Some help with brush on primer?
« on: 10 January 2018, 01:08:46 PM »
Im having an issue with vallejo brush on primer that Im hoping someone has a solution to.  Ive used vallejo for years and years, and over the past couple of months, im starting to get lots of 'popped bubbles' in my primer finish.  Ive got a relatively new bottle, but Ive used it for probably 2 months prior to the last two.  Any ideas?  Too much shaking?  Not enough shaking?  Humidity?

In addition, any other suggestions for brush on primers?  Ive used the vallejo primer through an airbrush before and Im not a huge fan of that or rattle cans.

Thank you!

I’ve only just started using brush on primer - using  Vallejo Grey and I’ve been pleased with the results. A couple of things I read  to avoid bubbles where to avoid vigorous shaking and to avoid vigorous brushing.

Acrylic Gesso from an art shop works well.
I use black Gesso frequently and have no problems with bubbles.

Sounds like the medium/pigment ratio is off in favor of the medium. I may happen if the pigment has settled and you have not shaken the bottle vigorously enough. Or if the bottle has been exposed to low temps.

Anyway, I shall take theis moment to plug my favorit brush on primer: Liquitex white (or black) gesso. It works a treat.

I used gesso for the first time last month and I'm impressed.
Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

Ahhhh, thanks very much for the gesso idea!  I used that prior to vallejo, but probably 10 years ago!  I might give that a shot.  But, also, I do tend to vigorously shake and vigorously brush on....thats just never been a problem before, but maybe I could try a little less vigorous!  Thank you for the replies!

Vigorous brushing is the problem - I’ve found that the little brush flicks that can occur over the mini’s rises and folds are to be avoided.

Little and slowly is the way.  :)
