Did they not have longbows? It isn't an area of Late Med. history that I know an awful lot about?
OK.
Ah, I didn't realise that the Swedes didn't use large formations of bows. It would be interesting to read about it- but then I may have to learn Swedish(?)
Darrell.
Hi Darrell
Glad that you are interested in some medieval Swedish history:)
We did use longbows but not in massed formation, the allmoge units did use them mixed with crossbows and polearms, by time the crossbow become the main shooting weapon, suppose it was easier to learn to use a crossbow, easyer to use them in the Swedish woods and had a better penetration of the Union knights armour when ambushed at short range in the deep swedish forests...
Unfortunally not much written in English about this period of the swedish history.
These 3 Osprey books are the only one I have found that gives some information about Scandinavian warfare.
Osprey - Men At Arms 399 Medieval Scandinavian Armies (2) 1300-1500
Osprey - Men At Arms 396 Medieval Scandinavian Armies (1) 1100-1300
Osprey - Men At Arms 436 The Scandinavian Baltic Crusades 1100-1500
Here you can download a short piece, in english, about
"Murder and Execution within the Political Sphere
in Fifteenth-century Scandinavia" by one of Swedens most renowed Historical Professors that have written several book on the subject, but only in Swedish...
Here are a drawing from 1500 by the German mercenary Paul Dolstein of some Swedish allmoge soldiers in mixed formation. By 1500 the crossbow was the main shooting weapon
