Samurai Naval Warfare - Matsuura Clan Buntai for Ronin *updated*
« on: 16 September 2015, 01:50:29 PM »
Hallo,

I have a Problem. Recently I bought a copy of Ronin. I liked the rules and in the last weeks I bought some Perry Samurai and I'm working on Terrain and stuff. Now I have to choose which clan I want to play. Because I like ships, pirates and naval actions I want to play a Clan with a strong Navy. I have three Clans in mind.

1. Matsuura clan: As Wako they attacked China and Korea. They defeated the So Clan. And they fought in both Invasions of Korea. They also survived through the Sengoku jidai to the Shogunate.

2. So clan: The So pillaged the Korean and Chinese Coasts as Wako till the Koreans invaded Tsushima. After that they became the link between Japan and Korea. They also participated in the Invasion of Korea and survived in to the Shogunate.

3. Murakami clan: The Murakami clan was very activ in the inland sea and was allied to the Mori clan.

At the moment i tend to the Matsuura clan, but I don't know how to paint them.
I'm open to any suggestions ;).

In the meantime here are some pictures of my sekibune. I were inspired by the Sekibune of jimbibbly. It is my second attempt to built a ship myself.

I hope you like it.

Good to see more Japanese naval stuff going on  :)

I have Murakami and a quick google search shows that Matsuura samurai had white sashimono and the ashigaru had red.

Not much to go on but a start.

cheers

Yes I've found the templates with the banners too. I ment the color of the armour and the uniform Kimono.
But I'am not sure if they had an own colour scheme beside the sashimono and the nobori.

I would imagine that they have a similar 'uniform' to the vast majority of the small and mid sized clans i.e. none  :)

Just a usual mishmash of armour and clothes but if you use a similar colour scheme to tie them in it'll be fine whatever colour you choose.

cheers

Thank you for the tip!

Then I'll experiment a little bit.

Kuki Moritaka was another naval power - for the Oda. They fought against the also powerful Mori clan during Oda's war against the Ikko-ikki and others (many others). Steel Fist Miniatures has the Mori 3-d Sashimonos and boy are they nice!

Hi,

thank you guys for all the imput! After a littlebit of further research I found a picture of an Matsuura Ashigaru in the book "Ashigaru - 1467-1649" from Osprey. In the discription it says: "This Member ... is dressed in the characteristic red and gold armour of the Matsuura family, as would have been in action when they fought under Matsuura Shigenobu in Korea in 1592. His armour, ... is copied from an actual specimen in the Matsuura Historical Museum on Hirado Island... ." I liked the colour and the backround of the Matsuura Clan so i made my decision to paint my figures as Matsuura.

Well, my first historical miniatures. All in all i'm satisfied with the result. I didn't paint the golden stripes on the breast plate, as i wasn't confident enough to get a proper result. Maybe I do it at the next ones. Also with the next figures, I should try to paint better faces and bring more variety in the colours of the kimono and trousers.

hope you like it.

Martin

Thank you very much!

The sekibune still isn't finished, but I'm working on it and it shouldn't take too long.
