Fanticide - What do people think?
« on: 01 March 2013, 02:38:33 AM »
So I'm thinking of picking up Fanticide next time I'm down at Eureka, what are people's thoughts on it as a system?

Specifically, how does it play? Is it balanced or does it swing like a freshman? Are the unit creation rules straightforward?

Also, is anyone in Melbourne playing this?

Keep us posted Scurv!  :)

I have an old army that doesn't get many outings anymore, so Fanticide may be a way to break it out of storage.

I picked up a copy at Cancon along with a kingdom of odd army. I have played one game so far, which I generally enjoyed - in part because the game share a lot of similarities with Bolt Action, which is my current go-to-game. The rules are pretty straight forward and play is fast and furious. The special event cards are a great touch. I used my monkeys and a friend used a dwarf army he created - I really enjoyed the game, but the experience raised some issues:

Combat is always one to one so powerful model are hard to kill with regular troops. I was somewhat surprised that there is no mechanic for attacks by massed forces and I need to explore more of the special/magical unit it to better understand how it all balances out.

If you are making up forces you probably need to have some gentlemen's agreement on what is allowed. I've only played one game, but it seemed to me that forces that have a high give and take will be tough to beat no matter what they cost

All in all I though the game mechanics were solid and gave a fun quick game. I will certainly be playing more since I can play with an army of flying armed monkey's; what could be better than that! I am also looking at Eureka's daughters of set for a possible second army.

It looked really great when I had a browse at CanCon. Jack seemed really keen about it! My impression was that it was quite good for building unique units from existing minis gathering dust in my collection, and a chance to use the wacky figures in the current ranges too. But I'd love to see some AARs!

I didn't pick this up as I didn't care for any of the figures with the opening release but know that I know I can customize it to whatever war band I want I am more intrigued by the rules.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

You can customise it to any warband providing you follow the set pattern for warband structure, leader, missile unit, melee unit, monster.
It is not a free format warband construction system.....more the pity :(
