Latest Project: Ganesha Games' Fungus King painted up
« on: 12 March 2017, 06:40:55 PM »
Latest side project, a painted Fungus King from Ganesha Games' range, sold by Alternative Armies/Alector/15mmcouk/whatever you want to call them.

Nice chunky one-piece casting, very sturdy.

Comes without a base, but I've mounted it on 45mm Reaper plastic base.

Pretty big, as the scale shot with an old Vor rad-trooper shows.

Overall, a very nice model, useful for a variety of fantasy, scifi, and superhero settings.

Looks good - I like the muted colour scheme, most of the fungus people you see painted are very lurid.

It is an imaginative piece; AND you've done a SPLENDID job bringing it to it fungus life. As one of the lurid Mushroom painters, I must say your choice of colors is as WONDERFUL as your brushwork. VERY WELL DONE!

Thanks.  Pretty happy with the way it came out, and I'm glad I resisted the temptation to go with lots of bright contrasting colors on the mushroom caps.  While there are many strikingly colored fungi out there, many others are nearly colorless with that dead white tone and they do tend to be under-represented.

Occurs to me the model is fairly scale-free, and could be a giant-sized 15mm or even 6mm figure as easily as a 28mm ogre-sized critter.  Makes a nice Greater Warbeast Single Figure Unit (perhaps with a spore-based shooting attack?) for Dragon Rampant.  Very apropos for an Underdark-themed warband, or (with Burrowing) as a summoned unit that comes bursting out of the deeps when called upon.

I had never considered the potential of funghi but can certainly see the advantages in this one.

That could be a new fantasy battle theme: the lurid vs the muted fungi.
"To the victor, go the spores!"
"This I have known ever since I stretched out my fingers to the abomination within that great gilded frame; stretched out my fingers and touched a cold and unyielding surface of polished glass."

I like that concept.  Maybe have both sides with suitable allies?  The Lurids could be pals with woodland types - ents, sylvan elves, forest fey - while the Muteds get Underdark support - dark elves, trollkin, worms, slimes, jellies - on their side?

There certainly are a ton of fungi minis on the market right now, and the wide variety of sizes (and even scales) for them opens up a lot of potential for unique armies.
