MTG Board game for parts :-)
« on: 08 December 2015, 10:52:43 PM »
So I've been eyeing the "MTG" board game. It has 5 decent "wizard" figures plus 30 monster figures along with damage counters and some terrain. The 30ish$ Canadian seems like an ok price but I'm waiting to see them on clearance. Has anyone else looked at these?

As a long-time fan of Heroscape (which this is a re-skin / update of) I've been very tempted to pick the game up to actually play. The price point seems pretty reasonable for what you get in the box.

I picked it up. Right now they are on Amazon, Walmart, and Miniatures Market for under $20 a box. It's worth it for the miniatures alone at that price.

There is a Wizard and 6 soldiers for each of the 5 factions.

The Red faction is fire themed. Caster with fire emanating from hands, fire elementals shaped like great cats and phoenix models. The Caster is an obvious Elementalist, the Cats for Animal Companions or Demons, and the Phoenix for imps or Crows.

The Blue Faction has an nicely sculpted cloaked caster, 3 energy duplicates of him, in various poses, and 3 multi-armed other worldy beings. So 4 casters there  and 3 demons.

The Black Faction is undead themed. A necromancer, 3 zombie warriors, and 3 bigger beefier undead. So, a Necromancer, 3 Zombies, and 3 wraiths or death knights.

Green Faction is Nature themed. Caster, 3 wood/tree golems, and 3 elven archers. They don't even need an explanation .

Tan Faction. I don't get the theme but it's a caster, 3 lightly armed and armored humans, and 3 Rhino men. I'm thinking they would make good thieves/treasure hunters and thugs/melee soldiers

They replaced the Heroscape tiles with large sheets of cardstock tiles. If you play Heroscape of Battletech, these interlocking hex mats are worth the price of the box to expand those games.

The Dice are Heroscape (Swords, shields, and blanks) dice with new art.

There is also a D20 countdown die, like they've started including in some MTG box sets.

This sounds interesting as a source of cheap/good figures, but i can't find any mention of it on Amazon UK.  Searching MTG just throws up the Magic teh Gathering card game.

Yeah, was curious about the scale...I'm always up for some cheap miniatures if I can salvage them.

If they're similar to old Heroscape (which I have heard they are), they'll fit nicely in the 28 to 32mm range. The monsters tend towards the larger end of that spectrum...but they're monsters so who cares!?

They are sized along the lines of the current D&D/Pathfinder figures.

They don't look bad alongside Frostgrave figures.

The heads are a bit smaller and more true scale than Frostgraves heroic proportions.

That's the first time I'vw heard the Frostgrave minis described as herioc proportions. I get what you're saying but my problem has been matching Reaper and GW minis to Frostgrave. Love that they are a bit smaller and match my historicals better but it's trickier to get matching fantasy minis.

I still have 30+ year old Ral Partha and Grenadier Fantasy miniatures in my collection to compare them to. The Frostgrave models are a bit beefier. Reaper Miniatures used to describe that style as heroic proportioned, before everyone knew what Warhammer Fantasy models were.

True scaled 28mm miniatures have really small heads, hands, and gear.

Frostgrave models are aesthetically pleasing and easier to paint.

Are these figures cast in that flexible, bendy plastic? As in, could they be re-primed and painted again reliably?

Some at least of the old Heroscape minis were the same sculpts as the old WotC D&D prepaints.  i have Fire giants form both ranges, and apart from the base, they are identical.
