Too many rpg lite fantasy boardgames......
« on: October 27, 2015, 06:33:37 PM »
So there are 3 self contained big box fantasy boardgames on (or soon starting) on Kickstarter. Like buses, you wait for ages for one to come along then 3 arrive at once!

Folklore: (ends tonight) 28mm figures, Gothic Horror and Fantasy hybrid with both map and skirmish sub games. d100 system

Swords and Sorcery: 32mm figures, High fantasy, 2D tiles based. Multiple custom d10 system

Perditions Mouth:  Launching KS on 11/11. 28mm figures. Strong horror theme with Insectoid race as key protagonist, 2D boards based, diceless system using card decks.

They all look to be excellent examples of the type, with great miniatures and quality artwork. Anyone been following these or backing them? Any thoughts on relative merits?

Yes, the dragon is the stand out model amongst them so far, great looking sculpt.

There's a lot of it about, and seemingly endless sums of money being splurged on some of these launches. Achieving half a million dollars of investment seems par for the course. I think there are a lot of middle aged wargamers put there, brought up on D&D/RPG 25-30 years ago, who now have a lot of disposable income.

I believe the main attraction is rarely the game itself, but the opportunity to acquire a huge batch of original, usually beautifully done miniatures and creatures, at what works out as a knock down price per item. Either to add to the collection, or for individual resale on eBay.
So I guess as long as people think they're getting some kind of bargain this way, these things will keep getting churned out.

I haven't bought into one yet, but if the right twist on the genre came along, I'd certainly hop on the band wagon.

It looks almost exactly like most dragons released these days. All the same old beats. :( The most novel thing about it is that  it's got four extra heads, but then that means it's a not-Tiamat.

gosh,  I do like the look of Folklore particularly ... terrific figures.

... mind you, I've just watched, and more to the point, listened to the video at the top of the page for that game and ... hmmm, there's a well-deserved 'razzle' for best 'comedy-Transylvanian' accent awaiting that voice-over effort ...
