Congo...first thoughts...
« on: 16 August 2016, 11:44:15 PM »
My copy of Congo arrived from Northstar Miniatures the other day (very promptly too!) and although I haven't had a chance to play a game yet I've posted some thoughts on my blog...

http://wargaminggallimaufry.blogspot.co.uk/2016/08/congo.html

The short version is that they look really good and look as though they'll be great fun to play!

Now, off to the loft to try and find my Darkest Africa figures....

Are there any factors that would denigrate using 15/18mm figures or smaller in the game?

Unfortunately yes, there are not the correct minis for the native forces.
I had the book and wanted to play it with Blue Moon minis, but there are no minis for the native forces with muskets or bows  :'( and only to play with a white man or arab list was no option.
Otherwise the rules are great, what a pity  :(

You do know Irregular make an extensive range of colonial native figures and they can match with Blue Moon, right?  And there must be others.  I'm sure you could make it work if you wanted to.  But I would say that, wouldn't I?  Of course, I am making it work, too, so I say again you can do it.  I'm just not targeting that set of rules.

So, go for it in 15/18 mm if you want to.

Apart from any issues about sourcing figures, the rules are very clear that although their preference is 28mm, you could easily use another scale such as 15mm.  That's what I did with their Muskets & Tomahawks rules.

Excellent review of the rules.
I must say that the rule book has a nice look about it.
Look forward to some battle reports.

Do scenarios are presented in the book or only on those loose Gazette format?

There are 8 scenarios.  All are in the Bulletins, which are tucked inside the cover of the book when you buy it.

That said, I think it would be pretty easy to adapt the existing adventures or even make up your own.

Thanks for the review, alastair.  I have picked up a copy and I agree it is very pretty.  I admit I am a sucker for pretty wargames rulebooks.

As several people have pointed out, there are actually 8 scenarios in the book, not 4.  They were cunningly hidden on the other side of the Scenario sheets and I failed to spot this!!   :)
