Mutiny questions
« on: 13 April 2014, 02:09:57 AM »
I'm starting up a Mutiny-ish project, based loosely on the Delhi Field Force (with a dash of the Lucknow relief columns), and would like to clarify a couple of points before I do anything (too) stupid...

- Can 'line' infantry figs be used for Rifles? And if so, is there any particular headgear that I should prefer or avoid? (I'm mostly using Mutineer, so we're looking at either a couple of varieties of what I take to be covered shakoes, or airpipe helmets - the forage cap/pugri combination is slated for my Bengal European Fusiliers. But Foundry and Perry are both live options, too.)

- Ditto for Marines, particularly for headgear - I believe the uniform itself is virtually identical.

- And finally, I presume Foundry Indian irregulars would work for an allied contingent, like the Kashmiris at Delhi.

I should add that I'm not too concerned with absolute accuracy - all of my units will be fictional, and it might be a long time before anyone who knows any better sees these chaps... but I'd still like to be in the ball park, you know?  lol

Don't you mean you want to be on the right cricket pitch?!  lol

Obliquely helpful - get a copy of Wargames Illustrated issue 48, there is a nice (all text) article about uniforms for the Mutiny.

Funnily enough, the one pro cricketer I've met - he played for the Sri Lankan team ages ago - was also an enthusiastic baseball fan. Charming fellow.

A sketch from the time has a KRRC rifleman of the Delhi Field Force in a short shell jacket (presumably Rifle Green), pale trousers (they look like they are white) and a forage cap covered with a havelock.

The Rifle Brigade however apparently marched to Cawnpore in their full "European cloth dress" with covered shakos, and their wearing of Rifle Green in battle was commented upon (presumably because seeing a unit not dressed like scarecrows during the Mutiny was an uncommon and noteworthy occurrence). After the fall of Lucknow they adopted a slate-grey uniform with airpipe helmets.
