Which Fantasy Boardgames have nice figures?
« on: 21 November 2014, 10:13:22 PM »
Hi all

I haven't really kept up with some of the boardgame releases over the last 10 years and I was looking for info on which games have nice 28mm compatible figures and how well they go with other figures eg GW and the Heroquest series. I see Descent and D&D mentioned a bit here, but the releases are a bit confusing.

Also which games come with nice terrain and dungeon pieces?

Thanks
Kieran

I'd wait until the new Hero Quest shows up, or Dungeon Saga from Mantic (or the Conan game if that happens).  Descent has a lot of figures but they're pretty mediocre (and I don't like the 2nd generation stuff much).  D&D isn't really a proper board game, but has several types of offerings for pre-paints.

Dungeon Saga and Hero Quest both bring a lot of miniatures and terrain to the mix.  There was recently a big Kickstarter for Zealot Miniatures who is producing a huge range of dungeon furniture in resin over the next year and a half.  As far as board games go, I can't think of many off the top of my head.
2025 Painted Miniatures: 341
('24: 502, '23: 159, '22: 214, '21: 148, '20: 207, '19: 123, '18: 98, '17: 226, '16: 233, '15: 32, '14: 116)

Descent and descent 2nd ed are ok - non heroic 28mm, d&d adventure system (legend of Drizzt, Castle ravenloft and wrath of asharsldon) are softer on detail and are massive, I.e. Heroic 32mm but not prepainted.
My main painting output of late has been a combo of descent, adventure system and reaper bones, they're all nice but not brilliant, much better than the D&D prepaints though but need their bases hacking off and replacing wilt slottas if you don't want them to warp
