IHMN Numb
« on: July 09, 2013, 06:37:31 AM »
Craig,
I've been having a blast running the Ra Faction (love Path of Shadows spell), but now I am concerned that I may have been playing "Numb" incorrectly.

Up until now, we had played that "numb" essentially meant the character had to be killed twice - ie that numb allowed you to shrug off the first kill.

But re-reading the trait is states that numb applies "the first time you are hit" - regardless of pluck save.

Can you please clarify this - I know my anti-Ra foes will probably cheer the change. Thanks again!

It negates only the first hit taken, no roll allowed , even if your Pluck Roll would safe you.
Example: shooting phase 1st guy hits you with a pistol, simply ignore the hit, even if your 3+ Pluck roll would probably safe you anyway.
later that phase second guy hits you with is gatling , now you must roll your Pluck safe with a -2 modifier.
Note: Only the first hit in the game is negated, melee or shooting.

You played your Numb Talent like the Fanatic Talent but with an automatically successful re-roll. I think your Anti-Ra fellows were not amused  :'(

Thanks Peabody. It sometimes hurts to get these clarifications, but it's the right thing to do.

I agree with Mr Peabody's reading of the rules.

But we decided to play it like auto success Fanatic anyway - mainly because Numb is 10pts, and Fanatic is only 5pts. And we thought that using up Numb when you could easily pass your Pluck test was not very useful.

In our games (so far several outings of Black Dragon Tong vs Servants of Ra) we have found hitting the opponent is easy, but getting him to fail a pluck roll is hard (apart from Prince Akehton who seems to fail pluck rolls all over the place...)

fred,
you raise a very strong point - Numb as written costs 10 pts but seems of comparatively lower value since figs equipped with Numb would likely pass their pluck roll in 80-90% of cases (depending on pluck modifiers) anyways

And yes, at 5 pts Fanatic is more valuable/useful since it allows you to reroll a pluck roll when you really need it. I think I will switch Numb to Fanatic and spend those 5 pts on something else.

We've yet to have Berserk triggered - its fairly unlikely to happen.

A combined Fanatic + Berserk, were when you make the Fanatic roll, you become Berserk would be good.

Yes, a 'Knocked Down' result is not terrifically common and so have been thinking about how to trigger 'Berserk' more often...

Link two talents together, so for instance in our recent game we figured that if the leader of the company (i.e anyone with the Leadership talent) was knocked down or taken out in combat then any member of his/her company in the same combat with the berserk talent would then "go live".

Seem reasonable?

(Tarzan fell so it was logical that his great ape buddy would go wild!)
