Ronin Buntai how do they play.
« on: December 26, 2013, 09:47:48 PM »
Got the ronin book for Christmas and I will be looking to make a Buntai pretty soon. I was wondering if you guys had any experience in how they play in game. Doesn't matter if it's the north star packs or a Buntai using your own models. Just trying to decide what kind to make first.

Thanks.

I certainly don't have a lot of experience with the game yet, as I've only played one game with Koryu versus Sohei, but I would definitely recommend a buntai with some armor.

In our game the Sohei trampled the Koryu, eliminating every man without losing even one monk.  Luck and dice seemed to even out fairly well and the skill level of the players was about equal, so, even with the Koryu's bujutsu they had a heck of a time getting through the Sohei's medium armor.  The best that they achieved were stacking stun tokens on their opponents.

I would have hated to see the Koryu up against the Bushi!

Thanks mate.

I have models I can use to make Bushi or Sohei buntai.

Out of the models that north star have come out with I like the Koryu buntai the best. Sounds like they are not that great though? In terms of gameplay I mean.

I would definitely pick up the Koryu and give them a try.  They're great models and fun to paint.  If you haven't looked at them closely you may not have noticed, but seven of them are based on the Seven Samurai by Kurosawa.

You may also have much better luck with them than I did.  If you do, let me know, because I really love the models and definitely want to use them again.

I will get them at some point as I love the models. Might get the Sohei too but I do already have a decent amount of monks, none with ranged weapons though. Money is an obstacle at the moment though and I have plenty to be painting plus some stuff I a waiting for on trade.

I haven't played a lot, but we've had similar experiences with the Koryu - the lack of armour and missile weapons is a serious problem for that buntai. Armour works!

You can see some of the games I've played here:

Most of the models I have are armoured. So I will be going for a Bushi buntai most likley.

Or a Sohei Buntai if I buy a few ranged monks to add to what I have.

Thanks for the links. Will check them out.
