Playmat for wargames and boardgames
« on: 27 August 2023, 12:13:47 PM »
Hello

I am looking to double up on a mat, I wanted to get a mat for the wargames I play that could also be used for boardgames like Imperial Assault and Journeys in Middle Earth, and cards games, like Arkham Horror and Marvel Vhampions.

I wondered if anyone had tried Deepcut Studios and/or Playmats.eu for wargames and/or boardgames.

I had a look on their sites and migh triple up, a double sided neophrene mat...

Any ides or suggestions?

Cheers

I can just say that I've never regretted getting a neoprene rubber double-sider from Tiny Wargames, semi-desert on the obverse, meadow grassland on the reverse. Few things upgrade the look of a game as much.

Take a moment to check whether there's a logo printed on the gaming surface. Some companies do commit that sin.

The laws of probability do not apply to my dice in wargames or to my finesses in bridge.

I've had both good an abysmal experience with Tiny.

Deepcut and Geek Villain, on the other hand,  were both a delight to deal with.

Depending on the size of play area you want, Loke Battlemats give a lot of variation in one package, if that matters to you. They are large size book format.

There are 100 types of people in the world. Those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data.

I have only bought playmats from Deep-cut. They were very nice to deal with.
I have bought from Dunhelm's (UK home furnishings store). They do several
'leatherette' materials (available off a roll, & sold by the metre).
Not as nice as the Deep-cut ones, but a LOT cheaper.
The Green is good for general battlefields.
The Brown for heavily wooded, marshes or WW1 Western Front.
The Grey is good for built up areas, D&D etc.
The Blue for any sea, and
The Dark Red... well it is so nice I bought that as a general table cover. :D

Hi, I have several Deepcut mats bought from BigRedBat for "To the Strongest". They are very good.  Unfortunately my experience with Tiny has been "difficult".  I ordered 9 mats back in April, about 5 arrived quite quickly but several were incorrect, and the others took a long time. In fairness Tiny didn't dispute that they were liable to replace them and apologised for the prolonged delays, but it was a very frustrating. My mates have had similar experiences. That said the quality when they get it right is pretty good.

Now that you mention it, they may no longer be making them as a general line. Write and ask 'em. I found them very accommodating whenever I wanted something a bit irregular.

You may already be well underway by now, but I'm going to throw another one in for Deepcut Studios. In fact they're the only ones I've ever bought mats from (5 so far). Every transaction has been excellent and the quality of their products is amazing (I'm a mousemat-material only kind of guy btw) :)
Miniatures you say? Well I too, like to live dangerously...

Cheers, have you got any double siders? Or with stitched corners?

Regretfully no on both accounts; single-sided and no stitching on all of mine...  :?

I had Deepcut make a custom size double sided mouse mat , grassland , and then sea - it’s really good quality and neat edge stitched - I found an early single side mousemat one that had a lot of use did fray at the edges . The only issue I get is that it can move around on the table as it’s slippy when used on the dining room table .  Always excellent service . Only thing now is extra cost as get hit with import taxes to UK

Tiny have been either very good or very bad , they did do some very good bespoke large cloth mats and did a good job . They then didn’t do very well in timescales after and offer I bought , but sorted it in the end . I’m am happy with the quality though

Pics of my Deepcut double sided and edged mat - that the grandson uses on the dining table for his play mobile and pirate ships etc

I know this is a zombie post, but I had questions about the different types of material for game mats. Has anyone had any experience with the polyester fabric or plush cloth mats?

I know that there are the traditional neoprene mats, and vinyl mats (my preference), but recently I've seen a lot of sites offering "plush cloth" mats (I'm guessing like a thin baby blanket material?), and blackout polyester fabric (I'm guessing more like a thick sports shirt?).

I can see how these would be useful for contouring to objects placed underneath, for hills and valleys and such. But how are they as just a flat surface for sci-fi or cyberpunk settings? Does the polyester shift much, or is it thick enough to avoid this.

I haven't seen anything in person other than neoprene and vinyl, so it's difficult for me to have a solid opinion on this.
