Ciao,
I did mine for Lion Rampant using Bartolomeo Colleoni as Condottiere. I always liked the Condottieri era, and he was one of my favourite mostly for his boldness and his distictive coat-of-arms.
For this project I used this book: http://www.amazon.it/Bartolomeo-Colleoni-compagnie-ventura-Secolo/dp/8896519705, full biography and several nice pictures.

Lion Rampat roster:
2 units of Mounted Men at Arms (knights)
1 unit of Men at Arms (Knights, but Rotellieri sword-and-buckler men are nice too)
1 unit of Mounted Yeomen (Galuppi, is a type of medium/light cavalry used by Milan and Venice forces)
2 units of Foot Yeomen (pikmen)
1 unit of Foot Serjeants (halberdiers)
1 unit of Crossbowmen
1 unit of Crossbowmen (schioppettieri - hangunners: splittable in 2 units of Bidowers)
1 unit of Bidowers (archers/skirmishers/rabble)

Infantrymen wear the white/red "divisa" pants, so called because they are splitted (divisi) with the Condottiere colors and/or signs, here Red/White.
I.e. Niccolò Piccinino were green/white/red; The Attendolo-Sofrza were blue/white/red, etc...

Pictures here: http://pippoweb.blogspot.it/p/colleoni-condotta.html

Next addition will surely be the eastern light cavalry: Stradioti
Ciao

PS: Yes, "Condottieri" is plural form, singular is "Condottiere" or even "Condottiero" (non so common, but used).

Thanks for the comments, i have edited the thread title now.

The shields on the swordsmen will be a challange as i am not very good at freehand. I am aiming at a rather generic mix of colours so i can use them in different settings.

Some stradiots will be bought when i next order from perry miniatures (along with more light cavalry).

Not sure if you've seen these, but I did some relatively easy shield designs on those Perry figures as Milanese - maybe of use?

Cheers, Simon

If you want extra versatility from your figures, leave the pavises separate to the crossbowmen, and get twice as many pavises as figures. Then paint the pavises in two opposing liveries. Simply choose who you want the crossbowmen to fight for at the next game and leave the spare pavises in the box. You will also need a few extra standard bearers.

We used to game 30 years war with a similar policy - everyone painted generic looking units but did 2 or 3 standard bearers for each unit. 1 Imperialist, 1 Swedish or French, (and if you wanted more choices 1 Bavarian and 1 ECW).
Meant you could turn out 2 or 3 different armies with 90% common figures.
