Anyone done the Forever War in miniature?
« on: 02 January 2016, 06:23:30 PM »
I would like to know if anyone has ever created the armies based on the Forever War novel by Joe Haldeman?

I know that Starship Troopers well represented, but what about the Forever War? What scale, manufacturers, and rulesets have been used?

Mayfair Games produced a boardgame on The Forever War in 1983.

There's a 3 part comic of that novel by Marvano if you're after images.

I've got the Hardback version. (bought in times when you didn't have to sell an arm and a leg for such items)
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons,
for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

Been a long time since I read the book; I have this image of the 'enemy' as being non-humanoid, almost slug-like with a proboscis, but may be confusing with the Footfall invaders, which were sort of elephantine.

Are they humanoid in the Marvano's? Google image search isn't giving me a 'clear picture.'

Doug

Edit: Of course, the whole point of the original novel was it was hopeless for humans as the aliens reproduced so fast as to make it impossible to keep up. Hard sell in a game, usually. Never saw the sequel, though.

In Marvano's version, they are Humanoid (the guy with black helmets):

And hey, I love Footfall! The Portuguese cover of the novel makes them look like elephants ;)

Gotcha. My French is non-existant, and, seeing that panel in my search, I thought they were robots, and that was part of training.  ::)

So did at least some of the American covers; I have the book, but never read. Felt more than a bit disappointed in the Mote series, and the characters seeming to have as much depth as Doc Smith's, and never got the courage to try.

Now there IS a creature somewhere in sci-fi art with a similar head, but slug-like body. Probably will NEVER find.

Doug

Edit: Then I remembered these, close, if not the source of my foggy memory.

The Fith'p* from Footfall were described as looking almost exactly like baby elephants, with some differences:

Broad clawed feet
short paddle-like tail (that they used in their ground cars to control the accelerator-pedal)
the trunk that split into eight 'digits' that were about the thickness of a human thumb at the tips

I'd love to find/make some Fith'p figures for a Tomorrow's War scenario, though early in the book the invaders really have the upper hand in terms of orbital artillery & laser support. In the chapter "The Jayhawk War", an armored cav column of the Kansas National Guard is almost entirely wiped out about thirty seconds after they make contact...
from Mr.Vampire: "It's the paintjob that makes the miniature fight harder not the size."
