VOTOMS infantry figures in 28mm?
« on: 12 November 2014, 10:42:15 AM »
Hi,

For various reasons I seem to be doing a 28mm VOTOMS project. I just seem to have a wee bit of a problem finding models.

For once, the problem is not with the AT models, I've got that pretty well covered. But if you're doing it in 28mm, part of point is being able to mix in infantry models. Even though they usually don't usually play a big part, they help convey a sense of scale and differentiate this form every other robot thing.

So if you've got any pointers to figure ranges in appropriate garb, links would be appreciated.

Pilots in their jumpsuits would be nice, here's Chirico in the standard issue red and Fyana's white-and-pink variant (actually pretty close to the Balarant uniform I think):

The officer uniforms are pretty simple, though I would be more confident doing the duo-tone accents if they were at least a little bit sculpted on:

The rank and file are pretty similar, mostly they just wear helmets instead of peaked caps and more kit.

Here's a teaser of my stuff:

The infantry in the picture is 15mm WWII Americans and not related to this project in any way...

And yes, the scale is a little bit ish... finding this stuff in a consistent scale is a nightmare.

Hmmm... not quite what I was looking for. The colored thing is part of the uniform cut, not a separate vest worn on top. Yes, you could do it with just paint if you are a lot better painter than I am...

But the crossover goon suit is actually pretty close to the pilot suit. If they only had the helmets with breather tubes and googly goggles.

You won't get a perfect match so you will have to either compromise or hire someone to make them for you.

The Crossover goons come with separate heads and there are a selection... if you aren't happy with those, then you could try Pig Iron, Ironwind Metals, and a host of others who make separate heads (Puppetswar, Microart studios...).

Ofcourse, it's not popular enough to have generated a line of "totally not IP-infringing" models. At least I'm not aware of one.

But it's the level of compromise... it's also not really that unique. The uniform designs are pretty standard for early 80's animation. You could drop these guys into Macross or early Gundam and no one would bat an eyelid.

The Crossover goons are a good match as I said. They're fine bareheaded, but ofcourse helmeted heads would be nice too. The googly goggles are the defining feature of the helmet (I'll check Pig Iron).

For the military uniforms, I'm specifically looking for something relatively close-fitting (closer to parade uniform than fatigues), with a sculpted front piece that comes down from shoulders and tapers to the waist. I think that's the definining feature of the uniforms. With peaked caps and helmets, though some bare heads are okay too. It could be historical too -- I'll swap the weapons if need be. I'm thinking something from 19th Century might very well fit the bill.

How about a gander at some pulp sci-fi lines? Those are always big on chest pieces with peaked shoulders etc...

I have some 1/100 Gundam minis that came with the huge Robotech factory, and those do have the uniform types you're after. But as far as I know, they're the only ones available, and not even in the scale you're after...
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

I ended up ordering some sprues from the Perrys. Personally, I'm not too fond of Perrys but they sell single sprues. I think the dismounted French Dragoons might be a good base for conversions.

Nothing is created in a vacuum. I mean, look at Full Frontal here (whoever came up with such a dorky name?):

That's flat out a Napoleonic uniform:

Just drop the silly hat.

Have you seen the Votoms stuff over at Necromundicon? I think he uses the slightly smaller Gashapon and cheats the scale a bit, but his campaign logs are mind-blowing.

Good luck.  I was going to say the soldiers/figures look nearly identical to the some of the Southern Cross Robotech stuff, but I've never seen figures.  It really isn't that unique, so I hope you find something.  Do any of your scaled mecha come with "pilot" figures that you could seek out on ebay or something?

Looking forwards to seeing this grow.
Are you planning on playing this, and if so what rule system?

Those look good! Thanks for the pointer. I found a good one in the Pig Iron range too, but I feel a bit silly buying a batch of 20 heads that when I only want 2 of them...

Mad Robot actually also had some torsos that looked good. Too bad they they didn't have any dress trousers to go with them. I ordered a few anyway, gotta see what they fit with (I don't have leftover Cadian bits lying around).
