My family is having a quatercentenary celebration next year and as one even in that hoopla I am thinking about running a what we here would call a Swashbuckling scenario. There are several small and large battles to choose between since Sweden and my ancestor, Peder Michaelsson Hammarkjöld, were involved in several areas: Poland, Russia, Denmark etc.

My question is to you knoledgeble Swashbucklers out there is what kind of miniatures an literature there is pertaining to NW and central Europe for this period.

TAG have some figures in their Polish Range - Krakow Militia - which are perfect for the period and location you have in mind (being "german" ie non-poles, usually germans, danes, swedes or scots and so western in costume rather than kaftan wearing polish haiduks). There are colour plates in the excellent Osprey books on the Poles which show the costume (used as the basis for the painted examples on the TAG site) which is more "flamboyant" with bigger hats and more lace etc, than the later mid century TYW/ECW figs out there. I'd go with these fellows!

Foundry have an Elizabethan range as do Vendel.  In 15mm Essex used to have an Spanish range which was quite nice, but these seem to be mid 16thC.

Hi Peder,

I was thinking along the lines of James Clavell's "The Lat Valley."

TYW where the Swedes an all sorts fought . This book/movie has some good characters and with TAG producing some worthy figures you could make a small band of Swedes defending some villages against a band of cut throat mercs fighting for food, women, whatever!
