : they're very early (mid to late 1980's) Mark Copplestone sculpts, but they're considerably smaller than the North Star/FR stuff, so don't expect too much in terms of compatibility here :

Similarly, the newly re-released Foundry Marlburian/Grand Alliance range has a few useful and very nice Perry-sculpted pikemen, but they're more 26 than 28mm and will look like dwarves next to the Copplestone/Saleh/Brown figures :

As its name implies, the Warfare League of Augsburg range covers the 1690's, though some of the command and pikemen could be pressed into service for the Dutch war if you are not too picky. Size-wise, these are more compatible with North Star and Front Rank, although they tend to be a good deal more slender - especially compared to FR :

The old Essex range is still available, though it probably won't be of much use to you : it too focuses on the 1690's and the sculpting style, while good for its age, is not up to Copplestone/Saleh standards.

Reiver Castings also do a late C17th range, but the focus is once again on the Jacobite and Grand Alliance wars and speaking for myself, I find the sculpts awful.

Thanks Arthur.  Now there's a full answer if ever I read one.   :)
