I haven't gave up just yet.

I think these guys have the right vibe, save for the oversized blades (and the would need braids):

Other option I'm pondering is Otherworld Gnolls (trimming nails, head swap and some weapon swap):

I like Otherworld's proportions better, but all of them com with fur cloaks and that doesn't scream "desert" to me. maybe if painted as lion fur or something...

Wargames Factory did produce an Orc Warband that had a torso with that kind of armor. Fireforge also has bodies with that kind of armor in their Foot Sergeants box set.
